Shalom Friends,

Benjamin Weisbein grew up in Temple Sinai. Here he attended religious school, celebrated his bar mitzvah, participated in confirmation classes and was confirmed. Benjamin was bright, energetic and loved. He had traveled to Israel and was immensely proud of his Jewish identity. Tragically Benjamin died in a car accident in August of 1992 at the age of seventeen. Shortly after Benjamin’s death his parents Joel and Nancy Hart wanted to do something significant to honor his memory. After meeting with them it was decided to establish a scholarship program to help high school youth travel to Israel. For the past nineteen years The Benjamin Weisbein Fund has enabled countless Temple youth to experience the wonder and beauty of Israel.

This year three of our youth, Amy Rixon, Paige Wolinksy and Elana Valastro, will be visiting Israel with the assistance of the Weisbein Fund. Their experiences will forever change their lives and strengthen their Jewish identities. Upon returning to the States they will be sharing their experiences during Sabbath worship and in the religious school.

I truthfully cannot imagine a more fitting and beautiful way to remember Benjamin than through this wonderful program. The Harts have blessed us with their kindness and in so doing have kept the memory of their wonderful son alive.

In Peace, Rabbi James S. Glazier

EVA WIENER

I was born in Berlin, Germany and at 10 months of age,

in May 1939, my parents took me to board the luxury

liner, St. Louis. The ship, departing from Hamburg

for Havana, Cuba, with 937 Jewish refugees, would be

bringing us closer to our ultimate destination, the United

States. While the ship was at sea, the landing permits

issued us by Cuban officials were declared invalid. The

passengers were not allowed to enter either Cuba or

the United States and the ship was returned to Europe.

After four weeks aboard the St. Louis, only Great

Britain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands agreed

to accept passengers. My parents and I were fortunate

to be assigned to England, where we lived until our

emigration to the United States in May 1946. Most of

the passengers who were assigned to the other countries

did not survive the war.

The story of the St. Louis is one from which we must

learn an important lesson. The anti-semitism that

permeated so many countries of the free world, such

as the United States and Canada, fostered the plight of

this ship. The world was prepared to turn a deaf ear

and lock its doors against these desperate and innocent

people who were being shunned simply because they

were Jews.

Aleinu Series: Voyage of the Damned When: June 4th 6:30 pmWhere: Natalie & Mitch Fleischman 61 Pinnacle Drive So. Burlington VT 05403 598-1488On May 13, 1939 the luxury liner St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, one of the last ships to leave Nazi Germany before WWII erupted. Aboard were 937 Jews-some had already been in concentration camps-who believed they had bought visas to enter Cuba and avoid Nazi persecution due to Anti-Semitism. The voyage of the damned had begun and a terrible political struggle ensued with the Nazi Government trying to show the world that no country would take a ship to shore of Jewish passengers. Join us when Eva Wiener, the youngest passenger to board the St. Louis, and a cousin of Natalie and Mitch Fleischman, relates the story of her family’s journey from Berlin, to Cuba, to London and finally the United States. As the evening concludes we will watch the movie “ The Voyage of the

Damned” staring Faye Dunaway, Max von Sydow, James Mason, Orsen Wells, Julie Harris and Lee Grant.

Shalom Chaveirim:

This May marks Israel’s 63rd Birthday. As in past years, our Jewish Community gathers together with a joint Yom Haatzmaut/Israel Independence Day celebration. Each year Temple Sinai’s and Ohavi Zedek Synagogue’s schools come together with activities for children & adults.

This year is no different. On May 11th, from 4:00-5:30 all the children will have activities at OZ. At 5:30 everyone comes together for a community sing. While the bulk of the activities are geared toward the children, we can always use adults to help supervise the activities. You needn’t RSVP if you plan to come to hang out and sing. We’d love to have you and we hope you and your family are able to join us for this joyous community celebration.

I also would like to tell you about other events coming up this month & next.

May 14th is Teacher Appreciation Shabbat. We have a wonderful staff of dedicated, hard-working teachers. This year we are holding a special Shabbat morning service & luncheon to honor them. Most of our staff are Temple members who’ve been with us for years and a couple are young adults just venturing out in life who bring a wonderful energy to our community. Our students are helping to lead the service and read the Torah.

Please join us in supporting our wonderful students and teachers.

For those with children in the school, May 18th & 19th are our last days of school. We’ve had a wonderful year and value each student and family. I hope you and your child will give us feedback. Please watch your email for information about Early Bird Registration for next year.

And just because the school year is ending that doesn’t mean our activities end.

On June 7th we have three High School students being confirmed. These youngsters have gone through our Religious School and continued in our Chai School studying towards Confirmation. Not sure what that means? Come join us and find out. The Confirmation ceremony takes place during Shavuot services at 7:30 p.m. and is followed by an oneg. Our three Confirmands are: Brian Charash, Jenny Rehkugler and Charlie Sheppard.

June 29th – They’re back! The Israel Scout Friendship Caravan returns to town with another rousing show. These 16 year-old good-will ambassadors travel around North America spreading song, dance and good cheer. As in years past, I will need families to host a scout for one night. If you’ve never done it before, you’re in for a treat. If you’ve done it before, you know how exciting it is for your child to make that connection to Israeli teens. Priority is given to families with children.

Wishing you a wonderful aviv/spring,

Judy Alexander
