From the Principal

Two years ago I wrote an article about the Tour de France, and given it is the greatest race in the world, I thought it was about time to return to the sensational world of competitive cycling and the revered yellow jersey. Don’t worry, I’m not going to spend this time reminiscing about my own tales of trial and triumph, but I will speak about the 2019 Tour de France, a Frenchman named Julianne Alaphilippe and the power of expectation.

Over the three week race, the yellow jersey is awarded each day to the cyclist who is winning the race overall. It is the most recognisable symbol in world cycling and remains the epitome of success for many. It wasn’t completely unexpected when Alaphilippe won Stage 3 of the Tour and took the yellow jersey as the overall race leader. What was unexpected however, was how many days he would wear it, and how hard the race favourites would have to fight to get it off his back!

For 14 glorious days Alaphilippe wore yellow in a statement of utter defiance. Not being renowned for his mountain climbing or time trialling abilities, it was all but certain that the favourites would soon eat away at his lead once the race entered the individual time trial and the feared mountain stages. However, it wasn’t to be. With the yellow jersey on his back, Alaphilippe went on to win the individual time trial and extend his overall lead. He then entered the mountain stages where the race favourites couldn’t shake him. The French crowds roared as km by km Alaphilippe moved closer to wearing yellow at the final stage in Paris.

The Power of Yellow!

Page 3: Term 3 Week 4 Newsletter - Parkes Christian School · marked for the HSC within the next four or five weeks, and their hard work definitely . showed. There was an outstanding response

What was supposed to be one or two days in yellow turned into two weeks. Alaphilippe spoke openly about the lift he received from wearing yellow, but even greater than that was the weight of expectation he felt from the French crowds. They believed he could win, and he was determined not to let them down.

Researchers from a range of backgrounds have proven there is power in expectation. People respond to the expectations placed upon them. It is no different in education. Our students respond when the bar is set high, even if they don’t believe they are capable at first. High expectations is one thing, but having worked in a range of schools what I often find missing is the key element of encouragement and creating an atmosphere where students want to respond. We may not be a French crowd screaming at a cyclist riding up a mountain, but at PCS we are encouraging our students to achieve what even they don’t think they are sometimes capable of.

We have no greater example to follow than the life of Jesus. His expectations were high, but so was the level of support and encouragement. His followers knew they could talk with him when they messed up. They also knew they could count on him challenging them and cheering them on to achieve what he knew they were capable of. I was reminded of this at our Major Works Showcase last Monday evening. What a beautiful example it was to see student potential fulfilled through high expectations, hard work and plenty of encouragement. If you were to show the finished product to students right back at the beginning of the year, plenty would not think they were capable of such work.

Let’s ensure that we work together as a school community to keep our expectations high and cheer our students on as they achieve great things. As for Alaphilippe, with 2 Stages to go he eventually lost yellow on the toughest of mountain stages. He may not have won the Tour, but he will go down in history as a true example of what can be achieved through the power of expectation.

Have a great week.

Glen

HSC Works

Our 2019 HSC Showcase was another wonderful success and truly demonstrated the wide variety of talents that our senior students possess. A wide range of major works encompassing Design and Technology, Drama, Visual Arts, Music, Multimedia and Software Design and Development were on display throughout the evening.

Students have been working for months on these projects that will be submitted and marked for the HSC within the next four or five weeks, and their hard work definitely showed. There was an outstanding response to the evening with close to 200 people in attendance. Feedback forms were provided and the feedback given to the major works was overwhelmingly positive.

Congratulations to all the students who displayed their work, or performed on the evening, and a massive thank you to the staff, family and friends who provide so much support and guidance to the HSC students.

P&F

It may have been freezing cold on Friday night, but the 120 or so people who came along to the PCS P&F Bushdance were happily oblivious to the chilliness of the evening, keeping warm as they danced up a storm in the hall. We were so pleased to have had a number of people come to our dance from the wider community.

The evening started with the Heel and Toe Polka, and it was amazing to see around eighty people, from preschoolers to grandparents enjoying their time on the dance floor.

The Barn Dance, Strip the Willow, Hokey Pokey and Troika were among the dance offerings for the evening. A large group of dancers enjoyed dancing the Nutbush - it was quite a site. All participants should be congratulated on their efforts as they learned the complicated steps for the Waves of Bondi and had fun dancing The Drongo.

We were so blessed to have the very talented Kelly Gang Bush Band who provided the music. We would like to thank Pam Parkin, and the Kelly family, particularly Peter Kelly who called each dance and kept the evening flowing. You were amazing!

Prizes were awarded throughout the night for best dressed in a variety of age categories. It was great to see so many people had put a lot of effort into getting ready for the evening. Some people were also given little prizes for showing enthusiasm on the dance floor.

We would like to thank the people who served in the canteen on the evening, the hot food was particularly well received.

Upcoming Event

On Friday, 23 August, we are having a ‘Compassion Friday’ at Parkes Christian School. On the day there will be a chapel service, the opportunity to sponsor children, a bake sale and afternoon tea, as well as a pavement mural competition and a nail painting station.

Students are encouraged to add a splash of Compassion Blue to their regular school uniform - blue stockings, socks, hair ribbon or tie. Be imaginative with your splash of blue.

Parents and friends are encouraged to come along to our Chapel Service on Friday at 12pm to learn about the work of Compassion and the children we sponsor.

During lunch, students can buy hot chocolates and lots of baked treats! Parents are welcome to stay and enjoy the baked goods too - take-home trays will also be available for purchase.

If you have ever thought about sponsoring a child, or already do and can add another to your family, there will be an opportunity to do just that too.

Puffy Pups with KindergartenKindergarten had a wonderful time making these 3D dogs, or as they called them - Puffy Puppies!

They painted the dogs, using two different colours and when dry they were cut out and stapled together.

The kids stuffed their dogs with newspaper and the final staples were put in place.

Kindy are very proud of their Puffy Puppies!

A Message from Mrs Harris (Primary)Teamwork and good communication is essential in achieving goals. Here at PCS these skills are being cultivated everyday.

From daily group work activities in class, teamwork practises for the upcoming cricket or touch footy gala days, sharing the new sandpit equipment and creating the most amazing sand structures. Our students are learning to work productively together to attain their goals successfully.

Great job Primary students!

PCS is hosting a Book Fair in Week 5 this term. The fair will begin on Monday 26 August 2019 and conclude on Thursday 29 August 2019. All book orders need to be placed with Miss Barrass by 3pm on Friday 30 August 2019.

Students will be given an opportunity to look through the books in class with Miss Barrass, or at lunchtimes in the hall foyer. They will be able to create a wish-list of books they would like to purchase and take this home to show their parents. If students want to purchase books, they can bring their parent to the Hall Foyer at the end of the day to see Miss Barrass and place an order.

On Monday 26 August 2019, our school will be hosting a dress-up day to begin the Book Fair. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Please remember to bring a gold coin donation. The proceeds of this donation will go towards buying more books for our school Library.

If you have any questions, please call in and see Miss Barrass or phone the school office.

High School News

Mock Car Crash - Not a StatisticYear 10 students had the experience in witnessing the mock car crash demonstration that was held at Parkes High. This was an eye opening experience for our students in knowing the effects of what can happen whilst driving under the influence of alcohol and the lasting impacts of the devasting consequences of getting into a car with someone under the influence of alcohol / drugs.

A number of our Year 12 students volunteered their time to be involved in the event. Our talented youth actors Zak Chatman and Ali Himmetpasaoglu played the accompanying friends and portrayed their characters very well.

Thank you Parkes Shire Council, SES, Parkes Police, Ambulance Services and Parkes High for all their hard work in producing and hosting this workshop.

Compassion Bake SaleCalling all bakers. We are having a bake sale next Friday at recess and lunchtime. If you enjoy baking (or putting fruit on skewers!) please consider sending in some baking for our sale next Friday.

Please ensure all containers are labelled so we can return them, and that baking is nut-free. Thanks. Miss Harris
