Associate Principal’s Message

Dear Students and Parents/Caregivers of Willandra It’s been wonderful to see so many of our students’ happy, smiling faces!

Everyone is settling back into school beautifully.

Thank you to the parents who are following our pick-up and drop-off strategies with patience and

kindness towards others. It’s lovely that our community has pulled together during these

challenging times. Thanks too, to the parents and caregivers who are following the Government

directive to not enter our school site at the moment.

If your child(ren) are continuing to learn at home with paper work packages, please remember

to drop off Week 2’s packages and pick up Week 3’s packages on Monday 11th May, 8.30-

9.30am via the Drive-through. If you are supporting your child’s learning at home via Connect

Bird Rescue at Willandra PS

“I was walking to school with my friend on the oval. Near a wooden pole I looked down and I saw a bird. Everyone near me thought it was dead until I saw its eye blink so I picked it up because it kept trying to fly away but it couldn't stand up. So I brought it to my teacher, Ms Kraima and she put it in a box and shut the lid to stop it stressing out. While I was at French, Ms Kraima took it to a Native Vet at Darling Range Wildlife Shelter.

The next day it’s leg was fine so the native vet people came back to school to release it. They got the whole class together to watch and as soon as I lifted the lid it shot off so fast and far that Mrs Cornell couldn't get it on camera! The bird is now happy back in his tree”.

Chase S, TA 20

Home Learning

We are moving through extraordinary and challenging times right now. This reference

sheet is to set your mind at ease in regards to your child’s learning. Our partnership with

you is the key to maintaining continuity for your child’s learning. Through keeping positive

relationships and regular connection with you, we can do what we do best; support you

and your child’s learning, allowing you to do what you do best-being a parent and a

family.

First and foremost, you are the best people positioned to know what is happening at

home and where everyone is at emotionally and practically. Home learning involves

some structure, time for learning and time for play. We all have a role in this.

Communication with classroom teachers. This includes a combination of email

through Connect or pre-booked phone calls through the Office 9391 4300 or via SMS

0448 793 568.

Communication with the Principal and Associate Principals via phone or email.

First, take care of your family’s health and wellbeing as well as your own.

Home learning is NOT about turning home into school or parents into teachers.

We are here to support you with your child’s learning.

Term 2 Week 2 2020 WILLANDRA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Here’s a challenge for you. Try to think back a month or two, to a time when you may have found

yourself finding life a bit ‘humdrum’ and predictable. You may have felt bogged down or bored

with the everyday routine of your life - my how things change!

Life has changed so much and so quickly in the last few months, and it seems to continue to

change on a regular basis. Isn’t it ironic how quickly we can shift from wanting to escape the

‘dullness’ of routine, to desiring just a little ‘known-ness’ about what will come next. As ‘creatures of

habit’, change is not the easiest thing for us to deal with.

Please be encouraged that this ‘storm’ of CoVid–19 will pass. If we support each other to ‘bunker

down’ and patiently wait for this storm to pass, then together we will see the other side. Who knows

what that will look like, but I assure you there will be more routineness afterwards than there is in the

midst. Hang in there. We will weather this storm, together!

Health Information

Students who are unwell Any student who is unwell must be kept at home. Complications with COVID 19 are a real cause

for concern and we need to keep the school as safe as possible. For the latest health information and health related enquiries

please visit WA Department of Health or access the helpline 1800 020 080

Hygiene Practices

How to minimize the spread of COVID-19;

Frequently washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or using

an alcohol based hand gel

Refraining from touching mouth, nose and eyes

If coughing or sneezing, covering your nose and mouth with a paper tissue or flexed

elbow

Dispose of the tissue immediately after use and perform hand hygiene

Avoiding close contact with anyone if you, or they, have a cold or flu-like symptoms

(maintain a distance of at least 1.5 metres).

Let’s Keep the Calm Many students are really anxious over the world news and events surrounding COVID-19.

The Australian Psychological Society Limited PO Box 38, Flinders Lane, VIC, 8009

Keeping a common sense and calm approach to the panic mode surrounding us will help

alleviate the stress for children.

Speaking to them about coronavirus in a calm manner

Asking them what they already know about the virus so you can clarify any

misunderstandings they may have

Letting them know that it is normal to experience some anxiety when new and stressful

situations arise

Giving them a sense of control by explaining what they can do to stay safe (e.g., wash their

hands regularly, stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing)

Not overwhelming them with unnecessary information (e.g; death rates) as this can increase

their anxiety

Reassure them that coronavirus is less common and severe in children compared to adults

allowing regular contact (e.g., by phone) with people they may worry about, such as

grandparents, to reassure them that they are okay.

Limit media exposure - be with them when they are listening and watching the news.
