We now have the data from this year’s survey. The report provides us with parent perceptions of nine key areas of our school: guidance and support, the school environment, teacher quality, curriculum, learning opportunities, personal development, parent communication, technology and resources, and leadership and management. The report allows us to conduct comparisons against a national benchmark and conduct year to year comparisons. We also conduct a student satisfaction survey with students in Years 3-6 and a staff climate survey with our teaching and non-teaching staff. All survey reports give us a summary including top strengths and top areas for improvement. So…. According to parents of Leanyer School students, we have strengths in the area of curriculum, in particular recognising that our curriculum is innovative and meets the needs of individual children. Another area of strength is recognising that our school is well managed and children’s learning needs are met by teachers. That is very good news!!!!!! What do parents want to see improved??? Technology and resources featured in the area for improvement, especially in providing easily accessible computers and monitoring computer use effectively. This is great feedback as it provides us with clear direction for 2016. IT is a priority area for Leanyer School and will be an even stronger focus in 2016. OK, what did the students say? Students felt a strength of Leanyer School was in student relationships and personal development with a vast majority happy to be at school and look forward to going to school. Great news again!!! What do the students want more of? A top area of improvement according to our students is to provide more opportunities to participate in additional activities such as sports, arts and music. Thank you to our specialist teachers who hold sporting, art and music club activities at lunch times. Leanyer students are definitely enthusiastic learners!!!! Thank you to the students and parents who participated in the survey. The reports become a key data source in our future strategic planning for Leanyer School. I have given you a very brief glimpse into this important data.

Community Events We have two more community events planned for the year. Our final school disco for the year will be held on Thursday 26 November with the usual split format. Our Early Years children can join in the dancing fun from 5-6pm and the Middle and Senior Years are invited from 6-7.30pm. We do NEED parent volunteers for this event! Many hands make light work. We need help with selling tickets at the door and the selling of food and drinks. We will need extra helpers and organisers if we are to have a BBQ fundraiser at the event. Please contact the front office if you are able to help out. Planning for Next Year A really difficult part of preparing for next year is knowing exactly what numbers make up our classes. This impacts on the teachers that we have, where they are placed and the makeup and size of classes. Thank you to the many parents who have indicated their intentions for 2016. If you are a parent of a Preschool – Year 5 child, please complete the form below and return it to school urgently (email is fine) if your child/ren will NOT be attending Leanyer School in 2016. Have a great week everyone. Tania Kolomitsev Acting Principal [email protected]

In Term Two Leanyer students were involved in a fundraising event to raise money for the Bright Children Foundation in Indonesia. The students took part in a word translation challenge and donated money for each correct answer they received. The total amount raised was $1104.90 and this money has now been received by the foundation. Thank you to everyone who participated.

What to say when kids become anxious By Michael Grose

7 practical things to say to kids to help them when they feel anxious. Anxiety has a way of making everyone feel helpless - those experiencing anxiousness and those trying to help. It’s hard to know what to say when a child becomes overwhelmed with anxiety, but it’s most important to be a strong, steadying influence. You may not be able to take their anxiousness away, but your emotional support and your calmness makes a difference.

Children take their cues from their parents so your trust that they can cope when they become overly anxious will send a powerful message that they’ll come out the other side safely. The language you use will convey your trust and also offer your child the comfort they need to feel safe, as well as the courage to find their own solutions to their anxiousness. When you see anxiousness take hold here are some things that you can say that will help your child cope: ‘You’re okay. I’m here and I won’t be going anywhere.’ Such statements indicate warmth, safety and comfort. Your child may not believe you straight away but that’s okay; your presence will get the message across. “You don’t have to do anything right now. Just breathe.” A big part of the stress of anxiety comes when children don’t know what to do. They don’t have to fight the feeling of anxiousness, but let it pass. The less children fight anxiousness, the more likely it is that the feeling will go. “Let’s go for a walk and see if we can take some big breaths.” Physical activity is the best antidote to an anxiety attack as it helps burn up the adrenalin that prepares a child’s body to fight or take flight. Try to help them take some strong breaths while they walk, which will be easier if they’ve practised when they aren’t anxious. Practise by breathing in to the count of three, holding for one, breathing out for three and holding for one. “Take some big, deep breaths. I’ll do it with you.” Anxiety comes from the fight or flight response when the brain perceives a threat. It doesn’t matter whether the

threat is real or not, the brain thinks and acts as if it’s true, leading to tenseness, hyperventilation and confused

thinking. Breathing triggers the relaxation response which, like the fight or flight response, is hardwired in all of us.

When children are calm explore different approaches to empower them to better manage their anxiousness. You might say: “I’d like to understand what your worry feels like for you. Can you teach me?”

The ability to accurately identify a feeling when it occurs is at the heart of emotional intelligence so encourage your child to verbalise what their anxiety feels like. Greater self-awareness increases your child’s ability to manage their feelings. “What would you say to a friend who was going through what you go through?” Invite your child to take a more objective look at their own anxiety to help them gain a different perspective and level of understanding. This approach also gives parents a greater insight into what a child is going through. “Your brain is amazing. Every time you breathe through your anxious feelings you’re teaching your brain how to manage your anxiousness.” Brains have an amazing capacity to adapt and learn new ways of coping. By helping your child understand that he is, in effect, training his brain to better respond to anxiousness you empower your child to positively manage their feelings. Help children manage their difficult emotions, including anxiety, by validating their feelings and encouraging them to experiment with different ways of coping. Encourage kids to come up with their own solutions when anxiousness threatens to overcome them. Kids are usually adept at solving their own problems when they have loving, supporting and positive adults in their lives.

The Green Tree Frog News After the Native Tree and Shrub Garden was constructed, concerned Green Tree Frog members noticed that the Orange Footed Scrub Fowls were invading the garden and removing soil and ground cover. In fact, one of the new plants was completely unearthed. Croak! Croak! So the Green Tree Frogs changed their happy singing and began calling for help. That help came in the form of a scarecrow building competition held at the school. The Green Tree Frogs are happy to announce that several scarecrows were constructed and are now deployed in the garden. First Prize in the Recycled Materials Category was Jemma’s Scarecrow Scrappy. Well done Jemma for a great job using so many recycled materials to build your scary scarecrow. First Prize in the Scariest Scarecrow Category was Amber and Amy’s scarecrow Scareabella. Well done Amber and Amy for a great job building such a scary faced scarecrow. We are sure his long nose will scare almost any annoying bird.
