Vision Statement
The Tekakwitha Conference is the Voice, Presence and Identity of Indigenous Catholics of North America under the protection and
inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
Our Mission Statement
We, as members of the Tekakwitha Conference inspired by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a young, Mohawk/Algonquin woman of the 17th century, renew our faith and reaffirm our baptismal call as followers of Jesus to
proclaim the Good News. We pray with faith and hope for the continued intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in the lives of all Peoples.

Dear Tekakwitha Conference family,
During our 2018 Lenten journey, perhaps we can reflect more deeply on our meaningful and powerful symbols of faith
and inner attitudes when receiving ashes on our forehead, blessing ourselves with holy water or smudging with sweetgrass,
sage or cedar.
Lent is a time to be reconciled with our merciful God, ourselves and others. The Church provides us with three opportunities to
change through Prayer, Almsgiving and Fasting.
Prayer is our way to love God, to connect with His love for us, and acknowledge our love for God by praise and thanksgiving.
Almsgiving is a way to love others by giving material things such as money. What about giving of ourselves, our time and attention
to others such as our elders, our young people, the sick and lonely? Have you thought about giving compliments and affirming others?
Fasting reminds us to take time to love ourselves in a positive way by paying attention to our bodies.
It can also mean that we simplify our lives, to forego some distractions, to make room in our being so that God can be God for us.
Together, may we pray that we allow time to be reconciled to God, ourselves and others during these weeks of prayer, almsgiving and
fasting. Then, we will truly experience the Joy of Easter on the Day of Jesus’ Resurrection.

Prayer for the Canonization of Nicholas Black Elk Grandfather! Great Spirit! Behold us, who stand before you, singing our song of thanksgiving for your beloved servant, Nicholas Black Elk. Faithfully he walked the Sacred Red Road and generously witnessed the Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ among Native people. Grandfather, we humbly ask you, to hear the prayers we plead through his intercession. We
ask Holy Mother Church to recognize his sanctity, by acknowledging his presence among the company of saints and as one to imitate in his zeal for the Gospel. Open our hearts to also recognize the Risen Christ in other cultures and peoples, to the glory and honor of God the Father. Mitakuye Oyasin (All my relatives)
Prayer for the Beatification of the Servants of God Antonio Cuipa and Companions
O God, Father of all nations, you have summoned us to announce the freedom of your children. We
thank you for calling your Servants Antonio Cuipa and his companions to proclaim the Catholic faith
during the birth of a new nation.
May their example of suffering and forgiveness give us the courage to bear witness to Christ in our own
time. We also pray that they be counted one day among your saints.
Through the intercession of your Servants, grant us the following grace which we ask from your loving

Our Kateri Circles in action
“Thank you to so many who joined us at St. Lawrence Martyr Parish, Redondo Beach, CA, on April 7, 2017, Friday morning Children’s Mass, Blessings, Dedication and placing of our St. Kateri Tekakwitha circle street sign. It was a beautifully spiritual and exciting celebration. The children were so gracious, interested and attentive, along with their teachers and the parish staff. A special thank you to April and Chris Barley for their generous bid for, and donation of the sign to the St. Lawrence Martyr St. Kateri Circle.
Rev. Msgr. Paul T. Dotson, Pastor Rev. P and Deacon Jim Egnatuk have been wonderfully supportive.
January 20, 2018 Journey with the Bear, St. Kateri Circle from Bear, Delaware, presented a Native Celebration. Guest speaker, Natosha Norwood Carmine, Chief of the Nanticoke Indians Tribe of Delaware gave a heart felt talk on healing and opening up to
new adventures with her tribe. Dancers from the Nanticoke, Lenape, and Aztec tribes and drummers performed. Singers from Spirit Wing also entertained the crowd of over 200 people in attendance. This celebration was put together to show how all peoples
in different cultures want the same thing, and to bring attention to the spiritual elements within the Native culture. Sharon Ward, Representative for the Native
American Indian Ministry along with Father Evers, Director of the ministry, Diocese of
Wilmington were overwhelmed by the response given for the
celebration.

‘St. Kateri Tekakwitha Prayer Circle’ formed in Archdiocese The new “Texas Indian Paintbrush St. Kateri Prayer Circle”: gives Native Americans, or
those who identify with the culture and traditions, the opportunity to gather and pray in
Houston.
Besides reinforcing their Catholic identity, members also affirm their pride in Native
cultures and spiritual traditions, promote healing through forgiveness and reconciliation,
and are advocates for peace and justice in Indigenous communities. The goal is to also
build stronger catechesis that is meaningful to Catholic Indigenous people and nurture the
relationship between Indigenous people and the Catholic Church, as well as, empower
leaders within their communities and Church.

For sixteen months, the Executive Director Search Team has worked diligently to find the candidate most suited for the position of leadership for our Conference. We appreciate the prayers and support you have given us during this time. The following statistics give a breakdown of the applications.

Number of applicants who visited the National Conference Center 2 Since you are familiar with the criteria for the Executive Director position (please see prior issues of the “Cross and Feathers”), you will realize how challenging it has been to find an appropriate candidate. Only four of the applicants were current Conference members. Besides our own newsletter, the Search Team advertised in several other publications.
The successful applicant is Mr. Robert Barbry II an enrolled member of the Tunica Biloxi Tribe of Marksville, Louisiana. You will meet Robert Barbry II in our next issue of the Cross and Feathers May-June-July.

Vendor Sales Policy
All vendors and their helpers are to register and pay full Conference Registration fees. Registration form is on pages 12 & 13. The Tekakwitha National Board of Directors allows individuals and groups who are full conference paid participants to sell during the Annual Conference to give you and/or your group an opportunity to finance your trip to the Annual Tekakwitha Conference.
EACH VENDOR AND HELPER MUST PAY FULL REGISTRATION & CONFERENCE FEES You must pay your FULL Conference Registration before we can accept a vendor form request. A vendor permit will be issued only to those who are registered for the full 79th Annual Tekakwitha Conference and have paid a table fee of $100.00 per table. Vendors will be allowed to conduct sales these days: Wednesday July 18, Thursday July 19, Friday July 20, and Saturday July 21 only in the designated vendor area. Sales are permitted only in the designated area located at the Tacoma Convention Center. NO SALES ALLOWED DURING LITURGIES (MASS and PRAYER times). Please be respectful. Security of your sales table will be your responsibility and not the responsibility of the Tekakwitha Conference nor the responsibility of the Tacoma Convention Center. The Tekakwitha Conference and the Tacoma Convention Center are not liable for any loss, damage, or theft. ONLY tables and chairs provided by the Tacoma Convention Center are allowed for vendors. A PAID VENDOR PERMIT with your name is required for each table used. Sale items are limited to SAINT KATERI TEKAKWITHA RELIGIOUS ARTICLES AND NATIVE ARTS & CRAFTS. PLEASE go to the vendor registration table to pick up your vendor permit on registration day upon your arrival.
