Welcome to our first week back at school. By the end of this week 30 new students and their families will have enrolled at Malfroy School. We have planned a special welcome for new students and their parents/caregivers next Friday 8 February at our school assembly starting at 1.45pm. Everyone has been ready to learn. Thank you to parents and caregivers for having students ready for the first week of school. Students were well prepared with sun hats, water bottles, and stationery. School Activity fees are now $20.00 (which pays for school shows and Life Education). If any parent/caregiver requires financial assistance please contact Jennie McLaren or your child’s class teacher. Some Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programmes/activities that teachers plan may incur costs such as transport or materials. This will require parents/caregivers making a contribution to the costs. Sports fees are now $25.00 for each term (which is paid to the various Sports Associations). This term students can consider joining one of the Flipper Ball (water polo) or Touch Rugby teams. Teachers will be contacting parents and caregivers either in person or by phone before the end of February. This is important for your child. In order for teachers to build relationships with their students; they also need to get information from you about your child’s strengths, needs, abilities, talents and interests. You may wish to see your child’s teacher after school.

Communicating with staff on any matter is important. For any concerns or queries, firstly consider contacting your child’s teacher. The senior leadership team comprises myself, Jennie McLaren (Deputy Principal and SENCo), and Wendy Falconer (Assistant Principal and Room 5 class teacher). We are readily available by phone, email or in person. The team leaders are Raeleen Walker Hulme (Junior Team, Room 4 teacher), Ruth Mountney (Middle Team, Room 9 teacher) and Jo Jenkins (Senior Team, Room 11 teacher).A full staff list is provided in this week’s newsletter.

Malfroy School became an accredited Cornerstone Values school in 2008. There are eight values that we try to cover each year. Term One - Respect, Responsibility and DutyTerm Two - Kindness, Consideration and Concern for OthersTerm Three - Honesty and TruthfulnessTerm Four - Obedience and Compassion

We firmly believe that the wellbeing of our students and staff is a major goal. For this reason we have invested, over the last five years, a lot of time ensuring that systems, programmes and strategies are in place to support school-wide initiatives. These include Inclusive Practices, Positive Behaviour for Learning, and Health Promoting Schools.

Students and staff have responded well to the hot afternoons.

Teachers have been at school over the two weeks preparing their Teaching and Learning programmes for the term. Your child will receive a class newsletter today outlining the focus for their learning. Two major concepts will be looked at during the year with various contexts that will interest and challenge students. These are SYSTEMS and STRUCTURES.

Last year we began to implement the elements of Visible Learning. We realised that to improve the progress and achievement of our students we had to make learning relevant, engaging, challenging and visible. Students now think about these leading questions:

★ Where am I going? (Learning Intention)★ How am I going? (Success Criteria)★ Where to next? (Feedback)
