9 September 2019

Dear Parent

Welcome back to the new school year I hope you have all had a very enjoyable summer break and that our students are refreshed and ready to take on the challenges for what promises to be another busy and exciting year in the life of Priestlands.

The Class of 2019 departed on a high after collecting an outstanding set of GCSE results. Provisional figures indicate that this is likely to be our most successful year yet based on the government’s headline figure of progress 8. This is the measure that indicates how much value a school adds to each student and is showing that Priestlands is consistently delivering positive outcomes for students year on year.

Headline figures as follows:

78% students secured the new standard pass (9-4) in English and Maths

56% students secured the new strong pass (9-5) in English and Maths

87% of students secured a grade 9-4 in English

84% of students secured a grade 9-4 in Maths

82% of students secured at least 2 Science grades 9-4

New records in Languages, Design and Technology, PE and Statistics.

This was the first year with all subjects taking GCSEs with the new 9-1 grading including more and longer exams at the end of the course. Students should take credit for their achievements and staff for their hard work and dedication in successfully preparing students for these new challenges. I would like to thank Parents and carers for the outstanding support you give students during their time with us.

Staffing news We are delighted that Priestlands is fully staffed at the start of this academic year. We are joined by new colleagues listed below, some staff have changed roles, and we congratulate staff who got married over the summer holidays and have changed their names; Miss Joynson has returned as Mrs Ritchie, Miss Leigh has returned as Mrs Cooke and Ms Harris is now Mrs O’Neil.

Support Staff Miss Clarke joins us as a Cover Supervisor. Mr Davies joins us as our new PE & Sports Apprentice. Mrs Palmer and Mrs Wells join us as Achievement Support Assistants in our SEN team. Mrs K Woodcock will be changing roles to the post of SLT & Study Centre Admin Officer and we welcome Mrs Storey who joins us in the same role. Mrs Farmer joins us as our Senior Receptionist. Mrs Wild will now be School Matron for two days a week (Monday-Tuesday) whilst remaining as a Cover Supervisor for the other three days. Ms Van Meurs joins us as School Matron for three days a week (Wednesday-Friday). Ms Hoogenboom-Marchant and Mrs Peacock both join our Kitchen team.

Art Miss C Woodcock will now be teaching Art full time.

Design Technology Mrs Leather joins the team, teaching Textiles as well as some Art and Food Preparation.

English We welcomed Mrs Cant back from maternity leave just before the end of last term. Mrs Russell joins us as Head of English, Mr Bell joins the team having helped us out in Maths last year, and Miss Nicholson also joins the team.

Geography Mr Curtis joins the team.

History We welcomed Mrs Wagstaff back from maternity leave just before the end of last term.

Maths Mr Hack and Mrs Mitchell join the team.

P.E. Mrs Peacock takes up post as Head of PE and Mr Ledsham joins us as Deputy Head of PE.

Science We welcome Mr Welch to the Science team.

I know that new colleagues and existing staff alike look forward to the new term with energy and enthusiasm.

Kenya I would like to congratulate all the students who spent nearly half of their summer holiday in Kenya on an adventure of a lifetime. They spent time working with local communities building a school and teaching the children there. They learnt first-hand about living in Africa and have built connections many are keen to retain. If you want to find out more then have a look at their blog here: https://priestlandsinkenya2019.wordpress.com/

House News A new school year means we reset the house competition for a fresh start and a new set of events. Last year’s championship was closely contested and went right to the very last event of the year. We now have new champions with Forest wrestling the cup from Solent after two successful years.

School Uniform Because of your continued support and co-operation, I am pleased to be able to report that the vast majority of students have again returned to school looking smart and ready to work. I know that these high standards reflect a wider commitment that will enable us to continue establishing a positive learning environment in school. Thank you for your ongoing support. Further guidance, including examples of appropriate shoes can be found on the school website should you need any clarification.

School Photographs Once again, Cardwell & Simons Photographers will come into school to take individual portrait and tutor group photographs of all students. I have also arranged for the photographer to take group portraits of family members on Wednesday 11th at breaktime. Based on previous years’ experience, some Y11 students request photographs of friendship groups. I am happy to arrange for these, provided that the request is agreed by one of the parents and this can be facilitated at break on Friday 13th.

The photographs will be taken on Wednesday 11th and Friday 13th September. I expect proofs to be available by the end of September and orders to be fulfilled before half-term, well in time for Christmas presents!

If you would like a family or group photograph, please email [email protected] by Wednesday 11th September and instruct your children to come to the main hall at break on the relevant day.

Site development summer work We are delighted that Lymington and Pennngton Town council agreed to support finding for the refurbishment of our library to make a new vibrant study centre. This will be open to GCSE students every night of the week for private study. There is still an excellent selection of books and all students are encouraged to visit, read and take books home. We have also completed the refurbishment of a classroom in the main building to create a large, modern 10th Science lab so now all lessons will be delivered in specialist rooms. The site team have carried out an extensive programme of maintenance to ensure the site as a whole is looking sharp and ready for our students.

Friends of Priestlands School (our PTA) The Friends of Priestlands School (formerly PTA) would like to welcome all parents (particularly new parents) back from the summer break. Schools have tighter constraints on their budgets and now, more than ever before, the role of the Parents’ Association is important for funding those additional events / projects that schools alone cannot fund.

The mosaic tree can be seen in the Main Hall and those families / businesses who have sent through donations to the school for forthcoming funding projects are being added to the tree.

The first Friends’ meeting of the year will take place on Friday 13th September at 9.15am in Lounges Coffee Shop on Lymington high street. Last year, we had many new parents join and we hope this year more parents will come along to support the school. If you have thoughts and ideas and would like to be a part of the Friends please come along and you will be made welcome.

Also taking place this term, the Friends of Priestlands have organised a welcome event for all new parents.

YEAR 7 PARENTS' WELCOME EVENT Friday 11th October 2019 at 7.00pm Priestlands School Main Hall Please email [email protected] to be kept up to date.

Informal coffee mornings will be held on the 2nd Friday of the month at 9:15 in Lounges, and we are looking forward to the Autumn Term Quiz Night on Friday 22nd November, 7:00 for 7:30pm, Main School Hall. It is always an entertaining evening so we hope to see lots of you there.

Keeping in touch and receiving information We subscribe to a number of platforms to try and bring you up to date information about your child(ren)’s learning and to enable you to share information with us. If you are a new parent please look at all the apps mentioned below. If you are already up to speed then the only one you need to read about is the SIMS app which is now available. Our long term goal is to have one app that will meet all our needs but currently we believe that each of these has unique strengths that make them all worth using.

Groupcall Xpressions App As you know, we frequently send out text messages to parents to alert them to future events, safeguarding tips, parents’ evenings and the like. Text messages can add up to a significant cost for the school.

You can help us save money at no cost to yourselves. All you need to do is install the Groupcall Xpressions app free of charge. We can then send you messages via the app at no cost to the school. This app is completely free of charge to you and can be installed on your mobile phone or tablet. It currently supports both Apple iOS and Android devices and you’ll be able to see information for your children. The majority of parents have now successfully installed the app.

Once you have installed the app and successfully logged in, it will probably take 24 hours or so before you see your child(ren)’s information. Once running, you will be able to see the following information:

Free messages sent by the school delivered directly to the app Attendance records and absences Timetable School calendar

Please ensure we have your correct mobile number and email address on our school database to ensure you can use the app. By using the SIMS parent App (details below) you can update your information youself, or you may email updated information to [email protected]. You’ll need to make sure you keep these details up to date to maintain access to the service. If you have received this letter by email you are at least half-way there!

If you experience difficulties using the app, please also email [email protected]; we will then contact Groupcall on your behalf and ask them to resolve the issue.

Show My Homework The school continues to invest in an online service for homework. Teachers now set homework in class and post it online. All students will be issued with letters giving them their own login details and the login details for parents. The site can be easily accessed via the shortcut on every page of the school’s website. This service allows parents to track their children’s homework and gain access to the tasks set and the associated resources. If you download the app then you will be able to monitor and support with homework tasks and deadlines. Please note that Show My Homework is part of a platform called Satchel One. You may or may not see references to Satchel One depending on how you access it, but if you do, do not worry; logins will still work and you will be in the right place.

SIMS Parent APP Ensuring that parents are kept informed has a significant impact on pupil progress. SIMS Parent provides a window into the live data in our Schools Information Management System (SIMS). Upon initial release, parents can use it to check their personal information is correct, and to submit changes to this information, which has historically only been collected annually via paper Data Collection Sheets. During the year we plan to add additional functionality, with additional links, to Attendance, Assessment Reports, Behaviour and Achievement, School Calendar or Options choices. Link: http://www.priestlands.hants.sch.uk/SIMSParent

Student Record Book (SRB) This year, we have chosen the A5 diary format for SRBs. We do not expect students to record all homework in these diaries but they are useful for reminders and as a means of communicating non-sensitive messages between home and school. For this reason, even though it is no longer used to record homework, we ask that you continue to check and sign diaries weekly. We expect students to have them with them every day. It will also be used as the means of communication if they need to be out of lesson for any reason, e.g. to go to the toilet, to see matron.

School Meals The school meal deal price has been held at £2.30 currently. This means that, for students receiving free school meals, their entitlement will also be £2.30. We run the service as a cost neutral operation to ensure we give best possible value to students and there is an emphasis on healthy eating and being environmentally friendly.

Free School Meals eligibility Free School Meals are available only to children whose parents/guardians receive one or more of the following support payments. Children who get any of the benefits in their own right (ie they get benefits payments directly instead of through a parent or guardian) can also get free school meals.

Income Support

Income-based Jobseekers Allowance

Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

The guaranteed element of Pension Credit

Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

No other benefits qualify for free school meals.

If you would like to apply for free school meals, you will need to make an application on this website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals

If your child is eligible, the school will be notified and will contact you within 48 hours (during term time only) by email to confirm when the free school meals will commence.

Online payments (“Parent Pay”) The school also uses an online payment system (Tucasi). This system allows parents to make payments to our school using the internet. A shortcut to the Tucasi website can be found at the top of every page of our website.

All parents will receive a letter this week with full details. These letters give instructions on how to create an account to use for online payments. Family accounts can be linked either at our school or other schools but each child must have their own account.

We would encourage parents to take advantage of this service – amongst other things, it will stop students carrying money or cheques which could be lost or forgotten at the bottom of a bag!

If you have received a letter but lost it and need a replacement letter, please contact the Finance Department.

Absence Line: 01590-613440 We have a dedicated phone number to report student absence: 01590-613440. Please use this number which has a voicemail service outside school hours.

Attendance Thanks to everyone’s support, most students’ attendance last year was excellent and on average attendance is higher at Priestlands than other schools nationally and locally.

The law relating to absence seems to be changing all the time. However, all local authorities have a Code of Practice for Attendance which all schools must still follow. For us, this means:

Unless the issuing of a Penalty Notice would conflict with other intervention strategies in place or other sanctions already being processed, we will have to issue a Penalty Notice where the student has been:

absent without authorisation for 10 or more half-day sessions in a 10-week period – these do not need to be consecutive; or

late on 10 or more occasions in any 10 weeks – again, these do not need to be consecutive; or

We will not normally approve any request for absence where a child’s attendance for the previous 12 months is below 95%.

Each penalty notice carries a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days of the penalty notice being posted. If the fine is not paid within 21 days the penalty is automatically increased to £120 if paid within 28 days. If the fine remains unpaid the Hampshire County Council will consider prosecution for the non-attendance. Separate penalty notices are usually issued to both parents.

Please be aware that if a Penalty Notice has previously been issued and this has been ineffective in addressing the absenteeism, the case must be referred to the Attendance Legal Panel (ALP) who will then decide whether to issue a subsequent Penalty Notice or recommend alternative intervention which may include parental prosecution.

First Aid in School The school employs staff to administer emergency first aid to students. They also carry a small supply of feminine hygiene products. However, parents should be aware that these staff are qualified first-aiders, not qualified nurses. They are not able to deal with out-of-school non-emergency queries and do not hold supplies of medicines. To avoid confusion with the Primary Care Trust school nurse, we call our staff “Matrons”.

The School Nurse Service (not the school’s own ‘matrons’) The health services who work with young people of school age (including the School Nurse attached to Priestlands) offer support regarding health or medical matters as well as a confidential service within their professional code of practice. The School Nurse has asked us to provide her with a list of the names and contact details of all of our students so that she is able to respond quickly should a request for support be received. If, as a parent, or as a student aged 16 or over, you do not want the School Nurse Service to receive this information from us, you should let me know in writing by Friday 15th September.

Nut allergies We have a number of students who have nut allergies. For some, even the smell of nuts can trigger a life threatening allergic reaction. For this reason, we ask that students do not bring nuts or products containing nuts onto the school site.

Measles, Chicken Pox and Shingles Please may we ask for your cooperation with an important matter? We have students and staff who are receiving medical treatment for cancer. This puts them at risk if they are exposed to measles, chicken pox or shingles. Please let us know immediately if anyone in your household is suspected of having any of these illnesses.

Adopted from care If your child is adopted from care, often the only way we will find out is by you telling us. It is important you do as your young person is entitled to extra resources and the school will get extra funding if we register this information.

Peer Mentors Miss Jamieson, our ELSA, has trained a team of Y11 students, who are on duty every lunchtime from 1:00pm to 1:30pm, with bases in the Hub. Peer Mentors also attend drop-in clubs and offer help with homework. They are easily recognisable by their purple polo shirts and badges. We hope that any student needing someone to talk to or seeking advice will feel comfortable approaching one of our dedicated team who are there to support their peers.

Lost Property Several bags of lost property were brought to the Matrons’ office during the holiday period. Similarly, a range of items were left in lockers that were cleared during the summer break. Notes have been sent to the owners of all named items, to ask them to collect their property.

There will be a sale of all unclaimed property shortly before half-term. We will let parents know the date of the sale via text message and the school website. Anything not bought will be donated to charity.

Bicycles More students are now seeking to cycle or to school. This is something we are happy to support. Cycle routes are being created along more of our local roads and this will improve safety.

Students must use the school cycle storage areas next to the Technology Building, next to the coach house or between Gurney Dixon and the Performing Arts Centre. They must not use the Health and Leisure Centre cycle racks.

I remind parents that students cycling to school must wear appropriate safety helmets. Students will not be able to bring bikes into school unless they are wearing safety helmets. Please note that the school cannot accept responsibility for checking that cycles are roadworthy.

Skateboards & Scooters There is no appropriate area in school where students can use skateboards or scooters safely and staff are not able to look after these bulky items during the school day. Therefore, students should not bring them into school.

Behaviour Last year, behaviour in school was excellent. Thank you to parents for your continued help and support. Nonetheless, maintaining these standards and improving the behaviour of the minority will always be a priority for us. We expect all students to take responsibility for their own behaviour and be aware of the school’s procedures and expectations. These are clearly set out on our website and in the SRB. In return, staff offer much praise, support and encouragement to students.

Full details of our approach to behaviour management can be found on our website. This includes the Governors’ Statement of principles to promote good behaviour at Priestlands school at: http://fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/Priestlands/MainFolder/Governors/Policies/Governors-Statement-December-2017.pdf and an outline of the Behaviour Charter and day-to-day operation at: http://fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/Priestlands/MainFolder/Governors/Policies/Behaviour-Policy-January-2017.pdf

Detentions Most students will complete their school career without being placed in detention. Last year, we adopted a very simple procedure. If staff issue a child with a detention, they will write a note in the SRB if the student has it with them. The school will also send a reminder text message the day before the detention is due to take place.

The message is simply a reminder. Staff will re-organise detentions only in exceptional circumstances and if agreed by a senior member of staff.

Last year we trialled issuing a same day break detention for students arriving late to school. We subsequently noticed a significant improvement in punctuality and intend to continue with this approach this academic year.

Reset On the very rare occasion where a student has to be removed from lessons for part of the day or a whole day they used to go to our ‘internal isolation’ room. We have made adjustments for this year and have introduced a new programme called ‘Reset’ based in the Hub with a focus on restorative work and a successful reintegration back to their normal timetable.

Electronic Devices We prefer students not to bring electronic devices into school, but understand that some parents feel happier if their child has a phone with them. Unfortunately, they can be easily damaged and, if lost, are difficult to find.

The school cannot take responsibility for electronic devices that are lost or stolen and, whilst we would assist with any investigation, we could not promise to invest substantial amounts of staff time. I strongly advise parents to ensure that devices are covered by home insurance policies and would suggest that, if it is absolutely necessary for a student to bring one into school, they bring a cheap, basic model.

I shall be reminding students of our policy and asking staff to enforce it:

Mobile phones and music players need to be switched off, out of sight in bags and not checked during the school day unless use of the device is specifically required for that lesson.

If you need to contact your child in an emergency during the school day please do so through reception.

Car Park School car parking facilities are limited and the main car park is not provided for the use of parents. If parents are simply dropping into school for a short while, there will not normally be a problem, but there are difficulties for Health and Leisure Centre customers when parents fill up or block the car park, especially at the beginning and end of the school day. Please follow the one way system and ensure traffic is enabled to flow.

It would be helpful if parents would avoid driving onto the school site at the beginning or end of the day. I know that this is not ideal, but it would be greatly appreciated if parents are able to arrange to meet their children elsewhere or to collect their youngsters after the 3:15 to 3:30 pressure point.

If you must drive onto the site please ensure you wait in a marked bay. Waiting is not permitted in front of spaces, or in the marked disabled spaces unless displaying a blue disabled badge.

Vacancies Parents may be interested to know that we will shortly be advertising for an Achievement Support Assistant due to an increase in the number of staff needed in our SEN department. Details will appear on the Vacancies page of our website by the end of next week. Please note that applications must be submitted on a completed Priestlands Application Form.

Parent Governor Vacancies During this term we will be looking for two new Parent Governors.

The role of the Board of Governors

Priestlands School has always aimed for a partnership with parents, which undoubtedly brings great benefits to the children. One of the most significant ways you can help in promoting this aim is to volunteer to be a Parent Governor. The Board of Governors’ main task is to support the school, ensure that students receive high quality education and plan for future development and improvement.

The role of a Parent Governor

Parent Governors are welcome as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the Board of Governors is aware of the views of parents and the local community. We feel sure that there are parents prepared to take on this important role and give their time and commitment to helping us to continue to improve the school’s performance.

To be a parent governor you should have:

A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children

Good inter-personal skills, curiosity and a willingness to learn and develop new skills

The specific skills required to ensure the Board of Governors delivers effective governance

How to apply If you’re interested in applying for the role please complete the application form at the end of this letter and return to the school by 12:00 noon on Monday 23rd September. Please note that for the protection of children, all governor appointments are subject to a vetting process including a DBS and identity check.

If you would like to find out more about the role please contact Caroline Clitherow, Clerk to Governors, on 01590 677033 / email: [email protected]

Information documents You can find the following documents on our website on the Headteacher’s letters page, and as attachments to this letter:

Statement on Bullying

Guidance on the operation of our Behaviour Management Policy

Summary of our Complaints Procedure

Statement on Confidentiality Privacy Notice

Thank you if you have read all the way to the end of this letter! There is always a lot to share at the start of the year. I look forward to another successful year for all members of the school community.

Yours sincerely

P G Main

Priestlands Diamond Club Set up by the Friends of Priestlands as part of our 60th birthday celebrations in 2017, to provide a vehicle for those who have expressed an interest in helping the school. A mosaic mural of a tree has been installed in the Main Hall and anyone can sponsor a leaf which will be engraved with the name(s) of the sponsor(s) and then attached to the tree.

The tree will serve as a permanent reminder of the school’s 60th birthday and will also enable us to say thank you to the individuals, families and organisations that contribute – and, of course, the tree can continue to grow more leaves over the years!

There are five kinds of leaf on the tree:

A platinum leaf: £1000 A gold leaf: £500 A silver leaf: £250 A bronze leaf: £100 A smaller green leaf: £25

The money raised will go towards the cost of capital projects that would otherwise be unaffordable such as:

1. New Minibus: £25,000 ACHIEVED 2. Creating a suite of iMacs in Music: £40,000 ACHIEVED 3. Creating an amphitheatre: £80,000 4. Re-furbishing the Library: £40,000 ACHIEVED 5. Sports Pavilion: £12,000 6. Resurfacing the tennis courts: £20,000
