WINTER IS COMING – GET READY FOR SUMMER!
OSRUI DIRECTOR, JERRY KAYE, TO VISIT TKA ON NOVEMBER 2ND
As the chilly winds of November arrive, thoughts around here inevitably turn to preparations for next Summer! Studies tell us that there is no more significant experience to enhance Jewish identity in our children than time spent at a Jewish summer camp. While there are many excellent opportu-nities for quality recreation or specialty camps in Michigan and the surrounding areas, Temple Kol Ami has long encouraged our member families to consider sending their children to Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI) in Oconomowoc, Wiscon-sin. And in 2009, there will be a lovely new swimming pool dedi-cated there . . . OSRUI is one of the summer camps sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism (some Detroit area families also attend Camp George in Ontario, and our High School Youth Group Leaders are encouraged to spend time at the Kutz Campus for Living Judaism in Warwick, New York, where I serve on Faculty). OSRUI is our camp – a portion of our 'dues' to the Union help provide this opportunity. My own children have all attended OSRUI – and loved it! (Several have also served there as counselors and staff mem-bers while in college.) Other TKA families have been multi-generational participants in Oconmowoc – and I'll be glad to
put you in touch with them to discuss their expeiences. It's a very special place, with an amazing, inspirational environ-ment of living Jewishly for weeks or months over the summer. Sports, arts, hiking, new friends, old friends, campers and staff from all over the world, music, Hebrew, boating . . . and, did I mention: a new swimming pool, in addition to the lake? (Our Temple member, Elayne Peters, who is the Waterfront Director, is VERY EXCITED!) We want you and your children or grandchildren to be a part of the Olin Sang Ruby community! Both the Temple and the Reform Movement offer generous financial assistance (for the other URJ Camps, as well). Just speak with me or Andee Liberman. But don't delay too long – several of the OSRUI units and sessions fill up quickly, and space may be limited.
Jerry Kaye
OSRUI's Director
will be at Temple Kol Ami on Sunday morning, November 2nd,
to present the Camp Video,
meet with our Religious School Students, and talk about Union
Camps with any interested families.
All are welcome!
Jerry Kaye is an outstanding educator and storyteller, having
been recognized by the Chicago Board of Jewish Education,
Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, and Beit
Hat'futsot (the Museum of the Jewish People, affiliated with Tel
Aviv University). In addition to directing OSRUI, he consults
to communities and congregations throughout North America,
and is the host and moderator of “Sanctuary”, a Chicago tele-
vision series focused on Jewish communal issues.

Have you stopped by to visit our new school wing? Please stop by and see our new amazing school facility!! Thank you to everyone who has supported this project. Did you know we have a very active Religious School board ? The Board is a valuable asset to the functioning of the Religoius School. Thank you to everyone who sits on the board. Thank you to Debbie Himelhaus who wrote the information below. The Religious School Board is off to a great start this year! The members of our Board are: Andee Liber-man, Dana Patchak, Nancy Evanson, Sharon Spilkin, Julie Flashner, Toni Kasander, Sue Roberts, Steve Kendler, Amy Klein, and Debbie Himelhoch. The goals of the Religious School Board are to facili-tate communication between the director of the school, the Executive Board and parents, to discuss budget needs/wants, to discuss curriculum, and to create fund raising events that support the school. We meet as a Board once each month. The Board will also be holding meetings with parents during the school year. We hope that you will contact any of the Board members with ideas, feedback, or questions that you may have. If you haven't had a chance to visit our new school building, we hope that you will take a few minutes to
stop in and see this beautiful facility. The faculty, staff, and children are thrilled to have school at TKA. We hope that you will "shower" us with a gift of school supplies, toys, books, or a donation to help fill our shelves with new items for our children. Please contact the school office to let them know if you are planning on purchasing something, or would like the school to purchase something from your family. The Board would like to share special thanks to Andee Liberman for her guidance, creativity, and months of work that she gave to help create such an amazing school for TKA. Thank you to everyone that helped pack us up and move us in as well! Our first fund raising event was BINGO on October 26th. I hope that you and your family and friends were able to join us in this fun day. During the year we will continue to have many other fund raising events. Cur-rently we are also involved in our an-nual cookie dough sale. Yum! Look for upcoming events in The Voice, on our website, and in flyers from Reli-gious School. Your consistent sup-port is needed and appreciated.
Mrs. Liberman
It is our pleasure to inform you of our continued participation in the Opening the Doors Special Education Partnership Program with the Federa-tion’s Alliance for Jewish Education. It is a pro-gram designed to meet the special learning
needs of the students currently enrolled in our religious school, As a partnership school, we
receive educational support services and profes-sional opportunities from Alliance and funds allo-
cated from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
To achieve our goals, we have on our teaching staff Hope Bocker who has a Masters Degree in Special Education. She has begun working with several students and will be consulting with our
classroom teachers regarding specific recommendations and strategies for our diverse learners, so they may succeed and receive a meaningful Jewish Education. We are quite ex-cited about this partnership, which enables us to
continue to provide a positive educational experience for all our students.

A Message From Rabbi Emeritus Ernst J. Conrad
For the first time we were able to have some
time set aside prior to the Yizkor sercice on
Yom Kippur for “A Time For Music and Reflec-
tion.” I compiled and prepared music and read-
ing for what I hope will be an annual event.
Thank you: Tiffany Steyer, Soloist; Tamara
Sherman, violin; David Magidson and Diane
Siegel DiVita, readers.
Thanks to Leslie Samet for her invaluable help
in typing the program.
We look forward to bringing you lots of good
and interesting music during the year.

Once again Temple Kol Ami will be part of an Interfaith Celebration of Thanksgiving to take place at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17567 Hubbell St, at Outer Drive, on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 7:30pm. The location is across from
Old Sinai Hospital; it has 2 parking lots and is well-lit. This marks the 22nd annual occasion for about a dozen religious and cultural communities to unite in worship and celebrate. This year’s theme is named: From Every Tribe, Race and Nation: We, the People. The event is planned by an Interfaith Committee, which meets half a dozen times before the actual event search-ing for proper reading, music, and dance, highlighting the contribution of each constituent. As in the past, there will be several calls to worship and a Hindu dance invoking God’s presence upon the as-sembly. Reading, usually involving the congregation, and musical selections will be chosen and offered by Buddhist, Muslim, Bahai, Roman Catholic, Protestant, Sikh, and Jewish and Native American communities. The celebration which lasts about an hour and a half includes a presentation by the Mosaic Youth Theatre Players, a project involving high school youth, that has greatly contributed to build bridges between cultural,
religious and racial groups which differ. Customarily, food (canned) is brought to be shared with the Southeast Michigan Food Bank, and a collec-tion for the homeless of the area is gathered. The celebration concludes with a social hour to meet old and new friends and acquaintences. As a rule, food selections reflect the nationalities participating and are vegetarian. TKA members and their children are cordially urged to be part of this Thanksgiving Celebration. The Reverend Daniel Appleyard, rector of Christ Church, Dearborn is chairperson of this annual event.

It has been a busy time for all of TKA this fall! TKA’s KATY Kids hosted a Kallah (conclave) of Temple Youth Leaders from all over Michigan at TKA. Our Sisterhood under-wrote part of the cost and Marlene Abramson, Estelle Gladstone and I helped serve lunch and dinner to the wonderful group of about 35 young people on Saturday, September 20th. We were awed by how polite and appre-ciative they were. It was, indeed, our pleasure to be there to help out that day. Many of our Sisterhood members attended the Storahtelling and Selichot Service the evening of Sept. 20th and we all kvelled at the dedication of our brand new Religious School on Sunday, Septem-ber 21st! The Sisterhood Annual Paid-up Dinner(October 23rd) has always been an enjoyable evening. Everyone who attended was served a delicious dinner prepared by Sisterhood’s entire board. We had entertainment and door prizes donated by some of our board mem-bers! Everyone had a wonderful time. There’s still time to join Abbe Smith the author of Case of a Life-
time for dinner at 5PM on Thursday, November13th at Uptown Grille for dinner! $15.00 pre-set menu. Call Marlene Abramson at 248-991-1993 to reserve a spot. After dinner we will gather at The West Bloomfield JCC to hear Abbe speak at 7:00 PM. On Mon-day, November 24th some of our members in conjunction with TKA’s Social Action Committee will be going to help at Yad Ezra.
Please call Eileen Higer if you are interested 248-661-9545! Watch for upcoming info on our December program – a Soup Ex-change and Book Review! Just a quick note: Dalia Keen, my Vice President of Fund Raising, has taken a hiatus from her position because of a family health problem. We all want Dalia and her family to know they are in our thoughts and we wish them well! I just want to extend thanks to my Executive Board, Meryl Hirsch-land, Debbie Lecours, Carole Lewis, Marcia Persin, Gail Raben and Nancy Siegel for their hard work. My General Board have all been hard at work for months. Sue Ehrlich is working diligently on Entertainment Books. Sydelle Isaacs has shared her knowledge of the Y.E.S. Fund! Eileen Higer is doing a great job as Sunshine Chair and sending greetings to our Sisterhood members. Andrea Wojcik is working to set up the Phone Tree to announce events and emergency cancellations. Florence Vinsky and Cindy Faber work together through the year at Bortz Healthcare Center. Finally, thanks to Marlene Abramson for her tireless work as Publicity Chairperson. We wouldn’t be as successful a Sisterhood if we didn’t all work together so well. Next month I will profile the rest of my Board. A huge thank you to all!

A Note From The Brotherhood
We’re Taking Orders Now!
The TKA Brotherhood had a quiet summer, with our main event being attending a Tiger-Blue Jay baseball game on August 12th. The Tigers lost, but we still enjoyed our-selves at this family-oriented event. On September 21st, the Brotherhood hosted a breakfast for a group of teens who were visiting TKA as members of NFTY. A big thank-you goes out to Jerry Gers and Bill Faber, as well as to all of the Brotherhood members who helped prepare and serve breakfast. Congratulations also go out to Chuck Freedman and our league championship TKA Brotherhood softball team. We are starting to program for the coming year. We hope to have some meetings with speakers of interest to Jew-ish men, a joint program sponsored by Brotherhood and the Social Action Committee, a December program such as Not So Silent Night or last year’s successful dinner and Second City show, and before Passover, a Men’s Seder. Last year’s seder was well received by those who at-tended, and sharing our views of the role of men in the Reform movement, the Temple, and community led to some interesting discussions. The Men’s Haggadah
issued by the Men of Reform Judaism provided an excel-lent foundation for exploring these issues. Speaking of the MRJ, I had the opportunity to attend both the annual Board of Trustees meeting last June in Delray Beach, Florida, and a leadership training and MRJ Executive Committee meeting in September in Newark, New Jersey. The opportunity to meet and interact with other Brotherhood leaders, to participate in Shabbat ser-vices and pray, and to learn about our new Abba-ben-zeyde (Fathers, Sons, Grandfathers) initiative was ener-gizing. Please consider this an open invitation to the men of TKA to join us in working together, praying together, and play-ing together to better understand our heritage and to make our temple community a welcoming and comfort-able place for Jewish men.

Notes from the Social Action Committee
Observing the foremost Jewish tradition of Tikkum Olam, TKA has a long history of involvement in the community. We are known as the Social Action temple for a reason. We strongly believe in Repairing the World. As we grow and expand our facility, we are embracing the philosophy of building “green”. The aim is Leadership in Engergy and Environmental Design, (LEED) certification.
The staff of TKA helps by recycling paper and cardboard, bottles and cans, and printer cartridges. We will no longer be using styrofoam products. All paper is recycled, so look for the containers marked for that purpose. Bring in your empty printer cartridges on your next visit here and help us work together to save the environment.
This past June, we participated in the West Bloomfield Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser. We had 26 team members that helped raised money and walked that day. We are proud to announce that our temple team raised over $3,000. Thank you to all who came and support this important effort.
The 2nd Wednesday of each month we have TKA members help at the Capuchin Kitchen. For those who don’t know what Capuchin Kitchen is, it is a soup kitchen in Detroit. Thank you Lee Schottenfels for organizing this. We just had a Blood Drive that had a great turnout, and we thank Dave Henig.
Steven Kendler left again for Santia Domingo, Dominican Republican to help out with approximately 34 other people to provide health care services to the people there.
We are starting Mitzvah Sundays throughout the year instead of just one day of Mitzvah. The first Sunday is November 16 from 3:15 to 5:15 at the Meer Apartments. The residents will be having a pizza party and our volunteers will be assisting with set up, serving and clean up. There will be entertainment. This is a great mitzvah for young and old. Please contact Eileen Higer for details, or better yet, check out our TKA website (www.tkolami.org) for more information.
Sisterhood and SAC are teaming up together on November 24, the Monday before Thanksgiving. We will be preparing and giving away turkeys at Yad Ezra. You can speak with Abby Pook or Eileen Higer about how to help.
There is an annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, November 26 at 7:30 PM at the Westminster Presbyterian Church this year. All are welcome.
In February we are planning to program an activity with Kadima clients to celebrate Tu B’Shevat. In June of 2009, we will once again, participate and have a team in the Relay for Life.
And lastly, The Social Action committee is always looking for fresh ideas and projects, as well as new members. Because we enjoy what we are doing, our meetings are always fun and spirited. The Social Action Committee

and get a better idea of all that TKA has to offer!
We hope you’ll stay for Bagels & Basics at 11:00!
