Term 2 Week 4 24 May 2018
perfect running conditions for our students who enjoyed their run through the bushland of Willans Hill. Thank you to our parent helpers for cooking the sausages and for sharing in our family friendly event. Congratulations to all the students for having a go and for exhibiting outstanding behaviour. A big round of applause must also go to Miss Brasier who organised such a fun-filled day.
SRC Crazy Hair Day There was something in the air or should I say in the students’ hair on Tuesday! So many weird and wacky hairstyles filled our classrooms in support for our SRC vegetable garden fundraiser. The money raised will go towards purchasing seeds, garden equipment and mulch. We look forward to eating some of the school grown produce soon! Well done Mrs Mott and Mrs Comerford for organising this crazy day!
P & C’s Generous Donation First of all, thank you to all the parents and community members who attended our monthly P&C meeting. It was lovely to catch up with some familiar faces and to hear the great ideas and views of our P&C body. At this meeting, our wonderful P&C made a generous contribution towards financing various initiatives and curricular programs. The P&C kindly donated $6750. These funds will go towards purchasing Literacy and Numeracy resource kits for each of our Kindergarten classes, 3 new EV MindStorm Robotics kits which will allow Stage 2 students to learn more about software and programming, and lots of fun play equipment for the new outdoor area in the Infants block. All parents and community members are welcome to attend our next meeting which is on 19th July. It is a wonderful chance to have your say and to discuss possible fundraising events. School Band Camp Last weekend we had a huge number of students participate in the Band Camp. I would like to say a huge thank you to Linda Wood, Melissa Halloran and the Band Committee along with Lea Ingram and the Riverina Conservatorium of Music who worked tirelessly to ensure this camp was not only educational but a rewarding and memorable one.
Cross Country On Monday, our annual cross country was held at the Botanic Gardens. The cooler autumn weather was
LOST PROPERTY There is a large amount of lost property waiting to be collected. Any items not collected by the end of May will be donated to either the Second Hand Uniform shop, or to charity.
National Simultanious Storytime Now in its 18th successful year, National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, bookshops and many other places around the country. The NSS 2018's book is Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. This entertaining event includes all the teachers dressing up and acting out the storyline. This in itself, is always a highlight, as many of the students told us…we all need to keep our day jobs!
S3 Netball Knockout Today our Stage 3 netballers take on Lake Albert Public School in the first round of the PSSA Netball Knockout. Good luck girls and let’s hope you learn some new skills and maybe even come away with a win! Thank you Miss Rose for taking these students on this excursion. NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills. Last week, students in Years 3 and 5 participated in the annual tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. I would like to congratulate all students for their positiveness, resilience and determination to do their best. Even though this is only a ‘shapshot’ of their learning, the NAPLAN provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students
are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Attendance/Partial absences Following an absence from school, please ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s teacher with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. At Sturt, we remain committed to working in partnership with you to address the issues which are preventing your child’s full participation at school. It is important to understand that the Department of Education and Communities may be required to take further action where children have recurring numbers of unexplained or unjustified absences from school. Working collaboratively with our students and families is the best way to support regular attendance and to provide our students with the best educational opportunities. The week ahead Next week is proving to be another fun-filled, exciting week of learning with Stage 3 leaders and students participating in numerous excursions and events including GRIP Leadership workshop, Mortimer Shield, Rotary Public Speaking competition and the Riverina Dance Festival in Albury. We also have Early Stage 1 travelling on a bus to a local farm for their annual History excursion and our very special Reconciliation Morning Tea on 31 May at 11am to welcome all our beautiful Indigenous families and friends into our school community. With so many fantastic learning opportunities being offered, please ensure your child’s permission notes and money are handed in on, or before, the due date indicated on the note, as late entries will not be accepted. Families can also stay up-to-date with changes of school routines or keep informed with events courtesy of our school app. Please speak to our friendly office staff Ange, Fiona and Mel for assistance.
