Here are ways to help your child practice skills while having fun! Day 1 Name This week we’re Reading Sam, Come Back! Talking About What pets need Learning About Short a; Consonant Pattern ck Character and Setting Write these words on a sheet of paper: man, men, can, had, lad, run, ran, cat, cot, bat. Read each word aloud. Have your child tell you if the word has the short a sound. If it does, have your child write it and read it aloud. Write these words on a sheet of paper: back, sack, pack, rack, tack. Have your child read the words. Then have him or her act out the word as you guess it. Day 2 Copy these words onto cards: my, way, come, on, in. Tell your child these are “Boing” words. Read a story together. If a “Boing” word is read, your child should jump up and yell, “Boing!” Day 3 Write each spelling word on a card: at, can, cat, back, dad, am, bat, mad, ran, sack. Have your child sort the words according to his or her own rules. Then have him or her spell each word. Day 4 This week your child is learning about the characters and setting in a story.
