From the Conference Chair/President-Elect Welcome to the 2007 TexTESOL V Fall Conference! The Board has assembled an extraordinary event including an exceptional choice of presentations that represent a wide variety of interests and educational levels, catering which I am sure will delight you, and all in an urban wildlife sanc-tuary. TexTESOL V is committed to supporting the professional development of TESOL instruc-tors and administrators in North Texas, and today’s conference should clearly reflect that commitment. The conference theme, “Language Links our Lives,” reflects what we do every day. We link with others as language instructors, and they link to us. We are connected to others’ lives in profound ways, since we are their link to a new “world” that is not bound by their native language. Some-times we feel “chained,” not linked. Through events like today’s we are reminded that it was our desire to produce capable and productive individuals that drew us into the profession originally. So we are here today to strengthen links to others in our professional community and become better TESOL professionals. To that end, we hope that this conference will inspire you and provide you with ideas and materi-als that will make you an even better instructor starting this Monday morning. Cordially, Caroline DeCoux, President-Elect, TexTESOL V Conference Chair, 2007 TexTESOL V Fall Conference

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

11:00-12:00 (Auditorium)

Case Histories as Scientific Research

Thanks to the US government and its current insistence that educational practice be based on “scientific” research, there has been an emphasis on controlled experimental studies, and a de-emphasis of other forms of inquiry. What about case histories? My view is that case histories can be valid forms of scientific research. We will discuss some famous polyglots, such as Lomb Kato, who mastered 17 languages, the archeologist Heinrich Schliemann, Daniel Tammet, who gained notoriety by mastering Icelandic in ten days, “Armando,” a young man I interviewed who came to the US from Mexico expecting to learn English but who wound up learning He-brew as well, and other cases.

AFTERNOON PRESENTATION 2:00-2:45 (W168)

Current Controversies

No Child Left Behind: Past, Present and Future The past: What is the research basis for the reading part of NCLB? The present: Has it worked? The future: Should it be kept, changed or dumped?
