[email protected] Message from the Principal Thank you to everyone who contributed to the SkoolBag App survey over the past fortnight. Unfortunately, the response was quite alarming with only 35 families participating. This is approx. 1/3 of our school community. The SkoolBag App is our most effective means of communication between school and home. It allows us to get important reminders and information to you in a timely manner. If you do not have it downloaded on your phone, please make it a priority. If you have it downloaded but you are not receiving the notifications, please check your settings and/or clear previous unread messages. We value your input and positive contribution to our school community and it would be great to improve and enhance these lines of communication. In addition to this, we would like to invite you to attend one (or more) of our upcoming PRI (positive, remove, improve) sessions. These casual sessions are provided as an opportunity for you to openly and honestly discuss programs, procedures and practices at our school that you feel; are positive (& should be celebrated), should be removed (because it is unsuccessful) &/or could be improved (to enhance our school and student performance). Please see the calendar below for dates and times. More information will be sent home on Thurs 28/3 but we hope you can make it and look forward to hearing your ideas/opinions. This week you will receive a ScopeIT note and you may notice some changes from previous years. In 2019, ScopeIT sessions will be conducted in Terms 2 & 3 only to trial a new and improved 20 week technology program being launched by the company. ScopeIT has also been made a registered provider for the NSW Government ‘Creative Kids’ program. This means that your child’s entire ScopeIT fees ($100) can be paid using the government funding initiative. Information to apply for and utilise this funding is provided with the permission note. For those of you who do not wish to use the ‘Creati ve Kids’ funding, Cathy Baker, from Belle Property Kil lcare, has contributed a generous financial donation to supplement this program, so that the total cost is $75 per student (instead of $100). Full payment is due by Friday 12 April 2019 (last day of Term 1). We acknowledge that the students of PBPS absolutely love this program and the skills, knowledge and understanding of future-focused ICT is essential to prepare them for future learning and life. We look forward to seeing what the kids can do with this new, improved program. Please consult the calendar below for upcoming events and reminders. We look forward to your ongoing support and participation throughout the term. What’s Happening at PBPS? Changes to 2019 Athletics Procedures This year, a NSWPSSA Athletics Selection Trial will be held on Thursday 8 August, Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Students wishing to attend must be approved and nominated by their school. The Sydney North Athletics Championships will still be the pathway to the Sydney North team to compete at the NSWPSSA Championship in November. However, the difference this year is that the School Sport Australia Championship will not take place after the NSWPSSA Championship, due to it being held in Darwin at the end of Term 3. This trial is purely to select the NSWPSSA Athletics team to compete at the 2019 School Sport Australia Championship. If you feel that your child would qualify for the National Athletics Championship, please contact the school ASAP. Nominations for these trials close on 26

June. PLEASE NOTE: Students will still be able to compete at School (PBPS), Zone (SCCPSSA), Regional (Syd Nth) & State (NSW) Athletics Carnivals as usual.

Swimming Carnival Award Presentation Our school swimming carnival was a big success on 26

February at Woy Woy Peninsula Centre. Well done to all of our students who attended and participated in the carnival. The feedback from spectators, public pool users and pool staff were all very positive and appreciated the great atmosphere of our PBPS carnival. We had 24 students qualify for the Zone SCCPSSA swimming carnival, many of whom were competing in multiple events. Thank you to Mr Podmore for another well-organised and enjoyable event, to the staff for their

flexibility and willingness to be ‘thrown in the deep end’ on various official duties and to all the parents who came to support our students on the day.

SCCPSSA ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all of our school representatives who attended the SCCPSSA Zone Swimming Carnival at The Peninsula Leisure Centre on Tuesday 12th March. The behaviour, skill and sportsmanship displayed on the day was superb! Thank you to all of our families who attended, providing transportation and support on the day! Well done to Alex, Martin and Sari who have qualified for the Sydney North Swimming Carnival on Thursday 28 March. Special mention to Alex who was also named 11yr Boys Champion for the entire carnival. An achievement that both Alex and the rest of PBPS should be very proud of!

Students may be exempt from the NAPLAN tests if they: - are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or - have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer after consultation with the school principal. To withdraw your child from NAPLAN, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided (rest breaks, extra time, NAPLAN support person, oral/sign support). Large print, braille, coloured paper versions, scribe (writing only), assistive technology and electronic tests are also available to meet the needs of individual students. Access to adjustments must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please call or email the school to make an appointment ASAP if you need to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN. Winter Uniform Order forms for the winter jackets will be due back at school Friday 22/3/2019. These are a one off annual order. Also if you want to order Girls Winter Tunics and/or White long sleeved blouses please order at the office before 8 April. Harmony Day 2019 On Thursday the 21 March 2019 our school celebrated Harmony Day. This was a great day of demonstrating our strong school spirit and celebrating our diversity, affirming the Harmony Day core message ‘everyone belongs’. It was wonderful to see the students dressed in orange to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. We had a fantastic assembly under the cola, learning a little more about Harmony Day and listening to our school choir sing. It was great to have the Pretty Beach Preschool join us and sing for us also. Ms Bulman and Mrs Hutchens Organising Teachers

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Today in Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden we did

some knife skills. But the rain stopped us from going

outside sadly. We still did some

gardening though. We made some

pots out of newspaper that we put

soil in and after the soil we put

seeds in the soil to see them grow.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Last Friday we had our PBL rewards day. All students enjoyed their well-earned rewards including sports sessions, sitting next to a friend for the day, bringing in a soft toy or a class exchange. It was lots of fun for all students who traded to share in some fun reward time with their peers. We are all looking forward to our next reward day, which will be on the last day of term, Friday, 12th April 2019. Trade day will be one week prior. This fortnight we have also been revising our rules for using technology and classroom resources, rules on the oval; in classroom wet areas and concreate areas. Some questions to discuss with your child to revise these rules could include:

Why is it important to follow the rules of the

game?

How do we look after equipment and why?

Why should we use our time wisely?

In the wet area, how can using our time wisely

and help the environment?

During group work, how can we be respectful to

our peers in the group?

Aboriginal Activities Every Friday during second half lunch students are welcome to participate in Aboriginal activities in the Yr 1 / 2 Red classroom. Students have been listening to Dreamtime stories and exploring different mediums to

recreate animals from the stories that they are listening to. Students have enjoyed making clay echidnas, carving kangaroos and painting emus and other Australia native wildlife, as well as painting the Aboriginal Flag. All students are welcome to attend. Ms Bulman

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

The Ministry of Health is preparing a public information campaign about the dangers of Whooping Cough (pertussis), which has been increasing in incidence across NSW in 2018 and is expected to continue to increase in 2019. The Ministry has asked the Department of Education to support the campaign by sending information to primary and secondary schools. Information from the Ministry of Health about Whooping Cough is provided below.

You may wish to include this information to parents and carers through your school’s usual communication channels, for example a newsletter or P&C meetings.

Keep coughing kids home and see your GP.

Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019.

School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies.

What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members

2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough 3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading

the infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough

For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx)

You can also find out about other important infectious disease alerts by visiting the alerts page(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/alerts/Pages/default.aspx).
