Welcome to 2016

Summer

I remember hearing the lovely sound of the waves lapping onto the hot sand, I remember tasting the coldest ice-cream on the hottest day, I remember the amazing feel of the waves as I dived underwater in the nice cool sea, I remember the smell of a nearby barbecue sizzling the most delicious sausages, I remember seeing the shiny, shimmery ocean, As the sun shone down on me, As the day comes to a close, I remember feeling so relaxed and refreshed, I went home skipping.

Orewa Jazz Festival

We had the privilege of being asked to play at the Orewa Arts Fiesta recently. On a

beautiful sunny day, the Jazz Band entertained the crowds with all of the numbers that they learnt to play so well last year. We also had some special guests from

previous years lending us their talents for the day.

We are attending the Tauranga Jazz Festival in March this year for the first time and can’t wait.

Dance Accomplishments Outstanding accomplishment for two Whangaparaoa College Dance

students: Emily Price (Year 10) and Amy Gibson (Year 12), both achieved exceptional

exam results in their respective Tap Dancing and Ballet exams recently. They are

pupils at Susie’s School of Dancing and Susie Williams, Principal at the dance school, has proudly shared with us that Emily and Amy attained the highest marks in the

country for their respective Grade 5 exams, both passing with High Distinction. Emily’s examiner acknowledged that Emily demonstrated the highest

standard and most impressive exam work of all the exams seen throughout NZ, of which there were literally hundreds, and

as a result, was awarded the IDTA NZ Scholarship for 2015.

Whangaparaoa College would like to congratulate you both

on your outstanding achievements.

Coastal Challenge 2016

A group of 5 learners, Jesse O’Leary, Sam Risbrook, Caitlin Windress, Baylee

Shepherd and Corey Leith, took on the Coastal Challenge last weekend participating as a relay team. They ran in the Full Monty 33 km run from Arkles Bay to Devonport

around the coastline. They came 11th in the overall and 7th in their division in a time of 3:44:44 - an amazing result.

Mr Thomas also took on the Coastal Challenge but as an individual competitor, he was delighted to finish, albeit well behind the learners!

2016 Whangaparaoa Rotary Soap Box Derby We have had many years of being

involved with the Soap Box Derby and

have had great success, which we would like to see continue. However,

due to other commitments we have no teacher in charge.

So, we are asking for parents/volunteers to run our college soapbox derby this year.

We do have a group of 5 very committed learners interested and a possible 5

more. Unfortunately, if we are unable to get parent support to run the team it will most likely not go ahead this year. If you are interested in running the team (which

could be run from your home), please email [email protected]

The date for the Derby is Saturday 19 March and if the team gets into the final Sunday 20 March, the following day. For details on the Derby and Family Fun

Day call Terry Clarkson on 021 918 980 or email [email protected]

Thank you for your consideration in helping to continue our participation in this

Community/National event. James Thomas

Extra Buses and Pick-Up/Drop-Off Zones Auckland Transport (AT) have agreed to our request for another Route 20 bus. This

new bus started on Monday 22 February. As a result we are required to make some changes to the bus stop as well as the pick-up arrangements.

Bus Stops (see map, following page): Route 20 buses will pick up from the upper Bus Stop. The others will continue to use

the lower Bus Stop.

Pick up (see map, following page): We are fortunate to have a huge carpark up the College driveway, where there is

plenty of room for safe dropping off and picking up of your children. Parents will no longer be able to pick up their children from the areas below the

upper Bus Stop.

These changes are requirements we need to comply with, in order to have AT’s

support for adequate buses.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

James Thomas Principal
