Open Night My thanks to all who were involved in the Open Night. The Open Night was a real success. It has got parents speaking about the opportunities available at Hallam Senior College. Many of the parents I spoke to were surprised about the type and variety of units on offer. The night was really important especially the many parents who came from the Year 7 – 9 schools. The most important outcome of the night was highlighting to the parents what a Hallam College education will provide in comparison to other schools. The feedback I received from the many families present was very positive. The displays were well received and the staff really positive in “selling “the college. Our College leaders – Christina and Charleze – spoke so well and provided a real insight into why they are proud of their school. Thank you to all involved. Also during the week, the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) met at the college as part of their rotations of meetings. The evening meeting allowed us to show the 45 participants around the Trade Training Centre and then link them to the partnership team. The night focussed on the type of work available for apprentices and trainees in the South East area of Melbourne. Also discussed was the possibility of the school becoming an associate in developing short courses.

FeedbackWe welcome feedback from students, families and members of the community. This information allows us to see where our strengths lie and also the areas in which we should seek to improve. Please email Business Manager, Jason Patten at: [email protected] or call 9703 1266.

Centre of Excellence: Aviation Technology News!Hallam Senior College is excited to announce that it is the first Secondary College in Australia to become a member of Aviation/Aerospace Australia. Aviation/Aerospace Australia is a national association for the Australian Aviation and Aerospace industries. Its overarching objective is to contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of Australia’s aviation and aerospace sector. What does this mean for Hallam Senior College? While our college has been offering various aviation related electives in previous years, this year saw the launch of our Centre of Excellence: Aviation Technology Program. Students now have a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in project-based learning to build their STEM skills and knowledge in the context of existing and developing technologies in aviation and aerospace. Aviation/Aerospace Australia will provide the essential link for our students to be able to connect with aviation and aerospace industry leaders, access micro-credential courses in Aviation, visit a wide range of aviation businesses and facilities, participate in industry programs and events and access unique and exciting opportunities to explore the aviation and aerospace industry in a way that would otherwise not be possible. Hallam Senior College is very privileged to have this strong connection with Aviation/ Aerospace Australia and together we look forward to inspiring many of our young people to pursue careers in this vibrant, growing and exciting industry that is Aviation and Aerospace.

Introducing our inaugural Innovation Centre of Excellence (Aviation Technology) students. This photo has been a long time coming due to a busy project schedule in Aviation Technology but it gives us great pleasure to introduce our very conscientious group of students learning about existing and emerging technology used in flying machines.

Kitchen GardenYear 10 students in the Kitchen Garden MAX programme putting their mini greenhouses together. Here are some seedlings that were successfully grown in the previous group's mini greenhouses.

Advocacy Model Parents and Guardians will soon receive a message from a Staff Advocate. This is the staff member who has been identified to work closely with your students as an important point of contact.Via email/Compass post, the Advocate will introduce themselves and provide a contact point for you and your student, to allay any concerns and provide a pathway in resolving issues. The Advocate is the person who will support the student and check in on their progress.Their role is not to solve all problems, but they will be able to access those who can assist if required. They are not the disciplinarian or student manager nor the wellbeing officer. Rather they are the voice of the student and by extension the parent/ guardian if support is needed. Each Advocate will check in with students on a regular basis.

CBD WorkshopsThe Year 11 and 12 VET Health Services and Community Services students attended workshops in the CBD last week covering topics such as homelessness, stereotyping and empathy. Some were even privileged enough to meet 'neighbours' and hear their personal stories, realising that life is a series of intersections and no one journey is the same.

AFL GirlsOur AFL Girls played round 2 of the Premier League against Sunbury at Hallam FC. A great first half of footy enabled the team to dictate terms in the second half and run away convincing winners. Final scores were Hallam 11-12-78 v Sunbury 1-4-10. Round 3 will be against Horsham in 2 weeks time.

Year 10 Sports Leadership: Nutrition and Cooking Session

As part of their major unit of study on Nutrition, Mr Peresso’s Year 10 Sports Leadership class participated in a cooking class conducted by Ms Haughey. The students worked in small groups to prepare a nutritious snack – one aimed as a pre-competition fuel and the other high in protein, which is essential for recovery. The class were able to prepare and cook their snacks in the 50-minute window that was allocated for the session. This included washing up and tasting the final product of course. Big thanks to Ms Haughey for her time and expertise to enable this session to run.
