Introduction to TERMINAL

• In 1920’s, air travel is only for the super-rich.• 1933 a young man, Morris Jackaman want to give something

revolutionary to the Beehive Gatwick that is the TERMINAL.• Developed the idea of a circular terminal building reputedly in

response to a throwaway comment by his father.• His idea had revolutionised the entire airport history.• It was the world's first fully integrated airport building and working

terminal.

Page 6: TERMINAL AIB

Cont.……• Advantages claimed for the design included efficient use of space and

greater safety of aircraft movements.• But we all know that as the sizes increases the there will be a lots of

wastage in the interior.• So in later years all (almost) the designs are based on simple

rectangular.

Page 7: TERMINAL AIB

Multi-Terminal Concept• As the passenger population is increasing the

demand of air traffic is also increased.• This creates the a large planes into occupy the less

space in the terminal.• So therefore the terminal started to grow up (or)

expanding.• After a certain extent limit, this extension turned

into division.

Page 8: TERMINAL AIB

…Disadvantages• Confusedness to costumers

• Eg. MT East – Ter. 3 – Strand 6 – Pos. 2• Multiple terminal will have multiple Entry/Exit.• Passenger service facilities will not be same at

all terminals.• Security problems• Connectivity – ITS (Internal Transport System)

OUR CONCEPT

Page 10: TERMINAL AIB

AIM/THEME• Make airport centralized as UNIT TERMINAL SYSTEM (UTS).• Such that all the previous disadvantages can be overcome.• The other problems which arise with UTS, should also be

compensated.• Flexibility• Expandability• Aesthetics• Integrity & compactness• Low cost airport

Page 11: TERMINAL AIB

After a Prolong Research…..

• An unique shape is required that can make all the problem the end.• In search of this all the geometric/man made shapes

were tested.• Every shape was tested through all the different

properties.• For so the software used was Auto-Turn & Auto-Trace.• After a 5 year research on these shapes we came to

final phase of design only 2 years before.

Page 12: TERMINAL AIB

Final design

• We were revolving around this shape but didn’t exactly found.• At last we found and gave a exact

proposed shape.• This shape is the mixture of the old

circular & the present rectangular terminal.

Benefits of present design

1. Flexibility

2. Expansibility

3. Aesthetic considerations

4. Compactness & Integrity

5. Low cost Airport

Details

Page 15: TERMINAL AIB

Flexibility

• The size can be re-adjustable.• It has high degree of flexibility, without wasting the interior valuable space. It

can be designed according to the passenger population and air traffic.• The central part is provided with atrium. It has a flexibility to mount the ATC

Tower (Air Traffic Control) through the atrium.• This will give the airport a complete patrol and control, since it is in the

Center.

Page 16: TERMINAL AIB

Expansibility

• It is greatly expandable according to passenger population in future.• It gives the provision for expansion, since it has no end walls that

needs to be demolished at the time of expansion.• It is also designed in such a way the junctions the shear forces are

made zero, with the unique design concept of di-eccentric loading.

Page 18: TERMINAL AIB

Aesthetic considerations• It will be very beautiful to watch, since our eyes are will be

delightful to watch the symmetric objects.• It is perfectly symmetric and it continuous to maintain its symmetric

nature with its expansion.• At any course of time it does not divert from symmetric. It has also

uniqueness that it has given provision for ATC tower.• Making it look like gesture and has a miniature effect.• As if it is guided with green building concept, it look even more

beautiful.

Page 19: TERMINAL AIB

Compactness & Integrity

• It is a single component and it maintains with expansion.• So therefore there will not any kind of division (or) partition during

the course of time.• It look very compacted towards the Center.• And fortunate to have like it one.• All the airport related activities can be performed inside the terminal

building and maintains high level of security.

Page 20: TERMINAL AIB

Low cost Airport

• Since the design is very flexible and easy to implement, there is no need for spending money for design consultant.• This can be implemented at any level of population. So easy to design,

build and renovate.• This all properties makes this shape can be used in low cost airports.• And it will be very applicable in India, since recently in 12 five year

plan 2012-2017 the central govt. has identified 42 locations for low cost airports.

Comparisons

Page 22: TERMINAL AIB

Our Design vs. Atkins Design (MIT)• To known the actual capacity.• The present design is compared with the Mumbai International

Terminal (MIT).• Present capacity – 18 Boing 747 • Our present design – 35 Airbus A380 = 50 Boing 747• This done by raster modelling with tracing.

Number Game

• Max. Capacity – 86 A380 Planes• Max. payload passengers –

86*605,000 kg• Expansion ratio from Max. to

Present = 5.8• All the 32 emergency exits are

provided at its max. extends.• 1 Control Tower can be

mounted.
