From Fr. Godfrey — WELCOME. On behalf of all 3,000+ parishioners at Saint Ben-edict Cathedral, I welcome our brothers and sisters who received the “Easter sacraments” last weekend. Carter Flores and Chad Schmidt were baptized, confirmed and received First Ho-ly Communion. Brandon Brid-

dell, Simon Chevalier, Daniel Flores, Phil Garrison, Dylan Hancock, Shaunda Lynch, Lacey Matheis, Ami Pitt, Mitchell Matthews (UE), and Josh Powell (UE) all received the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. It was a splendid celebration. Welcome aboard to all twelve of you. We’re glad you’re with us at St. Ben’s! — FIRST HOLY COMMUNION will take place next weekend, but not during one of our regularly scheduled Masses. Please pray for our young brothers and sisters preparing for this important sacrament. Some have asked why it wasn’t delayed until the new school year. Delaying the reception of a sacrament for the con-venience of a school schedule isn’t the way of the Church. They deserve to know the Lord in the Eucharist in His fullness as soon as possible. — DAY OFF. Last Sunday, after the RCIA Mass, I drove up to see my friend, Fr. Joe Moriarty, near Indian-apolis. What a relaxing day on Monday! In a hilarious turn of events, Tuesday morning, I was seating people for the 9AM Mass, and someone said, “Father, are you ok? You look so tired.” I’m not taking that as a sign, but I hope over time, having a regular day off again will not make me look tired! — THANK YOU. At the risk of sounding ridiculous, again I do want to thank publicly Jeremy Korba for all that he’s done during the past four months. Without a single day off for 14 weeks, he was here making the Masses available for everyone who could not be present. That doesn’t really fall into the job description of the Director of Liturgical Music. It’s certainly above and be-yond! Please offer your own expression of gratitude to Jeremy when you see him! — MOM. Some have asked about Mom. She continues to decline, but still answers a question cleverly every now and then. God bless her and my dad, who misses her!

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store serves many purposes in our com-munity. We are a second-hand re-tail store and an outreach minis-try. As a retail store, we offer a great variety of items from clothing, to furniture, household goods and

much more. As an outreach ministry our Society offers vouchers to the store for those in need. Shopping at the Thrift Store is a great way to save money and give back to your community because every purchase you make goes right back into our work of helping our neighbors in need. Your purchases help us provide others with emer-gency social services, food, shelter, energy assistance, and much, much more. So please come and support the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store to help us help others.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Meaningful quotes like this can inspire us to do better, and be better. Whether it’s a reminder to help a neighbor out, or the push we need to be more ac-tive in our St. Ben’s parish, let the words of Gandhi be your inspiration. And, let these three simple steps from the Change Movement be your formula for change. STEP 1: NOTICE. Wake up and notice what’s happening in the world and your community around you. Maybe you aren’t aware that there are families and individuals all around our Cathedral that need help and need hope.

STEP 2: CHOOSE. Choose to create positive change in our community and then decide how you are going to get in-volved. Even if you start small like spending an hour or two volunteering somewhere, tip-ping generously, letting a car in front of you on the Lloyd Ex-pressway, picking up litter in the St. Ben’s parking lot or sticking an extra $5 in the Soci-ety of St. Vincent de Paul enve-lopes. STEP 3: ACT. Act as a role model for kindness, compas-sion and inclusion. Stop waiting for others to make our world better. YOU can be the change today.

St. Vincent de Paul News

Each week we will feature a ministry for you to

consider. Is God calling you to do more for others

through service? Heavenly Dusters~~~ Now that people are coming to Mass in church again, the need for some minimal cleaning in the church is back as well. Dusters are assigned to a team that cleans every three months. Vol-unteers are able to clean when convenient for them. Great for families to do together! For more information contact Kelley Coppens, 812-425-3369, [email protected].

What about Mass Intentions? Mass Intentions have somewhat of a checkered history. Throughout history, offering Mass for a particular inten-tion, especially unselfishly, is a work of charity, in and of itself. Masses are not offered to change God’s mind or to get what I really want, but as an act of charity that builds up the deposit of grace. Especially when Mass is offered for the dead, they may be already in heaven, but showing our concern and prayer for them, honoring their memory, entrusting them to God: these are good works.

Fr. Deydier House of Discernment Summer Update – June 2020

The second year of the Father Deydier House of Discernment came to a close on May 17, 2020. Three House residents moved into new steps for their vocational paths. Craig Wilmes of Holy Redeemer Parish moved out of the House having dis-cerned that the Lord is calling him to pursue married life. Mi-chael Mosbey of Good Shepherd Parish departed for the Mon-astery at Saint Meinrad to discern and begin Candidacy for mo-nastic life. Chase Riecker of St. Isidore Parish has submitted his application for affiliation with the Diocese of Evansville as a Seminarian for the 2020-2021 school year. The House is work-ing! This summer, newly-ordained transitional deacon and seminari-an Garrett Braun moved into the House as part of his intern-ship at Saint Boniface Parish. We are anticipating a late-spring Priestly Ordination for Deacon Garrett in 2021. Savio Nights were ended due to the coronavirus, but an essay contest about saintly men from the past century was held in its place. The winning essays were awarded by a panel of priests, married women and men, and single Catholics from the dio-cese. The winners were Caleb Mullinex, Resurrection Parish (6-7th winner) and James Elpers, Good Shepherd (runner-up); Justin Rauscher, Saint John the Baptist in Newburgh (8-12th winner) and Aidan Mohr, Saint John the Baptist in Newburgh (runner up). The boys received photos of their saints and an Amazon gift card. Before the pandemic, the Knights of Columbus of Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Daylight hosted a pancake breakfast to benefit the House of Discernment. In May, the Knights pre-sented a donation of $4,600 to the House. It was the largest check the House has received from a parish since the House opened in August 2018. Three House residents have already been accepted for August 2020. The men are all college students from different universi-ties in Evansville: UE, USI, and Ivy Tech. One more USI stu-dent is planning to apply, and space is still available beyond the likely 2020-21 of four residents. If you know of a young man (18-30) who might benefit from a Catholic community of pray-er and fraternity while continuing his career or college, please contact House Director, Fr. Tyler Tenbarge ([email protected]). Men who are discerning really do ben-efit from this place. Our weekly Monday Night “Holy Hour & Mass for Vocations” at Sacred Heart has reopened to the public. Join us for Adora-tion and Confession at 6:30pm and Mass following at 7:30pm, and you can follow us on Facebook: “Father Deydier House of Discernment” to keep up with what’s happening at the House.

Strengthen Your Marriage We would not expect a car, or a house heating/air conditioning system to run for years without any servicing, so why do we ex-pect our marriage relationship to keep running smoothly without a little maintenance? The World-wide Marriage Encounter Week-end gives married couples the tools to keep their relationship in top running condition. Future Marriage Encounter Weekends will be at Mount Saint Francis Centre for Spirituality, New Alba-ny, August 14-16 and at Our La-dy of Fatima Retreat House, Indi-anapolis, from November 6-8. Visit www.wwme.org for further information.

The Rector & Pastoral Council are in the process of establish-ing a Communications Com-mittee for our parish. We hope to continue offering a variety of media (print, website, email, etc.) while conveying important parish information more effec-tively. If you have ideas for this committee, whether it is mem-bership or agenda items, please email Fr. Godfrey (gmullen@ evdio.org) or speak to a mem-ber of the Pastoral Council. Communication is at the heart of evangelization, spreading our faith!
