“One major obstacle to advancing on the path of sustainable development is the lack of a cadre of development professionals, who are trained to recognize the interrelated challenges that global society faces today. Issues of poverty, disease, climate change and biodiversity are complex and interwoven and so is their relationship with maintaining the health of natural resources. The need of the hour is to promote understanding of interrelationships across sectors. To address the gaps in the current training for development professionals, TERI University is offering a multi-disciplinary master’s programme, which would provide understanding across the fields of natural and social sciences, health sciences and management. Global society in the future would benefit immensely from practical policies and well-managed programmes that would be designed and shaped by professionals trained in sustainable development practice”

Masters in Sustainable Development Practice: MA (SDP)

Page 8: TERI University Masters in Sustainable Development Practice Placement Brochure

The MA (Sustainable Development Practice), launched at TERI University in July 2010, aims to develop an international cadre of development professionals, well-equipped to tackle beyond cultural boundaries and across sectoral divisions, the interwoven challenges of extreme poverty, disease, climate change issues and ecosystem vulnerability. Though a large number of institutions are currently engaged in providing short-term and sector specific professional training to development practitioners, masters-level programmes on multi-disciplinary education are offered by only a handful of institutes.

The MA (SDP) programme at TERI University is designed based upon the recommendations of the International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice that executed a global situation analysis of development training programmes, during 2007-08. TERI University was one of the first ten universities chosen by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to receive seed funding to create the new master’s degree programme in Sustainable Development Practice. Presently twenty universities worldwide offer similar courses. Globally recognized as Master’s in Development Practice (MDP), this is a two-year full-time programme.

TERI University brings in strong cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral orientation and a practice focus based on unique curriculum using new pedagogical tools, having received inputs from national and international development organizations. It seeks to enhance knowledge and skills necessary to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals and promote best practice in the development sector. MA (SDP) draws on the teaching and research expertise of national and international leaders from numerous areas. To make the students of diverse backgrounds cope with the intensive coursework, the programme offers preparatory and midterm seminars and workshops on basic subjects like communication skills and advanced quantitative techniques. Furthermore, careful engagement with a network of development organizations, research institutes and corporate divisions committed to sustainable development provides an ever-expanding constituency of institutions willing to promote enabling environment for MA (SDP) graduates through instilling core competencies in sustainable development practice as well as offering rewarding career opportunities.

Completing the journey through an intensive multi-disciplinary curriculum for two-years since 2010, the first batch of MA (SDP) students will graduate in June, 2012. TERI University looks forward to a successful start of professional career of this pioneering cadre of ‘generalist development professionals’ prepared to better identify and address the challenges to sustainable development.

Programme Philosophy

By its very philosophy, the programme targets to fill the need for “generalist development professionals”, in the overhauling issues of sustainable development

encompassing four knowledge domains – natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, social sciences and management.

terI university

The term “Sustainable Development” has become part of common parlance ever since the Brundtland report was published in 1987. But the principles of sustainable development, be it in the context of economic growth, environmental protection or social equity have often not been fully understood and implemented. We at TERI University, keeping in mind the present context, focus on the practice of sustainable development as a holistic approach to addressing the current and emerging challenges facing the world. There is clearly a dearth of trained professionals in the practice of sustainable development. Our unique Master’s Programme in Sustainable Development Practice was introduced in 2010, with the objective of addressing this lacuna that exists in the development sector. Our first batch of young talented students would graduate in June 2012, equipped within a range of skills and knowledge from the domains of social sciences, management, health sciences, and natural sciences.

TERI University is an ideal incubator for this new cadre of development practitioners. It provides a suitable environment to develop dynamic personalities that can play a crucial role in the design and implementation of integrated solutions that are needed to promote sustainable development. We expect these professionals to challenge policy makers and be the agents to bring about lasting change. We hope that you share our excitement and draw upon this resource base to help us all achieve our common goal of sustainability.

I feel immense pride to see the first batch of MA(SDP) enter their final semester. These change-makers are entering the outside world, with cross-disciplinary problem solving skills, extremely important for addressing development issues that plague the South Asian region. TERI University’s MA in Sustainable Development Practice is a unique programme, seeking to create core competencies in natural and social sciences, project and programme management, research methods and so on, all relevant to the development sector.

The programme brings a strong practice focus in its curriculum and provides students with a range of real life opportunities to work on cross-sector development challenges. Being one of the handful of degree programmes launched globally with seed funding from the MacArthur Foundation, there are high expectations that the MA (SDP) graduates would be able to bring about a radical change in our approach to understanding and identifying solutions to the challenge of achieving sustainable development goals in diverse social and cultural contexts.

As development professionals in the public as well as private sector, these graduates can potentially play transformative roles not only within their own organizations but also for the society at large. I wish them all the best in realizing this potential within themselves.

MA (SDP) based at TERI University is linked to the Global Network of MDP Programs coordinated by the Global Secretariat of MDP based at Columbia University, USA. The Global Network includes various universities and a broad range of collaborating organizations around the world offering a Master’s in Development Practice (MDP). At present, the Global Network consists of 20 MDP programs, offered at universities in 16 countries on six continents, and more than 50 collaborating organizations ranging from local and regional governmental and non-governmental public and private organizations, to large, multi-national agencies. The MDP network of universities is further enriched by establishing linkages with diverse organizations working in areas of health, ecology, poverty-alleviation, management and multiple social institutions. This synergy proves mutually beneficial for the Global MDP network and the agencies, the first providing expertise in holistic approaches and the later providing an enabling living laboratory to prepare through opportunities of field site placement, internships, and finally by employing well-prepared development practitioners.
