A woman is worried about her daughter who likes to wander off into the forest by
herself. When she asks her daughter why she does this, she tells her mother that she
goes into the woods to find God. Mom tells her that God is the same everywhere, so
why bother going into the woods to find God? The daughter answers that God may
be the same everywhere, but that she is different in the woods.
This variation on a Chasidic tale is good preparation for the upcoming Holy Days.
For many of us, the Holy Days are one of the most intensive spiritual periods of our
year. We come for many different reasons, but what we all have in common as we sit
together in our Sanctuary, is that we are in a different place---physically and
spiritually.
The girl in the story says she feels differently in the forest, by which she means that
she must do something other than her usual routine to find God. It is my hope that
our time together these Holy Days in the “forest” of our Sanctuary will help all of us
find what we are looking for as we step out of our day to day lives.
Being together with so many other people, many of whom we know well, others
whom we do not, creates a unique atmosphere not easily found elsewhere. The
melodies, the prayers, the excitement at looking ahead to a New Year, the good and
not-so-good memories of the past year, all come together to help us feel differently
than we do anywhere else. That, in turn can put us in the right frame of mind to ask
ourselves what we need to feel connected to the Divine presence in the universe.
What imbues us with the feeling that there is something transcendent about
existence? What enables us to reflect on the deeper questions—why are we here?
What are we making of our lives? What are our stated priorities and what do we
prioritize? How much good are we doing in the world? What do we need to do to
change in the coming year?
Change is never easy, and that is why, believe it or not, I hope we find being at
services more challenging than enjoyable. If we go through services feeling
uncomfortable (and not just because we are hungry!) that is a sign that we are
wrestling with ourselves. If we find ourselves feeling like we have fallen short, that
means we are being honest with ourselves. If we leave services convinced that we can
be a bit better than we were last year and committed to working hard to actually
making ourselves better, than we know services have made a difference.
At the New Year, we wish each other a Shanah Tovah. “Shanah” means “year” but it
also means “change.” “Tovah” means “good.” So we can translate this greeting not
just as “A good year” but as “a good change.”
I hope that all of us can make 5778 a year of meaningful and positive change.
L’Shanah Tovah!
Rabbi Laurence W. Groffman

A reminder that installing a personalized brick in
Temple Sholom’s Jubilee Walkway is a wonderful way to
commemorate a birth, wedding, anniversary and any
other occasion or accomplishment.
Dedicated bricks will make a terrific gift for life
cycle events for those who say “Don’t buy me anything, I
don’t need anything.”
By honoring yourself or those you love, you also
support the congregation and the bricks will be there to
be seen for a long time. Engraved bricks are $136.00 each.
Ask the temple office for an application.

As the warm summer temperatures begin to end and the cooler days arrive we’re excited to begin the second half of
our co-presidency. Our Clergy have been preparing for the High Holy Days which will be here before we know it. Our
committees have been hard at work planning this year’s events and the calendar is filling up. The religious school is fully
staffed and looking forward to welcoming the kids back to school for a year full of meaningful Jewish learning
experiences. Our youth groups, TaSTY & TaSTY Jr are gearing up for a busy year of programs and events.
Please join us for our second annual Back to Shul Shabbat Service, Friday September 8th
. The BBQ begins at 5:00
pm, Shabbat Services at 6:30 pm followed by the Oneg. So, grab a hotdog, sides and lemonade, catch up with friends
and introduce yourself to our new members and welcome them into our Temple Family.
Religious School Open House Sunday September 10th
10:00 am -12:00 pm. Introduce yourself to Moreh Michael,
see the school and meet other families. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend or two.
Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast sponsored by The Brotherhood of Temple Sholom served immediately following the
conclusion of Yom Kippur services Saturday, September 30th
. Please join us for this beautiful spread.
Consider volunteering for a committee or a specific task that doesn’t require a large time commitment. Please get
involved and take advantage of all that your membership in Temple Sholom has to offer. If you need help figuring out
where to get involved please contact JoAnn Pine, our new VP of Engagement. We know there’s something for
everyone.
In short, we feel we’re in a great place, literally and figuratively, and we don’t take it for granted. Please give
generously this year when asked during our High Holy Day campaign. Membership dues alone don’t cover operating
expenses. We rely on the generosity of our members to fill this gap.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are quickly approaching. We look forward to seeing you at services and wish you and
your family a very happy and healthy L’Shana Tovah.
Shalom!

My teacher, Cantor Robert Abelson, would begin every coaching with “Don’t let me catch you singing.” Of course,
having a voice with secure technique and a clean sound is my aim as a musician which is why I take regular voice lessons.
However, as a cantor, the quality of the voice is not enough. It is more important for me to connect with the words, the
emotions of the community and the service, and to fill a deeper spiritual meaning which mere words cannot express. The
music adds a layer of complexity and interpretation, which we call “musical midrash.”
Cantor Abelson, a master musician with over 60 years under his belt as a Cantor, understands all of these levels of the
music and the text, but he warns his students not to get lost in the music itself. We are prayer leaders first with music as
our guide. At my disposal are musical settings ranging from hundreds of years old to freshly published works. I carefully
choose settings based on what we as a community “need.” For instance, over the summer I recognized that most Reform
synagogues suddenly become B’nai Mitzvah students every time we chant V’ahavta even though we know the meaning.
I have pledged this year to have us connect to all the words we speak and sing—to fill our prayers with meaning. This is
not simply a chance to show off my voice; rather, I am expanding our congregational repertoire. To paraphrase my
teacher: Don’t let me catch you praying without intention!
I am thrilled to work with Rabbi Groffman, a rabbi who “gets” it. Over the past year, we planned our High Holy Days
using our new book, Mishkan HaNefesh, with this spirit in mind. The intention began with Debbie Friedman’s glorious
composition, “The Time Is Now,” as a form of call to prayer. Each musical setting, each English passage, each explanation
or teaching carried Debbie’s idea of stopping time to recognize the specialness of this moment. Fortunately, the
passages of Mishkan HaNefesh build on these intentions.
A pop singer recently canceled his tour for personal reasons. His sincere, typed letter appeared on all the social
media outlets spelling errors intact. He perceived his errors as “special imperfections.” Perhaps the changes in our High
Holy Day services this year will help us to understand our own special imperfections and accept them. This is a message
I teach to our B’nai Mitzvah children, to embrace our special imperfections, improve on them where possible, and find
personal satisfaction. Mishkan HaNefesh embraces those special imperfections—please enjoy the interpretive poetry for
our traditional texts. The Mishkan T’filah series, of which our new High Holy Day book is a part, represents the
contemporary understanding of our liturgy and interpretation. We do not go to synagogue to hear depressing poetry,
but rather we go to be uplifted and inspired for our week and year to come. The entire series integrates emotion, poetry,
music, and meditation seamlessly.
Next time you attend a service, tell me what inspired you. I do not want to hear about the quality of my voice—that
means you caught me singing rather than praying. After you tell me, tell others and bring them to a service to
experience that moment. Be prepared this year to find new inspiration in a familiar text or a new melody for a familiar
prayer.
Cantor Feibush Please see my High Holy Day choir rehearsal schedule on page 9.
Cantor Feibush
“Legacy. What is legacy? It is planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, “The World Was Wide Enough” from “ Hamilton”
Alexander Hamilton sings these words while dying after being shot by Aaron Burr in the acclaimed show
“Hamilton.” When I heard them sung in the San Francisco production last June, I was taken with how applicable they
are to so many situations. Teachers leave a legacy when they sow a love of learning in children they will probably never
know as adults. Authors, whose words sometimes profoundly affect their readers, are not likely to know the impact
they’ve had on peoples’ lives.
And so it is with those who have decided to leave a gift to Temple Sholom in their estates. They are helping to
sustain our congregation into the future, a future they will be unlikely to witness first hand.
As the High Holy Days draw near, the congregation of today and the congregation of tomorrow want to thank the
Legacy Circle members in our Community of Giving Booklet, distributed at High Holy Day services, for their
commitment to our future.
Please contact Marlene Tuch to discuss becoming a Legacy Circle member.

As the warm breezes of summer morph into the beautiful colors of autumn, I would like to take this opportunity to
welcome all of our religious school families and their children back to our school. On behalf of our entire veteran
returning staff, Madrichim, and our newly appointed VP for Education, Iris Bucchino, we can’t wait to meet and greet
you on Tuesday, September 12th
for our K-3rd
Graders and Wednesday, September 13th
for our 4th

graders and
Wednesday evening classes. Please note, our newly appointed VP for Engagement, Jo Ann Pine will be in our Oneg
Room, available to meet, greet, and facilitate relationships, during school hours for any and everyone who wants to
grab a cup of coffee and snack, to schmooze and be together.
Tzedakah, social action and Gemilut Hasadim (the Repair of our World), are themes which resonate throughout our
school’s curriculum. This past year, and in accordance with these very important thematic components, our school
raised over $700.00 which our students donated to the following charities they voted upon within their classes which
included:
Finally, and on a personal note, this past October, my home synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom of Florida, NY, a URJ
affiliated synagogue, suffered through an incredible negative experience whereby our Synagogue’s Cemetery, which I
oversee as a co-chair, was violated and desecrated with virulent anti-Semitic iconographic symbols. After almost a year,
we are proud to announce that we will be formally rededicating our cemetery with a ceremony on Sunday,
September 17th
– time to be determined. As such, I would be honored if you were able to attend this ceremony to be
held within my home synagogue’s community – please see me for details.
On behalf of our wonderful staff and congregational leadership, welcome back to TSWE Religious School and the
start of a spiritually engaging New Year.

Be A Buddy Family! SIMPLE and REWARDING
We are looking for a few Religious School Families who wish to help our
newest members feel welcome.
Over this summer, the following families joined us!
*Bios and pictures are on our Facebook page and Weekly emails. Please check them out!
And we’re thrilled to welcome Liz Hinkis to our Membership Committee.
She joined Temple Sholom just two years ago and became a “Buddy” this past year.
See our program below.
Liz Hinkis grew up in Manhattan and her husband Jason grew up in Matawan, N.J.
In fact, Jason went to the same high school as Rabbi Groffman, although they didn't
know each other at the time.
Liz and Jason have three children, all of whom attend the Temple Sholom religious
school. Alex is in 4th grade and twins Max and Maya are in 2nd grade. Their family loves water parks and amusement
parks and have been to most in a two hour radius. All three kids play soccer so they cheer each other on at games.
Liz and Jason both enjoy reading and writing. Liz used to write a column for Montclair Life and Leisure.
When asked why she volunteered to help with membership, Liz said: “My day job is sales so it was a natural fit. Just
have to get used to making sales without commission!”
Jason and Liz have both enjoyed the sense of community they’ve experienced at Temple Sholom. “Temple Sholom
does an outstanding job of involving kids in social activities and our kids have made good friends. It is a very family
friendly environment.”

As we get ready to start a new year, I’d like to thank
ALL the Caring Connection volunteers! This organization could not thrive without your support!
The Caring Connection helps temple members during transitional times in their lives. Our committee volunteers provide
support after a happy event or a traumatic event. Your involvement could be as easy as a making a phone call.
Volunteers can help to deliver or prepare a meal, or help a member with transportation needs.
Make this organization what you and your family want it to be. A great mitzvah project may be to visit or spend time
with an elderly person. Or maybe bring a pre-paid Shalach Manot basket to a temple member who can’t drive. Just be
involved. It’s easy. You decide how involved you and your family will become.
If you would like to become involved, please contact me through the temple or
email me at [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who thinks of us through a tribute. Your generosity helps us fund
programs, send meals to those in need, and present other activities throughout the year.

Happy Anniversary..
For more than four decades our congregation has admired
and enjoyed the beauty and artistry of the
Tree of Life Sculpture that graces the main lobby.
Sisterhood had continued the temple’s tradition of commemorating special occasions with
Our New Tree of Life… “A Grove of Trees’, located in the original front foyer of the temple.
This tree is growing and still has many leaves available.
If you have a special occasion, Birth, Marriage, Anniversary, Bar or Bat Mitzvah,

Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always
appropriate, welcomed and provide important revenue.
Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially
when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences, and
at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our
congregation.
