Test (1) The Odyssey: The Sirens

After we had got out into the open sea, wewent on until we reached the island of the goddessCirce. We then drew our ship up on to the sands, and when it was beached, we got out of her andstepped ashore. After disembarking, we fell soundasleep on the shore, where we waited untildaybreak. As soon as early dawn shone forth,rosy-fingered, Circe dressed herself in her finestclothes, as she knew of our coming. She came asfast as she could, and her handmaidens came withher, bringing us bread, meat and wine, of whichthere was plenty. Then she stood in the midst of us and began tospeak. "You have done bold things during yourtravels," she said, "so now you can stay here forthe rest of the day, feast until you are full, and goon with your voyage at daybreak tomorrowmorning, as you sail again over the sea. In themeantime, I will tell Odysseus about the courseyou should take, and I will explain everything tohim that will happen on the route. This will preventyour suffering from misadventure, either by land orsea, as I do not wish you to suffer any hindrance onyour journey away from here."

We agreed to do as she had said, and feastedthroughout the long day until the going down of thesun. All day long we ate and drank before the sunwent down. When the sun had set and darkness cameover the land, my comrades laid themselves down tosleep by the stern cables of the ship. Whilst they laydown and slept, Circe took me by the hand, and ledme apart from my company, so I was seated awayfrom the others. She reclined on a long chair by myside and asked me all about our adventures. Sheenquired about what I had seen and done.
