From The Chancellor’s desk

TERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet the needs of a rapidly growing economy. One of the key focus areas of the University is to promote sustainability in Indian business. The MBA programme at TERI University helps fulfill this objective by training students to take on leadership, consulting, and managerial roles in industry. Today’s regulated enterprises require specialist knowledge of the unique business eco-system and, thus, the need for a specialist management education has been felt by policy-makers as well as by the industry. The support extended by the Government of India and a cross-section of organizations like NTPC, UNEP, USAID, Ford Foundation, NHPC, SAIL provide a testimony to this reality. The Management Graduates from TERI University have received excellent response from business areas as diverse as consulting and research, finance/investment banking, utilities, energy/power, infrastructure development, oil and gas, and so on. By virtue of their intensive training, I see management graduates from TERI University bring about positive transformation in the sectors in which they choose to pursue their career.

TERI University, established in 1998, has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet this set of needs for a rapidly developing India. The academic programmes at TERI University are envisioned to provide students a holistic perspective of the

subject at hand and have a wide approach to encourage interdisciplinary learning. Among its other programmes including masters in various fields like Economics, Environmental Sciences, and so on, also on offer are MBA programmes in Infrastructure and in Business Sustainability. The MBA (Business Sustainability) combines conventional MBA curriculum with new sustainability challenges that have direct impact on a firm’s future performance, financial and otherwise, the MBA (Infrastructure) provides training in the concepts and skills involved in the infrastructure service delivery, regulatory process, competition policy, apart from covering the conventional management courses.

The University has recently, launched an MA (Sustainable Development Practice) programme, the TERI University being one of the ten institutions chosen world- wide by the MacArthur Foundation, to run this program.

The University encourages exchange of ideas, cultural understanding and a wide range of knowledge that would result from international perspectives. To achieve this, the TERI University has academic collaborations with several select foreign universities, which provide for joint curriculum development and exchange of faculty and students. Top performers in the master’s programs get an opportunity to do their major projects at Yale University, USA, or at Freie University of Berlin, which are entirely funded through collaborative tie-ups.

TERI University functions from the ‘green campus,’ located in Vasant Kunj Institutional Area, New Delhi. The University continues to share the rich and diverse resources of TERI in terms of knowledge and expertise. The new campus has been planned to provide a setting that enhances learning, while simultaneously showcasing the concept of modern green buildings.

MBA (Business Sustainability) Introduction

The contemporary business models that are followed worldwide have generated unforeseen levels of technological innovation and economic growth but have also made emerging economies like India more vulnerable by putting severe strains

on our environment, personal lives and social systems. In TERI University we strongly believe in the synergy between healthy businesses, healthy environments and healthy societies that essentially provide the fulcrum of an inclusive growth process. Recognizing the pitfalls of the current business models, the MBA in Business Sustainability that the University offers is not only intended to equip the students with acumen to lead in a resource-sensitive world but also allow adequate room for the students to inculcate within themselves the basic tenets of inclusion and sustainability.

While covering the sustainability issues in a holistic manner, the programme also aims at achieving a synergy between these issues and the usual management courses. Thus the programme includes conventional MBA courses on Marketing, Business Strategies, Finance, and IT, apart from a basket of electives. The programme thus equips the students with an excellent overview of basic management issues with sustainability concepts being integrated with the same. In that sense it is a MBA plus programme.

The learning process is highly participatory and students are encouraged to debate on sustainability principles and practices and brainstorm on multiple solutions for the contemporary sustainability challenges that the business organizations of the twenty first century face or are likely to face. An additional emphasis is also put at providing historical, ideological and contextual perspectives on the concepts, and strategies employed by the businesses and their stakeholders. The course structure usually consists of a combination of the in-class lectures, student seminars, field trips and course assignments.

Programme OutlineCore courses offered during the first two semesters build the foundation, and familiarize students with the tools of business management. In addition, these core courses, while covering the established business disciplines, will have sustainability as a common thread running through them.

The third and fourth semesters focus on sustainability issues and functional specialization courses in marketing, finance, and so forth. In this way, students gain a holistic view on how to meet challenges when they join the industry.

Students have the flexibility to pursue one or more specializations during the third and the fourth semesters. All they need to do is select a set of elective courses from the designated streams. They have to choose at least eight electives during third and fourth semesters. A minimum of three electives from any stream constitutes a specialization.

By integrating social, environmental, and ethical consciousness with traditional management education, MBA (Business Sustainability) prepares future business leaders for a sustainable tomorrow.

With the Indian economy traversing steadily across the high growth trajectory of 8 to 9 percent in the recent years despite the bout of

a recent worldwide recession, investment in infrastructure has become all the more crucial in order to sustain this rapid pace of economic growth. In fact, infrastructure has been recognized by the Indian Government as the engine of robust future growth of the economy. The latest Union Budget 2011-12 bears ample testimony to such recognition with a substantially enhanced allocation for the sector to ` 2,14,000 crores. The private sectors inflows in this sector have also been estimated to reach US$ 384 billion over the 11th five year plan period. These figures clearly establish that Indian Infrastructure Industry is entering a rejuvenated phase and would inevitably require a pool of skilled professionals to steer its path in a steady manner.

We at TERI University have risen to these challenges well in advance by offering an MBA plus programme with a specialisation in infrastructure. We are dubbing it as MBA plus programme because the programme not only imparts the students the managerial skills in the core subject like any other conventional MBA but additionally equip them with acumen in infrastructure management by offering sector electives in Transport, Energy, Telecom and Urban Infrastructure. The course also provides a foundation for effective management of infrastructure services through comprehensive courses on the regulatory process and competition policy in the sector.

At the University, we believe in conditioning the students not only with strong conceptual foundation but also instil in

them the confidence to counter the rigour and challenges pertaining to the growth of the sector and stand out as the business leaders of tomorrow. This is achieved through a highly participatory learning process using introspective case studies for the students to experience the simulated environment of the corporate world and for developing decision making skills in a complex setting. The pedagogy essentially comprises classroom lectures, field visits, term papers, and a large number of guest lectures by practitioners and experts, seminars and discussion forums, and role play.

Programme StructureMBA (Infrastructure) programme offers training in traditional management disciplines such as management concepts, marketing, and organizational behaviour. In addition, equal emphasis is given to the four foundations of infrastructure management viz. Finance, Economics, Technology & Risk Management, and Law.

Moreover, students have the flexibility to pursue one or more sector and functional specializations in the third and fourth semesters by selecting a set of elective courses from the designated streams. They have to choose at least eight electives during third and fourth semesters. A minimum of three electives from any one functional specialization stream – such as marketing or finance – constitutes a specialization. In addition, a minimum of two electives from any one sector stream constitutes a specialization. Choosing at least one sector specialization and one functional specialization is compulsory.

MBA (Infrastructure)

Infrastructure will continue to be a critical input for economic growth and MBA (Infrastructure) graduates will play a vital role in the growth story.

Industry Testimonials

TERI University has very good infrastructure and education facilities. Industry exposure is a must for the students. We feel TATA BP SOLAR gives the students an excellent exposure through two months summer internship. We also benefited from the sincerity and enthusiasm of the students during summer internship 2009. The student gain practical knowledge by working in of the largest solar company in Asia Pacific. We look forward to such associations.

The curriculum at TERI University is a perfect blend of academic inquisitiveness and practical experience from the industry. The coursework encompasses all the aspects of the infrastructure sector right from the development stages, the execution stage, continuing on till the operations. Critical topics such as regulatory policy, sector economics, finance and commercials as well as the socio – political aspects associated with large projects are addressed intensely. This equips Students from TERI University with skill sets required for succeeding in the complex world of Infrastructure development and management.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is the public bank owned by the Member States of the European Union (EU) set up to promote EU policy. In the summer of 2009, its Environment and Social Office (ESO) benefited from the services of a student from TERI, working in the Bank under its student internship program. The student supported ESO in its on-going work on identifying and measuring the carbon footprint of the Bank. ESO benefited from the technical knowledge of the student and his commitment and applications. The student in turn gained a valuable insight into the workings of one of the largest financial institutions in the World.
