How to...French Knots1Bring the thread to the surface
at the position for the knot. Wrap the thread around the needletip twice and take the needle backthrough the fabric where it came up.
2Ease the knot on to the surface ofthe fabric, holding it steady whilst
pulling the needle through to thewrong side. Stitch to secure or returnto the surface for next French knot.

How to...resizeyour templatesThis pattern needs to beenlarged in order to use it. Todo this, change the 'copy ratio'of the machine to that given inthe text above the template –for example, if your patternpiece needs to be increased by40%, change the copier ratio to“140%” - that is, 100% (the sizeof the original) plus the 40%needed to bring it up to thenew, increased size.Alternatively, if you have ascanner connected to yourcomputer you can use this toresize your templates, utilisingthe software provided with themachine. This method can be used to enlarge or shrink any of the templates included within Sew magazine.
QuickTIPFabric can be torn alongthe grain for a super-straight edge – this is oftendone in fabric shops, wherethe cutter will snip a smalltear in the edge of the boltthen rip however much isneeded from the roll quicklyand neatly.

For best results when embroidering, usea hoop to hold the fabric taut whilst youwork the stitches. To prevent the fabricfrom slipping in the hoop, wrap theinner hoop with a narrow strip of plain, undyed fabric such as calico, securingthe end with a few stitches or a piece ofmasking tape.

Why use FUSIBLE WEBBING?This project uses fusible webbing on the reverseon the fabric. Not only does this act as anadhesive, adhering the appliqué motif pieces tothe backing, but it strengthens the shapes andprevents fraying.
