Temple Hayes is a New Thought visionary

without borders, and she’s here to help us wake up and create a world that works through all of us.

“We are not designed to grow old,” says Temple Hayes in her new book, “When Did You Die? Eight Steps to Stop Dying Every Day and Start Waking Up.” “We are created to grow up and out as beings of light.

“Some would call this the lightness of being or taking yourself lightly. Whether or not you believe in the Bible, when the Creator said, ‘Let there be light,’ the Creator was talking about you. Even Jesus tells a parable in which he reminds us not to hide our light. We are that light, and, as long as we hide it, we are hiding from ourselves. We are dying a little rather than thriving a lot. As long as we stand in the way of our light rather than expressing as a sparkle, we are merely a shadow of who we could be.”

Through is the operative word in Hayes’s mission: creating a world that works through everyone. It’s a central theme in her book, and it’s also key to what may be the most important step in her program: How to Walk Into Your Life by Walking Through Your Life.

As an example, the spiritual dynamo shares how she emerged from the shadows of her youth to freely and openly embrace her own authenticity. She has faced what she calls the “deep woundology” of her childhood. She came of age in the 1970s as a gay woman and openly shares and celebrates with her community her 28 years as a recovering alcoholic.

While the events in her life have led to emotional growth, it is Hayes’s own spiritual evolution that has made her a prominent leader in the New Thought movement. Since 1991, Hayes has been both an ordained Science of Mind and Unity minister. She believes and prac-tices the inclusiveness of New Thought spirituality. “We are all cousins, family with the same social theology.”

This is the “field” of understanding Rumi wrote of that was “out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right doing” where the divisions of language, color, religion and even New Thought no longer make sense. It is the idea of “no heaven” John Lennon asked us to imagine over 45 year ago.

The more we evolve in New Thought, the greater the reality that our world will be without boundaries or limitations. “It’s a change,” she says, “that has to happen at both an individual and a higher level of consciousness. To love, we have to love ourselves. To have peace, the peace that passes all understanding, it has to begin within each one of us.”

In addition to serving as CEO and spiritual leader at one of the largest Unity campuses, located in St. Petersburg, Florida, Hayes is an author, speaker, radio show host and, along with Centers for Spiritual Living’s spiritual leader and Science of Mind columnist Rev. Dr. Kenn Gordon, a member of the Leadership Council of Association for Global New Thought.

Put Your Whole Self Into LifeFor Hayes, life and death are not at two ends of the spectrum, once-

Are you excited about your spirituality and your purpose? Are you fully living in a place of trust and of

knowing that you are magnificent beyond words? On a deep level, you and I both know that we have been programmed

to believe a lot of things about life and God that simply aren’t true. If it isn’t true for you, yet you are still living as if it were so, then you will never be true to yourself and your life will not be true to you.

Make a list of the ways in which you have been automatically living, either for approval or because of an unwillingness to stop and make a new story. …

From the very beginning of our lives, we are not shown mirrors of validation for our feelings by looking into the hearts of our elders, our teachers and our helpers. Since our feelings are not validated and honored, we begin to doubt the truth that our feelings are telling us. We are trained from the very beginning in subtle ways to not trust ourselves.

When we face [our fear], we will replace it, yet this is not always easy because we carry such deep feelings that we don’t even realize they are present within us. I live by the understanding and daily prayer to forgive myself for my trespasses and to forgive those who have tres-passed against me. I also live by the longing to be totally impassioned and energized, responsible and empowered for my own life. When we live by this promise, the truth will always reveal itself to us. z

are not living life and honoring its value every day, then you are not thriving. You are drained and disconnected not only from yourself but from your family, friends and moments that are important to you. Your dreams are waiting on you to come true — your full potential. Nothing can come through you to make a difference. In other words, you have to awaken yourself to awaken the world.”

To move from passion to participation, Hayes asks us to look differently at the challenges in our lives. “We have this mass belief that whatever we go through causes us to be weary, to be tired. How many times have you said to yourself, ‘I made it through’ or ‘I survived’? We think we are less of a person. We diminish ourselves. The truth is that any situation that comes into our lives helps us create our sacred story and shows us who we are in our greatness.”

Moving From Passion to ParticipationAccording to Hayes, when you go through something, that is your

prayer to life. She likens it to the Hokey Pokey. “You don’t wait until your problems turn around and then put your whole self in. It doesn’t work like that. You put your whole self in first. And from your change of consciousness your problems diminish. Then, you are able to turn around. It’s a wholehearted approach to life and it’s the only way to live fully.” z
