Thanks to its excellent geo-strategic lo-cation and its socioeconomic qualities,Turkey belongs to the emerging marketsof the world. Istanbul Chamber of Commerce(ICOC), has been taking upon the pio-neering role for commercial progress ofIstanbul and Turkey since 1882, isproud to develop and enhance cooper-ation of trade in the professional busi-ness world with its expert personnel,venturing spirit, and policy based on in-tegrity and equitability.

Representing the Turkish business com-munity with its approx. 350,000 mem-bers, ICOC ranks as one of the biggest5 chambers of the world in terms of sizeand activity. Esteeming commercial rela-tions as the most important aspect of in-ternational relations in general, it aimsat increasing international trade with re-

•Issuing registrations (800 on averageper day)•Issuing foreign trade documents (1,4million per year) •Hosting trade delegations and repre-sentatives (around 100 per year) •Serving the visitors ( 6.000 on averageper day)

With its member profile, ICOC is repre-senting almost 1/3 of all companies es-tablished in Turkey, contributing to 43%of all tax revenues, generating 28% ofthe GNP 28% of total industry, 31% oftotal services, more than 50% of totalforeign trade volume and more than50% of FDI's.

Among its broad range of activities,ICOC has been organizing and partici-pating to fairs all around the worldsince 1960’s. Like in many other parts of theworld, the industry for ma-chine manufacturing is the lo-comotive engine of our indus-trialization and it will sustainto be one of the leading sec-tors for our country’s develop-ment. Turkish machinery in-dustry has demonstrated 20percent of annual growthsince 1990.

Today, with its 9,5 billion dol-lars export volume to 200countries,. Turkish machineryindustry is one of the mostpowerful sectors ranking 29thin the world. Thus, the sectorwhich rapidly increases itsshare at the markets has chal-lenged many major foreignenterprises and turned intoone of the most important

rivals with its competitivepower.

Turkey’s 8 percent share ofthe total exports is aimed toreach 20 percent share andbecome 100 billion dollarsexports in 2023 with the in-creasing advantages for hightechnology producing sectorsto export. Furthermore, withinthis framework, a strategydocument called “Strategy forTurkish Machinery IndustrySector” has been formed andnecessary steps to realize thegoals of 2023 for the sectorhave been determined.

Machine manufacturers inTurkey are mostly SME’s andowing to their structure, theyare more flexible and rapid so

as to meet client’s expecta-tions and technological de-velopments. The cheap laborand developed engineeringcompetencies are the factorswhich increase the competi-tive power of our machinerymanufacturers at internation-al markets.

Our country’s powerful textileindustry has paved the wayfor further development ofthe manufacturing of textilemachinery equipment. Until1980s, almost all of the tex-tile machineries were import-ed. Yet, today, Turkish textilemachinery manufacturersproduce many machines.

TURKEY’S EXPORT FOR TEXTILE MACHINERY

When Turkey’s total export istaken into consideration,

there has been a crucial in-crease of exports regardingthe manufacturing of ma-chines. The share of machin-ery export among the totalexports was 5 percent in2000, while the share was 7percent in 2005 and 8 per-cent in 2010. The totalamount of exports reached9,5 billion dollars in 2010.When we examine the periodstarting from January to Aprilof 2011, there has been22,1 percent increase com-pared to 2010. In line withthis data, it is highly expectedthat there will be a consider-able increase at the end of2011.

Due to the shrinkage at do-mestic markets, many com-panies started to export andtextile machinery exports in-creased from 2004 to 2008.In 2009, our textile machin-ery and accessories exportsconstituted 3,2 percent of ourtotal machine exports andreached almost 263 million

dollars. In 2010, similar fig-ures have appeared and ex-ports reached almost 263, 5million dollars. According tothe data of 2010, the maincountries for exports are Iran,India, Uzbekistan, UK andGermany. Furthermore, whenwe examine the period start-ing from January to April of2011, the export for Textileand Confection Machineryhas increased 15,4 percentand reached 106 milliondollars compared to thesame period of 2010.

When we analyze our coun-try’s export for textile ma-chinery and accessories ingeneral, there has been acontinuous development. In2000, the number of coun-tries for the exports of textilemachinery and accessorieswas 76. While it was 91countries in 2005, the num-ber jumped to 111 countriesin 2010.

While there have been smallamounts of exports to severalcountries in 2000s, thequantity increased consider-ably. For instance, in 2001,the exports to Iran for textilemachinery was around onemillion dollars while it was8,6 million dollars in 2006and 27,6 million dollars in2010. This means that, in adecade, Turkey has becomethe top country in terms ofexports of textile machineryand accessories, and in-creased twenty seven fold.Similarly, owing to the invest-ments and facilities construct-ed by Turkish textile compa-nies in Uzbekistan, the ex-ports to the country increasedconsiderably. The amount ofexports was 0,7 million dol-lars in 2001, 13 million dol-lars in 2006 and 16,5 mil-lion dollars in 2010.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ITMA TRADE SHOW CATALOGUE

Dear Participants,

Without a doubt, one of the most important factors toensure the global development and progress of tradesectors is the existence of trade shows that providedirection for each individual sector. It is in this way thatwhile the sector offers increased opportunities for growthfor the trade fair, the trade fair does the same for thesector, opening up new horizons.

The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, aware of the im-portance of trade fairs in the development of Turkey’strade and economy, has given special importance tosupporting the most important trade fairs in the worldfor the past 129 years. In this framework, we are greatlyhonored that Turkish companies have been included inITMA 2011; this trade show, which has been organizedthis year in Spain, includes leading major companies inthe textile machinery sector.

The ITMA trade show, which has 60 years of experience,is one of the leading trade fairs in the textile sector. Thistrade show goes beyond bringing the textile machinesector together, and also provides important developmentsin the world textile sector, introducing new productionstyles and advanced technology.

We believe that Turkey, which in the past few years hashad great success in a number of areas, like textiles andindustrial areas, will put its stamp on the ITMA tradeshow this year; Turkey, a rapidly developing country, isnow the 16th largest economy in the world and the 6thlargest in Europe. Turkey has put forward incredibly sig-nificant goals for 2023, the 100th anniversary of the es-tablishment of the Turkish Republic. One of these goalsis to increase Turkish exports to 500 million dollars, be-coming one of the first 10 economies in the world.

When we look at the textile sector we can see that wehave now achieved this goal; at the present time Turkeyis among the top five in the world in textile and ready-to-wear export, exporting more than 20 million dollars.

On the other hand, Turkey is just as confident that it willachieve the same ratio in machine production andexport. In the Machine Sector Action Plan for 2023 it isaimed that exports will make up 20 percent of the total100 million dollars in exports for this country. Turkey isthe second largest investor in this area. Turkey now canproduce many textile machines, including advancedelectronic control systems in modern factories, on high-tech workbenches, using expert personnel.

Finally, at this trade show we in Turkey will not only beable to share the innovations that we have made, but wewill also be able to follow technology abroad moreclosely. We will come together with producers of textilemachines from every region in the world.

I hope that both Turkey and all other participants will beable to achieve their joint aims from the ITMA TradeShow. Thus, while congratulating our Spanish colleagueson their success with this multi-dimensional trade showorganization, I also hope that the participating companieswill have a successful trade show.
