TERM 3 WEEK 3 27th JULY 2016 Dear Parents, Recently I had a first-hand experience of the dangers of the internet for children. The scary part of this incident was how innocently it commenced and how quickly it escalated and the threat appeared. My son Jack had heard from a few of his friends at school about a free game that he could download on his iPad called Tank Io. We looked it up together and it appeared more than ok for a child of eight years old. Essentially it was shapes that were meant to be the tanks undertaking a challenging course and trying to avoid each other. I was sitting next to Jack when he as playing and keeping an eye on what he was up to. After about two minutes of the game other names started appearing on the side of the screen and it was obvious now that this game was linked on the net and he was playing against people from all over the world. Within seconds he said to me; “Hey Dad, what does stark naked mean?” Straight away alarm bells rang and further investigation uncovered that ‘Stark Naked’ had his own world in the game and he was inviting Jack to join. Immediately we shut the game down and deleted the app. Even with all of the Cybersafety, internet awareness, student safety etc. training that I have done over the years this episode still stunned me. How quickly what appeared to be a safe child’s game changed into a volatile area was unnerving. Upon reflection it stands to reason that people with these disgusting ulterior motives would spend their time within these children’s games as that is their preying ground. I urge you to always be aware of your child’s internet use and talk to them about the dangers that are out there within the cyber world. It was an opportunity for us to use this concrete example to reinforce with Jack why we are so vigilant with his internet use. The sad side effect is that Jack lost some of his innocence, however, he has a better understanding now of the some of the dangers that unfortunately can lurk in our world and how quickly they can appear. The Government provides great resources to help parents within this area, it is as easy as Googling ‘parent cybersafety tips’. I encourage you to take a look and inform yourselves. A big thanks to Liz Jones, Kathryn Pepper and the whole staff for the wonderful job they did leading the school in my absence over the first two weeks of the term. It was reassuring to know that the school was in such capable hands whilst I was away. The staff have informed me that it has been a great start and we are all very excited about the prospect of moving into the first of our new learning spaces in a few weeks time. Have you got any questions about the school? Would you like some more information about the building program and other happenings at Trinity? TERM 3

WEEK 3

27th JULY

2016

Dear Parents,

Recently I had a first-hand experience of the dangers of the internet for children. The

scary part of this incident was how innocently it commenced and how quickly it escalated

and the threat appeared.

My son Jack had heard from a few of his friends at school about a free game that he could

download on his iPad called Tank Io. We looked it up together and it appeared more than

ok for a child of eight years old. Essentially it was shapes that were meant to be the

tanks undertaking a challenging course and trying to avoid each other.

I was sitting next to Jack when he as playing and keeping an eye on what he was up to.

After about two minutes of the game other names started appearing on the side of the

screen and it was obvious now that this game was linked on the net and he was playing

against people from all over the world. Within seconds he said to me; “Hey Dad, what

does stark naked mean?”

Straight away alarm bells rang and further investigation uncovered that ‘Stark Naked’ had

his own world in the game and he was inviting Jack to join. Immediately we shut the

game down and deleted the app.

Even with all of the Cybersafety, internet awareness, student safety etc. training that I

have done over the years this episode still stunned me. How quickly what appeared to be

a safe child’s game changed into a volatile area was unnerving. Upon reflection it stands

to reason that people with these disgusting ulterior motives would spend their time within

these children’s games as that is their preying ground.

I urge you to always be aware of your child’s internet use and talk to them about the

dangers that are out there within the cyber world. It was an opportunity for us to use this

concrete example to reinforce with Jack why we are so vigilant with his internet use. The

sad side effect is that Jack lost some of his innocence, however, he has a better

understanding now of the some of the dangers that unfortunately can lurk in our world

and how quickly they can appear. The Government provides great resources to help

parents within this area, it is as easy as Googling ‘parent cybersafety tips’. I encourage

you to take a look and inform yourselves.

A big thanks to Liz Jones, Kathryn Pepper and the whole staff for the wonderful job they

did leading the school in my absence over the first two weeks of the term. It was

reassuring to know that the school was in such capable hands whilst I was away. The

staff have informed me that it has been a great start and we are all very excited about the

prospect of moving into the first of our new learning spaces in a few weeks time.

Have you got any questions about the school? Would you like some more information

about the building program and other happenings at Trinity? Liz Jones and I invite you to

come along and share a coffee with us and have a chat on Thursday the 4th of August, at

8.45am in the new Library.

CHOICE THEORY

Meeting the needs of our students in the classroom

Children are the same as adults. If their basic needs are not met, they will not be

motivated to learn. Who cares about verbs when you are hungry? Who wants to do math games when you are lonely or scared? And how can you be expected to take ownership of

your learning if you are never allowed to make a decision?

William Glasser states that everything we do is an attempt to fulfill one or more of our basic needs.

At school, students feel pleasure and experience success when their basic needs are met and frustration

when they are not. At least half of today’s students do not commit themselves to learning if they find their

school experience boring, frustrating, or otherwise dissatisfying. This is often when misbehaviour occurs and

why it is essential for teachers to make school adequately interesting and satisfying to their students’ needs.

Teachers however cannot “make” students do anything; they can only influence them to do things that will

lead to better behaviour and increased success.

Glasser believes that motivation is the key ingredient in learning and that quality learning will be evident

when students become able to demonstrate/ explain how, why, and where their learnings are valuable.

One way teachers can ensure that quality learning is present is by ensuring that the 5 Basic Needs are met.

Survival needs are met when the school environment is kept safe and free from personal threat.

Students sense belonging when they receive attention from the teacher and others and participate

actively in class.

Students sense power when the teacher asks them to participate in making decisions about topics to

be explored and procedure for working in class or assigns them responsibility for class duties.

Students experience fun when they are able to work and talk with others, engage in interesting

activities and share their accomplishments.

Students sense freedom when the teacher allows them to make responsible choices concerning what

they will learn, how they will do so, and how they will demonstrate their accomplishments.

The staff at Trinity are committed to nurturing and educating 100% of the students 100% of the time. Their

collaborative planning ensures that the needs of all students are met in a warm and safe environment and

opportunities are provided for each student to take ownership of their learning. The students experience and

celebrate success at their own level and are encouraged to become life- long learners. This is what

education is ultimately all about.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Class Masses this term will be replaced with liturgies while Fr James is on leave.

We warmly invite all families to attend the liturgies which will be held at 9am each

Friday. Please refer to the front page of the newsletter for more details.

Fr John Readman’s 60th Anniversary of Ordination On Friday 22nd July the Social Justice Leaders (Dylan, Shanaya and Aimee) had the privilege of representing

Trinity at a special celebration for Fr John Readman at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish. Fr Readman was

the founding Parish Priest here in Narre Warren in 1979 and our School Hall is named in his honour. The

celebration acknowledged his amazing achievement of 60 years as a priest. Mass was co celebrated by Fr

Readman, Fr Brendan, Fr James and Deacon Peter. It was a lovely celebration and a memorable occasion for

all.

PARISH PRIEST’S CORNER

One of the great privileges of belonging to a parish community is the many and varied

celebrations that take place in the life of the parish. On Friday many in our community gathered to

praise God for the gift of Fr John Readman’s 60 years of priesthood. It was wonderful to see our

parish come together, children from our three primary schools, founding parishioners who started

the parish on February 16th 1981 and many parishioners who have joined us in the years since

February 1981.

Fr John remarked about how the many willing workers made life so vibrant in the early days of

OLHC parish. Thirty Five years has not dulled our spirit to give without counting the cost. On

Wednesday evening our master plan committee met with Law Architects. Our plans are coming to

completion and town planning signing off within the next week. It is an exciting time and one that

we praise God for that we are able to make these significant changes to our buildings.

In our Gospel this weekend Jesus urges his disciple to pray and to be persistent in prayer. We children of God often pray and wonder why our prayers are not answered perhaps our prayer needs to be for growth in trust of the slow work of God who is bringing about the kingdom through

our love of parish. Fr Brendan
