A new, 430 horsepower 3408E turbocharged and aftercooledelectronic engine with HEUI (Hydraulically actuated,Electronically controlled Unit Injected) fuel system replaces thecurrent 400 horsepower 3408C turbocharged and aftercooledengine with camshaft driven mechanical scroll fuel system. The3408E HEUI engine features ADEM (Advanced Diesel EngineManagement) ECM (Electronic Control Module). Other 3408Eimprovements include new engine parts for increased reliabilityand durability. This new engine provides many uniqueadvantages over traditional diesel engines. Operating conditionsare electronically monitored to provide precise engine controland optimized engine performance. Precise engine control isachieved by the fuel system’s independent, flexible control offuel injection timing, pressure and duration at every speed andload point. The improved engine performance contributes tobetter fuel economy, faster response, and lower emissionsfor a cleaner, quieter environment and lower cost per ton.

Improvements

The basic principle behind HEUI is that fuel injection iselectronically controlled and physically carried out by high-pressure oil.

HEUI system has two fluid circuits: fuel and oil. Fuel is suppliedfrom the fuel tank through internal passages in the cylinder headto the injectors via a transfer pump. This design eliminates allexternal high-pressure fuel lines. A fuel regulating valve controlsfuel system pressure.

Engine oil is drawn from the engine sump through an oil coolerand filter to both the engine and the gear-driven oil supply pump. The oil supply pump increases system pressure to the actuationlevel of 700 to 3,300 psi. The high-pressure oil travels throughlines into an oil manifold near the injectors. The manifold storesthe oil at actuation pressure ready for the injector operation. Therail pressure control valve electronically controls the outputpressure of the high-pressure oil pump and thereby controls thefuel injection pressure.

The ECM receives input from various engine sensors to determinethe optimum fuel quantity, timing and injection pressure. TheECM then communicates with the with the rail pressure controlvalve to control injection pressure and with the electronic unitinjectors to control fuel quantity and injection timing.

The 3408E engine meets and exceeds the 1996 emissionsregulations and are capable of meeting 2001 regulations. It ismore responsive and produces less smoke and fewer particulatethan the current 3408C engine. Cold start-up mode allows theengine to warm-up faster with less white smoke. Engineoperating noise is reduced by fuel injection rate shaping, fewermoving parts than mechanically actuated fuel systems and bya high capacity, low speed engine oil pump.

Fuel system reliability is improved by the simplicity of designand the requirement for fewer adjustments. Overall reliabilityfor the fuel system is 50% better than the current product.Durability, which measures the engine operating time priorto a major overhaul, has been increased 20% from the current3408C engine.

Performance improvement results from increased flywheelhorsepower and improved torque. The 3408E delivers 430flywheel horsepower and a 34% torque rise. Fuel economy isequal to or better than current engines. BSFC is improved up to5% depending on application. Optimum engine performance isachieved with independent, flexible control of fuel injectiontiming, pressure and duration over the entire engine speed range.

Serviceability is improved with ADEM ECM (ElectronicControl Module). This control system provides features tomonitor critical engine operating conditions, to precisely controlfuel injection pressure, timing and duration, to integrate otherelectronic controls on machine applications and to quicklytroubleshoot faults. Engine speed governing is fully electronicand adjustment free. Engine protection is provided through visualwarning for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, loss ofcoolant flow and engine overspeed. Troubleshooting is facilitatedby active electronic fault indication and electronic fault loghistory. Engine control data link provides integrated transmissioncontrol and a customer interface for data communications.

This new HEUI fuel system is the only diesel fuel injectionsystem in the world which is virtually adjustment free. It doesnot require rack adjustments or timing height settings commonto mechanically actuate unit injectors. Injector installationrequires only removal and installation of the injector and oiljumper tube, and reconnection of the solenoid wire.

Axle shaft brakes, similar to those on the 990 wheel loader, willreplace the current oil disc brakes found on the 988F. The newaxle shaft brakes are fully hydraulic, sealed from contaminantsand never need adjustment. Cooling oil contained in the axlehousing is carried by grooves in the face of the disc. This providescooling even when the brake is applied.

The previous design was configured with the brake on the hightorque side of the final drive. The new brakes are located on theaxle shaft before the final drive, giving the name Axle ShaftBrakes. Since the brake is on the low torque side of the finaldrive, the brake itself does not need to generate as much torqueas a conventional brake. With lower torque requirements, thebraking area required is reduced. Thus the new brake is notas large as the previous brake design but has equal or higherbraking capacity.

Even though the brake is smaller, its braking capacity is higherthan conventional brakes. A brake’s capacity is determined byits ability to dissipate heat. The location of the Axle Shaft Brakeprovides a physically larger reservoir of cooling oil. In addition, the separator plates between the friction discs are thicker thanon conventional brake designs adding more heat sink foreffective heat dissipation. With its excellent ability to dissipateheat, this brake, even though carrying less area, is able to providelong, reliable fade-resistant braking.

On conventional brake designs, it is necessary to break the finaldrive to service the brake. With the axle shaft brake, the finaldrive and hub are removed intact. This exposes the brake discs, allowing easy replacement. When the new discs are in, simplyreplace the hub and final drive assembly.

The 988F Series II improves the operator’s station by reducingthe sound level, increasing the viewing area and improving theinterior environment. Operator station noise level is reduce to 79dB(A) from 85 dB(A), reducing operator fatigue. Viewing areais increased by adding more glass area to the lower part of thecab. The interior cab environment is modernized witha gray interior color scheme. Other operator orientedenhancements include:

• Ether Aid Automatic actuation controlled by operator’schoice of ADEM or Manual Actuation.

• Throttle Lock Presets the engine speed to enhance operatorcontrol of the machine for high production. The rocker switch located right below theCMS panel turns the system on and off. Thetwo buttons right in front of the right arm restsets and resumes the engine speed. The firstbutton is to set and reduce the rpm. The throttlelock can be shut off by pressing the brakepedal. Previous engine speed may be resumedby the resume button and this button alsoadjusts speed upward in 50 rpm increments.

• Axle Temp Sensor Detects and advises the operator of excessive

axle oil temperature.• CMS Software changes to improve diagnostic

capability.

Steering System Steering hydraulic system redesigned toimprove efficiency and reduce powerrequirement, improving fuel efficiency.

Changed PMS (Payload Measuring System) to PCS II.(Payload Control System). This system gives the operator theability to measure payload on-the-go with an accuracy of +-2%.PCS II compared to PMS has improved reliability, durability, and functionality including download capability. (Available2nd Qtr 1996)

Controlled by ADEM, the ride control system can be engagedat certain speeds automatically or manually similar to the990 system. The ride control option reduces pitching andloping when machine is traveling at higher speeds. Thisreduces spillage and allows the operator to cycle faster forhigher production giving the operator better control of themachine at higher speeds. By minimizing ground inducedshocks, maintenance cost associated with drivetrain and tirescan be reduced.
