B a r g a i n - h u n t e r s queued overnight in preparation for stores opening on Boxing Day, with thousands pouring through the doors from as early as 6am, breaking all previous Boxing Day shopping records. Forecasters predicted that more than £50m would have been spent in London’s West End at Bond Street, Regent Street and Oxford Street by closing time. Shoppers increased by 31.3% on Box-ing Day last year, with sales fuelled by tourists eager to

spend. The UK average foot-fall was up by 21.6%, the re-tailers’ body said. Flagship Selfridges reported its most successful first hour of trade ever, with £1.5 mil-lion melting the tills. Selfridg-es director of operations, Sue West, said handbags and menswear were among the items flying off the shelves. “Online sales have been great, but year-on-year people still want to experience the Box-ing Day sales,” she said. Department store John Lewis also announced a re-cord start to its online sale which began on Christmas Eve with hourly orders up

70% year on year. Pre-Christ-mas trading for the store saw sales of £157.8m, up 26.5% on the same period last year and breaking the £150m bar-rier for the first time. Man-aging director, Andy Street,

said: “To be announcing an-other record-breaking pre-Christmas week along with such a fantastic start to our online clearance is marvellous news.” The same story was being

told across the country, at Birmingham’s Bullring Shop-ping Centre, thousands were queuing from 12:30am with 350,000 shoppers passing through the doors over the next 24 hours. Manchester’s Trafford Centre had its big-gest Boxing Day sale in its history and drafted police in to help manage the crowds, over 20,000 waiting for the stores to open by 8am. The centre’s Gordon McKinnon said: “Many retailers have kept stock levels much tighter this year, so the sales will not be stretching on into January.” Bluewater shopping cen-tre in Kent reported 120,000 shoppers visited and queues

started forming at 1am. Retailers slashed prices and began trading early in a bid to entice shoppers and com-pete with online rivals offer-ing huge discounts. A strike by London tube drivers about bank holiday pay did not im-pact on the sales. Extra buses were drafted in to take shop-pers to the West End, as well as the Westfield shopping centres in Stratford, east London, and White City, west London, according to Trans-port for London. Jason Tyr-rell from the New West End Company said: “We were pre-pared for this strike and had coaches for staff. The shop-pers were out in force.”

editorialSo as 2012 draws to a close and we all prepare to make those New Year Resolutions that we may, or may not carry through to the second week of the New Year, we have taken some time to reflect on the big, mad and sad stories of the year. Such a lot can happen in one year and so much of it gets forgotten so I hope that John Sharples round up brings you some smiles and brings back some memories. The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school has

certainly started a war of words in America, starring our very own Piers Morgan. Our American cousins are calling for his deportation following his remarks during a recent interview. Love him or hate him, does he have a point? If guns and ammunition were not so freely available across the pond, would it lessen the atrocities we have become all too familiar with? Even celebrities are getting involved, filming a video calling on President Obama for some sort of gun control. Something must be done, but as many American citizens consider

it their constitutional right to “bear arms” it could be a long time before anything is resolved. I would like to take a further moment of your time and thank those of you who have written, emailed and telephoned over the past few months. I hope you are pleased with the way the paper has developed recently and thank you for your positive feedback. I look forward to hearing from, and meeting with you all in 2013, in the meantime, I wish you all a very happy and peaceful New Year. Lorna Eade

the shops may have been closed on Christmas Day but online retailers announced massive price cuts ahead of an expected onslaught of shoppers hitting the traditional Boxing Day sales. amazon’s uK website said it has seen sales on Christmas Day increase by 263% over the last five years. it expected this to be its busiest Christmas Day ever to date, partly due to the growth in home broadband and the popularity of tablets and smartphones. the retailer launched its traditional Boxing Day sale a day early, including clearance of-fers and “lightning deals” for a limited time and quantity of stock. trends seen on past Christmas Days on amazon include an 11am rush for last-minute gift cards, the spending of gift cards at midday and sofa surfing at 8.15pm. Amazon’s vice president of EU retail, Xavier Garambois, said: “The digital revolution has certainly played a part in this growth and Christmas Day is our biggest day of the year for

MP3 and Kindle book downloads, as many people are buying content from new devices that they have just received. It’s not just digital items though; we are seeing purchases of everything from baby products to women’s clothing rapidly growing on Christmas Day. Many customers are shopping on Christmas Day in a way that has previously only been seen in the retail industry on Boxing Day.” Furniture Village reported visits to its website on Christmas Day last year peaked at 25,000 at 4pm, with that figure in-creasing to 50,000 on Boxing Day, suggesting that the major-ity of customers researched products online before buying from their high street stores. Chris Webster, a spokesman for technology analyst Capgem-ini, said: “Online tills will be ringing all the way from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, including a massive £300m spent on Christ-mas morning itself. Christmas Day will see a surge in online sales as new tablets and smartphones are put through their paces and vouchers are cashed in for virtual goods such as movies and music.” Meanwhile, high street spending was “acceptable but not exceptional” during the Christmas period, according to the British Retail Consortium. No doubt the Boxing Day Frenzy will have improved the figures.

mayor Bermúdez, is threatening BBVA that Santa Cruz Ayuntamiento close the municipality’s official accounts with the bank unless it stops eight threatened evictions. The mayor, and finance councillor, Alberto Bernabé, have also demanded explanations from the bank as to why it has not complied with agreements adopted in November to resolve another three such cases of mortgage defaults due to un-employment. The mayor’s action comes as tents have been pitched outside both Bankia and BBVA in the capital, with the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca de Tenerife accus-ing the banks of deception in the case particularly of two of those affected who are trying to negotiate their way out of their situation. The action group say they won’t be mov-ing their camp even if it means seeing in the New Year on the street. Meanwhile, only one bank, Cajasiete Caja Rural has joined the mayor’s Mortgage Mediation Service.

Landslides in la Calzada, mud and roads flooded with water, this is the situation that residents of the area in the North of Tenerife had to dela with on Christmas Day. The in-tense overnight rains in La Orotava, Los Realejos and the Pu-erto de la Cruz, caused landslides forcing the partial closure of some roads. The TF-342, linking Los Realejos with la Guan-cha, had to be cut off to traffic overnight. The TF-333 be-tween la Orotava and Tigaiga was also closed. Several vehicles were trapped in mud overnight in San Felipe and Martianez.

more than 130 musicians gathered together at the Cine-Teatro Municipal de Santa Úrsula on December 21st and 22nd for the traditional Christmas concert. The extraordi-nary Christmas concert featured appearances from mem-bers of the Academy of music under the direction of Ernesto Beteta A.M.C. and Miguel Ángel Expósito Marrero. Pianos, violins, Clarinets, flutes, oboes, and guitars, amongst others played traditional Christmas songs. And both the youth and adult bands merged with the voices of the choir. More than 300 people were able to enjoy this spectacular concert.

gran hotel Bahia del Duque resort in Tenerife, has won 2013 Condé Nast Johansens Europe & Mediterranean Awards for Excellence. The hotel has been awarded for its ‘EMEA Annual Executive Meeting Proposal’. Conde Nast Johansens commented on Bahia del Duque’s “inspiration from tradi-tional turn of the 20th century Canarian architecture, be-ing that it is an exclusive complex comprising Corinthian col-umns, bell towers and vast blue pools – a real oasis of luxury.” The awards are based on responses from guest nomination forms, guest survey reports and regional inspector reports drawn from the hotels featured in Condé Nast Johansens most recent guides.

NEWS ON THE ROCK

at this time of year most of us are accus-tomed to giving, even if we struggle a little and cut back on a few luxuries in order to make the Christmas season special for our loved ones. yet due to the current ‘crisis’ many spanish fami-lies find themselves in a predicament which is unbelievably shocking to those of us used to the uK Benefit system. With spain’s poor social

system, the only way for many local fami-lies can survive whilst they continue to bat-tle against the failing economy is to hand their children into care albeit temporar-ily. When The Traveller Blues Band learnt of this awful situation, they decided to take action and raise mon-ey for the local children’s homes in Tenerife by do-nating money from their album sales and making col-lections at their gigs. “We felt we just had to

do something to help these kids and their parents. It is it hard to believe that it’s the only option left for them,” said Whiskey, front man of the band. “It’s a cra-zy world we live in, but this just shows how badly work-ing class families have been hit by the corruption of the banks and governments of this so called EU zone…” The band, alongside Help-ing Hands a registered charity in Tenerife, or-ganised a trip to the Pre-mier Bar in Amarilla Golf, where they had arranged a Christmas dinner and a visit from Santa Claus. The

children received a bag of presents from Santa, a de-licious, hot and filling meal and entertainment from the band. The band then handed over the money to Miriam of Helping Hands and explained how they had raised it. She sobbed as she received just short of 1000 Euros. Seeing the joy on the chil-dren’s faces was enough to know that ‘Every Little Does Count’ and if you would like to help in anyway, you can contact Helping Hands or the Traveller Blues Band di-rectly by visiting www.trav-ellerbluesband.com

the university of La Laguna (uLL) recycled 80 tons of light pack-aging, paper and car-tons in the past year thanks to the signing of an agreement with the company ecoem-bes, who are in charge of waste collection.

Since the start of the campaign the university has collected 68.10 tons of paper and cardboard and 12 tons of lightweight waste by placing 460 blue bins for paper and 414 yellow lightweight waste around various points on 5 campuses. To help man-

age the material collected two compactors have been located in the Campus de Guajara, and another pair in the Anchieta, to reduce the number of trips to trans-port the waste to the plant. The campaign has been developed in two phases. The first was initiated in

July 2011 on the Campus of Anchieta, Guajara, Santa Cruz and Rector. The sec-ond began in September 2011 with the placement of the containers at the Cen-tral Campus. The results highlights the effectiveness of sys-tem, because 72,71% of

material found in the yel-low bins was deposited by users of the University, a percentage which is above the average for Spain. As part of this continuous re-cycling program, a direct marketing campaign has been launched in which two actors are integrated with

students to explain the process and the correct way of recycling. The Uni-versity also held a confer-ence entitled ‘Waste Is Not Trash. Why it is so impor-tant to recycle?’ given by the environmental writer and journalist José Luis Gal-lego.

Christmas carols re-sounded round the Coral mar square on sunday 23rd December, accompanied by Chris on the organ. two sing-ers Liz and Catriona led the filled square send-

ing the joyful songs out over the surround-ing area. the congre-gation filled the lower square and spilled over into the upper level too. Pastor Bill was ably helped by the Sunday school children

in telling the Christmas story. Big Chris, a locally known en-tertainer, gave his testimony saying how Christ had come into his life. Pastor Bill wel-comed everyone to go into the church for mince pies, tea and coffee after the service. There was a church ser-

vice on Christmas Day and an invitation was extended to anyone who spent Christmas alone to join the church in a Christmas lunch. In the evening Silencio church goers joined the Inter-national Carol Service in Callao Salvaje to support the Callao

church. Translations and car-ols were in Spanish, French, German and Italian under the stars near the sea. From January the Silencio church congregation will be meeting at 10 am not 11am as exciting new things are happening in January con-

cerning planting a church in Playa de las Americas. Bill will be doing two services not one in the morning. It is good to see the church expanding to help fill the needs of both communities in Silencio and Las Americas. Pastor Bill’s con-tact number is 609 565 528

Tenerife Weekly - 28th December - 3rd January 2013 Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly6 GOOGle BUSineSS phOtOS tenerifegoogLe has recently introduced Business Photos. it uses the same technology as street View, it allows shops, restaurants and other business-es to provide virtual tours of their prem-ises. these tours are then shown in google maps and local results, providing offline busi-nesses with an op-portunity to drive footfall into their lo-cations. Francis Ortiz, a Spanish Photographer is the Google Trusted Photographer for the Canary Islands. The Eng-lish-speaking Photographer explained to Tenerife Weekly the benefits of having a Vir-tual Tour for your business on Google, the largest and most popular Search Engine in the world. On average, Ortiz can get a big location done in 90 min-utes, and a small, cafe-sized location in 30 minutes. Pro-viding that the business is well laid out, he can capture 30 to 40 panoramas per hour while on-site. A typical shoot starts with a few panoramas outside the location, to help bridge them

with the existing Street View nodes. From there, the pho-tographer will walk through the business, “keeping in mind how a human would move in the same space. We don’t jump through walls or hop over furniture (for the most part). The panoramic tour images are key to this product, and as such I put most of my effort into plan-ning and shooting them,” he said. He has had published over 100 businesses for Google Street View, Google

Maps and Google Plus locally around Tenerife, La Gomera and Lanzarote. The pricing is not ridicu-lous either from 120 Euros you can have a small bar or restaurant Virtual Tour, with several 360º Interactive pan-oramic images, connected to Google Street View Car where available, plus 10 or more high resolution photo-graphs which can be freely used for printing, advertising or websites. Google has established a

maximum price tag at 450 Euros per floor (up to 30 panoramic images or 300 sq metres) so anyone can af-ford to have a virtual tour for their business, also Ortiz emphasises that there are no recurrent charges or month-ly costs hidden, once done, it is there for ever. The virtual tours can be updated whenever you want, at a fraction of the original cost, making updating tours easy and reasonable, some shops and stores update

their tours every season as stock changes, these are only examples of thousands of marketing possibilities this new Google Service offer businesses in Tenerife. So now it is possible to bring your business to life with Street View technology: create a 360-degree, inter-active tour. Showcase all the details that your customers love, perfect for restaurants, shops, gyms and salons. With Business Photos, your customers can walk around,

explore, and interact with your business like never be-fore. Customers will be able to truly experience your busi-ness - just like being there! Even better news is that not only will these images appear on Google searches, Google Maps, and Google+ Local, but you can easily em-bed Street View on your own website and on social media pages. the Civil guard has dismantled an un-derground armoury in tenerife that pro-vided guns to an or-ganization dedicated to trafficking drugs between morocco and the Canary islands, in an operation in which its 18 members have been arrested. According to the direc-torate general of the Civil Guard, agents have been involved in six searches and retrieved 24 kilos of hashish, 16,000 euros, and 73 guns, some with the serial number erased. The operation began last September after the Guardia Civil discovered criminal ac-tivity of an organisation that regularly brought inflatable boats loaded with hashish to Tenerife. After monitoring the group, researchers un-covered a plan for a major stash of hashish to be deliv-ered to the northern coast of Tenerife. 15 members of the gang were arrested whist unloading 1,200 kilograms of hashish drugs off the boat. During the arrests, agents also seized two pistols which

were carried by two people responsible for transporting hashish to the distribution point. It was customary for mem-bers of the organisation to carry firearms for personal protection against possible theft of drugs by rival organi-zations. The weapons were purchased through a person who performed the func-tions of a gunsmith but with-out the proper administrative authorisation. The weapons were on occasion modified unused guns that could be used at a later date without leaving a trace. At the gunsmiths home, agents found 69 guns, si-lencers for revolvers, large amounts of ammunition of different calibre’s, lathes and steel tubes cut into cylinders all of which were destined for repair and modification. A large number of spent cartridges and metal plates showing signs impact were found in the basement of the house. The operation was devel-oped by specialists in the fight against organized crime by the Civil Guard (UCO), sup-ported by other units with the headquarters based in Tenerife.

In the ladies section Sonia Prieto Tinerfena finished her race in 1 hour, 27 minutes and

36 seconds beating Raquel Lora who came in second and Realejera Tere Linares who came third. The Board of Directors sent their sincere congratulations

to all the athletes for another fantastic marathon, the most prestigious and oldest Canar-ian achievement which is still rated as first class.

hot on the heels of hull Kingston rovers, tenerife is playing host to yet another training rugby League super team. this time it is the Warrington Wolves who are head-ing to their tenerife training base in Janu-ary.

They will spend a week here before the start of the 2013 Super League season as part of their final prepa-rations. After last year’s Australian adventure Wolves’ pre-sea-son preparations will have a familiar feel to them, as Tony Smith and his players return to the Canary Island base they have visited twice

before in 2010 and 2011. “We go from the 14th to the 21st to our usual camp in Tenerife,” said Smith. “They have first class facili-ties and we have had a num-ber of good pre-seasons there. We are familiar with it and feel at home there, so it has been good for our prep in the past and I expect it to be the same this year.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com Tenerife Weekly - 28th December - 3rd January 2013 9 Gone To The Stage In The SkyBy John sharplesso many famous names left us in 2012. there must be some great entertainment going on in heaven. Can you imagine the scramble for top billing?

British character actor Harry Fowler left us in January. He was 85 when he died. He was one of those faces that popped up on TV and film everywhere. He had played in 200 movies dur-ing his 60 year career and was in the Movies “Doctor in Clover” and “George and Mildred”. He was awarded an MBE. Bob Holness will be playing Blockbusters with the angels. Bob, who was born in South Africa, had presented on both radio one and radio two and had been the host of the game show “Take a letter”. He became something of a cult figure when blockbusters took off and many urban myths sprung up about him, including that he was the man who played saxophone on Gerry Rafferty’s Baker. The best show in heaven this year will be one “Hell” of a live concert. with names such as Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Davy Jones and Robin Gibb headlining. Etta James will bring

a touch of class to the proceedings along with Andy Williams. All great artistes in their own right. Now that would be a great show to see, although, I’ll pass on tickets if you don’t mind! I still find it hard to accept that a giant talent like Whitney Houston has passed on. Although her lifestyle had been so erratic over the last

few years, we were given the impression that she was get-ting it together at last. The saddest moment for me was seeing Bobby Brown hanging around outside the church. What a sorry state of affairs. Can you imagine the concert though? I will always love you by Whitney and Enough is Enough with Donna Summer as a duet. Great classic songs from Etta and Andy and some Bee Gee magic from Robin Gibb.

Joe South, who had hits in in the 1960s and 1970s with ‘Games People Play’ and ‘Walk

A Mile In My Shoes,’ passed away after suffer-ing a heart attack in Georgia on Sept. 5, 2012. His real name was Joseph Alfred Souter. He had worked as a session musician for Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel and also wrote tracks for several artists. Clive Dunn will be keeping everyone in fits of laughter as he stands at the Gates of St Pe-ter telling everyone ..... “Don’t Panic” and “They don’t like it, up ‘em”. Clive served in World War II and spent four years as a German prisoner. He said that his role in ‘Dad’s Army’ was his revenge. Dad’s army was a big hit from ‘68 until ‘77. The bumbling Home Guard platoon was supposed to be protecting the village of Walmington-on-Sea from German attack, al-though, the village would probably have been safer with no protection at all! If Clive isn’t your comedy cup of tea, then what about comic legend Eric Sykes who most

recently played a part in the Harry Potter se-ries. Many actors climbed the stairway to the stars over the year. Oscar winner Ernest Bor-gnine, Larry Hagman, Andy Griffiths, Herbert Lom and Geoffrey Hughes to name just a few. Of particular sadness to me was Bill Tarmey who played the part of Jack Duckworth in Cor-onation Street. Jack and Vera were the comic element of the street for a number of years and his departure from the street was one of the most memorable scenes in recent years. Nobody could have played John Coffey in The Green Mile like actor Michael Clarke Dun-can. He was born in 1957 in Chicago and Raised by his single mother on Chicago’s South Side, He grew up against drugs and booze and worked hard at school. His dream was to be-come a famous actor. When he finally landed a small role, he was working as a bodyguard. His part in the movie Armageddon led to his breakthrough perfor-mance in The Green Mile. Bruce Willis called director Frank Darabont, suggesting Michael for the part of convict John Coffey. He got the role, and garnered critical acclaim as well as Awards and Nominations, including an Acad-emy Award Nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He suffered a heart attack on July 13 and died aged 54. No doubt, Neil Armstrong and Patrick Moore will be discussing the mysteries of the earth as they look at us from that great place in the sky through a giant celestial telescope. What a shame they can’t build a rocket and send these talented people back to us!

Wanna Fight?

John Pacella of Illinois, USA ended up in a jam when he picked a fight with a policeman. John actually called up the emergency services at four in the morning and said that he wanted a fight with the police. The police were sent around to him at home as the call sounded odd to the operator. When they got there John started pushing the po-lice and ended up on a charge of aggravated battery. Looking at his mug shot, he was obviously

Betty Russell, a 76 year old woman from Alabama in USA, slept through a tornado that damaged most of her home. The tornado cre-ated a massive hole right above her bed, but that night, she had fallen asleep whilst watch-ing television on the sofa. Betty collects statues of angels and she believes that they kept her safe through the storm. She only woke up from her slumbers when she heard the emergency services sirens as they came to her rescue. “I didn’t know I was that heavy a sleeper,” she said. “It had caved in the south side of my house and honestly I didn’t hear it. I cannot believe I didn’t hear it but I didn’t.”

emu on the run An Emu decided to make a break for free-dom. It was seen running up and down the street, trying to get into people’s houses be-fore it was caught. Local residents of the street assisted police with the arrest of the bird by trying to catch it in their homes. It finally surrendered to ar-rest at 8am.

The police thought that the emergency call was a wind up, but on arrival they could see the bird trying to break into the houses. When it couldn’t get into one house, it would move on to the next!

WhiCh Way to turn A Belgian man call Jan, who married an au pair called Monica from Indonesia, 19 years ago, found out that his wife was in fact a man who had had a sex change operation. He said that he had found out this year that his wife had originally been a man. He told the local newspaper that he felt as though he had been assaulted. It wasn’t easy for him to get her into Belgium as the Belgian courts had doubts about the authenticity of her paperwork, but she managed to get in nevertheless. He said that she was an attractive woman and had no male traits at all. He is in the pro-cess of annulling the marriage.

A video of the burger’s flight has been uploaded onto YouTube. The burger was sprayed with lacquer to protect it during its journey and it was then attached to the balloon along with a video camera It made it to an altitude of almost 19 miles before the balloon burst and the burger hur-tled back to Earth. The burger was found 130 miles away, up a tree just outside Boston. Both were still intact.

LaZy DaD Lazy Dad, Colin Furze from Lincolnshire built the world’s fastest pram so he didn’t

have to push it! The engine on his son’s silver metal push-chair enables it to reach a speed of 50mph, although he never takes it up to top speeds when his son Jake is inside. The pram has a 125cc motorbike engine and took him four weeks to design. He built the pram so that he could be considered for the Guinness book of records. He had to make it go faster than 30mph, which he did easily.

going BaCKWarDs In May, 33-year-old Gerrard Doherty defend-ed his title at the UK backwards running cham-pionship. He won by over a minute. He said that he was thrilled to keep hold of his title and chuffed to have beaten his per-sonal best. Gerrard started running backwards when out jogging on a Sunday morning and he turned around to avoid the glare of the sun. He said that people usually take a second look at him as he runs past. “I’ve only fallen over three times since I started running back-wards”.

By John sharplesFiFty shades of grey was a mas-sive selling novel. although it was released in 2011, it became a major seller throughout 2012 and sold more copies than harry Potter and the Deathly hallows. many felt that it was a poorly written book and the critics gave very mixed reviews for it. however….. almost every woman managed to find time to dip into the world of Chris-tian grey. Figures so far suggest that the novel has sold over 5.2 million copies in the uK alone and well over 65 million copies world-wide.

The Vauxhall Ampera/Chevrolet Volt won the 2012 European Car of the Year award. The car won the award by a clear 49 votes ahead of second place, the Volkswagen Up. Third placed was the Ford Focus. The Ampera is a stylish way to save on fuel and cut emissions and still enjoy performance driving. It brings clean, eco-motoring to the road. It is free of the usual restrictions of bat-teries and offers a lively electric performance and a range of up to 360 miles. As John Travol-ta would say… “It’s electrifying!” Prices start at around 30,000 pounds. The biggest selling mobile phone of 2012 in the UK was the Apple iPhone 4S. It is prob-ably fastest smartphone on the market at the moment. Samsung’s Galaxy is in second place and many are growing to prefer the Samsung phones. Time will tell when new models appear in 2013. MTV have published their list of the most watched pop videos of 2012. Gotye with “Somebody That I Used To Know” came out as top of the charts with Cheryl Cole and” Call My Name” in second place and third place was Jes-sie J with “Domino” The Rich List, which is published by the Sun-day Times put Lakshmi Mittal at the top of the list with a fortune of £12.7 Billion. He and his family have their roots in the steel indus-try. In second place with 12.3 billion pounds was Alisher Usmanov whose business is also steel. It looks like steel is the way to a fortune! Third place on the list was Roman Abramovich

antonio Banderas is spending Christmas with his family skiing in Colarado. the actor, the voice of Puss in Boots in the movie ‘shrek’ did not hesitate to put on his own show on the slopes. Aspen, famous for its qual-ity skiing, was an ideal showcase for Banderas and he did not disappoint, executing a series of moves which left onlookers open mouthed. It was not only his skiing that impressed eve-ryone, he was dressed for the occasion in an extraordinary bright orange mono ski suit, unfortunately making him look like a prison detainee rather than anything else. But no-one ever just goes ski-ing in Aspen, not when there are some serious shopping op-portunities available. Banderas was seen leaving Ralph Lauren and Loro Piana laden with bags, no doubt relieved that he got his last minute pressies in time. While the actor enjoyed some quiet time, he was later joined by wife, actress Melanie Griffith and daughters, Dakota Johnson and Stela de el Carmen who opted to enjoy après ski rather than the real thing.

the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the olympic games managed to lift the spirits of an otherwise bedraggled Britain. From gold painted post boxes to olympic gold medals, smiling faces ruled the summer months. however, the news is rarely good and here are some of the things that will also define 2012.

January The Costa Concordia Cruise Ship ran aground with 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew known to have been aboard, 32 people are missing or dead. The Captain is charged with responsibility as it is alleged that he took the ship too close to land. Although the ship’s sinking was gradual, its complete loss of power, and its closeness to the shore in calm sea, an order to abandon ship wasn’t issued until an hour after impact. International maritime law states that all passengers should be evacuated within 30 minutes of an order to abandon ship. The evacuation of Costa Concordia took more than six hours and not all the people were evacuated.

in a small town near madrid, 130 people are celebrating win-ning spain’s famous lottery, el gordo, this year celebrat-ing its 200th anniver-sary. the cava flowed for those who had grouped together and picked “the Fat one”, worth a total of four million euros, many of whom are workers at the same factory in alcalá de henares. It is a working-class neighbourhood with many immigrants, those who had the winning number on their typical $26 ticket get a return of $528,000. Local media reported that one man bought ten of the $26 tickets and gave them to his family, which is now $5.2 million richer. One of the winners strug-gled to take the news in: “200 000 euros: a tenth!,” he said. “We did not know we won until this morning. I don’t know what to say.” The shopkeeper who sold the winning ticket, failed to buy one for himself

said he was happy for his friends anyway. “My wife told me I did not get it. Next time. The fact that people I know won, for me, it is already a triumph,” he said.

El Gordo winners also could be found in 15 prov-inces across Spain. Spain’s cash-strapped government pocketed a billion euros from ticket sales. A change in the law

means that from next year lottery winners will pay 20% in tax. The annual lottery, nick-named The Fat One is billed as the world’s richest lot-tery. One in nine Span-

iards is estimated to have bought a ticket. In the deep economic crisis with 25% unemployment, Span-iards spent 8% less on lot-tery tickets this year. The draw, which took place

in Madrid’s opera house, was televised live across Spain because so many people play. Every Spaniard knows the tune the chil-dren sing when pulling out the winning number.

an essex girl who moved to mainland spain to run a bar is to be featured on Primetime tV in the new year. Originally from Waltham Cross, Claire Tyson, aged 40, couldn’t speak a word of Spanish when she moved to Alicante five years ago, to live her dream: “I have always lived in Waltham Abbey, since I was born,” said Miss Tyson. “My mum and dad were having a house built in Spain and Dad said my boyfriend and I could have the house to live in, rent free. So I rented out my house in Waltham Cross and we moved over there.” After only a year, Miss Tyson and her boyfriend were given the chance to take over Rayz bar, a popular expat bar in the heart of a busy community in Guardamar. They couple took the plunge, but they split up after only two

months and Miss Tyson was left alone to manage the business. Not easy as her only previous bar experience was a short stint pulling pints in a local pub back home: “I don’t know how I did it. I think it was because I’d split up with him. Everyone was expecting me to crumble. I think I totally shocked every-one.” For the next four years the business went from strength to strength, the restaurant was catering for 100 covers a night. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she admits, “It was just get-ting busier and busier.” In March Miss Tyson was asked to take part in Trouble Abroad, a documentary programme which follows the lives of British ex-pats living and working in Eu-rope. She agreed, hoping it would boost her business, the television crew then spent nine days following every aspect

of her daily life. However by June the stress of running Rayz took its toll and she returned back to the U.K. “I left without saying goodbye to anyone. I had so many customers. It would have broken my heart, they were like my family,” she said. “If I’m totally honest I probably should have gone back home after 18 months, it’s not the dream people think it is.” The programme, Trouble Abroad will be shown on ITV1 on Thursday January 10 at 9pm. and features Miss Tyson on her return to Waltham Abbey where, after six months off, she now wants to start a new life again: “I’m single and I’ve come back and I’ve got to start my life again,” she said. “Basically it’s just the sunshine, that’s all it is. I could have been living in Waltham Abbey - but with sunshine. “I did well in my bar, but there’s no place like home.”

Brothel Evacuates 300

300 PeoPLe had to be evacuated from a megabrothel in La Jonquera, north east spain after a car bomb was left in the car park. A masked man got out of a vehicle at Paradise, one of Spain’s largest legal brothels. He was brandishing a weapon and shouted that he was leav-

ing behind a car with a bomb in the back. He then sped off with four other people, also wearing masks, in another vehicle. According to a regional ministry spokesman, it took members of a bomb squad several hours to deactivate the device. He spoke on con-dition of anonymity in keep-ing with ministry rules. Many of the town’s residents be-

lieve those responsible for the bomb were gang mem-bers involved in a turf war. A previous attack earlier this month was reported by local media; two small explo-sive devices, one of which in fact exploded, were thrown at the brothel from a car, and many of the town’s 3,000 residents think the bombs are more evidence of gang turf wars.

According to CNC, all of these mobile operators hold a monopoly on the short message’s service on their own network. Prices of voice calls have been controlled and dropped over the years, SMS have not been regulat-ed between 2000 and 2009. JeWiSh heritAGe pArtnerShipthe spanish network of Jewish Quarters (red de las Juderías), working with google, this week announced a joint project to pro-mote the lost Jewish heritage of 24 span-ish cities, from Ávila to tudela. 15 years of work by the network of Jewish Quarters, promoting the long-dormant Jewish his-tory that saturates spain was presented at Centro sefarad- is-rael in madrid by the Pathways of sefarad (Caminos de sefarad) project. Until recently, all that was left of Sephardi Spain were old street names; now these neighbourhoods are alive with museums, guided walks, restored synagogues and rediscovered, long lost docu-ments. The partnership between Google and the Networks provides Internet visits to once-Jewish cities, with vir-tual guided walks and history lessons via the Caminos de Sefarad website, which com-bines Red de las Juderías re-search and up to the minute Google technology. Google Free Expression manager William Echikson visit to Segovia provided the impetus for the project: “I saw signs in Segovia pointing to the synagogue and mu-seum. I didn’t realize Spain had so much Jewish history; I thought it was just Granada

and Toledo,” Echikson said during the inauguration at Centro Sefarad-Israel. “I im-mediately got in touch with Red de las Juderías and two weeks later Assumpció Hosta Rebés (secretary general of the network) was in Brussels to work on a common project with Google,” he said. “We have had the best partners,” said Echikson, about Hosta Rebés and her team. “They have used Google’s tools, even better than many Goog-le engineers. They have done an unbelievably great job.” Google technology, using maps and layers, lets Red de las Juderías to organize his-torical content, some of it dating back to the third cen-tury CE . The website, www.redjuderias.org, visits Span-ish cities including Barcelona, Girona, Segovia and Oviedo. With Google’s Street View visitors can travel down the alleyways of yesteryear and today. A lot of the documen-tation online relives medi-eval Jews, what they bought, what they sold, even if they were evicted from their homes. The Spanish government has been welcomed the pro-ject by fitting into the new branding of Spain as a cultural and historical treasure trove, which, with Google’s technical support, will be able to reach a much larger market than ever before. It also fits in with the latest trends in Spanish public diplomacy. José Angel Lopez Orrin from the Span-ish Foreign Ministry, in charge of “branding” for Spain, said at the ceremony that it was

“a magnificent contribution” the brand. “It opens panora-mas of knowledge, and we all know knowledge is the cornerstone of tolerance and living together,” he said. “To recover part of Spain, to complete the image of Spain. Not only for Jews. To rehabilitate, or recompose in a way, some sort of historic mistake.” Hosta Rebés said the group was “very excited” about the joint project. “It combines heritage, tolerance, univer-sality and shared work,” she said. “Spain is a county that,

having lived through a dicta-torship, has had little respect for those who are different. We are not used to sharing public spaces. We who live day to day in these Jewish herit-age cities understand the need for more information. We have begun to program conferences, concerts and courses to introduce our var-ied culture.” Bárbara Navarro, director of Public Policies and Institu-tional Affairs of Google Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece, praised the partnership and said it would contribute

greatly to people’s under-standing of “what happened years ago,” to “piquing peo-ple’s curiosity” and toward the “democratization of the access to culture” and the re-newal of “past connections.” Luis Casado, chairman of Red de las Juderías and mayor of Tudela, spoke of the added value of rediscovering “our abandoned Jewish heritage and culture. We have taken on the aim of teaching it, of making it a reference point for Spain,” Casado said. “To teach people who their neigh-bours were.” He also called

the project a “tipping point.” “Many Sephardim left Spain. Now with hi-tech they can come back, visit their cities, their histories, the person-alities of yore,” he explained. “Anyone from anywhere can learn about their roots or sim-ply learn history.” He added that Google had been “very philanthropic” regarding the project. “It has allowed us to present our past as we have never before been able to do. We open a window through which Jews can get to know about the recovery of this chapter in history.”

CyCliSt WinS piGleta British cyclist has won a live piglet as a trophy for winning a race. Chris Bartlett, from ipswich, was competing in a race in huercal overa, spain. the 26-year-old pro-fessional cyclist was using the race as part of his winter training schedule and had no idea what the win-ner’s prize would be until he stepped up onto the podium. “There’s nothing like a com-petitive race to keep your fitness levels up, so when I saw the race advertised, I entered. I had no idea what

the prize would be. After I’d won and the official handed me the pig, I said, ‘What am I supposed to do with it?’ He said: ‘Eat it!’” The prize is given tradition-ally to serve as part of the winners Christmas meal, but Bartlett decided to save the animal. He persuaded Ollie Watts, English owner of his training camp Kinetic PB, to keep the pig as a mascot, and she has been given the name ‘Lucky Rapha’. Watts said: “Lucky is already a big hit with the athletes staying at the camp, they touch her for luck every morning. She has to be the luckiest piglet alive, and we are delighted to have helped save her from the chop.”

The Queen has been criticised in the past for not spending her cash on home grown soil, it is thought she went abroad in an effort to shop unnoticed

while making her choices The Queen has also been criticised for staying at Clar-idges in Mayfair for the ridicu-lous cost of 2,000 Euros per night, so she chose to slum it on this visit and stayed in the cheap and cheerful 380 Euros per night Melia White House, just off Regent’s Park.

2012 LooKs set to be the wettest on re-cord with around 100 flood warnings cur-rently in place. home-owners in the south West and north West of the country who have already cleaned up after recent flood-ing have been warned to expect heavy rain over the weekend. The start of the year proved to be the driest since the infa-mous summer of 1976 follow-ing three dry winters. Some reservoirs were less than half-full and ground water levels were unusually low. However, Isobel Lang, Sky News weath-er forecaster, said: “Condi-tions changed rather unbe-lievably through April, with a switch to significantly wetter weather as the jet stream

was positioned further south than usual, driving in a suc-cession of Atlantic fronts and depressions.” The wet summer that fol-lowed was the wettest re-corded for a century, and although ground water and river levels recovered, the Environment Agency and the Met Office raised concerns that flooding was increasingly likely later in the year. It took very little to tip the balance and late September and No-vember saw significant flood-ing. More followed in the run up to Christmas as mild, south westerly winds from the At-lantic brought both warmth and torrential downpours. The wettest year on record so far is 2000 which saw more than 1,300mm of rain. In 2012, rainfall has already ex-ceeded the 1981-2010 annual average of around 1,150mm, and is far greater than the

950mm seen in 2010. With the wet weather set to continue, National Rail warned train passengers to expect

further disruption, while First Great Western warned people not to travel because of line problems in Devon and Corn-wall. Late-running engineer-ing work added to the misery, with no trains between Lon-don Paddington, Heathrow Airport and Reading, delays at Birmingham New Street and hold-ups between East Mid-lands Parkway, Leicester and Peterborough. Meanwhile, a monkey sanc-tuary in Looe, Cornwall, ap-pealed for help after its premises were wrecked by wet and windy weather. A large tree was felled, and ex-perts believe the death of a 10-month-old capuchin at the centre from tetanus may be linked to the floods. “We’re hoping (next year) doesn’t get any worse,” said Claire Turnbull, education officer at Looe Monkey Sanctuary.

thunDerBirDs crea-tor gerry anderson has died at the age of 83. anderson who also created Captain scar-let, stingray, Joe 90 and space:1999 died peacefully in his sleep on Boxing Day, he had suffered from demen-tia for many years. Chairman of the Fanderson fan club, Nick Williams said: “To those who met him Gerry was a quiet, unassuming but determined man. His desire to make the best films he could drove him and his talented teams to innovate, take risks, and do everything necessary to produce quite inspirational works. Gerry’s legacy is that he inspired so many people and continues to bring so much joy to so many millions of people around the world.” Fanderson is planning to pay a full tribute to him at the FAB 74 event in March 2013. Anderson had been diag-nosed with mixed dementia two years ago and his condi-

tion had worsened over the past six months. He moved into a care home in Octo-ber, having spent time with his family choosing the right place for him to spend his fi-nal years. He remained inter-ested and involved in the film industry, until recently, and he was always keen to re-visit some of his earlier successes using the latest technology available. His last credit as a producer was in 2005 on New Captain Scarlet, a CGI-animated re-im-agining of his 1967 Superma-rionation series, which pre-miered on in the UK. Extra Special Christmas

partythere was plenty of cause for celebration at the southmead hospital centre for a special Christmas party. the uK’s “best iVF centre in the nhs” is celebrating as 750 babies, con-ceived at the centre, enjoy their very first Christmas. The Bristol Centre for Re-productive Medicine (BCRM) produced 450 live babies in 2012 using IVF treatment and another 300 babies with the use of other fertility treatments, either surgery or hormone therapy. New parents Steven and Natasha Watts had tried for a baby for six years, describ-ing the process as “heart-breaking”, as those around them had successful preg-nancies. “We both so badly wanted to be parents - it was really hard.” They were offered a new fertility treatment known as ICSI (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection). This more delicate and accurate form

of IVF was successful and Natasha gave birth to healthy pair of twins, Olivia and Matthew. “This is our family now - it’s complete. What more could you ask for?” Lee Booth and Marie Black were left feeling “devas-tated” after discovering their chances of conceiving were unlikely. They spent 18 months receiving help from the centre which resulted in their daughter, Grace. Lee explained: “We conceived on a frozen cycle and the chances of that are quite slim so we just thought get it out the way and we could focus on the next cycle. So it was quite a surprise when we found out it had worked.” Marie admitted she had been up in the night to take a pregnancy test. “I did a test, expecting it to be neg-ative. I said to Lee ‘Are there two lines on that?’ I just couldn’t believe it. I think I did 10 tests in one week!” The couple are now consid-ering donating some of Ma-rie’s eggs as a gift to other hopeful-mothers-to-be that can spend up to five years

waiting for a donor. Valentine Akande, centre director and head consult-ant for fertility services at the BCRM, has seen the chances for couples with fertility problems increase over the years and believes there is good cause to be optimistic about further developments in the field. He said: “At the centre we offer blastocyst transfer when we grow the embryo in the lab beyond what is normally possible and this has improved success rates remarkably. Success rates can only get better. We’re not yet at perfection but hopefully at some stage in the future we’ll be in excess of 70%. I’m very proud of the team here. We are the best NHS IVF hospital in the UK and there’s virtually no category of infertility that we’re not able to approach or treat.” Mr Akande said: “At this time of year, which is all about loved ones; it is great to know that we’re helping parents start a longed-for family. It’s a wonderful privi-lege.”

Shark Tank Explodes In Shopping CentreuP to 16 people were hurt after a 33-ton aquarium containing sharks exploded at a shopping centre in the Chinese city of shang-hai. CCtV pictures cap-tured the moment the giant tank burst, sending shards of bro-ken glass and fish fly-ing into the crowd. a man, who was taking photographs of the aquarium when it ex-ploded, was swept away by debris. shop-pers, store assistants and security staff were also hurt as they were hit by pieces of 15cm-thick acrylic glass. Three lemon sharks and dozens of small fishes and turtles, also in the tank were killed, according to reports.

Police have begun an inves-tigation after the tank burst without warning. “I was just walking by and heard the explosion of this water tank. I heard a bang, and then water flushed out,” said an unnamed passer-by. “A cosmetics counter collapsed. The shop assistant was pulled out by other people,” said an-other unidentified witness. “According to experts’ pre-

liminary investigation, the main cause of the incident was that the material used to make the aquarium ruptured under low temperatures af-ter long-time use.” Aid a safe-ty expert. The Orient shopping cen-tre says it has no plans to rebuild the aquarium which had become a popular attrac-tion since being installed two years ago.

BeiJing has a new club; it is owned by a scottish whisky house and is selling the spirit for a staggering £200,000 a bottle. Johnnie Walker house is described by Diageo, who is backing the new venture, as “the world’s largest embassy for luxury scotch whisky, providing consumers with bespoke experiences to immerse themselves into the world of whisky and Johnnie Walker”. it is even designed to look like a London club with whisky bottles lining the walls and copper covered floors. The opening night of the four-storey emporium to Scotch was an epic affair. It featured everything Scottish, and then some; bagpipes, kilts and the occasional Scotsman mixing with Beijing’s mega-rich and A-list celebrities just a stone’s throw from the infamous Tiananmen Square. Apparently, the Chinese love whisky and a wealthy Chinese

will pay anything for it. “The starting price for a bottle of Johnnie Walker Scotch through the Johnnie Walker House is $3000,” Gilberte Ghostine, Diageo’s Asia-Pacific President. “It starts at $3000 a bottle and goes up to $300,000 a bottle. And people are paying that.” The guests can even have their own bespoke blend made. Diageo’s investment in China makes perfect sense: “80% of Chinese millionaires are below 45 years old. It’s a younger profile than in the States, where only 35% of their millionaires are below 45,” Mr Ghostine explains. He added: “The Chinese have an interest in brands with real heritage, history, provenance, craftsmanship and real substance. And that is exactly what we have.” Jim Beveridge, is Johnnie Walker’s master blender, a Scottish chemist turned whisky connoisseur who does the blending for the millionaires. “The whiskies used for Johnnie Walker Black Label were distilled 12 years ago and I wouldn’t have dreamed back then that they would now be consumed in this way in this kind of market,” he said. 40% of international spirit imports into China. Combined with the fact that they have the money to buy the best, and the result for the Scottish and UK economy

is extremely positive. Mr Ghostine said: “It is definitely great for Scotland. Today the Scotch whisky industry is very important for the UK. “Every second £134 is being

generated by Scotch whisky for the UK and the potential is huge.” There is a big correlation between Gross Domestic Product growth in emerging markets and

Scotch whisky. “The Scotch whisky category is 50% of international spirits market in the whole Asia-Pacific region, and so the potential is very big.”

Carol services, pantomime and sporting com-petitions were also held at many of the bases. At Lashkar Gah the main operating base, soldiers took part in the Lash Dash, a Christmas Day fun run with priz-es for the best costumes. Senior-ranking officers kept up with up with Army tradition by serving squaddies tea and coffee on Christmas morning.Thousands of balloons, crackers, party poppers and hats had been ordered and around 130 tons of Christmas post was been delivered to Camp Bastion in the week be-fore Christmas ready to be given out among the bases. Troops will also share the 23,500 mince pies and 40,000 After Eight mints flown in for the day. Major Mark Yates, 40, from Manchester, who serves with The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, 1st Battalion, (1 Lancs), had a cameo role in the pantomime production of Aladdin in Lashkar Gah. “We’re all away from our families but we want to make sure we remember Christmas as it is a link with home,” he said. “Many of us have young chil-dren and would probably have gone to see a pantomime at this time of year. It’s been a bit of fun between work, but not at the cost of any of our operations.”

British troops stationed at Camp Bastion in afghanistan have sent Christmas mes-sages back home to their loved ones. Soldiers serving with the 21 Engineer Regiment wished family and friends a happy festive sea-son, before celebrating with a traditional Christ-mas lunch and dinner. Lance Corporal Kane Hollings said: “Big shout out to all my family, my friends, my little dog Bella. I’m sorry I can’t be home for Christmas, but I hope you have a good time without me.” Corporal David Allan said: “I’d just like to say Merry Christmas to all my friends and family back home. My mum, my dad, and especially my beautiful wife Cheryl, I miss you and love you and I can’t wait to see you in January.”

mariano rajoy, Prime minister of spain made a surprise visit to afghanistan to meet President hamid Karzai and visit nato headquarters ahead of the Christmas cel-ebrations. Accompanied by Defense Minister Pedro Morenes, they arrived in Kabul on Sat-urday for talks with Karzai and to celebrate Christmas celebrations with the Span-ish forces. This is the Prime Ministers first visit to the war-torn country since he

came to power a year ago. After visiting NATO headquarters in Kabul and meeting the Spanish forc-es stationed there, Rajoy headed to Herat in eastern Afghanistan, where there is a Spanish logistics base, be-fore heading on to the Qala i Naw base in the northeast. British Prime Minister David Cameron also made a surprise visit to British troops in Afghanistan, hav-ing breakfast with them be-fore flying to Oman. Camer-on announced earlier in the week that he would cut the number of the forces in Af-

ghanistan by almost a half of the present 9,000 by the next year. The United States have claimed that the war in Af-ghanistan will end in 2014. The US-led foreign forces will, reportedly, prepare for

a full handover of security affairs to Afghan forces by the end of 2014. How-ever, US President Barack Obama and Karzai signed a strategic deal in May, which provides a framework for a post-2014 USA role in

Afghanistan. The deal provides aid, advisers, and support for Afghan forces for 10 years after the ex-pected departure of for-eign forces. The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan

in 2001 as part of the “war on terror.” The invasion subsequently removed the Taliban from power. Inse-curity still rages across the country, despite the pres-ence of thousands of US-led forces.

the hillsborough disaster tribute sin-gle has become the Christmas number one. The Justice Collective’s version of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, known as the Hillsborough disaster tribute, sold more than 269,000 copies, far outsell-ing X Factor winner James Arthur’s debut single, Im-possible, by 45,000, accord-ing to figures from the Of-ficial Charts Company. Earlier in the week, Arthur had posted to Twitter urg-ing his followers to make the Hillsborough tribute song this year’s festive number one. He tweeted: “Platinum single baby! Not a bad start :) thanks to all who bought it now make sure the Hills-borough tune is number 1!! #LOVE” After the chart was offi-cially announced, he tweet-ed: “He ain’t heavy he’s my brother the deserved Xmas number 1. Beautiful song and a very worthy cause. Bless all affected by the dis-aster #LOVE” The Hillsborough track, featuring, amongst others, Robbie Williams, Sir Paul Mc-Cartney and Spice Girl Mel C, is being sold to help pay for the legal costs of the fami-

lies of the 96 victims of the 1989 stadium disaster. The Government has waived VAT on the charity single. Chairwoman of the Hills-borough Families Support Group (HFSG), Margaret As-pinall, said it was “brilliant news” adding: “The families will be delighted. We haven’t had very good Christmases for a long time, so this is an extra gift. It’s obvious that it’s got a lot of support and they’ve got the message across to everybody. It’s tru-ly amazing. I’d like to thank everybody who participated in making the record and the people who bought it.” As well as the Justice Col-lective and James Arthur’s singles, there were several other songs in the running for this year’s Christmas top spot. Those included Psy’s international smash hit Gangnam Style and another internet hit, One Pound Fish by East End market trader Shahid Nazir, which went vi-ral last summer. The video of his One Pound Fish has been watched more than 6.5 mil-lion times on YouTube and charted at 29, while Gang-nam Style reached number six. The Pogues’ and Kirsty Mc-Coll’s hit Fairytale Of New York has re-entered the Of-ficial Christmas Singles Chart

Top 20 every year for the past seven years, this year it reached number 12. The seasonal number one spot has been dominated by reality TV contestants since

2002, the competitions end in time for the winner to release a single. The trend began with Popstars: The Rivals, but since 2005 win-ners of The X Factor have

topped the Christmas chart five times. The pattern was finally broken in 2009 when an internet campaign saw Rage Against The Machine’s single Killing In The Name

outselling Joe McElderry. X Factor winner Matt Cardle topped the charts again in 2010, however in 2011 The Choir winners Military Wives were number one.

Lost, Blind Dog Makes It Home

a Dog that the fam-ily raised from an animal-shelter puppy went miss-ing during a snowstorm in alaska on December 13. the family never expected to see it again, but it has been returned home, safe and sound. Blind and alone in Alaska winter temperatures that dipped 40 de-grees below zero, the lost eight-year-old dog didn’t really stand a chance, but after walking 10 miles to the edge of a local dog yard, Abby the brown-and-white mixed breed was found and returned to her owners, a family that includes two boys and one girl, all under the age of 10. “It’s a miracle, there are no other words to describe it,” said owner McKenzie Grapengeter, emotion choking her voice and tears coming

to her eyes. “We never expected to have her to be returned safe and alive.” Local vet Mark May had come across the dog while running his own dog team but did not stop to pick her up: “It ran with us for about a mile on the way home before she fell off the pace, but I had a big dog team so I couldn’t grab it,” he said. “I said, ‘boy I hope it finds somebody’s house’.” The next day, the dog turned up at Mr May’s house. “Eve-rybody just assumed it was some kind of scaredy-cat, but there it was in front of the door in our dog lot and it was blind,” Mr May said. “It was sitting there, so I picked it up and brought it in.” To his surprise, the dog had no signs of frostbite: “No frozen ears, no frozen toes, she’ll probably go back home and it’ll be business as usual. She’s no worse for wear but has had quite an adven-ture,” he said.

it is going to be the best Christmas ever for Westley grey, who lives near greenock in inverclyde. the 50-year-old is looking forward to speak-ing to his father on Christmas Day for the very first time. he had never met his father Westley moorehead until october this year when he flew to the united states. Mr Grey and his twin broth-er David started searching for Mr Moorehead after their mother Thomasina died. All they knew was that he had served in the US Navy. In the

early 1960s Mr Moorehead had been stationed at Holy Loch in Argyll and Bute, which was a US nuclear submarine base during the Cold War. He met Thomasina while stationed there, but was sent to the Caribbean during the Cuban missile crisis, and then onto Vietnam. However, af-ter he had left, Thomasina discovered she was pregnant with twins, and had no way of contacting Mr Moorehead, who had no idea he had fa-thered the boys until they made contact with him. David Grey travelled alone to Texas to meet his father, now aged 84, and discov-ered that he and his brother have three stepsisters and a stepbrother they had known

nothing about. Westley Grey, who has learning difficulties and lives in sheltered accom-modation, held fundraisers to pay for his flight to the US, that money, along with a donation from the Quarriers charity allowed him to travel to the US to see his father, who lives in Tennessee, for

the first time. He has now scheduled a Skype call on Christmas Day. “It’s been the best year of my life and now I can’t wait to see my dad for the first time in my life on Christmas Day when I Skype him,” he said. “That’s the best Christmas present I could ever want.”

Mr Grey said when he first met his father: “It was the most amazing moment in my life to have finally met my dad for the first time. I wait-ed 50 years for to see him and was completely lost for words when I first saw him. I just gave him a big hug.”

Piers morgan has re-newed his call for a ban on assault rifles as more than 63,000 americans signed a petition to get him out of the country. morgan, famous for his sharp tongue and straight talk-ing, has answered critics back on twit-ter, saying: “merry Christmas! even to those who want me deported.” he re-peated his view that assault rifles should be banned in the us following the latest shooting in which two volunteer fire fighters were shot dead in new york state. the pair were killed, and a further two others injured, by a gunman who set fire to a car and a house as a trap and ambushed them when they arrived at the scene.

The CNN host and former Daily Mirror editor tweeted: “Americans murdered with assault weapons in movie theatres, temples, schools, shopping malls - now, as they put out fires. Where does it end? Come on America, ENOUGH: Ban as-sault weapons & high-capac-ity magazines, and enforce background checks on 100% of gun sales. Do it now.”The former Daily Mirror edi-tor had, days before, called for tighter gun control

measures after the massa-cre at Sandy Hook elemen-tary school in Newtown, Connecticut. He interviewed Larry Pratt, Gun Owners of America executive director, and appeared incredulous when Mr Pratt suggested more weapons were a cred-ible solution. “You’re an un-believably stupid man, aren’t you?” Morgan asked during the heated debate. “You have absolutely no coherent argument. You don’t actual-ly give a damn about the gun

murder rate in America.” A Texas journalist posted a petition on the White House website after the interview alleging outspoken Morgan “is engaged in a hostile at-tack against the US Con-stitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploit-ing his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the

rights of American citizens,” the petition says. Many Americans follow to the letter their interpreta-tion of the Second Amend-ment, which enshrines the “right to bear arms” in the US Constitution. Mr Morgan insists America can outlaw military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines without infringing on people’s con-stitutional rights, and says he has no quarrel with the Second Amendment.

Morgan refused to back down from his position. “Ironic US gun rights cam-paign to deport me for ‘attacking Second Amend-ment rights’ - is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?” he posted earlier on his Twit-ter feed, referring to free-dom of speech provisions. “If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?”

this year, the Queen used her annual Christ-mas broadcast to the nation to express her gratitude for the out-pouring of enthusiasm for her Diamond Jubi-lee celebrations this year. Delivering the broadcast for the first time in 3D, Her Maj-

esty said she was struck by the “strength of fellowship and friendship” shown by well-wishers to mark her 60 years on the throne. “People of all ages took the trouble to take part in various ways and in many nations,” she said. The Queen paid tribute to the armed forces “whose sense of duty takes them away from family and friends”

over the holidays. She also spoke about UK’s hosting of the Olympics, praising the “skill, dedication, training and teamwork of our athletes” and singling out the volunteers who devoted themselves “to keeping oth-ers safe, supported and com-forted.” Earlier on Christmas Day, the Queen was joined by

other members of the royal family for a church service in Sandringham. But there were some notable absen-tees from the festivities this year. The Duke and Duch-ess of Cambridge spent the day with Kate’s family, while Prince Harry is serving as an Apache pilot in Afghanistan. Traditionally, the whole family gather at the Queen’s estate

home over the festive period, but this year Prince Harry is serving in Afghanistan, so is celebrating Christmas with troops. Meanwhile, William and Kate attended a service at Englefield Church in Engle-field, Berkshire. The Duke and Duchess are expected to visit to Sandringham at some point over the festive period. The Queen was wished a

merry Christmas by about 1,000 people who had been waiting for hours to see her at St Mary Magdalene. Wear-ing a turquoise coat dress and matching hat, she was given a variety of bouquets of flow-ers by around 50 young chil-dren who queued up meet her. She was also handed a bag of doggie treats for her corgis by a girl in the crowd.

the pOpe AppeAlS fOr peACethe Pope marked Christmas with a mass in the Vatican and asked if people still have room for children, the poor and god in their technology-driven lives. the pontiff also prayed for israelis and Pal-estinians to be able to live in peace and freedom, and asked the faithful to pray for strife-torn syria as well as Lebanon and iraq. The ceremony began at 10pm local time on Christmas Eve with a sound of trumpets, symbolis-ing Christian joy over the news of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. At mid-night, church bells tolled through-out Rome, while inside the basilica, the voices of the Vatican boys’ choir sounded gloriously. Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican traditionally begins at midnight, but the start time was brought forward years ago to give the pontiff time to rest before his Christmas Day speech. A smiling 85-year-old Ben-edict, dressed in gold vestments, waved to applauding church-goers as he was guided by aides wearing white gloves, on wheeled platform up the aisle in St Peter’s Basilica to-wards the ornate main altar. In his homily, Benedict urged peo-ple to reflect upon what they find time for in their busy lives: “The great moral question of our atti-tude toward the homeless, toward refugees and migrants takes on a deeper dimension. Do we really have room for God when he seeks to enter under our roof? Do we have time and space for him? The faster we can move the more ef-ficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent.” He continued: “Let us pray that Israelis and Palestinians be able to live their lives in the peace of the one God and in freedom.” Benedict also spoke of his hope for progress in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. “There is hope in the world ... even at the most difficult times and in the most difficult situations,” he said, praying that “peace spring up for the peo-ple of Syria.” He added: “Once again I appeal for an end to the blood-shed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict.” Hours before the basilica Mass, Pope Benedict lit a Christmas peace candle at his studio window over-looking St Peter’s Square to mark the end of a service for the unveil-ing of the Vatican’s crib.

King Juan Carlos of spain used his annual Christmas eve message to the nation to appeal for national unity to overcome the economic cri-sis devastating his country. his message was broadcast on television and on you-tube, for the first time. The head of state called on his politicians to work together to avoid “unnecessary confronta-tions,” a reference which will be interpreted as being aimed at political parties seeking a referendum on whether Catalo-nia should split from Spain. The 74-year-old king added that it was time to “do everything pos-sible to close the open wounds” which had led to separatist de-sires. Juan Carlos didn’t mention personal troubles that have plagued him this year which include an highly criticised el-ephant hunt in Africa during which he fractured his hip, and a fraud investigation into son-in-law Inaki Urdangarin’s business affairs.

foie Gras Banned in house Of lords

it may ruin their Christmas Dinner at the house of Lords, and many celebrated dinners in the future, but Foie gras is being cut from the menu after a series of com-plaints from animal rights campaigners. Lords catering chiefs have been highly crit-icised for serving the delicacy, controver-sial due to the way geese and ducks are treated in produc-tion, in the spectacu-lar Barry room res-taurant. The luxury pate will no longer be served when peers return in the New Year from their Christmas break. “It will not feature on menus from January,” said a spokesman. The dish, which

is made by force-feeding geese and ducks with grain before killing them for their swollen livers, has already been banned in the House of Commons. Food produc-ers are banned from force-feeding animals to make the pate in the UK, but it is still available from fine food spe-cialists and in specialist res-taurants. Campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) called for the pate to be banned from Lords restaurants and won support from a number of peers. “We are delighted that the House of Lords will join the House of Commons in taking a stand against cruelty and removing this most un-British of products from its menus,” said Mimi Bekhechi, Peta’s associate director. David Heath, Agriculture minister has urged consum-

ers not to buy foie gras because of the inhumane method of producing it and Labour MP Chris Williamson has campaigned against the

consumption of foie gras and says peers should be setting an example to oth-ers. “It’s very good news that they have decided to yield to

the popular view of the vast majority of British people that it’s a totally cruel and unnecessary foodstuff,” he said. “It’s highly appropriate

that it should not be served anywhere in Parliament as parliamentarians ought to be setting a better example to the wider public.”

With the staging of 2 massive events this summer, all eyes were on england’s capital city. On 5th June 1 million well-wishers filled the Mall below the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, with 16.9 mil-lion (almost 60% of viewing public) in Britain alone. 6 weeks later the world’s eyes turned to London again for the Olympics, a truly

amazing TV event and a triumph for the or-ganisers and athletes who scored 3rd high-est medal count of 65!! 2012 also saw Dallas return, and sadly the death of JR actor Larry Hagman, I’m A Ce-lebrity smashed XFactor’s ratings and global success for period drama Downton Abbey’s 3rd series. Homeland, The Walking Dead and Modern Family were some of the most watched US shows and Doctor Who said goodbye to Amy and Rory Pond.

Well, as we reach the end of another year, i’m going to take a look back at what we munched on popcorn to, downloaded on itunes and recorded or tuned in to. i celebrated 3 years at Vivo and reu-nited with so many friends and fam-ily at my and Becky’s blessing as well as performing once again with all the Wildboyz including my brother and

a genre, until recently a geek only zone, is now hollywood’s biggest money-maker and this year one movie was the culmination of a build-up of no less than 5 movies over the past few years, all pre-quels to the biggest, most ambi-tious superhero movie of all time... ”Avengers Assemble” wouldn’t have been pos-sible without Mickey Mouse, but once Disney purchased the rights to Marvel, the chance to make the biggest superhero ensemble movie ever became a reality-2 “Ironman” movies, a “Hulk” ,”Thor” and “Captain America” movie were basically feature length trailers for a spectac-ular that was exciting, dramatic and also very funny, mainly thanks to a guy, whose last movie was a flop and last 3 TV series were cancelled!! Buffy creator and the genius director behind

the Avengers, Joss Whedon is now a force to be reckoned with. Can’t wait for Avengers 2!! 2012 also saw the end of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, huge box office, global criti-cal acclaim, at last all bad memories of the tacky mega dud Batman and Robin were finally gone forever!! Many people considered rebooting the Spider-man franchise this soon a mistake, but good re-views and profit margins mean we have Spidey as well as many more superhero movies to look forward to in the next few years!!!!

i can’t see what all the fuss is about gay marriage. the arch-bishop of wherever has spluttered on about it this week. he is against it, which is no real surprise. if two people love each other, why should it be a problem? The church is only alienat-ing itself once again from an ever changing and learning society. I personally wouldn’t want to get married in a church anyway. I don’t go to

church. On the odd occasion that I have been to church, a man in a dress has talked about things that I didn’t understand. I can’t be do-ing with blokes who wear dresses! I can see that marriage is important for some people and I respect that. For many gay people, it is the only way that they can ensure that their lifetime partners are not thrown out into the cold when the other dies. With-out that certificate, greedy families can stop them from having anything to do with

the funeral and take com-plete control of the estate. The church is a slow moving old steam driven machine that is grinding to a halt as it makes little or no move to keep with the times. Doesn’t the bible say that people were created equal in the eyes of God? Why can’t they practice what they preach? Why can a woman be a vicar but not a bishop? Why are so many gay people working in the church? What a hypocritical bunch they are!

Amen!

Why are people so ob-sessed with the end of the world? the world will end for us all, one day, but not all at once. nasa had thought that an as-teroid was due to hit the planet in 2040. it is approximately 130 metres wide. Further studies of the rock now show that it will miss us by a distance equal to twice the dis-tance of the moon. Can’t they find something better to do with their time and money? Why would any-one want to know when the world is going to end?

Can you imagine the panic? I predict that the end of the human race will be a slow and painful one as we continue to poison the planet. Our greedy lust for more and more will eventually become too much

for our little rock! The seas and skies will be-come too acid to grow food and we will all eventually starve to death. Happy New Year Everybody!

See you next week xx

and so we reach the end of 2012. it has been a funny old year for me. the year began with the loss of my fa-ther. it was a difficult time, but throwing myself into my work helped for a while. the grief however, caught up with me later in the

year. it was probably six months later when i really felt the pain of losing him as i drove to work from the north of the island. the tears turned on and contin-ued to flow all the way to Las americas. i had heard about delayed grief but i had always

thought that it was an imagined thing. since that day, i haven’t felt the grief or loss of my dad in an intense way. i still think of him of course, but with a smile on my face now. 2012 has been a year of fun on the whole. Working with Bitter and Twisted has reunit-ed me with many people who

I have met before and it has enabled me to make many new friends too. We are quite a close knit bunch at Vivo and we have plenty of laughs at work. My cabaret partner Barry is great fun to work with. It’s great to see one of your best friends almost every day. Working with him is a treat and usually manage to fit a few laughs into our work time. I made a couple of trips to England during the year. I managed to take in York, Cheshire, Devon and parts of Lancashire, including my favourite town Blackpool. Each time I go back to the UK, I feel more and more like

a foreigner. I enjoy shopping for things that I can’t get in Tenerife for a couple of days, but once that is over, I want to come home again. People look so serious and generally miserable in Britain. I don’t know whether it is the weath-er or the fact that they are being taxed left, right and centre on everything they do. One of the things that re-ally winds me up about Britain these days, is the way that every cashier in every shop tries to sell you something else when you are at the till. It can be anything from a bar of chocolate to a credit card. It drives me to distrac-tion. Everybody wants your

money, they always have, but at least it wasn’t in your face a few years ago. I end the year in my for-ties, but on January 1st, I will say goodbye to them. There won’t be a tear in my eye. I will embrace 50 with a big smile on my face. Being 50 will make little difference to me. I comfort myself with the fact that I have lived longer than James Dean, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe and many more. Every day will be as precious at it has always been. I will continue to try to better myself and to de-velop the show and my own education as we hurtle at top speed through 2013.

My 2012

Why doesn’t Piers morgan count him-self lucky to be in the position he is and stop telling the american people what they should do. i am sure that they don’t need this pompous ass spout-ing on about gun control. For me, he is a man of limited talent, whose manner and personality have no place on popular

television. As a journa l -ist, I would h a v e t h o u g h t that his q u e s -tions in interviews would be a little more probing and i n -

te r e s t i n g . W a t c h i n g him is like w a t c h -ing Night Nurse! The only

redeeming thing about

him is that he was nice to Susan Boyle.

ok, so it happens every year. When i was younger, we lived off turkey sandwiches, tur-key curry and sometimes the odd roast turkey dinner again on Boxing Day! there are loads of things you can do with your leftover tur-key from your Christmas dinner, why slap it in between two pieces of buttered bread for a quick snack? through the years i have seen some interesting things being done with the remaining festive bird – the most memorable one watching a Chef turn in into an eye water-ing Boxing Day “turkey and ham soup” – Buuur-rrrgggghhh!!! here’s a great italian Cacciatore with a twist!

A lawyer representing Mr Starck’s company Ubik told reporters his client was owed 3million Euros from a 9millions Euro com-mission for his work on the minimalist yacht and now wanted the rest he is owed. The yacht will remain in Amsterdam port pend-ing payment by lawyers representing Mr Jobs’ estate. “The project has been going since 2007 and there had been a lot of de-tailed talk between Jobs and Starck,” said lawyer, Roelant Klaassen. “These guys trusted each other,

A while ago my son slept with his cousin and weeks later she announced she was pregnant. I’m convinced the baby is his. She had a boyfriend at the time but they’d briefly split up before she fell pregnant. He asked her and said if the

baby was his he’d stand by her but she swore it wasn’t. But I can’t ignore the fact my niece might be carrying my grandchild. His cousin’s baby would need a DNA test to see who the Dad is, but if my son’s not bothered about getting one done, should I just forget about it?Yvonne Ultimately Yvonne, I don’t think you can do much other than go along with whatever your son wants. It’s quite worrying to know that yet another child is coming in to the world with, potentially, no father but unless either your niece or your son feel a DNA test is necessary, you’re pretty much powerless. Talk to your boy again and explain how important it is for him as well as you to make absolutely sure that this child isn’t his Be careful not to push too hard because you’ll just end up creating a rift but if I were you, I’d certainly make it clear that I was concerned. Hopefully, one of these two will see sense and do the right thing at the end of the day. All you can do is make your point and give them some space to think about the situation.

I’ve been having an affair with a work colleague – my boss, in fact – for six months. I’m not proud of it but I love him so much. The Christmas party is approaching and I’m worried that someone will guess what’s going on. I have no idea how to act around him. I know you’ll just tell me to stop seeing him but I can’t.Yvonne If the pair of you are in loveless relationships then you need to deal with that before hopping into bed together don’t you? Running around in secrecy causes all sorts of problems as you’ve discovered and somewhere along the line, I’m sure it will all end in tears! Right now, all you two have is a sexual relationship; don’t kid yourself that’s its anything more. Snatching the odd moments here and there, hiding your feelings and deceiving everybody around you!

Don’t you think you owe it to yourself to insist on more from this little arrangement? I can’t help you with the Christmas party, what you’re doing is just plain wrong and the awkwardness is the price you’re always going to have to pay. The longer you let things go on the way they are, the unhappier and more uncomfortable you’ll be.

Sit down with your lover and see how the land lies, tell him how you feel and see what his reaction is. Be prepared for a shock though Yvonne as it’s entirely possible that this guy sees you as nothing more than a bit on the side. Whatever the case, you know what you’re doing isn’t right don’t you? It’s time to change that.

is he the dad?

My family has been invited to spend Christmas in Spain with my husband’s parents. The kids are so excited about going but I’m dreading it. The problem is that I’m so scared of flying. We’ve always gone on holiday in England as the thought of getting on a plane fills me with fear. I know my kids deserve this but I’m so scared. What can I tell them?Lisa Rather than having to disappoint the family, why not use this opportunity to

overcome your fear? Speak to the customer services department of the airline you’re meant to be travelling with and they’ll either put you in touch with an in-house team dedicated to helping people like you they’ll suggest an outside organisation. You know you’re not alone with this phobia Lisa so don’t be ashamed. Personally, I’m petrified of spiders but, over the years, because I’ve had to face my fears, I’ve improved a great deal! Essentially, in your case,

this is exactly what you need to do - face your fear! I won’t rattle off the statistics about how safe air travel is because I know that probably does nothing to allay your fears. What I will say though is that you can get over this if you work at it. Just imagine how much it will mean to your family to be able to go out to Spain and have an amazing Christmas with you? Pick up the phone and give it a shot. You’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.

I’ve been living in council accommoda-tion since I left my parents four years ago. I’ve moved round a lot but never found anywhere that I feel happy. All I want in life is a place of my own – even just a tiny little flat, but I don’t know how to go about it. I don’t earn enough to start saving for a deposit and I feel hopeless and miserable. Do you have any advice on how I can fulfil my dreams and be happy?Leanne You can sit and feel sorry for your-self and your seemingly unattainable dreams forever and a day Leanne but

that’s not going to get you anywhere is it? I have to admit that the current economic climate isn’t working in your favour but at the end of the day, if you want something as badly as you appear to, you’re going to have to work hard to get it. You say you don’t earn enough now so surely your first priority should be retraining for a better paid job? Your local college should be able to advise you on the courses and options avail-able to you; all you have to do is ask them. I’m not pretending that this is go-ing to happen overnight, it could take you years to get where you want to be. Provided you knuckle down though and take positive steps to im-prove your income, eventually, you’ll be able to scrape together a deposit and buy your dream home. Alternatively, you can just carry on moping about this and, in ten years’ time when you’re still in the same boat, you can blame yourself.

the murder of a journalist has chilling echoes of a 1960s horror film starring midsomer’s own stella harris. When stella’s more famous sister returns after a 40-year family rift, the killings escalate, each reminiscent of a movie plot. is life – and death – imitating art? Journalist Eve Lomax is murdered as she watches a cult 60s horror film starring Midsomer’s own Stella Harris. Colin Yule opens the inaugural Midsomer Lang-ley film festival by showing the same film. But Stella’s evening is eclipsed by the dramatic arrival of her sis-ter Diana Davenport, a Hollywood superstar. Diana and her producer husband Cy are reunited with their son Scott, who fled the family home to live in Midsomer. He is not pleased to see them.

Eve’s landlord Patrick Tilman tells Barnaby that Eve was writing a book on the sisters. Barnaby is suspicious of Patrick, as is his wife Juliet, who runs an organic vegetable delivery business. Meanwhile Kate discovers Eve had two puncture wounds in her neck, as if she was killed by a vampire, just like the film. Stella’s daughter Emma is having a relationship with toyboy Perry Stevens, a delivery driver for Ju-liet. Emma’s unimpressed by Diana’s arrival, unlike her own star-struck daughter Rosie. Meanwhile Diana begs Stella to end their 40-year rift. Colin reveals that he’d helped Emma with her book but things turned sour when she refused his request for a consultancy fee and a treasured rare photograph from his collection went missing.

Sunderland a 1-0 victory over Manchester CitysunDerLanD beat cham-pions manchester City 1-0 at the stadium of Light with adam John-son scoring against his former club. The winner came just eight minutes into the second half when Johnson cut inside from the right past David Silva and unleashed a left-footed shot which squirmed under Joe Hart and into the bottom corner. However, the winner was not without controversy with the visitors adamant they should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Pablo Zabaleta by Craig Gardner during the build-up.Sunderland turned in one of their best displays of the sea-son on a day when City played only in patches, and Hart had to turn away Steven Fletcher’s skidding effort and keep out Stephane Sessegnon 10 min-utes from time. However, if Johnson was the hero in front of a delighted Boxing Day crowd of 42,190, keeper Simon Mignolet de-served equal praise. The Belgian denied Yaya Toure and Silva before the break and Sergio Aguero after it to claim a precious clean sheet and make a huge contribution to-wards the win. City arrived determined not to complete an unwanted hat-trick of 1-0 league defeats on

Wearside but they could not as they slipped seven points adrift of league leaders Manchester United. They might have been ahead with just eight minutes gone, but Vincent Kompany’s header came back off the crossbar and Yaya Toure’s goalbound follow-up was hacked away by Mignolet.

City boss Roberto Mancini and Zabaleta were then left appealing in vain for a free-kick for Gardner’s challenge on the full-back, as Johnson picked up possession and cut inside be-fore firing home. Sessegnon might have dou-bled his side’s advantage within two minutes, but pulled his effort across the face of goal

with City in disarray. The visitors were almost breached once again on the hour when James McClean picked out Sessegnon in front of goal, but the Benin interna-tional could not take the ball in his stride.Kompany, who had already been booked, was fortunate to escape a second yellow card

for a block on McClean as City struggled to contain a Black Cats side growing in confi-dence by the minute. Belgium international Mignolet excelled himself once again two minutes later to deny Aguero one on one, but it was Hart in the firing line with 10 minutes remaining when Sessegnon was played in by substitute Fraizer

Campbell with the keeper com-ing out on top. City battered away at their hosts as time ran down, but with Sunderland defending deep and with tenacity, they simply could not find a way through and McClean almost served up the perfect fin-ish with an 88th-minute shot which flew just wide.

there won’t be much of a festive feet up for CD marino coach Jose Juan almeida, ending 2012 with a 0-2 home loss to atletico madrid B will have sharpened his resolve to add new players to the squad. Marino showed plenty of spirit and created some de-cent chances but their op-ponents were able to shift up a gear when it mattered and they were fairly comfortable winners. Noah, and to a lesser extent his strike partner Bal-duino, didn’t adapt to the well drilled offside trap of Madrid and too often their progress was halted by the refs whistle. Both strikers had chances in the first 10 minutes, Noah run-ning on too far and Balduino firing wide of the goal. Noah was just a touch short with another effort and visiting keeper Gil was able to mop up a loose ball. Madrid came more into the game, Alberto was strong and decisive with a two fisted clear-ance and the defence did well to snuff out another attack on the half hour. Balduino blasted wide again and Javi Marchena carved out an opening on the left but no one in blue was waiting at the end of his fine cross. Madrid grabbed the lead just before half time; Ivan was on the end of a break away to flick the ball over Alberto.

Peraza fired a shot over the Atletico bar and Adan arrived from the bench and started to cause problems with his height. Peraza had another chance but this time found the side netting and Noah got up well for a free ball which was punched away by the Madrid goalie. When Noah was pulled down in the penalty area the referee ignored his pleas but within a minute he awarded a

spot kick at the other end as Rayco brought down Manquil-lo, Cidoncha gratefully made it 2-0. The defeat leaves Marino four points adrift at the foot of the table with another five point gap to the third from bottom side. Bookings for Barcos and Maikel mean they will miss the next game away to Guijuelo on 6 January – it doesn’t get any easier.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Tenerife Weekly - 28th December - 3rd January 2013 55 FuLL marks for am-bition, but just one point for the 0-0 draw at lowly rsD alcala. Coach alvaro Cervera started ari-dane and guillem as a twin strike force but both had poor games due at least in part to a lack of service from a weakened midfield as Cristo martin was left on the bench. Suso forced an early cor-ner and Julio put a cross over the bar at the other end as the sides settled in on a cold, boggy pitch. Moy-ano was caught out at right back and was relieved to see Biendi put his shot wide. Suso made some openings for Tenerife but the strik-ers weren’t alert enough to capitalize and it took an impressive diving save from Sergio Aragoneses to stop Nana from taking the lead. Portilla and Carlos were

always a danger up front for the home team but a lit-tle luck and some good de-fending kept them at bay. Tarantino knew little about a Carlos shot that bounced off his arm but going for-ward Raul Llorente curled the ball over the Alcala bar and Guillem ran straight at the keeper when a chip would have been the bet-ter option. Guillem drew an-other notable blank early in the second half after Suso picked him out. Cristo came on and restored some nor-mality to the midfield but it was still pretty even, Ari-dane hit another soft try at the goalie and home sub Del Moral came off second best as Sergio punched a high ball clear. Youth team scor-ing sensation Ayoze Perez got a 20 minute run out and despite fitting in well he couldn’t add to a scoring reputation that has alerted QPR. It was heading for a draw, Tenerife survived late scares, a great top cor-

ner save from Sergio and a Llorente race back and clearance ensured a draw.

The next day second placed Aviles also drew making CD Tenerife the Christmas

chart topper. A couple of new faces may well grace the squad in time for the

next game, at home to Sala-manca on Kings Day, 6th January.

it was a busy run up to Christmas for CB Canarias with two away defeats in a week. on Wednesday 19 December they went down to unica-ja 88-67 and followed up a few days later losing at Caja Laboral 81-62. Despite that the yellows remain 14th of 18 teams in the elite aCB League.

The first defeat in Mal-aga was down to a punish-ing last quarter when they were brushed aside by 31 points to 18. Levi Rost was again on top form with 18 points but the depth wasn’t there to mount a strong finish. Then at sec-ond placed Caja Laboral in Vitoria they only com-peted on equal terms when they took the third quar-ter 9-10.Nicolas Richotti led the resistance with 17

points, not bad given that injuries made it difficult for him to train in the previous days. Tomorrow (Sat 29th ) there is a golden opportu-nity to consolidate as they host second from bottom Manresa at 7pm in La La-guna. Survival is the aim in this first season back in Spain’s top league and a win over their direct rivals would strike a major blow in that battle.

more famous for wind and kite surfing, el medano will be the fo-cus of new years eve attention as the san silvestre run welcomes runners of all ages and abilities on 31st December.
