Temple Beth Miria Temple Beth Miria Temple Beth Miria Temple Beth Miria Temple Beth Miriam m m March Newsletter Adar/Nisan 5770 Volume 58 No. 6 1 According to the Jewish calendar, this is the beginning of the Passover season. Indeed, if you look around the Jewish shops, there are advertisements for Pesach symbols, food, and objects. But, unlike the holiday shopping that takes place after Thanksgiving or even after Halloween in this country, the preparation for Pesach is not about making a profit on Black Friday or any other day. In fact, the preparation six weeks before Pesach is about getting ready for the holiday on a spiritual level. There are four special Shabbat tot that take place before Pesach. We celebrated the first one a few weeks ago that marked the beginning of the season. It was called Shabbat Shkalim and it refers to the 1/2 shekel that everyone over 20 years old in the Israelite camp had to give. The reason was threefold: first it was a way to support the maintenance and running of the Tabernacle, the place where the sacrifices were offered and the cultic center of the camp. Second, it was a way to count the total number of people who left Egypt and thirdly, it was a way to see how big an army was that could be mustered for defense. There is a Pesach lesson here. You see, even though we will be sitting down to our Seders and will be filled with joy reading from the Hagaddah, sharing stories and laughing at the joy of the Festival, there is some serious business to attend to before the holiday. And what is that serious business? As the special Shabbat teaches us, it is the time to be counted. We can’t celebrate the Exodus from Egyptian slavery as Jews if we don’t want to be counted as Jews in the first place. This is a profound lesson. I am often asked what Judaism is, especially by non-Jews. It is an almost impossible question to answer. It is not a religion because anyone who is born and raised a Jew is a Jew - although from a strict definition of Jewish law only someone born of a Jewish mother is Jewish or has converted. You will notice that this definition says nothing about belief. Judaism is not a race. Race is genetic and the fact is that Chinese Jews are just as Jewish as Puerto Rican or Tunisian Jews! So what is being Jewish? Being Jewish is belonging to a family. And, as is true in all families, there are different colors, different languages, different backgrounds and different levels of experience, knowledge, practice and commitment. But we are still a family. As we prepare for Pesach, we put ourselves firmly in the embrace of our Jewish family, past, present and future. But too often, there are Jews who don’t want to be counted. They have separated themselves from the community and will not support even the most basic of Jewish needs. They have no interest in the present, past and especially future of the Jewish people. Their covenantal connection to God disappeared a long time ago. But our tradition has never dismissed anyone. There is always a way back and the Jewish people will always welcome someone who, for a time, was not counted among the people. Presenting the 1/2 shekel in the desert was the way to be counted as sharing the faith and fate of the Jewish people. Presenting one’s self to the world as a Jew is today’s way of being counted. The strange tradition at the end of the Seder is the opening of the door to welcome in Elijah who will herald in the messianic era. But that is the second time the door is opened. The first time happens at the beginning of the Seder when we say “All who are hungry, let them come and eat. All who wish let them come and do Pesach with us.” I love this part of the Seder even more than opening the door for Elijah. Elijah is a hope and a distant hope that he or any other herald of the Messiah will come. But there is a real possibility that someone who needs a Seder, someone who wants once again to be counted will show up. To keep the door open is to say ‘Welcome Back’ and this Torah portion teaches us that that door is always open whether we are looking to enter once again or welcoming someone inside who has been wandering outside. There are lots of preparations for Pesach. The house needs to be cleaned and the dishes exchanged, the matzah bought and the Seder planned. And our tradition prepares us, too. It begins by asking us to present ourselves to God and to each other and to the Jewish people and ends by all of us leaving Egypt as one people with one God and one shared future. This year, let us be present. Let us all be accounted for. And let us all take upon ourselves the burden and responsibility and joy of redemption. Chag Sameach, a joyous Pesach season

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN- MARCH 2010 I just spent the day working and just hanging out at TBM's annual Purim Carnival. Not only was it a terrific day for the participants, all those school children with their bright and wild costumes, but the adults also enjoyed it immensely. We all had a great time watching the children really enjoying the Purim spirit, almost a huge Halloween party with a Jewish theme! The Purim carnival also showcased another Beth Miriam jewel: our senior Youth Group, known as SALTY or Shore Area Long Branch Temple Youth. SALTY was responsible for all facets of the Purim Carnival. Its members, all high school students, in grades 9 through 12, from high schools throughout Monmouth and northern Ocean County planned the event, constructed, set up, and ran the games, solicited gifts for the very successful gift auction, and cleaned up. The Carnival itself is a great example of the

cooperation of various facets of the TBM community coming together to assist each other. The Carnival's success is a tribute to the leadership of its president Julia Spector, the Carnival chair, Jennie LaLiberte, its advisor, Dee Ross as well as the Temple's Youth Committee, headed by Gary and Lois Pess, as well as all the dedicated SALTY members. Between the proceeds of the gift auction and the ticket sales and with the TBM Brotherhood supplying and cooking the food and donating its profits, SALTY raised over $2000.00 for its programs, incluidng the Midnight Run, which I will discuss. The members of SALTY also decided to donated the proceeds from the 50/50 to the David Zocchi Cancer Foundation, which was presented to them by former TBM president Nancy Conn-Levin. Of course, it goes without saying that the success was also due to the many Temple members who supported the efforts of SALTY by generously donating to the Gift Auction, participating in the 50/50 and buying the tickets. Thanks to all! SALTY also deserves a special recognition for another community based projected that it completed on January 23, 2010, the Midnight Run. The Midnight Run project brings food, clothing, blankets and toiletries to the homeless in New York. According to MidnightRun.org, their goal is " to forge a bond between housed and homeless people by establishing a foundation of sharing and caring from which solutions may evolve." Last year, our SALTY youth, though Dee Ross, piggybacked on the effort of Temple Shari Emeth of Manalapan and did the Run. This year on a cold Saturday night, January 23, 15 SALTY members as well as 10 members of TBM's Brotherhood participated in the Midnight Run, leaving Elberon at 9:00 pm, stopping at two locations on Park Avenue and at Penn Station to distribute meals, clothing, including coats, shoes, socks, shirts and sweatshirts and toiletries to New York's homeless and returning to the Temple at 4:30 am. That night was really the culmination of five months work, coordinated by SALTY member Haley Peckman, who solicited the donations, including 200 pairs of new shows donated by NAOT, an Israeli shoe company. Haley also spoke at services and wrote articles encouraging our members to donate. The response by our membership was overwhelming! Due to the generosity of all, Haley and other SALTY members spent hours sorting the donated clothes by size (and sex) in order to personalize the gifts to those less fortunate than us. Others helped that night making toiletry kits and packing dinners. According to Haley, one of the most touching aspects of the project was the outpouring of support from those who do not have children in SALTY. TBM members rose to the occasions to make sure that our youth group could try and make a tiny dent in the homeless problem. Again, this was another project, spearheaded by our Youth Group, with the assistance of adults and the general membership of our Temple, which made an impact and made a difference. I could go on and on about the dedication of our SALTY members and leaders, both adult and teenaged. The members are the future leaders of our community and of Judaism. Their care and concern for their community, as well as their respect and love for our Temple is truly inspiring. We can all help encourage our future leaders and SALTY by donating to the Beth Miriam funds that support the youth of our Temple: The Spector Family Camp Fund, the Pess Family Youth Fund, and the Berg Fund, which help subsidize participation in NFTY events, such as Winter and Fall Kallahs, encourage participation in URJ summer camps, such as Camp Harlam, and encourage our youth to attend leadership training. They are truly an investment in the future of our youth and Judaism. Thank you Brian D. Gillet

Erev Pesach March 29thPassover Begins March 30th,

Service at 10 AMNo School March 31st

The TBM Religious School has achieved another milestone. For the first time ever, report cards were sent home by email, with no major bugs!!Our teachers rose to the challenge of stepping outside their comfort zone anddid a great job learning a few new computer skills, and parents wereappreciative of our new method of communicating. In the process, we alsosaved printing and postage costs. Report cards are sent home twice a year. It isa way for teachers to convey to parents how students are doing, in a formal way. Each teacher’s email address was embedded in the report card, and parents areencouraged to take note of it and feel free to stay in touch with any feedback. We are so proud to stay current technologically in this way. Did you know that the Jewish Federation touches our school in a direct way? I ama member of the Federation sponsored Council on Jewish Education (CJE). Wemeet regularly through out the year, touching base with other area religiousschool educators, and planning various programs, among them the Arad teen

Exchange. This month we had a learning session of how to handle medical emergencies in our schools. Ourguest was Dr. Joel Edman, who spoke to us about the correct way to administer an Epi-pen, what to do if a childfaints, how to handle an asthma attack, and how to legally protect ourselves and our students during medicalemergencies. If you’ve ever wondered what Federation does for you, you can check their website: http://jewishmonmouth.org and see how Federation helps. Plans are still in formation for our mini capital campaign to raise funds for the remodeling of our Religious Schoolwing. All parents will be asked to participate in some way, and as always every donation, no matter the size, willcount greatly towards accomplishing our goal. Our mantra for when anything ever goes wrong with our building(like 58 degree temperatures -or less-in some classrooms on the coldest days) is “next year this will not be aproblem”. The plans look really exciting, and the work on our part is going to be hard, what with moving in andout of the building and getting everything ready for the opening in the fall. Our school seems to always run onsome momentum or another, which make my job just plain fun, but with a newly remodeled building, it will beeven more exciting and fun to raise our expectations and reach new heights in keeping our kids engaged andmotivated as educate our children to be committed Jews. The future of our school and our program is as promising as ever!

At the end of February, the youth group organized anothersuccessful Purim Carnival! This event is the youth group’smain fundraiser for the year and due to the supportivecongregation, we are able to use the proceeds from thisevent to pay the programming expenses for the entireyear for the TamTams, SALTeens, and SALTY!

You might have noticed a few changes at the Carnival thisyear, such as The Sinai Sand Art and The Queen EstherCrown Decorating Booth. Also, we threw in a pie eatingcontest since they’re always fun! Special thanks toeveryone who generously donated to our ChanceAuction, the Brotherhood who donated and sold food

throughout the carnival, and to the SALTY Fundraising Vice President, Jenny Laliberte. Also, thank you to the youth group members who helped with setup, running the games at

the carnival, and clean-up! More thanks go out to the youth committee, who are always available to support us withall of our endeavors, the SALTY board, who serve as a tireless group of young leaders, and Gary and Lois Pess whounconditionally support the youth group, year after year. Most importantly, thanks go to our supportive congregationwhich recognizes the importance of supporting the youth group. THANK YOU!

Another change for the TBM community is the Youth Gift at the Bar/Bat Mitzvah presentations. We’ve finally retiredthe Judaism for Dummies! Our new gift will be our brand new SALTY hooded sweatshirt. This apparel will give all b’naimitzvah students a connection to SALTY. They will know that after this significant milestone, they have a place tocontinue their involvement at TBM and one of their many options is through youth group.

On March 21st, SALTY will be hosting NFTY-GER Regional Elections, in which roughly 160 Jewish teenagers will visit BethMiriam to elect the regional leaders for next year. Our NFTY-GER Rep, Erika Friend, will be our chair for this event and I

know she will do a wonderful job! Membership into the TamTams, SALTeens, and SALTY are always open! Ifyou are interested in receiving calendar updates, please email me [email protected] and you will be added to our mailing list. Shalom,Dee Ross

Tot Shabbat is our special once-a-month Shabbat service forour littlest members. The service is short - with the activity, aboutan hour - and is filled with music and a story and Shabbatruach (spirit). The kids sing, share Shabbat and then go into theSocial Hall for an Oneg especially made for them.Parents and grandparents are most welcome to sit on the bimawith the children and sing along with them.

My name is Jessica MollyWeltz. I am a seventh graderat Seashore Middle School. Iam a competitive figureskater with the Skating Clubof New York and I have beenskating since I was four yearsold. When I am not at the rink,I love to spend time withfriends and celebrateholidays with my family. I alsoenjoy music, bike riding, and going to the beach.I especially love rainy days, hot fudge sundaes, and a good joke!

My Kishrei Halev project was a clean upcampaign at Lake Takanassee. I am very proudof this project. Many friends and family membersjoined me over Thanksgiving weekend at thelake, and we had the best time collectinggarbage! Even Mayor Adam Schneider pitchedin. By the end of the clean up we had over 20huge lawn bags filled with garbage. I have beenback to the lake since then, and it still looksbeautiful. We really made a difference. Thanksto everyone who helped out!

ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!

So as we watch the Olympics, reveling in the successes of the medalwinners and commiserating with those who have trained so long anddo not get recognized with the accolades, how does that affect ourlives? Few of us will ever experience the “rush” associated withstanding before our peers and receiving the high praises an Olympiccompetitor feels after receiving the Gold Medal in their discipline, than hearing the National Anthem of their country played. We can however experience the pleasure and satisfaction ofhearing “Nice jobJohn”, “Way to go, Bill”, or the acknowledgement of a very simple“Thanks”.My son has really been taken by the successes of many of the athletes, but he has

asked also about those who have not won, even though they may be heavily favored. In his question thereis a great thought for him, and maybe for us?We consistently hear the athletes talk about “personal bests” or “team goals” even if they do not win. THATis the Olympic Spirit!! The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin words: “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, whichmeans “Faster, Higher, and Stronger”. These three words encourage the athlete to give his or her bestduring competition, and to view this effort as a victory in itself. The recognition on the podium goes to the one who had the best “score” that day. HOWEVER thesatisfaction of one who did his best and recognizes this EFFORT may not appear on the sports pages orinternet discussions, but will live in that athlete for the rest of his life.We have all heard the phrase – “the race goes to the swift” As well we have heard – “slow and steady winsthe race”. Both are truths. There are times when we must respond swiftly, as in a sprint. But there are alsotimes we must retain our cool heads and work our plan, as in a distance run or marathon. In life weexperience the same. There are times we need to make quick decisions, and times we need to maintain ourdiscipline and move slowly through the issue in front of us. In either case, the ability exists to say “Thank you”or “Way to go” to the people we are involved with,or support us. Those athletes that do not reach thePodium still rave about their Olympic Experience –why? They all say the camaraderie and goodfeelings shared by those who were there for thesame purpose they were. We should be able toshare with others in our lives because in so manyways we are on the same paths, experiencing thesame challenges, and working toward an end goal. This part of the conversation is directly related toour Brotherhood!I want to personally say THANK YOU and WAY TO GOto all of our members who so generouslycontributed to the goal of a New Torah Cover forthe High Holidays. Our collective TEAM EFFORTbrought the outcome as swiftly and successfully asany of us could have wished! The ability of all of usto bond together to a goal will make a lastingimpact on our Temple. It was a great showing of theability of the Brotherhood to come together arounda goal, and I look forward to more of this effort thisyear. We may not all successfully participate in a“team sport” but in life many of us will workdiligently toward a goal, perhaps professional, perhaps personal. In celebration of Women’s History Month,

TBM’s Sisterhood presents profiles of a few Jewish women:

Rita Levi –Montalcini won the 1986 'obel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Rita Levi-Montalcini is an Italian neurologist who, together with colleague Stanley Cohen, received the 1986

Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of Nerve growth factor (NGF). Levi-

Montalcini, the daughter of Sephardic Jewish parents, was born in Turin, Italy in 1909. In 1936 she

graduated from medical school with a summa cum laude degree in Medicine and Surgery. That same

year, Mussolini issued the "Manifesto per la Difesa della Razza", which led to laws barring academic

and professional careers to non-Aryan Italian citizens. In response, Levi-Montalcini built a small

research unit at home and performed experiments studying the growth of nerve fibers in chicken embryos. The invasion

of Italy by the German army in the fall of 1943, forced her family underground until the end of the war. Following the

war, she spent thirty years as a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, dividing her time

between St. Louis and Rome. In 1986 Levi-Montalcini and collaborator Stanley Cohen received the Nobel Prize in

Medicine. This made her the fourth Nobel Prize winner to come from Italy's small (less than 50,000 people) but very old

Jewish community. Since 2001, she has also served in the Italian Senate as a Senator for Life. Today she is the oldest

living Nobel laureate and the first ever to reach the 100th birthday.

Agnes Keleti (Klein) won 10 Olympic medals over three Olympiads. Hungarian Agnes

Keleti had her best Olympics at the age of 35, finding success after years of disappointment. She

qualified for both the 1940 Olympics when she was 19, but those Games were cancelled when the

Second World War broke out. Four years later, she was unable to participate in the 1944

Olympics because Nazi Germany had invaded Hungary. That year Keleti’s father and other

relatives were sent to Auschwitz where they perished. The gymnast’s sister and mother went into

hiding and escaped a similar fate with the aid of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who

provided documents permitting them to flee Hungary. Agnes purchased the papers of a Christian

girl and escaped to a small Hungarian village, where she worked as a maid. She started training

after the war, but suffered an ankle injury and missed the 1948 London Games. Keleti finally made her Olympic debut at

the 1952 Helsinki Games, now at the “ancient” gymnastics age of 31, she won a gold medal, a silver and a bronze. At the

1956 Melbourne Games, Keleti squared off against Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina and won three gold medals and two

silver. It was one of several dramatic confrontations between Soviet and Hungarian athletes in Melbourne; just before the

Games, Soviet troops quashed a democratic movement in Hungary. After the Games, Keleti was one of 45 Hungarian

athletes who asked for political asylum in Australia. She later moved to Israel and subsequently served as a coach for the

Israeli gymnastics team. Altogether, Keleti won 10 Olympic medals over three Olympiads, including 5 gold medals. She

is the most successful Jewish female athlete in Olympic history. Only one Jewish male athlete owns more Olympic

honors than Keleti‘s 10 medals––swimmer Mark Spitz, who captured 11 Olympic medals.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States Ruth

Bader Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn in 1933. The family belonged to the East Midwood Jewish

Center, where Ruth took her religious confirmation seriously. At age thirteen, she acted as the "camp

rabbi" at a Jewish summer program at Camp Che-Na-Wah in Minerva, New York. Ginsburg graduated

from Cornell University and then enrolled at Harvard Law School where she was one of only nine

women in a class of more than five hundred. After the birth of their daughter, her husband was

diagnosed with testicular cancer. During this period, Ginsburg attended class and took notes for both

of them; typed her husband's papers to his dictation; and cared for their daughter and her sick husband

— all while making the Harvard Law Review. When her husband took a job in New York City, she transferred to

Columbia Law School and became the first woman to be on both the Harvard Law Review and the Columbia Law Review.

In 1959, she earned her Bachelor of Laws degree at Columbia, tied for first in her class. In 1963 Ginsburg joined the

faculty of Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey. In 1972 she was hired by Columbia Law School, where she

taught until 1980. In the 1970s Ginsburg litigated sex discrimination cases for the American Civil Liberties Union, and

was instrumental in launching its Women’s Rights Project in 1973. President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg to the

United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1980. On June 14, 1993 Ginsburg accepted

President Bill Clinton’s nomination to the Supreme Court and took her seat on August 10, 1993. She is the second

woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court (Sandra Day O’Connor is the first).
