Mathew 28:19-20 Term 4 | Issue 02 – 26 Oct 2016 HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN The name "Halloween" comes from the All Saints Day celebraon of the early Chrisan church (in early 600’s), a day set aside for the solemn remembrance of the martyrs. All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day, began the me of remembrance. At that me, The pagan Samhain fesval celebrated the final harvest, death, and the onset of winter, for three days—October 31 to November 2. The Celts believed the curtain dividing the living and the dead liſted during Samhain to allow the spirits of the dead to walk among the living—ghosts haunng the earth. Into that dark, supersous, pagan world, God mercifully shined the light of the gospel. Newly converted Chrisans armed themselves with the truth and no longer feared a haunng from departed spirits returning to earth. Nonetheless, they were tempted to re- join the pagan fesvals, especially Samhain. Pope Gregory IV reacted to the pagan challenge by moving the celebraon of All Saints Day in the ninth century—he set the date at November 1, right in the middle of Samhain. As the centuries passed, Samhain and All Hallows Eve mixed together. Halloween didn't become an American holiday unl the immigraon of the working classes from the Brish Isles in the late nineteenth century. hp://www.gty.org/resources/arcles/A123/chrisans-and-halloween WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT HALLOWEEN? Although our modern celebraon of Halloween has religious influences, there is nothing biblical about the holiday. It is affiliated with "All Saints' Day," but even this holiday is not supported by Scripture. The Bible does not tell us to pray for the dead. There is no purgatory the dead need to escape from. The spirits of the dead do not come back to visit us on earth. And although the Bible does not forbid us from remembering our loved ones, neither does it ordain the pracce, and aempng to contact them was punishable by death (Levicus 19:31). It is not biblical to endorse or represent demons, evil, sin, or anything that would lead another to sin. Our heart atude should not be one that tries to jusfy the secular tradion of Halloween. Instead, we should strive to glorify God in all that we do. Our acons should reflect God's leading on our own lives. HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN The name "Halloween" comes from the All Saints Day celebration of the early Christian church (in early 600’s), a day set aside for the solemn remembrance of the martyrs. All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day, began the time of remembrance. At that time, The pagan Samhain festival

celebrated the final harvest, death, and the onset of winter, for three days—October 31 to November 2. The Celts believed the curtain dividing the living and the dead lifted during Samhain to allow the spirits of the dead to walk among the living—ghosts haunting the earth. Into that dark, superstitious, pagan world, God mercifully shined the light of the gospel. Newly converted Christians armed themselves with the truth and no longer feared a haunting from departed spirits returning to earth. Nonetheless, they were tempted to re-join the pagan festivals, especially Samhain. Pope Gregory IV reacted to the pagan challenge by moving the celebration of All Saints Day in the ninth century—he set the date at November 1, right in the middle of Samhain. As the centuries passed, Samhain and All Hallows Eve mixed together. Halloween didn't become an American holiday until the immigration of the working classes from the British Isles in the late nineteenth century. http://www.gty.org/resources/articles/A123/christians-and-halloween

Well done to the year 3 class, who recently had a story published in the Community Newspapers. The report was about the whole school Shoebox Packing Party last term. This is the Second great achievement of the year 3 persuasive writing skills! The first being their letter to Baked 180, which resulted in a generous donation toward their cupcake sale. The students’ goal was to persuade the reporters to come to the school and view the packing party and take photos. The reporters were too busy to do this so used the accurate information provided by the class on which to base their story.

The year 6 graduation will be held on Thursday

17th November. Mark it off in your diary now if you are a Year

6 parent or student.

THE EGGSALENT EGG SANDWICH

On Tuesday before lunch, Year 2A made a yummy egg sandwich in our classroom following a procedure. First Miss Ashmore pulled out all the ingredients. Next we watched Miss Ashmore make and eat it. She had to wait to finish her mouthful before she could talk. Then Miss Ashmore told us to wash out hands and keep them clean the whole time. After that Miss Ashmore told us to put some bread on a plate. Then we spread butter on the bread. Next we took the shell off the hard boiled egg and smashed the egg with a plastic fork. Some people wanted mayonnaise to make the egg sticky. Then we put the egg on the buttered bread.

After that some people put butter on another piece of sliced bread and put it on top. Then we cut it in half and gobbled it up. We loved it because it was eggsalent! By Biak, Brian, Dyllin, Gracey, Henry, Katy, Layla, Rebecca and Sarah.
