REFLECTING ON TERM THREE We have come once again to the end of another busy term and do look forward to a two-week break with some anticipation. It is of course a timely break for us all. Hopefully, many families can enjoy some quality time together and some special activities during the holiday period. We feel very satisfied with the outcome of our major school programs, such as the intensive school swimming program for our Prep and 3 to 6 students and the senior athletics programs. We thank all staff, parents and students who have contributed to the success of our various sporting adventures, and we particularly thank Mr Pollard for his hard work and organisation. We thank also our grade 3 and 4 teachers and other dedicated staff who organised and supported the grade 3/4 camp at Mt Evelyn. It was a tiring but highly rewarding exercise for the terrific group of children who worked so well together, participating in a variety of activities and striving to overcome the challenges they faced to make the camp a great success for all. The student led conferences, a feature of parent teacher interviews in grade 2 to 6, were again well received. Our regular and varied assessments of student learning indicate we are meeting the needs of our students and extending them appropriately. The results of our grades three and five students on the national testing (NAPLAN) have been distributed to students and their families. We believe that students will be able to look closely at their NAPLAN achievements with their parents with a degree of satisfaction and pride and knowledge that they have done their best. They will also show the areas where we can all work harder to reach our academic goals. As always, we do caution everyone that NAPLAN is just one assessment of each child’s learning and at Carnegie Primary School, we are committed to developing the whole child through a wide curriculum that extends well beyond what NAPLAN assesses.
We invite parents to make a time to see your child’s teacher if there are areas of concern about your child’s learning. Teachers have continued to work hard to use all our teaching spaces in innovative and flexible ways. We continue to adopt collaborative, engaging and targeted teaching methods to ensure all students have better opportunities to be challenged at their point of need. Preparation for our building works are proceeding rapidly with the arrival of an additional Mod 5 double portable last week and our significant capital works project scheduled to commence initial site preparation sometime in term 4 if all remains on track. It will be a very busy time ahead and we will need to be patient and flexible but we could not be more committed to providing the best learning spaces and the best play environment for our children, but it is a balancing act at the moment. Finally, thank you to the PFA for their continued contributions including the Trivia Night, Father’s Day Stall and recent film night. The fruits of their labours were recently spent on a new split system air conditioner for our year 3 portable. Some PFA raised money will be spent on furniture and equipment for our new portable and we will soon be seeing the construction of a new sandpit in the area near the Truganini Road side of our prep building. Thank you all, the parents and friends of Carnegie, for your continued support and encouragement in all your various ways. FOOTY DAY & JSC MNDA FUNDRAISING The end of term 3 wouldn’t be the same at Carnegie without a Footy Colours Day, allowing students to dress up and parade in their favourite sporting team colours. We will once again be celebrating the best of Australian sporting culture on Friday, the last day of term. We will assemble in the hall or in the normal assembly area, depending on the weather. Children will be invited to dress up in their favourite colours of footy, soccer, rugby, netball or other favourite sporting team. As part of this dress up day, the Junior School Council will be raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Australia (MNDA). This is a charity that is close to our Carne-gie community’s hearts and the money raised will go towards helping to find a cure for MND, which is a terminal neurological disease. There is currently no known cure and no effective treatment for MND. The
JSC are asking children to bring along a gold coin donation to help support this very important cause. LAST DAY OF TERM The last day of term 3 is Friday 22nd September. The children finish school at 2.30pm; they will be dismissed from their classrooms. We wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday, hopefully enjoying some lovely spring weather with family and friends. SUNSMART Term 4 is nearly upon us and I remind families that all students should be wearing their sun smart hat when playing outside at recess and lunch breaks when term 4 commences. School hats can be purchased from Primary School Wear Uniform Shop and are also available from the office. Plain navy sun smart hats that can be purchased from local depart-ment stores are also acceptable, particularly if you like to keep a spare one! TERM ONE - 2018 Just letting families know that Monday 29th January and Tuesday 30
th January 2018
are pupil free days with year 1 to 6 students commencing their 2018 school year on Wednesday 31st January and our new preps joining us on Thursday 1st February. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT PARENT - IDEAS - By Michael Grose So what does an emotionally intelligent parent look like? And importantly what is the impact on kids, parents and families of this approach? Emotionally intelligent parents have the following five attributes in common. They will usually: 1. Listen more and judge less There is nothing better than being understood. Parents who operate from an emotionally-smart mindset are more likely to listen to their kids when emotions are high, trying to access what may be going on, rather than clamping down their behaviour or closing them down with well-meaning advice. Impact: Better, more open relationships. 2. Accept strong emotions Anyone who lives with teenagers will know that emotions can run very high. They can say the worst possible things to each other and, at times, to you. Ten minutes after delivering a hateful tirade they can be cuddling up to the person who was the butt of their anger, frustration or anxiety. Emotionally intelligent parents know that feelings need to be expressed rather than bottled up, and allowed to
fester. They also believe there is nothing so bad that a child can’t give voice to in a family. However, there are behaviours that are not unacceptable. Impact: A healthy expression of emotions. 3. Focus on the present Most parents are rightfully future-focused. We focus on the homework that needs to be handed in tomorrow; the washing that needs to be done; the meal that needs to be cooked. That’s part of everyday life. Children generally focus on the here and now. That of course can be frustrating to a task-oriented future-focused mother or father. However when we lower our gaze we are more likely to pick up how kids are feeling, and importantly help them understand and manage their moods and emotions. Impact: Happier families and less stress felt at home.

A huge congratulations to all Grade 3 – 6 students who represented Carnegie Primary so admirably at the District Athletics Carnival last Friday at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve. There were some fantastic achievements and, as always, the Carnegie kids carried themselves respectfully and with great sportsmanship throughout the day. We had 14 students successfully qualify for the Division Carnival in an amazing 15 events (including relay)! The Carnegie school community has many amazing students learning some incredible maths knowledge. Dee Vision is this week’s resident reporter looking to share student
success stories. This edition features our first ‘mini-mathematican’ story.
Matthew Callaghan Year 6. Dee Vision : So Matthew, I hear you’ve been
involved in the Mini-Mathematicians program
at Sir John Monash Science School in Clayton.
What’s that all about?
Matthew: I went for five sessions and I was
doing extra maths activities.
Dee Vision : What were the activities,
Matthew?
Matthew : Coding, cards, patterns, treasure
island chance and logic and paradoxes.
Dee Vision : Who was guiding you through
these activities?
Matthew : A Monash University student and
Year 10 and 11 students from John Monash
Science School.
Dee Vision : What was your favourite session?
Matthew : Coding because I was able to
come back and share it with my year 6
friends. I also liked the card shuffling activity
but it was a bit too hard to share.
Dee Vision : Why do you like maths so much?
Matthew : It’s something I feel comfortable
doing and I love that I’m always learning new
skills.
Dee Vision : Why do you think maths is an
important area to learn?
Matthew : Because maths is everywhere in the
community and many jobs require you to
have maths skills whether you like the subject
or not.
Dee Vision: Speaking of jobs, what do you
want to do in the future Matthew?
Matthew : A doctor. I would like to be able to
help people.
Dee Vision : A doctor, wow! Good luck with
that Matthew. Thanks for being our first
inspiring ‘mini-mathematician’ and thanks for
representing CPS at the Sir John Monash

As part of the new Digital Technologies Curriculum, our Year 5 and 6 students have been investigating binary code as part of the Digital Systems strand. The students researched what binary is and how computers use it. They then created short videos to communicate their understandings. These videos were then uploaded to the internet and the students created QR Codes to share their work. Using a smartphone or tablet, you can use a QR scanning app to scan their codes (below) and watch some of their videos. Josh Acklom ICT / DigiTech Coordinator

HALLOWEEN DISCO This year’s disco will be held on Saturday 21st October in the school hall.
Preps –Year 2 will be from 5-6.30pm
Years 3-6 will be from 7-8.30pm. More details will follow early next term.

Bakers Delight in Koornang Rd, as every term they
donate 5% of all sales to the school.
They have also just announced that they will now be donating 20% of sales
on a Sunday– so stock up on a Sunday if you can!

Cost for the session is $18 YLV’S September Holiday Program is now available. For bookings visit our website: www.ylv.com.au Cost for the day is $50 plus an additional cost if an incursion/excursion has been planned. The additional cost is stated on the Holiday Program flyer. The Holiday Program operates from 7am-6.30pm each week day, except on public holidays. For the day, you will need to provide morning/afternoon tea, lunch and a refillable water bottle.
