Hi everyone,

I must start this month by thanking those of you that have been sending in jokes for the “Wit & Wisdom” page. Emails relating to a variety of diff erent subjects have contained a contribution of wit tagged onto the end., and a special thank you goes to Mo Charlton for sending me numerous jokes and sayings, as well as adding me to his email circulation of witty repartee. Wit & Wisdom lives on!

As this magazine arrives we are about to head into Easter and our thoughts turn to time off from work (yippee), family get togethers and CHOCOLATE Easter Eggs! I’m sure that a very respectable period of time has now elapsed since Mother’s Day so I’m more than ready for my next chocolate fi x.

Easter tends to be the fi rst opportunity to get out into the open and enjoy the spring sunshine, I do

so hope that the weather continues to be good through the holiday period, it’s such a tonic. For those of you planning to tackle the garden, you‘ll fi nd all the help you need within these pages, hopefully this will make it that little easier and enjoyable. You can than sit back with your Easter Eggs at hand and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

As I write a thought just crossed my mind, isn’t it strange that I have no-one advertising chocolate in this magazine? I would make such a good sponsor!

Have a great Easter ~ Enjoy!

AprilIts nice to see that the weather has reverted back to normality, but the damage has been done. The bulbs in the garden once they started emerging just carried on growing, and when the Spring Show arrived, all those lovely bulbs I had planted in pots and containers had been and gone and I had very little to enter. Don’t get me wrong, they looked really lovely on the patio, bright and cheery, but they were for the show, and my chances of winning a cup had gone (sigh). Still there was always the cookery section!

The leeks are all gone now, and very nice they were too. I didn’t realise just how many dishes you could incorporate leeks. I even used them in some ham, cheese and leek stuff ed pancakes in a lovely cheese sauce. A bit diff erent to the usual lemon ones on Pancake day!! The new leek seeds are in and some are showing their little spiky seedling leaf. Grow them on until roughly the size of a spring onion. This will be around June. Lift (this is where I usually give half away), and taking a dibber make a good deep hole, about 5-6inches deep should do it, trim the roots back a little and drop a baby leek into each hole. They need to be about 9-12” apart. Fill each hole with water (don’t fi ll with soil), to settle the roots in. To keep the stems nice and white you can blanch them by drawing dry soil up around the stem. Personally I didn’t bother with this as I found that apart from the really rough leaves, the darker greener leaves were wonderful in soups, casseroles etc and there was very little waste. I have also put in my shallot sets and am having another go at Spring onions. My Achilles heel is Spring onions. No matter what I do they don’t seem to grow. I think this time I shall put them in a trough and see what happens.

It certainly is a busy time for us gardeners, sowing, sowing, sowing. I have put my favourites in again, The Tom Thumb lettuce has been sprinkled onto some damp compost in a tray, which I shall use as baby lettuce seedlings in salads which is plenty for husband and I, but I shall also pop a few to grow on in the vege patch along with my row of Little Gem. French Breakfast radish is a must, peppery

the gardenand hot, brilliant with a nice dip for lunch. Try them in a ham sandwich instead of mustard, you’ll be surprised. Its also about now that I am putting up my runner bean row in readiness for the bean plants come May. These I always sow in small pots around the third week of April and grow on in the greenhouse. When they go in the ground I interspace with a bean, ( it’s the just in case scenario). Now the seeds are in I am going to do a little revamping on the top French patio. The pergola is up and ready to take plants. I managed to get a cutting from the Blue eyes clematis which it threw up itself I hasten to add, so that shall go in the top bed and I think maybe some climbing nasturtiums. Double usage with this one, not only do they look good, but taste good too. Try them mixed into a salad, both leaves and fl owers are peppery and delicious. Bonus is that they are easy to grow and easily self seed.

The Primula that I split didn’t do too bad. I think they could have been better had it not been for the silly weather that we had. I shall leave them in and hope that they improve next year, after all remember they cost me nothing. I have also got to keep and eye on all the cuttings etc that I have

taken for the Jubilee sale at Recreation Ground Road in June, don’t forget to visit us even if its just to say hello.

Its that time again! I don’t know, I’m sure it’s the lighter mornings that does it. Coff ee time seems to come round a lot quicker, and no I’m not getting up any earlier. Now today I have a choice, either a nice marzipan bake all crispy and crunchy, or a slice of scrummy fruit cake. Am I being greedy having both???

Westfi eld Preschool Playgroup wishes to upgrade the toilets that their children use to encourage them to go! They approached Rye and District Lions for help and they agreed to donate £250 towards the cost of refurbishment of suitable toilet facilities for “small people”. This is the Lions second donation to Westfi eld Playgroup, as they donated £200 a year ago towards a greenhouse to enable the children to grow tender plants and vegetables.

Over the last two tears, Rye Lions have made donations to playgroups and nurseries at Beckley, Northiam and Rye, in addition to Westfi eld. At their March meeting they also agreed to make donations of £250 to the Lions campaign to prevent blindness, SightFirstII, £50 to sponsor a Lion in the London Marathon and £100 to sponsor a parachute jump in aid of Help for Heroes. Over the last two weekends they raised £703 by serving refreshments at Rye’s Scallop Week.

Westfi eld Preschool Playgroup, which meets in Westfi eld Church Hall,is able to accommodate a few more pre-school age children and anyone interested should contact Sarah Burnage on 07708 061306, or visit the Playgroup in the Church Hall.

The changes to life that retirement brings can be quite a shock, even if you have been looking forward to it. Losing the focus of going to work each day can be hard and it is easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. But research shows that those who keep active both physically and mentally enjoy a healthier later life. So what can you do?

The benefi ts of activityRegular exercise has a huge number of benefi ts: it strengthens your muscles, aiding mobility and reducing the risk of falls and conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis (brittle bones). It also helps to reduce the risk of other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke. It improves coordination and balance and encourages a healthy appetite, regular bowel movements and means you are more likely to sleep well at night. It also stimulates the brain, so that you’re less likely to suff er from stress or depression.

Small amounts of regular exercise or activity is better for you than a big burst of energy one day and then nothing for the rest of the week. And exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym - there is plenty you can do at home and while you’re out and about to keep active.

At home you can tackle the garden - just a little weeding or pruning is using your muscles and keeping them fl exible; and even housework is great for strengthening muscles. Try an exercise DVD at home - and ask a friend to join you to make it more fun. Walk as much as you can each day - to the local shops or library and take up some social activities that will encourage you to meet other people as well as

exercise, such as dance or arts & craft classes; or keep fi t for the over 50s. And, if you have lots of energy, you could even try Zumba, which is fast-paced and fun. All these activities will keep your muscles moving and supple.

Age UK (formerly Age Concern) has a nationwide programme, Fit as a Fiddle, which supports people over 50 with physical activity, healthy eating and mental wellbeing. Find out more at www.fi tasafi ddle.org.uk

Keeping mentally stimulatedStudies show that the more you use your brain the more mentally active you’ll remain. As well as slowing down memory loss (although you’re still likely to forget things!), you can also reduce the chances of conditions such as Alzheimer’s. As with physical exercise, keeping mentally active can also help to reduce stress and depression.

There are many activities that can help to keep your brain mentally agile. At home you can tackle crossword puzzles, Sudoku or chess. Maybe now is the time to start reading all those books you never had time for when you were working? It is also possible to ‘train’ your mind by using trigger words to jog your memory. Using sticky notes on the fridge will help to remind you of what you need to do that day.

Joining groups with common interests will encourage you to meet and interact with new people as well as keeping your mind occupied. Try bingo; learn a new language or how to use a computer; or enrol on a cookery course.

Your local council or library will have information on classes and activities for older people - just take your pick!

WWIISSDDOOMM

A daughter says to her ageing father, it‛s taken you eighty years But you have fi nally learnt to put your hand In front of your face when you

sneeze,Of course i do says the old man, how else can i catch my teeth.

The Magical Bank Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest:

Each morning your bank would deposit £86,400.00 in your private account for your use. However, this prize had rules, just as any game has certain rules. The fi rst set of rules would be:

1. Everything that you didn’t spend during each day would be taken away from you.

2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account.

3. You may only spend it.

Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another £86,400.00 for that day.

The second set of rules:

1. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, “It’s over, the game is over!”

2. It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted, right? Not only for yourself, but for all people you love, right? Even for people you don’t know, because you couldn’t possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, right?

ACTUALLY, THIS GAME IS REALITY!

Each of us is in possession of such a “magical” bank. We just can’t seem to see it. THE MAGICAL BANK IS TIME! Each awakening morning we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life, and when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. What we haven’t lived up that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone. Each morning the account is refi lled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time... WITHOUT WARNING.

WELL, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds?

Aren’t they worth so much more than the same amount in pounds? Think about that, and always think of this:

Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, and enjoy life!

.

Two elderly ladies had been

friends for many decades. Over

the years, they had shared all

kinds of activities and adventures.

LatelyTheir activities had been limited to

meeting a few times a week to play

cards. One day they were playing

cards when one looked at the other

And said “now dont get mad at

me....I know weve been friends for

a long time, but i cant think of your

name! Ive thought and thought

But i cant remember it. Please tell

me what your name is”

Her friend glared at her for at

least three minutes she just stared

and glared at her. Finally she said

“how soon do you need to know”

I had a very happy childhood; every summer dad would squeeze me into a car tyre and roll me down all the hills. They were goodyears!

Overheard at a rowing boat lake:

“Come in number 9, your time is

up!”2nd voice, “Number 9 isn‛t out

today John, it‛s being repainted in

the shed”Original voice, “number 6, do you

need any help?”

Our Private Care Service

offers tailored packages of personal care that can help people stay in their own home for as long as possible, rather than going into a care home before it’s really needed. We assist those who need help due to frailty, disability or illness to live as independently as possible with comfort & dignity in their own home.

We welcome self funding service users as well as those who use the Kent Card or who receive a Direct Payment.
