Telling Time

• To ask what time it is in Spanish, ask:

¿Qué hora es?

• To answer:

Es la una… (12:31 – 1:30)orSon las (hour). (1:31 – 12:30)

Telling Time

• It’s 8 o’clock.– Son las ocho.

• It’s 2 o’clock.– Son las dos.

• It’s 1 o’clock.– Es la una.

¿Qué hora es?

Of course – not all times are EXACTLY on the hour!

____:15 We say “Son las ____ y cuarto”

Ex: Son las dos y cuarto.(It’s 2:15)

____:30 We say “Son las ____ y media”

Ex: Son las tres y media.(It’s 3:30)

• 2:05– Son las dos y cinco.

• 2:15– Son las dos y cuarto.

• 2:30– Son las dos y media.

1:00 = Es la una.

• 1:10– Es la una y diez.

• 1:15– Es la una y

cuarto.

• 1:30– Es la una y media.

Times on the hour with 30 min. or LESS: use “y”

Times after 30 minutes can work a little

differently…

• Times on the hour with MORE than 30 min. (31-59) – – Use “menos”

• “menos” means LESS or MINUS, which is exactly what we have to do… we have to SUBTRACT.

– Son las tres menos veinticinco.

– It’s three minus 25 – or 2:35. (25 til 3:00)

• 5:40– Son las seis menos veinte.– It’s six minus 20 – or 5:40.

(20 til 6:00)

We go to the NEXT

hour and subtract the number of minutes.

• 3:55– Son las cuatro menos

cinco.– It’s 4:00 minus 5.– 5 til 4.

• 12:58– Es la una menos dos.– It’s 1:00 minus 2.– 2 til one.

We go to the NEXT hour and subtract the amount of minutes.

Notice!! The next hour is 1:00!!!

•Then you’ll know what hour to start on.

•If you’re on the “y” side … start on the hour you’re talking about. •If you’re on the “menos” side …start on the next hour (hour after) and subtract!

If it is 5:45, is it possible to say:Son las cinco y cuarenta y cinco?

•Many native speakers will use this format nowadays. You have the option!

Expressing “At ___ …”• To ask AT what time something is, ask:

• To answer:

Es a las _(hour)__. (1:31 – 12:30)

or

Es a la una. (12:31 – 1:30)
