Vision Statement

The Tekakwitha Conference is the Voice, Presence and Identity of Indigenous Catholics of North America under the protection and inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.

Our Mission Statement

We, as members of the Tekakwitha Conference inspired by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a young, Mohawk/Algonquin woman of the 17th century, renew our faith and reaffirm our baptismal call as followers of Jesus to proclaim the Good News. We pray with faith and hope for the

continued intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in the lives of all Peoples.

Dear Friends of Saint Kateri,

“How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me?” Ps.116:12

We continue our journey remembering Easter and the sacred fire, Christ our Light reminding

us that this light is to shine through us for our brothers and sisters. Will I take the opportunity to deepen my friendship with God, family and friends during these coming summer months with many Church celebrations and family gatherings?

Church and family life will be busy with many liturgical feast days, First Communions,

Confirmations and Marriages. The end of the academic year means school graduations from kindergarten, middle school, high school, colleges and universities. Best of all, students will enjoy summer vacation perhaps a summer job, some leisure/vacation, and play.

Family gatherings such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, anniversaries and birthdays, and our

annual Saint Kateri Tekakwitha’s family reunion this July in Tacoma and the Lummi Reservation are blessed moments. Yes, the joy of a spirit-filled people continues in our daily lives as we affirm our faith and trust in relationships with our Creator God, the Risen Lord and with one another.

May the Light of Christ shine through you as one transformed into the Body of Christ to be

the Good News to the world! May you have a safe summer, many joys and much laughter!

Saint Kateri Prayer

By: Harold Caldwell

O Saint Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks,

Your love for Jesus, so strong, so steadfast,

pray that we may become like you.

Your short and painful life

showed us your strength and humility.

Pray that we may become

Forever humble like you.

Like the bright and shining stars at night,

we pray that your light

may forever shine down upon us,

giving light, hope, peacefulness

and serenity in our darkest moments.

Fill our hearts, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

with your same love for Jesus

and pray that we may have the strength and courage

to become one like you in Heaven.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

for calling your Servants Antonio Cuipa and his

May their example of suffering and forgiveness give us the courage to

bear witness to Christ in our own time. We also pray that they be

Through the intercession of your Servants, grant us the following

grace which we ask from your loving kindness:

(here make your request) We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Our Kateri Circles in Action

Dear Tekakwitha Conference Members,

Our new director-in-training, Robert, is happily married to his wife, Rachel, and is a father to three wonderful

children (two daughters, one son). He is a convert to the Catholic faith and brings to the Tekakwitha Conference 7+

years of experience in both Catholic and Evangelical ministry settings. He completed his undergraduate studies in

marketing through McNeese State University and just recently earned a Master of Arts degree in Catechetics &

Evangelization through Franciscan University of Steubenville. Robert also brings his proud native heritage as a

member of the federally-recognized Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana. Being in ministry, as a lay person, has always been his passion,

and Robert is honored to have the opportunity to be in service to the Church and to his native brothers and sisters.

News you have all been waiting for!

February 2018

At Immaculate Heart Middle School's Ash Wednesday prayer service, three special guests gave the students a new

perspective through which to view their Lenten journey.

Mary Meier, Charlene Patton, and Chuck Jensen, from the St. Lawrence Martyr Kateri Circle shared the beautiful

way their cultural heritage, growing up on the Blackfeet Reservation, melds with their Catholic faith by incorporating

the traditional Native American medicine wheel into the prayer service. Luella Wagner, a substitute teacher at

Immaculate Heart and a member of the City of Angels Kateri Circle, and her class, led the students on a journey

through the four directions of the wheel, discussing how each represents a different aspect of life that can help

guide us on our path during Lent and beyond.

Like the eagle, the spiritual animal associated with the east, we must rise above our limitations and find the strength

and determination to become better versions of ourselves. And the buffalo, the spiritual animal associated with the

north, reminds us to fully and deeply appreciate the sacrifices others make for us, even as we consider what

sacrifices we might need to make for others.

The south's connection to water also strikes a special chord for Immaculate Heart middle schoolers, who attended

an assembly today officially announcing the first stages of their Lenten Water Project. During Lent, students will

drink only tap water, and to collect the money they save by doing so. This money will then be used to help fund

the construction of wells in areas that don't currently have access to safe, clean drinking water.

“We are brothers and sisters in Christ” March 10, 2018 The retreat, “Being a missionary where you are,” was presented by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City’s American Indian Catholic Outreach and St. Kateri Tekakwitha Spiritual Center of Oklahoma. Tekakwitha Conference Board Appointments and Elections

Special Attention to Members: 2018 is an Election Year for Board of Directors

Nominations are open for REGIONS 1 and 4. Please note: Effective Board of Directors Leadership

As you have read in the January-February and March-April issues of the “Cross and Feathers,” there are Regions that are not currently represented. Although the current Board Members are well able to continue with the governance of the Conference, it is important that each Region has representation. Because of this critical situation, the Board, in accordance with the Bylaws of the Tekakwitha Conference is appointing regional Board Members for Region 2, 3, and 5 for a 2-year term. The Bylaws also provide for extending a current Board Member’s term for a second term in order to keep the continuity of governance. Therefore, Cathy Vasquez, Region 6, is remaining on the Board for three more years. Regions 1 and 4 Board positions are open for nomination. Members of those Regions, please see the following guidelines for this process. You will see that the deadline for nominations is June 15, 2018. We will be introducing the appointees at the Conference in Tacoma during the Annual Board of Directors Address to the General Assembly. Thank you to all for your prayers and support of your Board of Directors. You place a lot of trust in us to continue governing our Tekakwitha Conference, and we take this responsibility very seriously.
