Term 2 Newsletter 18/8 7 June 2018 Phone/Absence Line/Fax 04 902 5596 [email protected] Dear Parents and Guardians A REMINDER We would be grateful if you could again check to see that they have an appropriate coat and suitable footwear that can be used outside even if the weather is not the best. Our school uniform does have both a plain sweatshirt and a polar fleece. Students are also able to wear polyprop leggings or tops (navy only) as well. We do ask for your cooperation especially in this area as we have noticed a number of students coming to school with bright blue or pink leggings. TEACHERS PAID UNION MEETING (This notification will also be sent out as a hard copy) The NZEI has scheduled a Paid Union Meeting for all teachers in the Kapiti area on Wednesday 27 th June from 1.30pm. NZEI uses the entitlement infrequently in the school sector and only where there is a need for maximum membership attendance at meetings. Generally they are used either to enable members to vote on the proposed claims for the negotiation of their collective agreement or, as in this case, to consider whether the proposed terms of settlement are acceptable and, if not, to allow members to determine what action they are prepared to take to secure a fair settlement. Kapiti schools have the option of finishing early on this day; we have decided that we will remain open for those parents who require cover for their children and are not able to pick their child up at lunchtime. We are aware that finishing early can cause disruption for you as a parent and by having some staff volunteers to provide cover we hope to minimise the impact on you. A small number of staff have elected to stay behind and not attend the meeting in order to ensure that any child who is not picked up can continue to be at school. You are able to pick your child from 12.45pm. Please sign them out with your child’s class teacher or at the school office (if you are intending to pick up earlier than 12.45pm.) It is extremely important that you do either of these, as we do attendance checks in the afternoon and ringing parents who have taken their child home without informing either the teacher or the office can be time consuming. Thank you for your support.

WORK PROJECTS The deck out the front of the school is now complete, there is still some work to be done installing a new shade sail and seating, this will take place later. The work focus now switches to the area by Room 4 and the hall. Please be careful.

WHANAU HUI The school has held its first whanau hui for the year, and it's fair to say we all walked away buzzing. With the tamariki watching a movie, the vibe was relaxed and positive, a great chance for our community to hear and be heard on a wide range of topics, from the current teaching of Reo and pronunciation, to the progress on our Raumati E haka - and a school "anthem"! For more details, see the minutes on the school Whanau page. Next meeting is Term 3, Wednesday 1st August. Once again, all are welcome.

THANK YOU FROM THE LIBRARY A big thank you to the Le Quesne family for their recent generous donation to purchase specialist library books for our dyslexic/reluctant readers.

POLAR FLEECES Please remember to name your child’s polar fleece clearly so we can return lost fleeces to class. Many thanks.

WHAKAARO HOU TRUST CHROMEBOOK ROLLOUT The next Chromebook roll out date is Wednesday 13th June. The closing date for Expression of Interest forms is Friday 8th June 2018. For more information or to download an Expression of Interest Form, please see the Trust Website: www.weeblytrust.com or contact Leigh at [email protected].

SCOOTER SAFETY Please remind your child that is important to lock their scooter/bike during the day. If your child chooses to use their scooter during morning tea or lunch time at school, it is recommended in the interests of safety that they wear a helmet.

CHINESE SWEET DUMPLINGS Last week Room 26 learned how to make Chinese sweet dumplings. Each student rolled a ball of dough flat and then put a little marshmallow inside before rolling in up into a ball again. They were then boiled in a sweet soup and returned to them in class to try. Mengwei did all the preparation and cooking and also made black sesame filling ones (closer to the ones you get in China). The children all tried them and asked each other in Mandarin, "Do you like sweet dumplings?" and then replied in Mandarin.

TEAM KAPITI SCIENCE FAIR 2018

This year, the Raumati Beach School Science Fair was beyond expectations. There were a huge range of different subjects. The boards were bursting with information and the creativity put into the work was just ecstatic. When they were put up last week, students from all around the school came to look at the spectacular presentations. The judges were seniors from Kapiti College. They arrived on Wednesday the next week, and were delighted at the wide range of questions, and the amazing facts they all held. But sadly the judges couldn’t choose everyone’s board. The creators of the 20 fabulous boards are very excited to be going to the regional Science Fair at Kapiti School next week. Congratulations to all of the students who worked so hard. The Team Kapiti science fair was a huge success! By Charli Pollard Simmiss and Ashley Polglase The following are projects selected by panel of judges (from RBS and Kapiti College) to go through to the regional science fair at Kapiti School:

GORGEOUS AND GLAMOROUS! Each December, our Year 8 students are invited to attend our end-of-year dance, celebrating their final year at primary school. It's a time for everyone to sparkle and shine, be handsome and gorgeous! We are starting a FREE dress hire for our students to help them be fabulously (but inexpensively) attired for their special night. If you have any dresses, jewellery, shoes, dress shirts or pants that you would like to donate, we would be very grateful. Please drop the items to the School Office, or to Wendy in room 15. Thank you so much for all donations received so far! If you have any queries, you can contact Amanda Nevin ([email protected], 021 799742) or Wendy Keating ([email protected]).

CROSS COUNTRY 2018 On Tuesday 5th June, Raumati Beach took 117 athletes to the Interschool’s Cross Country at Waikanae Park. The weather held off, and it was actually perfect conditions for running the course. It was the first time that Year 3’s have been able to enter, and we took a talented group with us to run the 1km track with the Year 4’s. The Year 5’s and 6’s ran twice around the track and the Year 7 and 8’s ran around three times (3km). All of the students should be proud of their achievement and behaviour. We had some great results, and the following students were ranked in the top 10 and will be racing in the Regional Cross Country later in the year.

Year 8 Kāpiti College Dyslexia Open Evening: Monday 18th June

We would like to invite parents, children and carers to an open evening focusing on the needs of neurodiverse learners. This includes all students hoping to come to Kāpiti College next year who have, or are suspected to have, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia.

This meeting will outline our Neurodiversity Program which has gained nationwide recognition for its success over the last 10 years. We will explain how your child’s needs will be met within this program and our whole school philosophy around meeting the needs of neurodiverse learners. We will also outline how our neurodiverse classes operate at years 9, 10 and 11.

This Meeting will be led by Sarah Sharpe, our Teacher in Charge of Neurodiversity Education. It will provide you with an opportunity to meet others and for any questions you may have to be answered by our staff.

We are a Level III School as recognised by the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand.

Light refreshments will be served.

When: Monday 18th June. 7 p.m - 8 p.m.

Where: C Block, Classroom C5, Kāpiti College
