Outline

• Schedule

• Installation of gas pipes

• Gas system

• Global setup & mechanics

• Magnet issues

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 3

Schedule updated to v2.0

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 4

Goliathmagnet

Gas pipes installed!

To be done:- gas panel in the experimental area- leak test with He

Gas panel must include also retention buckets for flammable gas sensors.

Is ok to use quick connectors? sensor

Cost of the five gas lines

• 6mm diam. pipes x 240m• 10mm diam. pipes x 240m• Mechanical supports• Estimated cleaning cost• Estimated manpower cost

• TOTAL

1584.00 CHF

2715.00 CHF

505.38 CHF

2380.00 CHF

3442.54 CHF

10626.92 CHF

Paid by: Saclay (345 CHF) + CERN

Left-over material: 30m pipes per type, some support

Gas mixing racks• We can connect to the main distribution:

– Ar, CO2, N2, He, ethane, isobutan

– CH4 temporary on “melange” line

– We pay the bill at the end!!!

• Gas mixing racks:– 5 gas system at least 2 gas

mixing rack, maybe 3 (the lastonly for not-flammable mixes)

– To put 2 mixing rack in theretention bucket, we are askingfor a reorganization of the gaszone, i.e. to move out the not-flammable main distributionrack

Main distribution:flammable not-flammable

Retention bucket for heavy flammable gases

Gas mixing systems• Goal: flexible, upgradable during the several

runs, possibility to mix main distribution as well as premixed bottles

• At the moment, not enough flowmeters and controllers for all the lines .. We start building setups for June

from maindistribution (use left-over 10mm pipes)

Only required gases or premixed bottles(use left-over 6mm-OR- flexible ss pipes)

Mixing cylinder.. Who can provide some of them?

flowmeterConnection to the pipes going towards the experimetal area

Gas system per line

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 8

Lack of flammable gas sensors!!!

In the gas zone, they are provided by the SPS people: put all the gas racks closer in the same bucket

In the experimetal area, only 2 avalaible.. and 1 is for the gas panel: Additional sensors could be charged on us For June seems ok: no flammable gas in MM

tracker, isobutan for Frascati setup For October we want isobutan and methane !!! Sensors could not work in magnetic field!!! In this

case problems also for June!!!

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 9

Cables list (barrack area)

1) Fiber lines x10 (from Saclay?)

2) Ethernet lines x5 (from Frascati?)

Anyway better to have also:

1) Set of BNC lines (24 from GDD)

2) SHV lines (4 from GDD)

HV PS and DAQ is inside the experimental area, so are required:

Setup “A” outside the magnet

• Placed upstream Goliath

Beam line

Beam height~ 128 cm

Useful space 3.3 m

Table withmicromegastracker

If Detector Under Test is large, as in June, place it just after the table (together with your support mechanics!!!)

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 12

Table with micromegas tracker

• A grid of holes for fixation• For flammable gas:

– Retention buckets must be added on table and, in case, as a roof

– Holes must be blind Lenght 120cm

Height 70cm from the floor

Can part of the legs be substituted by a concrete block? If yes, how can we fix on it?

Width 80cm

Setup “B” inside the magnet

railwheel

Beam

Beam height~ 128 cm

~ 8

5 cm

Table with grid of holes, same issues (blind holes, retention buckets..) for flammable gases, see previous slide.

Dimension to be defined

Only 43 cm between beam level and the level of the Goliath coil surface!!!

A specific rail system will be designed to recover some space:

Additional issues with Setup “B”

• Rails should extend outside Goliath:– Additional dismontable rails with some

mechanical support? Should we dismount also rails every time?

• Gas alarm sensors in magnetic field• How much close to Goliath can the

electronics rack “B” be place?– Usually LVDS should be not longer than 5m– The electronics can be sensitive to magnetic

field

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 15

Additional common issues

• Cables and gas pipes from panels to setups:– additional removable cable trays?– plastic gas pipes for this year, to be upgraded

to flexible stainless steel (setup B requires flexible ones)

• DAQ PC inside the area:– Radiation issue to be checked (especially for

pc removed after the use)

31/03/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN 16

Magnet

• Goliath under test today

• Frascati is working on the field map file

• Proposed a week, from 4th to 8th of May, for all our tests:– delimitation of the range of the fringe field– PMTs test– AoB

Conclusions

• Gas pipes installed. Gas panel and leak test with He still to be done.

• Gas mixing racks designed

• Problem for lack of flammable gas sensor

• Sketch of the global setup under completion

• Magnet test week proposed
