NATIONAL RANKINGS

 BY THE NUMBERS

» Friday night’s match against Auburn is head coach Rob Pat-rick’s 500th career match as the leader of the Lady Vols.

21» With one win this weekend, Tennessee would capture its 21st 20-win season in pro-gram history and the 10th of Coach Patrick’s tenure.

3.59

TENNESSEE IN THE RANKINGS¢ For the third consecutive season, Tennessee

opened its campaign in the national rankings, coming in at No. 15 in the AVCA Preseason Poll. The preseason ranking was the ninth in program history for UT, who concluded 2011 rated as No. 19.¢ On Aug. 27, the Lady Vols moved up one position

to No. 14 in the nation following wins over Cincinnati and then-No. 10 Iowa State. UT fell down two notches to No. 16 after posting a 2-1 mark at the Shocker Volleyball Classic.¢ The Big Orange went 3-0 at Maryland’s Spring-

Hill Suites Invitational with three sweeps, but dropped one spot to No. 17 in the AVCA Poll on Sept. 10.¢ After opening their SEC slate 2-3, the Lady Vols

dropped out of the top 25 on Oct. 1 for the first time in 17 polling periods and since September 2011.¢ The 16-week stretch was the fourth longest in

school history. UT had two stretches of 19-straight weeks (2009-11; 1982-84) and one stretch of 17 con-secutive weeks (2004-05) in the poll.¢ After entering the rankings at No. 24 on Nov. 30,

2009, the Lady Vols spent 19 consecutive polling pe-riods in the Top 25, until falling out for a four-week span last season. ¢ 10 wins in their last 11 matches would not boost

the Lady Vols back into the polls, but they are receiv-ing votes for the seventh straight week (Nov. 12).

» Ellen Mullins’ 3.59 digs per set average over her career currently ranks third in the Tennessee volleyball record books.

LADY VOL NOTESDEFENSIVE P.O.W. ONCE AGAIN¢ Junior libero Ellen Mullins was named the SEC

Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Lady Vol to straight-set wins at Ole Miss and South Carolina last week.¢ The honor is the third defensively player of the

week award of the season for Mullins. She finished with 33 total digs last week for an average of 5.50 per set and helped the team post a .316 attacking clip as the squad’s primary passer.¢ She led the team with 15 digs at Ole Miss and av-

eraged an even 6.0 digs per game on Sunday at South Carolina, finishing with a team-high 18 scoops.¢ She currently ranks fourth in the SEC in digs per

set with an average of 4.49. In conference matches only she ranks third in the category (4.87 D/Set).¢ It’s the sixth weekly honor of the season for UT.

20-WIN SEASON¢ With one win this weekend, the Lady Vols would

notch their 21st 20-win season in programs history.¢ It would be the fifth 20-win season in a row and

the 10th of Coach Patrick’s 16-year tenure at UT.¢ UT is also just one win away from guaranteeing a

season with 10 or fewer losses. It would be the Lady Vols’ 14th season in program history with 10 or fewer losses, their 10th under Coach Patrick and the fifth in a row.

THE 2012 SENIOR CLASS¢ Tennessee will honor seniors Jasmine Brown,

Leslie Cikra, DeeDee Harrison and Kayla Jeter prior to Sunday’s match against LSU.¢ Over the past four years, this team has compiled

96 wins. With four more victories, this class would be the first four-year class since 1984 to win 100 matches in their career. Until the mid-1980’s, UT played many more matches in a season than today – making the current potential achievement more impressive.¢ This class has amassed a 96-25 record over the

past four seasons for a winning percentage of .793 with four regular season matches to go. Dating back to 1980, that is the highest winning percentage of any four-year Tennessee volleyball class. ¢ The class from 2008-11 posted 99 wins and 29 losses

for the second-highest .773 winning percentage. Prior to that, the class from 2002-05 – which made back to back Sweet 16 appearances – had the highest with a 99-32 re-cord or .755 winning percentage.¢ The 2012 senior class has made the NCAA Tour-

nament every season and consists of three AVCA All-American selections.¢ Tennessee is 8-2 in its last 10 senior day matches,

which includes six sweep wins. UT has faced LSU twice on Senior Day and swept the Tigers both times.

FINISHING STRONG¢ As the postseason approaches, the Lady Vols

have heated up – winning 10 of their last 11 matches. UT finished October with a near-perfect 6-1 record and is 4-0 to start November.¢ Dating back five seasons through the 2008 cam-

paign, the Lady Vols are an impressive 66-12 (.846) in

the months of October and November and have used the two crucial months to help propel themselves into four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

ONE FOR THE AGES¢ Tennessee’s victory at then-No. 13 Florida last

Sunday certainly made its mark in the Lady Vol re-cord books. In the 54-match rivalry, it was the closest match ever played between the two sides. The margin of victory in each set was an average of 3.6 points, the smallest in series history.¢ The Lady Vols have now played nine five-set

matches vs. Florida all-time and have only lost two of them – the last coming in 1987.¢ Along with the two wins last season, Tennessee

has now won three consecutive matches against the Gators, marking the team’s first three-match winning streak since the Lady Vols beat Florida four times in a row from 1988-90.¢ UT snapped a 21-match home regular season winning

streak for the Gators. Tennessee was also the last team to beat UF at home, with a five-set win on Oct. 20, 2011.¢ Tennessee posted a season-high 19 blocks – the

most for the Lady Vols since last season’s NCAA Tour-nament matchup against Ohio State (20). It also was the highest block total for a Florida opponent since UT notched 21 in a five-set win on Oct. 30, 2005.¢ Since Mary Wise took over at Florida in 1991, only six

teams (Long Beach St., LSU, Nebraska, Pacific, USC and Tennessee) have beaten the Gators three times in a row. Tennessee is the first team to do so in the last nine years. Between those six teams there is 11 National Champion-ships – seven of them earned since 1991.

FABULOUS IN FIVE¢ UT has played a league-high nine five-setters

through 25 matches this season and holds a 7-2 re-cord in those matchups.¢ The nine five-set matches this year are the sec-

ond-most in program history, behind only the 1991 campaign when UT played 10.¢ The five-set win at LSU (Oct. 10) was the Lady Vols’

third straight win in five, marking just the second time in program history the team has won back to back to back five-setters. UT defeated South Carolina, Auburn and Kentucky in consecutive five-setters in 2008.¢ This year is just the second time the Big Orange

has ever won two pairs of back to back five-setters in the same season. The Lady Vols also beat Iowa State (Aug. 25) and Colorado State (Aug. 31) in consecutive five-setters earlier this campaign.¢ Tennessee fought back from a two-set deficit

against Georgia (Oct. 7). It was the 16th win after be-ing down 0-2 in school history. From 1997 to 2008, the team was only able to accomplish the feat once. Since 2009, the Lady Vols have won one match in that fashion each season.

1,000-1,000 CLUB¢ With her first dig of the second set at Texas A&M

(10/19), Robinson became the fifth Lady Vol in program history to eclipse the 1,000-mark in career kills and digs.¢ Robinson, who notched her 1,000th career kill in

a five-set win at LSU (10/10) earlier this season, joins Tennessee greats Nikki Fowler, Kristy Dobson, Stepha-nie Ehlers and Sonja Thomas in the exclusive group.¢ Just a junior, Robinson reached the 1,000/1,000

mark in both categories in just 79 matches. Below is a chart of the five club members:

TENNESSEE ON THE ROAD¢ Tennessee is 10-2 in true road matches this season.

UT also has three wins at a neutral location to bring its record away from Knoxville to 13-3 on the campaign.¢ In 2011, the Big Orange finished with a 14-3 re-

cord in matches away from Thompson-Boling Arena, including a 3-1 mark in a neutral location.¢ Dating back through the 2008 campaign, the Lady

Vols are 48-17 (.738) in true road matches. UT is 75-40 (.652) in away matches dating back through the 2004 season.

TENNESSEE IN THE RPI¢ The initial NCAA Division I Volleyball RPI of the

2012 campaign was released last month with the Lady Vols coming in at No. 27 in the nation. After defeat-ing Mizzou and Georgia, UT jumped six spots to No. 21 in the second week of the RPI rankings and went up three more spots after posting wins at LSU and Arkansas to No. 18.¢ Following their win at Texas A&M, the Lady Vols

jumped two more spots to No. 16 in this week’s RPI. After a 1-1 weekend against Kentucky and Alabama, UT dropped three spots to No. 19 in the latest rank-ings (10/29). Even with a win at then-No. 13 Florida, UT fell to 20th in the RPI, but after sweeping Ole Miss and South Carolina, the Lady Vols are back up to 16th.¢ Nine of UT’s 19 wins have come against top 75 RPI

teams: Florida (11), Texas A&M (17), Arkansas (25), Iowa State (28), Colorado State (35), Wichita State (42), Miz-zou (47), UGA (58) and LSU (75).¢ In addition, five of the Big Orange’s six losses have

come against top 25 RPI squads: Florida State (10), BYU (12), twice vs. Kentucky (22) and Arkansas (25). ¢ The SEC has five teams in the top 25 and seven

squads in the top 50 of the RPI rankings: Florida (11), Tennessee (16), Texas A&M (17), Kentucky (22), Arkansas (25), Missouri (47) and Auburn (49).

TENNESSEE vs. THE TOP 25¢ Through 25 matches, the Lady Vols have faced

four opponents ranked in the top 25 and four that were receiving votes in the poll.¢ UT is 3-1 against teams in the top 25 this season

with wins over then-No. 10 Iowa State, then-No. 24 Colorado State and then-No. 13 Florida. The Big Or-ange’s ranked loss was against then-No. 12 Florida State in the season opener. UT also lost to a BYU squad that is now ranked 13th in the weekly poll.¢ The Lady Vols’ three wins over ranked teams are the

only wins over non-conference opponents ranked in the top 25 for SEC teams.¢ Tennessee went 4-2 in matches against ranked op-

ponents in 2011, with a pair of wins over Florida (No. 6 & No. 13), a victory over No. 16 Kentucky and a win against No. 21 Dayton. ¢ En route to its NCAA Regional Final appearance, the

Big Orange defeated a rally-scoring record six ranked teams in 2004. UT shared the SEC title and captured the SEC Tournament title that season.

SUNDAY SUCCESS¢ With the Lady Vols’ straight-set win at South

Carolina (11/11), UT remained undefeated with a per-fect 8-0 mark on Sundays in 2012. Three of the eight matches have been five-set victories.¢ Junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is averag-

ing 4.54 kills per set and 3.57 digs per game on Sun-days, while Mullins is averaging 4.53 digs per game. Harrison is averaging an impressive 1.54 blocks per set

MULLINS JOINS THE CLUB¢ With her first dig at Florida (11/4), Mullins became

the 13th Lady Vol in program history to surpass the 1,000-career dig mark. With Robinson eclipsing the mark earlier this campaign, Mullins is the second UT player this season to join the club.¢ Mullins is averaging a career-best 4.49 digs per

set this season – a mark that would stand third in the UT single-season record books – and now has 1,060 career digs. She ranks 10th in the category.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 1,000-dig club:

HARRISON’S BLOCK PARTY¢ An All-American last season and Preseason All-

SEC honoree this year, Harrison leads the Big Orange with 89 blocks on the season.¢ The Nashville native has upped her blocks per set

average to 1.19 this season and currently ranks second in the league in the category. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker has UT ranked second in the conference in blocks. Over the last 11 matches, she is averaging 1.40 blocks per game.¢ With 339 career blocks entering the weekend,

Harrison has climbed into Tennessee’s top 10 in ca-reer blocks. Her 1.05 career blocks per set currently ranks fifth and her 339 total rejections is good for 10th on the all-time list. She needs just three to move into ninth and six to move into eighth.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s career block leaders:

CAN YOU-T DIG IT?¢ After posting a then-season-high 98 digs at home

against Mizzou (Oct. 5), the Lady Vols bested that mark just five days later when they tied a Tennessee rally scor-ing record with 106 scoops at LSU (Oct. 10). The Lady Vols finished with 90 digs in a five-set win at Florida (11/4).¢ UT has recorded 50 or more digs in 19 of 25

matches this season. ¢ With its recent performances, Tennessee has

climbed to fifth in the SEC in the category with an average of 16.19 digs per set. In SEC matches only, UT ranks second in the category (17.32/Set).

THROWING IT AROUND¢ Over the past 11 matches, Tennessee has dished out a

combined 561 assists for an average of 13.0 per set, includ-ing 458 from sophomore setter Mary Pollmiller. Pollmiller, who shattered UT’s single season assists records last sea-son, is averaging 10.65 dimes per game over the last 11.¢ With Pollmiller’s ability to spread it around, Tennes-

see has climbed to second place in the SEC with a sea-son average of 13.15 assists per game. In SEC matches only, the Lady Vols rank third at 13.02 helpers per frame.¢ Tennessee has posted 50 or more assists in 14

matches this season.

TENNESSEE ON THE TUBE¢ The Lady Vols will make a league high five TV

appearances in the regular season in 2012. UT, which appeared on the network at Mizzou and Kentucky, made its third and final appearance on ESPNU at LSU (10/10). The Big Orange hosted Alabama (10/28) on Fox SportSouth and played at Florida (11/4) on CSS.¢ Since 2001, Tennessee has played 11 matches on ESPN’s

networks and is 6-5 in those matches. Since 2009, UT is 15-5 in TV matches. The Big Orange is 3-2 on TV this season.¢ The Orange & White owns an overall record of 22-

21 in televised matches dating back to 2001.

ROBINSON EARNS MEMBERSHIP¢ Heading into the break at LSU (10/10), Robinson

pounded her 998th and 999th career kills to come-back and win the second set, 26-24. Right after the break, the Bartlett, Ill., native slammed down another - her 1,000th career kill in the Big Orange uniform.¢ With that kill, she became one of just 18 Lady Vols to

eclipse the 1,000-kill plateau. She enters this weekend in 14th place all-time with 1,131 kills.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 1,000-kill club:

20/20 VISION¢ Against South Carolina (9/23), Robinson recorded

21 kills and 22 digs, marking her third 20/20 match of the season and the fifth of her career. While it’s not an of-ficial stat, it’s certainly a rare feat in the UT record books.¢ Since 2001, only six different players have reached

the 20 mark in two statistical categories in a single match on just 14 occasions.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 14 20/20 matches since 2001:

POLLMILLER PASSES 2,000¢ With her 36th assist at home vs. Arkansas (9/21),

Pollmiller became the seventh player in Tennessee history to cross the 2,000-assist mark for her career.¢ As a freshman, she set UT single season rally scoring

records in assists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94). She led all NCAA freshmen in assists per set, while ranking fourth in the nation and first in the SEC. She was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year and an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American. In addition, the rookie garnered AVCA All-South Region Freshman of the Year, SEC All-Freshman Team and AVCA All-South Region Team honors.¢ On top of the next column is UT’s 2,000-assist chart:

SCOUTING AUBURN¢ Auburn enters Friday night’s match in third place

in the SEC Western Division with a 17-9 overall record and an even 8-8 mark in league action. Last week, the Tigers lost in four sets to division-leader Texas A&M.¢ Prior to the loss against the Aggies, the Tigers won

four straight conference matches. AU beat South Caro-lina, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Georgia during the stretch. Auburn is 6-5 in true road matches this season.¢ Auburn ranks in the top five in the SEC in a variety

of statistical categories, including opponent hitting percentage (.166), assists per set (12.9), kills per set (13,73), blocks (2.46) and digs per set (16.62).¢ Leading the Tigers offensively is senior Sarah

Bullock – who ranks 11th in the SEC with 3.43 kills per set and has 309 spikes on the year – and junior middle blocker Camila Jersonsky. She ranks third in the con-ference in hitting percentage (.375) and has 237 kills on the campaign.¢ Jersonsky also leads the squad defensively at the

net with 104 total blocks entering the match. She ranks third in the league with a 1.12 rejection per game average.¢ With two setters leading the way, Auburn is fourth in

the SEC in assists per game. Leading the way is junior Chel-sea Wintzinger, who averages 6.31 helpers per game and freshman Ciara Richards, who dishes out 5.14 assists per set.¢ In the back row, junior Sarah Wroblicky leads the Ti-

gers with 4.10 digs per set. That mark ranks her seventh in the SEC. Bullock averages 3.41 digs per frame and ranks 15th in the conference.¢ Auburn Head Coach Rick Nold is in his second

season at the helm of the Tigers. After posting an 11-19 overall record last season, Nold’s overall mark at Au-burn is an even 28-28 entering the match.

SCOUTING LSU¢ LSU – the seven-time defending SEC West Cham-

pion – enters its Friday night match at No. 16 Florida in fourth place in its division with a 12-14 overall record and an 8-9 mark in league play. Last week, LSU beat Georgia in four and lost to Mizzou in straight sets¢ Prior to its loss at Missouri, LSU had won three straight

matches. LSU is 4-7 in true road matches this season.¢ LSU has led the Southeastern Conference all season

in one major statistical category, while hanging around the middle of the pack in many others. The Tigers lead the league with 17.05 digs per set. In SEC matches only, LSU ranks first with 18.35 digs per set, while UT is sec-ond in the category (17.32).¢ The Tigers ranks seventh in the conference in both

blocks per set (2.28) and assists per set (12.58), and come in at eighth in the league in kills per game (13.35).¢ Leading the Tigers offensively are Madie Jones

and Desiree Elliott. The duo ranks sixth and 10th in the SEC in kills per set, respectively. Jones is averaging 3.69, while Elliott is picking up an average of 3.49 per set. Elliott also ranks 15th in the conference in hitting percentage (.286).¢ Senior Meghan Mannari leads the squad defen-

sively and ranks second in the Sec with an average of 4.87 digs per game. At the net, freshman Khourtni Fears ranks fifth in blocks per set (1.06).
