Parents are very welcome to attend and we ask that you please RSVP to the school office if you intend coming along. School Dance groups Congratulations again to our two special dance groups who competed in another eisteddfod last Sunday at St Ignatius College. It was undoubtedly one of the worst days of weather ever experienced, so special thanks to Miss Tahlia, teachers Ms Richards and Ms Higgs and all the parents who braved the conditions to get there and back. Once again the Junior group won first place in their section! Congratulations to Dance instructor Miss Tahlia, liaison parents Deneille and Jasmine and all parents for your great support. University of NSW Competitions Next week will be the Writing (Tuesday) and Spelling (Wednesday) competitions. All students who are sitting the tests can access the website www.eaa.unsw.edu.au for practice questions. I always give the students a note reminding them of the date and time and advertising the above web address. Good luck boys and girls. Year 3 and 4 Drama Performance - Wed 22 June at 2pm On Wednesday 22 June all parents are invited to attend the Year 3 and 4 Drama performance in the hall at 2pm. The students have been working this semester with our Drama teacher Ms MacPherson on Safari, an exciting musical with important environmental messages. Hope to see you there. Car Park Safety You will have noticed our new safety fence in the car park area and the new safety bollards being installed. Currently parents are only allowed to use the car park before 7.30am and after 5.30pm, usually just for OOSH drop offs and pick-ups. This has been the case for many years and is clearly indicated on the signs on the school gate, and has been conveyed in the newsletter. It is rather frustrating when some parents continue to fiercely debate this matter with staff when using the car park at peak busy times. As we have frequently discussed at P&C meetings, we are only concerned with student and community safety, and the majority of schools do not allow any parents to use school car parks at any time. Next week members of the new amalgamated council traffic team are visiting our school to talk with myself, executive and our P&C president in regard to further safety measures in and around Wheeler Heights. Please arrive a few minutes earlier, park across the road, have a walk and don’t compromise the safety of our children. LMBR Our school, and all schools in NSW, will be migrating to a new financial system called LMBR (Learning Management Business Reform) on 5 September this year. Our SAM (School Administration Manager) Jodie Sly, SAO (School Administration Officer) Wendy Clifford and I will be undertaking many days of training in order to implement the new system. We ask that you please pay outstanding fees by mid-August, so as to avoid re-invoicing with the new system. Parent Online Payments (POP) will be available from July, this is a new option to make payments for parents easier, this will replace our current option of direct credit to our school bank account. More information regarding POP and changes that will affect you will be included in future newsletters under the heading ‘From the Office’. Kindergarten 2017 Enrolments School tours are on each month, the next one is on Thursday 23 June at 9.45am. We hope to have four Kindergarten classes in 2017 and would love enrolment forms to be sent in as soon as possible, especially if you have a sibling for next year!! Triple P Parenting Program… Coming to Wheeler Heights in Term 3!!

Wheeler Heights Public School is delighted to be able to offer to our community the opportunity to attend the Triple P Parenting Program. It is a free program which will be run over three evening sessions next term on Wednesday 10 August, Wednesday 17 August and Wednesday 24 August (Weeks 4,5 &6). Places are limited and require booking on 8425 8700. Please see the flyer in the newsletter for details. Triple P (Positive Parenting program) course focus: The course focuses on building positive relationships between parents and children. Description The Triple P positive parenting program is an international system with proven parenting solutions for parents. It is a system of easy to use, proven parenting strategies for parents to develop a positive and caring relationship with their child. It provides principles and techniques that can be used for different problems, such as tantrums, sleeping, bullying, and withdrawal. It has been running for 30 years and works well. Triple P Seminars address general parenting issues: why children tend to behave in certain ways under certain influences, and what they best respond to; dealing decisively and effectively with behaviours such as aggression and non-cooperation; recognising and managing situations that might be much less obvious such as sadness, anxiety, difficulty with separation and problems mixing with other children. Liz Armstrong Deputy Principal (Wed, Thurs, Fri)

YEAR 5 VISIT TO IMAX SYDNEY

Next term, Year 5 will be studying ‘Earth’s place in Space’ during science lessons. To support this learning we went on an excursion to the IMAX Theatre on Wednesday 8 June. We excitedly boarded the bendy bus before school started and headed for the city. We arrived at Darling Harbour and watched the first of our two space documentaries. It was called HUBBLE 3D. During this film, the students accompanied the space walking astronauts as they attempted some of the most difficult tasks ever undertaken in NASA's history, and experienced up close the awesome power of the launches, the heartbreaking setbacks, and the dramatic rescues of this most powerful story.

We then had lunch in the beautiful sun before heading back into the theatre for the second documentary – HIDDEN UNIVERSE 3D. On this adventure students were taken on an extraordinary journey deep into space. The deepest reaches of our universe were brought to life with unprecedented clarity through real images captured by the world’s most powerful telescopes. Both films were truly incredible and made us all realise how very small we actually are and how very precious our home, the Earth, is. We’d like to thank Karen, Susie, Helen and Ramona for volunteering to join us for the day. A special mention has to go to Ramona for entertaining us with her super fun games. Mr Webster and I were very proud of the children and their behaviour during the day. They were terrific representatives of our school. Well done Year 5!

ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards Nominate your favourite inspirational teacher now! The ASG is calling for nominations by 31 July 2016.

asg.com.au/nominate (Let Mr Scotter or the P&C President know about your intention, so that we coordinate multiple nominations!) Receiving an award for the effort put into teaching is not only energizing for the teacher. Parents and children themselves find it very rewarding to reflect on why their favourite teacher makes a difference to one’s daily learning, and to record the reasons. Putting forward a nomination is just a little token of recognition to our WHPS teachers. Our teachers deserve it

27 May 2016 Wheeler Heights Public School RE : OPAL CARD

Condition of use – Student Opal Card I write to request your assistance in promoting an important message regarding the Student Opal Card through your internal channels. It is a condition of use that students tap on and tap off at the start and at the end of each trip with their Student Opal Card. This is important to ensure correct patronage data is recorded, which is used to plan school special and regular route bus services. This data helps State Transit ensure adequate capacity is provided, so students can travel to and from school safely. Currently, many students are failing to tap on or off the Opal readers when using their Student Opal Card. To assist with future service planning, can you please advise students of this important condition of use so State Transit can continue to provide effective school bus services in the future. Thank you for your assistance. Yours sincerely W Mitford Wade Mitford Traffic & Services Manager
