Hello Parents and Friends,

Welcome back to school!

It has been quite a unique start to the year to say the least. The scope of building works carried out over

the school holidays was huge and it took a gigantic effort by all staff to have their classrooms ready on

the first day of school. We are so appreciative of the staff who worked tirelessly in the week leading up

to the beginning of school to prepare the classrooms and Uniform Shop. We are a very lucky community

to have such dedicated staff.

It has been a great start to the year with all students from Grades Prep-6 settling

in extremely well to their new classrooms. Our Prep students started last Friday

and it was a memorable moment for all students and families. A forty-three degree

day is not an ideal way to begin school but our Prep students soldiered on and had

a memorable first day.

Throughout the first week all Grades 1-6 students have undertaken a mini-inquiry about what makes a

positive classroom and a successful learning environment. Our students have been participating in team

building activities, devising their classroom agreements on how they treat each other and finding out why

their class is unique and special. Our Unique Community Day took place today and it was an enjoyable

celebration of what makes each class at our school unique and special.

We held another successful House Swimming Carnival on Tuesday for our students in Grades 3-6. All

students participated in a range of events with our best swimmers going on to represent Templestowe

Park at the upcoming Templestowe District Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to Mr Kitney for

organising such a wonderful event. A special congratulations to our teachers for winning the staff versus

students race; we have some pretty handy swimmers on staff.

We had seven new classroom teachers start

at Templestowe Park last week. We would

like to welcome Mr Ben Ahern, Ms Sarah

Urbano, Mr Neil Mitchell, Mr Oliver Konakoff,

Ms Madeline Skaras, Ms Megan Saker and

Mr James Gitson. Our new teachers have

fitted in seamlessly to our school. Please say

hello if you see them in the playground.

It is great to be back at school and we look

forward to a productive term ahead.

School Facilities Update

As published on the Compass News Feed last week, there were substantial proactive asbestos removal

works over the summer holidays. As part of these works the school decided to start the student toilets

improvement project, meaning that we have hired portaloos to replace the main student toilet block.

These toilets are used over recess and lunchtime, while the permanent student toilets in the Grade 5/6

building and school hall are used at all other times.

We are planning to reopen the main student toilet block on Monday or Tuesday of next week. The toilets

have been retiled, a new vinyl floor has been installed, the walls have been repainted and new partitions

erected. Further improvement works to the toilet facilities will take place outside of school hours in the

coming weeks. I thank all students and our community for their patience with this project.

Further works undertaken over the holidays included new carpet in all Prep rooms and in the Performing

Arts room. During the Term 1 school holidays all classrooms in the main building will be recarpeted. Glass

doors were placed at the ends of the Grade 5/6 classrooms to enclose the TPTV studio and to create a

specific room for our withdrawal Target Teaching program with Mrs Abrey.

Mark is in talks with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) about the $200,000 Inclusive School

Grant that we won last year. This grant will be used to fence the entire school, build a sensory playground

and a Grade 3-6 playground.

Important Information about Allergies and Anaphylaxis at School

We have a number of students at the school who have allergies and

anaphylaxis to a range of foods. Whilst we do not ban any foods at

Templestowe Park, we strongly discourage all students from bringing nuts

and nut related products to school given the prevalence of allergies to these

products. We ask you to consider others in your child’s class who may have

reactions to different foods.

No Sharing of Food or Buying Food for other Students

A further strategy we utilise to reduce the incidence of adverse reactions to foods is to ask that there is

no sharing of food. Families pack their child’s lunchboxes with the intention of their own child consuming

the products in there, so it is not appropriate for students to be sharing or swapping any items within it.

Instead, we encourage students to take home uneaten items so that parents can be informed about what

has or hasn’t been eaten. Likewise, students are not permitted to buy their friends food from the canteen

for the same reasons.

All our staff are level 2 first aid trained and have training every six months on anaphylaxis. As outlined in

the information below, having an anaphylactic reaction can be fatal so we seek your support in ensuring

that the immediate environment stays safe for all of our students. The following information has been

An allergy, is an overreaction by the body’s immune system to a normally harmless substance.

Substances that can trigger an allergic reaction are called allergens. Allergens may be in

medication, in the environment (eg. pollens, grasses, moulds, dogs and cats), or proteins

(most often) in the foods we eat. Individuals can have mild/moderate or severe allergies.

In Australia allergies are very common. Around one in three people will develop allergies at

some time during their life. The most common allergic conditions are food allergies, eczema,

asthma and hay fever. Food allergy occurs in around ten percent of children and approximately

two percent of adults.

Having a food allergy means that when you eat a food containing that protein (allergen), the

immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, triggering symptoms that can affect

a person’s breathing, stomach and gut, skin and/ or heart and blood pressure.

The same immune response occurs in drug allergy when a drug is ingested or injected and in

insect allergy when a sting or bite occurs. There are also less common allergens that can also

cause such an immune response.

For someone with a severe allergy, exposure to the allergen can cause a life-threatening

reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis affects the whole body, often within minutes of

exposure.

Compass – Logon at the Very Least Once a Week!

All school information is forwarded to families via the Compass

platform. Put simply, if you are not logging onto Compass at least

once a week you will not know what is happening with your child’s

education and what is happening around the school.

If you are unable to access Compass please contact the school office for assistance.

Grade 6 Leaders Badge Presentation Assembly: Wednesday, 12 February, 2.40pm

We will be holding a special assembly on Wednesday, 12 February to present our

2020 school leaders with their badges. The Hon Matthew Guy (Member for Bulleen)

will present our leaders with their badges. We invite all family and friends to attend

the ceremony and support our new school leaders.

Cyber Safety Parent Information Night: Parenting in the Digital World

Tuesday, 25 February, 7.30pm

As published on Compass, the Alannah and Madeline Foundation will be undertaking the ‘Parenting in the

Digital World’ cyber safety presentation for our parent community.

You will be provided with insight into the online world of young people, including the latest trends, risks

and research. You will also receive practical tips on how to manage technology.

We recommend all parents from across every year level attend this highly important session, in

particular, all Grade 5/6 parents. The session is an 'adult only' event - no students to attend.

Entry to the Main Building – Dropping Off and Pick Up

It has been wonderful to see all the new Grade 1 students settle into their new surroundings in the main

school building. It has been a bit difficult for our students to enter the building with the ongoing facilities

works, but they have managed very well with the changes.

At both drop off and pick up times we ask for all parents to remain outside of the school buildings. We

do this for a number of different reasons. First, we need to monitor who comes in and out of the school

buildings, this is particularly important at pick up time. Any person who is in the building within school

hours needs to sign in at the school office. We also encourage students to take responsibility for their

school bags etc, and encourage them to place them on the hooks and take out what they need for the

day. Finally, we aim to reduce the heavy traffic inside the buildings at this time and minimise distractions

for students and teachers as they commence the day.

If you would like to drop in and provide a quick message to the teacher in the morning you are more than

welcome to do so. If you would like an extended meeting with a teacher we encourage you to arrange a

time prior to the catch up.

Getting to Know You Meetings

As published on Compass this week, in the week beginning 17 February, you will have an opportunity to

formally meet your child's 2020 teacher and share information in regards to your child. The evening of

Tuesday, February 18 is set aside for these discussions. Other times will be offered by teachers other

than the Tuesday of that particular week. Bookings will be made via Compass and can commence next

week. More information to follow, but for now please place 18 February into your calendar.

Child Safety -Student Excursions

Taking students on an excursion out of the school is a significant logistical project. Teachers must manage

the general safety of their class, anaphylaxis and other medical issues, custody restrictions and access to

students, and ensure that all students are accounted for. This is one of the most important responsibilities

for teachers and the tasks involved in planning and organising excursions are very comprehensive.

The most important step of this process is knowing where all students are at all times. Parents sign consent

forms allowing their child to leave the school premises, attend the event and then return to school. All

students are counted and accounted for when they leave the school grounds, throughout the day and

before they leave an event or place; finally they are recounted to ensure they have all returned safely to

school.

If parents and guardians approach teachers during excursions to take their child home, this places a

considerable burden on the ability for the teacher to manage their class group. There have been situations

in Victorian schools where students have been unaccounted for due to a child being picked up from an

excursion and children being handed over to a parent with restrictions.

We ask that all students who attend excursions return to school as guided by the prior parental consent.

Term 1 Curriculum Overviews – Published via Compass: Friday, 14 February

Term 1 curriculum overviews for all year levels will be forwarded to parents via Compass on Friday, 14

February. Within these overviews you will find what your child is learning in all curriculum areas, the

Positive Education focus for the term, homework requirements, Specialist days and teacher contact details.

All term overviews are permanently kept in the Community Section of Compass (choose School

Documentation from the drop down menu then School Community Information then the year level

folder that you wish to access).

Prep 2020 Information Night

The Prep 2020 information for parents will take place on Tuesday, 18 February at 7:30pm in the school

hall. We have decided to place the Information Night on the same night as the Getting to Know You

meetings for the convenience of parents with siblings in other year levels.

At this meeting the Prep teachers will explain the teaching and learning program in Prep, the specialist

teaching program and how to support your child at home.

2020 School Council Elections

In the coming weeks all families will receive information about the possibility of nominating for our School

Council. Participation in the School Council is open to all parents and members of the community.

Membership of the School Council provides a great opportunity to be a part of future school directions and

to assist in providing the best possible learning opportunities for our students. If you would like further

information about School Council and its processes please do not hesitate to contact Mark Roberts.

Parking around the School

As with all primary schools in our area and across Victoria, there are hundreds,

sometimes thousands, of students and parents converging on a very small area within

a twenty minute period. There will always be congestion, this is simply a fact of life.

We are very lucky to have multiple entry points to the school and a very

accommodating Greek Church that allows us to use their carpark throughout the day.

All parking and drop off information can be found in the ‘Parking Around TPPS’ document. This document

is permanently kept in the Community Section of Compass (choose School Documentation from

the drop down menu then School Community Information then click on the document).

Personal Goods Brought to School at Owner’s Risk

The Department of Education and Training (DET) does not hold insurance for personal property brought

to schools. We encourage you to not allow your child to bring any unnecessary or particularly valuable

items to school as it can be most upsetting for all concerned when items are damaged or go missing.

Privacy Information for Parents and Carers

During the ordinary course of your child’s attendance at our school, school staff will collect your child’s

personal and health information when necessary to educate your child, or to support your child’s social

and emotional wellbeing or health in the school context. Such information will also be collected when

required to fulfil a legal obligation, including duty of care, anti-discrimination law and occupational health

and safety law. If that information is not collected, the school may be unable to provide optimal education

or support to your child, or fulfil those legal obligations.

For example, health information may be collected through the school nurse, primary welfare officer or

wellbeing staff member. If your child is referred to a specific health service at school, such as a Student

Support Services officer, the required consent will be obtained. Our school also collects information

provided by parents and carers through the School Entrance Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) and the Early

Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) Transition Form.

Our school uses online tools, such as apps and other software, to effectively collect and manage

information about your child for teaching and learning purposes, parent communication and engagement;

student administration; and school management purposes. When our school uses these online tools, we

take steps to ensure that your child’s information is secure. If you have any concerns about the use of

these online tools, please contact us.

School staff will only share your child’s personal or health information with other staff who need to know

to enable the school to educate or support your child, or fulfil a legal obligation.

When our students transfer to another Victorian government school, personal and health information

about that student will be transferred to that next school. Transferring this information is in the best

interests of our students and assists that next school to provide optimal education and support to students.

In some limited circumstances, information may be disclosed outside of the school (and outside of the

Department of Education and Training). The school will seek your consent for such disclosures unless the

disclosure is allowed or mandated by law.

Our school values the privacy of every person. When collecting and managing personal and health

information, all school staff must comply with Victorian privacy law. For more information about privacy

including about how to access personal and health information held by the school about you or your child,

Throughout this notice, ‘staff’ includes principals, teachers, Student Support Service officers, youth

unpaid.

Parents who need access to a computer for logging onto Compass can access a laptop in the

school office area. This laptop will allow you to logon to Compass to print off permission

forms for excursions, to provide approvals for absences and to book Parent/Teacher

interviews.

Attendance

SMS is being used to confirm with families that their child is not at school when the morning rolls are

marked.

This means at 9.30am, if your child has not arrived at school and you have not informed the school via

Compass that day or prior to the day, an automated SMS will be sent to you as confirmation that your

child is in your care and not at school.

We have a number of StickyBeaks Lunch Bags for sale if you would like to purchase one.

Cost: $12.50 each.

These are lunch bags that are handy for frequent lunch orders from the school

canteen. They have a small pocket for money/change and a few other features.

Please visit the school office if you would like to purchase one.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a

temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for financial

assistance from the CSEF (Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund). A

special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and

refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use

towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips,

camps and sporting activities.

The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125.

Whole Day Absences

Parents are responsible for keeping up-to-date approvals for their children’s absences on Compass. A

short message will appear above your newsfeed – please click on the link where you will see a list of times

that your child was absent from school.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures

Students who arrive ‘LATE to’ or ‘LEAVE EARLY from’ the school must also have “approvals” logged by

parents. Please note that these approvals can only be recorded after the fact as they are “time

stamped” by Compass. Parents/Carers are not to pre-approve these partial day absences.

All students who arrive late to school must report to the office to ensure they are not marked as absent

for the first session; parents will need to accompany the students on these occasions as we are unable to

take responsibility for students as they walk from the car into the school grounds. Similarly students must

always be signed out by a parent or carer who is listed as a student contact. If your child is being signed

out by someone who is not authorised to do so, that adult must bring a letter of authority with them.

If you don’t already have the Compass App on your phone, here is how you go about it:

Type “Compass School Manager” into the search area.

Get / Download / Install onto your Device.

Allow Push Notifications? – YES (a thousand times YES!!!)

If your personal details change at any time during the year, please inform the office via email

health and has a positive impact on learning.

A Little About Me

I started at Templestowe Park in 2019 teaching Grade 1 and now have the privilege of teaching the whole

school. My background is in music teaching, performance and composition. I recognise my own primary

school years as some of the most important years that helped me develop my love for music. I am hoping

to give the same opportunity for our students here at Templestowe Park, in class and in our other

Performing Arts programs.

Our Term 1 Programs

The Grades 2-6 Choir, Grades 3&4 Vivace Voices Choir and Grades 3&4 Percussion Club will run this term.

Look out for my posts on Compass and in coming newsletters about performance opportunities for

students.

Lastly, a huge thank you goes to Jo Daly for the amazing work she has accomplished in her role as

Performing Arts teacher. Jo has left some very big shoes to fill and I wish her well in Grade 2 this year!

Welcome back to STEM in 2020! We have a busy term ahead, as Term 1

always is.

To start the year, the Preps and Grade 1s will be learning or refreshing some

of the basic skills used all the time in the Discovery Room.

The Grade 2s will be working on their class Science Talent Search projects.

This involves conducting an investigation of their choosing.

The Grade 3s and 5s will be learning about successful scientists. They will be making strong links to our

RRIPO program and examining what character strengths successful scientists have and how they use grit

and hope to overcome hurdles. Since it is usually the long-dead, white males from Europe and America

that get all the glory, the Grade 5s will be learning about scientists who have more diverse backgrounds,

such as women, people from historically less powerful countries, people of colour, people with disabilities

etc.

The Grade 4s and 6s will be working on their own independent science projects on a topic of their choosing.

Some students will choose to take on extra work with the goal of representing TPPS in the Science Talent

CAMP AUSTRALIA: February 2020

Hi to all and welcome back, I hope all families and teachers

had a wonderful Christmas break. I would like to welcome

all new families here at Templestowe Park; if you have any

queries about the after school care program, please drop in for a chat with any of the educators.

Term 1 will be packed with great activities for both the indoors and outdoors, and just a reminder to bring

your hat - we will supply sunscreen.

For all new parents it’s a great idea to register with Camp Australia in case of emergencies or if you’re

running late. Enjoy the term.

Second-Hand and Lost & Found – School Uniforms - ONLY

Parents from the school have created a Templestowe Park “buy, swap and sell” group on Facebook in an

effort to help families locate lost and found jackets and other items of uniform; it will also be a place to

sell off old uniforms. We encourage you to look at the group to see if it helps you in any way.

The school’s Uniform Shop will continue to sell any second-hand items

that have previously been given to them, but all future items will be
