Wilberforce Public Speaking Competition 2018

The first Public Speaking Competition was outstanding. I commend every student across the school who presented a speech at the end of last term, and our finalists who made the job of adjudicating very difficult. I know our students competing this week certainly impressed all who attended these finals. The results were as follows with the winners from Years 3-6 moving onto the Hawkesbury Learning Community Semi Final in Week 4.

Kindergarten Winner: Lacie B Runner Up: Lacey H

Stage 1 Winner: Alison W Runner Up: Ryan F Highly Commended: Zoe V

Stage 2 Winner: Claire T Runner Up: Madison M

Stage 3 Winner: Mackenzie K Runner Up: Thomas B

All our contestants should feel very proud on their wonderful achievement of getting to the final competition level at our school. Many thanks to Ms Maunder for coordinating and to Ms Tierney for adjudicating.

Congratulations also to our student leaders including Mikayla G, Kurt R, Ella J and Gabe S on their wonderful public speaking and organisation skills in running these special assemblies and to Katie S and Heidi L for time keeping.

Special thanks also to all those parents and relatives who came along to support our students. I know they really appreciate you being there for them.

Hawkesbury Music Festival

Our school participated in the Hawkesbury Music Festival last night and it was certainly a fantastic evening with our choir shining on stage. It was a very proud day for our school community and will have a full wrap up in the next newsletter.

Kindergarten Parent Information Meeting & Transition Visits Start

Next Wednesday 31st October, we will have the pleasure of meeting our new Kindergarten students and parents who have children starting school in 2019. After this information session we then look forward to further activities with our pre kinder students and their families with the aim of making our new students feel like Wilberforce is their next place to be!

I would especially like to acknowledge the many hours spent by Mrs van Hensbergen in coordinating this very important program and Mrs Turner on organising and creating the packages and information for parents and students.

2019 School Organisation

Our school is beginning the complex process of organising class structures for 2019; staff spend many hours looking at structures and student needs when creating classes. In order to ensure that the needs of students are met, parents are also invited to forward information that you believe should be considered by staff in regards to the formation of classes for next year. Requests can include information regarding medical conditions, requests to have particular children separated and/or any other aspect that you feel may have an impact on your child’s learning. Please forward requests to, [email protected] or to the office in writing by Friday 16th November to ensure your child’s needs can be considered. Please note: The information you provide is only part of the considerations for classes next year and teachers work in the best interests of all our students.

We also realise some families are moving and have a variety of changes occurring which may result in them having to leave our school. If you do anticipate that you and your family will not be with us next year, please contact our friendly office staff or myself as soon as possible on 4575 1424. This information is vital to us so we can ensure we form the correct classes and support structures for our students.

STAGE NEWS

Early Stage 1

Welcome back to Term 4. Kindergarten has started the term with enthusiasm and success. We are continuing to develop Reading and Writing skills. In Writing, we are focusing on adjectives, commas and speech marks. In Mathematics, we are building our understanding of doubles, friends of ten, area, position and data. We are learning about how to look after the environment in Geography. In Science, we are investigating the properties and purposes of different materials. Our Art lessons will involve mixed-media and a Christmas theme. We are currently enjoying Drama lessons and will soon start to learn the recorder in Music. The fundamental movement skills for this term are kick and strike. Kindergarten is also learning Child Protection this term which discusses private and non-private body parts and how to stay safe. We are looking forward to a busy last term of Kindergarten.

Stage 1

Welcome back for Term 4! It has been pleasing to see the Stage 1 students return ready for a new term of learning. Reading groups continue and the students are progressing to new levels as their skills develop. We are seeing improvement in hearing and recording sounds in words through the Sound Waves spelling program. In writing, we will practise writing informative and persuasive pieces. The students are looking forward to following recipes to make fairy bread and writing instructions for themselves. Public speaking topics for the term have been listed in homework books. TEN (Targeting Early Numeracy) groups continue in Mathematics and multiplication and division are our first topics.

We have commenced an engaging Science unit, ‘Dinosaurs and more’. This will involve observing the external features of modern animals and comparing them with the skeletons of prehistoric creatures. Term 4 art activities link to this topic. On Wednesday afternoons, our creative arts groups continue with students participating in dance, music, singing or recorder lessons. The students are enthusiastic during our Friday sport session as they are learning partner and individual social dances, including heel toe polka, Mexican hat dance and the macarena. The hall is alive with music, dancing bodies and lots of smiles during this time!

Stage 2

Welcome back to another jam packed and exciting term. This term, Stage 2 will be continuing on their Soundwaves journey, by focusing on transferring their learned spelling words and strategies into their own writing. All Stage 2 teachers have seen a HUGE improvement so far in their students attempting to transfer their Soundwaves knowledge into their writing. Keep it up Stage 2! We will be finishing the English unit “Convince Me”, where we have been learning to write text using the PEEL paragraph structure. The final tasks involve researching why we should (or should not) clean up space and constructing a 30 second advert to keep the school, using the tablets. We will then study “writing to entertain”, which focuses on narratives and poetry.

In History lessons we will be learning about British Colonisation, and the effects of colonisation. Our Science unit this term is Smooth Moves, where students will discover how and why we use all types of forces including friction, gravity and pushes and pulls. During Stage 2 singing lessons students have been learning about different forms of music and how we can use our bodies as an instrument to make body percussion. In Art lessons, we will be doing lots of fun activities in preparation for the festive season.

Our School gardens are coming along nicely, with Stage 2 students being regular visitors. Students have learnt about the types of plants that are suitable to grow in our particular climate, and how the elements effect the growth and maturity of each plant. Fingers crossed our crops will be ready before the term ends so we can partake in some cooking lessons!

Stage 3

It is hard to believe that Term 4 has commenced and Year 6 are in their last term of primary school. This term, Stage 3 will complete our Science Unit on ‘Electricity’ and the Geography Unit on “Asia’. Look forward to seeing our Asian inspired artwork in the hall soon!

Interrelate lessons begin in 2 weeks. We cannot emphasise enough, the importance and value of this program for Stage 3. As students enter into their adolescent years, so much misinformation is presented to them and this is the perfect opportunity for them to learn about the changes they will experience as they progress into their teen years.

Thank you Mrs Chia, who is currently holding weekly meetings on Monday afternoon, with Year 5 parents to plan the upcoming Year 6 Farewell. A cake stall is planned to raise money for the dinner, so there is no cost to the students. If you are able to help, in any way, come along to 5/6C classroom on Mondays at 3:30pm.

Stage 3 cont.

Year 5 can look forward to the annual leadership day, presented at Glossodia Public School on 5th November and Year 6 will have their respective High School Orientation days throughout the term.

Camp is quickly approaching, so please remember payment dates. Further notes will be coming soon to outline camp details, packing requirements and medical information.

Term 4 is always a busy time with lots of exciting milestones to celebrate. Thank you for your continued support throughout the year.

Last term, Mrs Ahmedi showed Stage 3 how to cook fish curry. We watched her add the ingredients, helped stir it and helped eat it! Thanks Mrs Ahmedi

Mrs Ahmedi’s fish curry was delicious. I could eat it all day. The fish was nice and soft and very flavoursome. It was the best curry I’ve ever had.

Mikayla G 5/6C

Mrs Ahmedi’s fish curry was delicious and I liked the fish because it fell apart in my mouth.

Lilyarna H 5/6C

Mrs Ahmedi’s fish curry was amazing! She let us help to cook it and we got to see the whole process. It was really fun.
