Music & Dance

Our Music Tutor, Solomon Burrell, was at our parent information session on Tuesday, giving all students an experience at playing bass and the drums. Students will also have the opportunity to be in the choir or to learn the recorder this year and play at the Sydney Opera House. This year is a Hawkesbury Dance Festival Year and Mrs Rodwell and Mrs van Hensbergen are currently organising Dance Teams for different stages.

Staffing

Our congratulations to Mrs Bean on the arrival of her new baby girl, Sophia. Both mum and baby are doing well. Our congratulations also go to Mrs van Hensbergen who is expecting her first child in early July. Mrs van Hensbergen will be replaced by Mrs Dickerson who has a wealth of experience on Kindergarten.

Yu-Gi-Oh Cards

When I first came to Wilberforce last year, I remember the craze was BeyBlades, now students have moved to Yu-Gi-Oh cards. While we have no problems with students playing with these cards in their breaks, students should not be trading them at school.

NEWS, NOTES AND HAPPENINGS

Our Captains at Leadership Camp

Our captains this year are Juliette R and Ryan S. Juliette and Ryan went on Leadership Camp last week. Here is an account of their experience.

At Yarramundi Leadership Camp there were lots of activities such as archery, low ropes where we walked along tight ropes with no harness just two people on both sides of you in case you fell, make a movie on things we think would help our school in more ways than one, team initiatives where we had to work as a team to solve puzzles, rock climbing, flying fox and public speaking. The activities taught us a lot of things such as how to trust each other, how to encourage everyone, to be confident and how to be a leader amongst other leaders. At Yarramundi we made lots of new friends with people we didn't even know.

Thank you to:

The P&C volunteers for their outstanding efforts assisting with the parent information evening and BBQ.

Mrs Wilkes for organising the Swimming Carnival.

All of the teachers for presenting or supervising students on Tuesday evening.

Stage 1 & Stage 2 Book Covering

Thank you to the teams of parents and grandparents who attended the book covering working bees last week. Your time and work was appreciated by students and staff. More than 1000 books were covered during the sessions with some volunteers kindly taking trays home to finish the job. The covered books look wonderful!

STAGE NEWS

Early Stage 1

Wow, what a great start Kindergarten has made this year! They have settled into routine and are learning wonderful skills in independence and problem solving. Kindergarten are beginning to read with crisp finger pointing and are writing one sentence with assistance. They have enjoyed a range of counting and number identification activities, focussing on the numbers 1 to 10. We have also enjoyed developing our fine-motor and gross-motor skills in craft and sporting lessons. Kindergarten are playing happily in the playground, and are enjoying the fun activities provided in the Library and PlayZone Shed. Well done on such a wonderful start to school Kindergarten!

Stage 1

It has been pleasing to see the Stage 1 students settled quickly into new classes and new routines. In English we have commenced public speaking, reading groups and writing sessions. The students have been engrossed when listening to ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. In Mathematics lessons, TEN groups have been formed and the students are keen to improve their arithmetic skills. Our history topic is ‘The Past in the Present’ and our excursion to Brewongle EEC will be an opportunity to learn more. CAPA groups include activities in drama, dance and music. Art lessons have resulted in vibrant book covers and art based on the work of famous artists. The students participate in mixed sports groups to develop fundamental movement skills of catch, hop, skip, gallop and overarm throw.

Stage 3

Welcome to Stage 3 for 2019. Our classes are 5/6C with Mrs Chia, 5/6R with Mr Ranger and 5/6T with Ms Tierney. To develop these skills, the students will be involved in many activities including silent reading, modelled reading, guided reading, guided writing, independent writing, spelling, handwriting, punctuation, grammar, language and vocabulary development activities. Students have the opportunity to work independently, in small groups and as a whole class. Each student participates in a literacy program which is appropriate for their stage of development.

Mathematics: Students learn mathematical skills and concepts within the strands of whole number, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, chance, patterns and algebra, measurement, which includes time, length, area, volume, and capacity, mass, space and geometry.
