Were going to take a closer look at the general information of The Sun, the first impressions andthen an inspection of the newspaper with the analysis ofthe content, an investigation per article and

a bit information about the readers. Wat bedoel je daarmee? Beter uitleggen. Dit is niet duidelijk.

Content not overview

The Sun is a daily national tabloid newspaper that is published in the United Kingdom.

- The paper was first published as a broadsheet (largest newspaper size) on 15 September1964. It was called a tabloid because of the size, but soon the word tabloid became a

synonym for scandals and sensation.

- The paper is owned by News Corporation, the American multinational mediaconglomerate of Ruper Murdoch. He had to deal with police and government

investigations. He was accused of bribary and corruption in the UK and the US. The

allegations against him included hacking into the phones of celebrities, royals and public

citizens.

the new publication, The Sun on Sunday, will commence publication on 29 April 2012; further

- During the elections, the Sun activily supported the politicians of parties of her choice. In1992 they supported John Major, later they gave their support to Tony Blair and David

Cameron. Those politicians are mainly conservatists (spelling!) = conservatives/members ofthe conservative party, which means the paper is politically right.

- When you first look at the newspaper you get the idea of it being very colourful, but whenyou actually have a look inside youll see that theres a random mix-up of pages printed in

colour or black and white.

- After just a quick look it becomes obvious that this isnt a very serious and intellectualnewspaper at all. A good example of this is a picture we found of our good friend Sam. Shes

one of the famous page three girls. I think most people would be ashamed when they get

caught looking at these sort of pictures.

- To me it has more the appearance of a gossip magazine such as De Dag Allemaal than anormal newspaper, thats why we expect(ed) it to be full of nonsense.I think it might be

true, just have a look at this. Oooh Justin, you naughty boy. Wat wil je uitdrukken? Ben je

er zeker van dat het vol onzin staat of ?

- To end this topic I would like to mention something about the size of this newspaper. TheSun is published in the so called tabloid size. This means that its very easy to carry around

and that you dont have to worry that much of spilling with your cup of coffee when trying to

turn the paper at the breakfast table.

On closer inspection

Now we are going to have a closer inspection.

(a) PhotographsWhen we go through the newspaper, we first (of all) notice the many photographs that the Sun

uses to illustrate almost every article. It is also clear that there is no balance between the length

of the text in the article and the size of the picture. For example (slide) this article about Football

has very little text (about 3 sentences) , but the picture covers half the page. (The article refers to

another page, in the middle of the newspaper..).

On the other hand we discovered that not all (the) photographs are coloured, the Sun varies

between coloured (photographs) and black-and-white photographs. The reason for this (, is

according to us,) easy to explain: non-coloured photographs cost less than coloured ones.

A last remark about the photographs is the feature known as Page Three. Tabloids like the Sun

are famous for this feature consistingof a large photograph of a topless female glamour model.

The tradition of printing a naked woman on the newspaper's third page started in 1970 in the

United Kingdom. The women are called the Page Three girls, and some of them use their Page

Three fame to launch prominent careers in the media, such as Samantha Fox and Katie Price.

(b) AdvertisingThe next topic is the advertising in the Sun. Starting with the front page, it is already obvious that

there are more advertisements in the Sun than in an intellectual newspaper. Sometimes the

advertisement covers the whole page, but mostly they cover half the page. (newspaper: show

page 12, 14 and 18) The variation between coloured and non-coloured pictures stays the same.

If we look at the products in the advertisements- like teabags, computer games, toys, food - we

notice that in general the Sun has advertisements about daily products(,things people from the

middle class could buy). To finish I want to mention this particular advertisement about tools

from Stanley and Bosch. This ad about typical gadgets for men was placed in the sports section,

so that men couldnt miss it.

(c) Lay-out

We continue with our inspection by looking at the lay-out of the newspaper. We consider the

Sun as a very confusing and chaotic newspaper, because there isnt a logical structure.

There is no a table of contents, except for the television- and sports section.

However, the Sun had some kind of structure. At page two you can always find the weathercast

and a little news about politics. On page 3, we see - the already mentioned - page three girl. Nextis the section about scandals of celebrities and news from the entertainment industry with

Bizarre, Tv Biz and the column from Frankie Boyle. The newspaper ends with 16 (!) pages of sport

news, mostly covered with news about soccer.

A last topic are the huge headlines (d. They are all very large. At the cover you can see a title

which covers most of the page. The other headlines in the newspaper dont have the same

typeface or colours.

Weve used a stacked bar chart, to show you how the content of The Sun is divided.

The horizontal axis shows the size of a certain fraction, the exact percentage can also be found in the

column.

- A stunning 30% of the newspaper is covered with advertising concerning cheap and everydayproducts such as food, games, lowbudget mobile phones etc.- A bit lower is the amount of articles about sports. 12 out of 60 pages, which is 20%, is

assigned to sports affairs.

- Only 5% of the articles discuss sensational topics such as murder and rape. But that issomething that can change from day to day.

- Its quite clear that you practically wont find any news about share markets or business andfinance developments in The Sun

- The sections national and international news account for only a very small percentage.- With its 26%, articles about human interest fill up almost a third of the newspaper- Last there is also a small section of background articles and comment that covers 5% of this

tabloid. = ???

For those people who are bored of reading articles, the sun provides an entertainment section. This

section in total covers up two pages. One page is packed with cross word puzzles, as you can see on

the left page, and on the right page youll find famous cartoons such as Wallace and Gromit and

Hagar the horrible and the horoscope for the superstitious people.

Lets have a look at the articles now.

Most of the articles are just on one or two pages. Only the ones that are on the front page, are

sometimes continued a bit further in the newspaper. An example is the article on Harry Redknapp on

the front page, that is continued on page four and five.

Another thing we can say about the articles, is that they are usually signed with exclusive by, and

then the full name of the author. Sometimes, also the e-mailadress of the writer is given. Theres

never an identification of the source or a press agency given, which could mean that they make up

some of their stories themselves.

- Between July and December 2010 the sun had an average daily readership of approximately7.6 million, with which it has the tenth-largest circulation of any newspaper in the world and

the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United Kingdom. Of all the people above

the age of 15 who read a newspaper from October 2010 till September 2011, 15.30% reads

The Sun.

- As we see in the following graphs, The Sun is most popular in certain groups of thepopulation:

- People younger than 45- People of social class C2, D and E (lower middle class, semi-skilled and working class)- Women (gossip)

To end our presentation, we could say that The Sun is a British tabloid with a lot of gossip in it. Its a

very showy, chaotic newspaper with many photographs and advertisements. Most of its readers areyounger people, women and people ofa lower social class. The sun is a politically right, conservative

paper.
