Giant comet marks up to 135-m long and 30-m wide were detected 130 km northeast of Durban (South Africa) during a side-scan sonar survey. The high width-length ratio of 1:4.5, in contrast to ratios of 1:33 observed elsewhere, is attributed to lateral coalescence of adjacent tails. The marks are inter- preted as erosional features formed in the wake of large obstacles in an area continuously exposed to the strong geostrophic flow of the Agulhas Current.
