News from the REC

The Our Father – the prayer Jesus taught us

Last week OLR was given a beautiful candle with the Aboriginal version of the Our Father on it. The Our Father is an important prayer for us

when we pray the Rosary.

You are our Father, You live in heaven, we talk to you, Father you are good

We believe your Word Father, we your children, give us bread today

We have done wrong, we are sorry, help us Father not to sin again

Others have done wrong to us and we are sorry for them Father today

Stop us from doing wrong, Father, save us all from the evil one

You are our Father, You live in heaven, we talk to you, Father you are good

We are continuing to pray the

Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary

after recess each Monday.

Last week we prayed the 3rd

Sorrowful Mystery, Jesus is

Crowned with Thorns.

This week we prayed the 4th

Sorrowful Mystery, The Carrying of

the Cross.

Next week we will be praying the 5th

Sorrowful Mystery, The Crucifixion.

Thank you to Year 2 and Year 6

children, and their teachers, for the

way they have reverently led liturgies

recently.

Both students spoke very well and were a credit to themselves and our school. Thanks also the teachers, who also came as characters from books to celebrate the day and a special thank you to our Librarians Mrs Mylan and Mrs Hannan for their encouragement and promotion of this important celebration. BULLYING AND EMPATHY SURVEY Our school was invited to participate in a bullying and empathy survey being conducted by the Macquarie University psychology research department. This was to involve children from Years 4&6 and it was to be conducted here at school last week, by staff from the university. We have been notified by the university that the participation of our school was not required, as they have gathered enough information for their research from other sample schools. We thank the parents who had given permission for their children to participate in this survey. WELLBEING WEEK Next week we are celebrating Wellbeing Week, with no homework for children and no staff meetings for teachers. Please take advantage of this extra time to spend with your families and appreciate being together and having some “down time” if that is what you need, or make the most of it and get out and about doing those things you wish you had the time for. BAND PERFORMANCE Last night we were treated to a wonderful performance by the children in our school band, un-der the leadership of music teacher and band leader Karen Williams. It was terrific to see the children working together to play music to entertain us and it was clear that the children thor-oughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you for sharing your musical talents with us and a most en-joyable evening!

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Thank you to everyone for joining in our Book

Week celebrations. The staff and students looked

amazing in their creative costumes!

Our Book Parade was a great way to celebrate a

love of reading. Thank you to the parents and friends who helped with costume preparations. It

was great to see so many people were able to come to see the children parade.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Don’t forget our Scholastic Book Fair will be open next Monday in the Library. The fair will close

on Thursday afternoon. If you can help before or after school on these days, please let us know

JD’S WORLD of MAGIC

The students and teachers loved JD’s World of Magic

show. Once again, Joel kept us entertained and

amused while inspiring students to read. We have had

requests for him to return again. No one was able to

figure out how the dove appeared in the hall….it must

be magic!

BOOK COVERING

Thank you to all the volunteers who have been covering our new Library Books, we really appre-

ciate your help. There will be lots more to cover after our Book Fair. Please see Mrs. Mylan or

Mrs. Hannan if you would like to take a bag of books to cover.

Happy Reading

Chaplaincy News

Material in the newsletter is not to be reproduced without the permission of the School Principal.

Several parents have been asking me about what is happening to the Chaplain’s services

next year. As some of you are aware the Federal Government funding for the Chaplaincy

Programme will no longer be funded from 2015. This means that the students and families

will not have access to the services provided by a Chaplain through federal funding after this

year.

OLR has had the services of a Chaplain as part of its culture since 2008. Many families,

students and staff have been able to access support from the Chaplain in various ways over

this time.

Currently, there is a Review process in place where some students, parents, staff and

parish personnel are being surveyed or interviewed. I am sure if any of you have a comment

to make in regard to the services offered by a Chaplain you could forward it by email or note

to the OLR Office.

ADDRESSING DISCRIMINATION AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL

Sometimes we are inadvertently developing bias or prejudice in our children when we make

off-hand remarks. Such as in the case when we are at a sporting event or commenting on

someone’s driving behaviour or watching something on the television etc. Negative

commentary, often cloaked in humour, using sexual or racial references derogatorily is

offensive as well as discriminatory.

We should be very careful as parents and educators that it is not part of our repertoire or

humour. It forms our children’s values and attitudes. This is an issue we are trying to address

with our Years 4, 5 and 6 boys particularly.

If we work together we can make a difference to make our school a respectful and safe place

for all.

Many blessings,

Kay Taylor (Chaplain)

OLR Parents & Friends News

Material in the newsletter is not to be reproduced without the permission of the School Principal.

On Thursday, 4th September, between 9:00 and 11:00 am we will be

holding our school Father’s Day Stall in the school hall. Children are

asked to bring $5 each to buy a present for their father or carer.

All gifts are bundled to the value of $5 each. We understand that many families are mixed or extended; however, we

ask that each child only buy one present. After each child has

purchased a gift we will then allow children to purchase a second gift if

more are available. Please understand that we try very hard to accommodate everyone,

unfortunately we can only estimate how many gifts are required and we may run out if there are a

lot of children buying second gifts.

Wrapping! Did I hear you say you love wrapping?

Well; have we got great news for you…. We have 480 gifts for fathers and carers that

we will be wrapping on Thursday, 21st August in the VSR at 9AM. If you could spare

a little of your time, it would be greatly appreciated. It is said that “many hands make light work” and this is one of those occasions when it is definitely true.

We will supply the tea, gourmet pod coffee and yummy treats (not forgetting the fabulous company)

all you have to do is turn up. We would love to see you there.

Are you free on Thursday, 4th September? As much as we love being able to provide this service so that your children can

spoil their dad on Father’s Day, we also need a little help with the stall as well.

If you are available to help run the stall, we would greatly appreciate it.

No experience necessary! We look forward to seeing you.

Thank you for your continued support. The OLR Parents and Friends Association

STALL

On behalf of the Parents and Friends Association at Our Lady of the Rosary,

we would like to say a big thank you to all the parents, friends and carers

that were able to attend our Term 3 meeting. The minutes have now been

typed up and sent out to all school families to let you know what was discussed and events in the

near future.

As a part of our Busy Bee activities, we will be cleaning the books in the school

library every Monday at 9:00am until they have all been freshened up. If you are

available to lend a helping hand; please pop in, the more the merrier. We often

have coffee and muffins on hand.

We have many families happily enjoying their discount vouchers from the

Entertainment Books sent home last term. If you have received a reminder notice

and have already returned your book or you have simply misplaced the book; please

send a note in with your eldest OLR child’s first name and class and we will let the

Entertainment Book people know. If you are yet to purchase or return your book; please do so

at your earliest convenience.

Our fundraising activity for Term 3 is the school walk-a-thon. Weather permit-

ting; it has been scheduled for Wednesday, 17th September (Week10). Further

details and sponsorship forms will be sent out very shortly as will a request for

volunteers to walk with a class group, man drink stations and supervise road

crossings.
