    Physical Features ofTexas

    Texas has many different landforms.

    In West Texas, there are highplains, deserts, and mountains.

    The Guadalupe Mountains are alsolocated in West Texas.

    In Central Texas, it has the rockyHill Country and there is a lot ofland good for ranching.

    Texas Panhandle, located in

    Northwest Texas, is flat and hasfew trees. Palo Duro Canyon StatePark has steep cliffs of layeredrock.

    Pine trees cover East Texas andthe land there is hilly.

    The Gulf Coast, which is along theGulf of Mexico, has land that is flat

    and sandy. It also has somewetlands.

    Texas History

    The Apache, Kiowa, and Caddo Indianswere some of the first people to live inTexas.

    Spanish Missions: Spanish explorersclaimed the land of Texas for Spain in the1500s but they didnt live there. Therewere many Spanish priests who buildmissions in Texas. In 1821, settlers fromthe U.S. started moving into Texas. At thattime, Mexico became independent fromSpain.

    Revolt Against Mexico: War broke out

    between the people living in Texas andMexico. This war included the Battle of theAlamo in 1836.

    Statehood: Texas became apart of theUnited States at the end of 1845. Duringthe U.S. Civil War, Texas was a slave stateand later on formed the Confederacy.

    Cattle Drives and Oil Drilling: Many Texancowboys had large cattle ranches after theU.S. Civil War. In the 1890s, the oil industry

    started changing Texas economy.

    From Texas to the Moon: Houston wasdesignated to be the headquarters of theManned Spacecraft Center where theyexplored, now known as the Johnson SpaceCenter.

    Famous TexansDwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

    was the 34th President of the United

    States.

    Henry Cisneros (1947- ) was the first

    Hispanic-American mayor of a major

    U.S. City.

    Barbara Jordan (1936-1996)was thefirst southern African-American woman

    to be elected to the U.S. House of

    Representatives.

    Texas Economy

    Texas currently has many

    industries, such as

    manufacturing, oil drilling,

    agriculture, and mining.

    There are many high-tech

    companies located in Texas.

    Also, Texas raises more cattle

    than any other state. Farmers in

    the state also raise sheep, goats,

    and horses.

    Some plants that grow in Texas

    are wheat, sorghum, corn,

    cotton, grapefruit, orange andnut trees.

    Sulfur, coal, salt, and gypsum are

    produced in the mines of Texas.

    In addition, Oil and natural gas

    drilling is another important

    industry in the state.
