It’s been a while since the Teen Center put out a newsletter, but thanks to the hard work and dedication of the teens in our Leadership Program, monthly editions of our newsletter will be made available to the community. That’s twelve newsletters a year filled with stories, program information and all the things you need to know about your local Boys & Girls Club. Our newsletter will also introduce everyone to some of our Outstanding Members, Key Staff, and Ways You Can Help support your local club. So, remember, the purpose of the newsletter has all ways been to keep the shareholders in our community informed on all Boys & Girls Club activities and business. We welcome teenagers 13-19 years old who reside in Community Board 10 or 12 or attend one of our Local Schools to become a member. You can also call us if you have questions. We now have 11 Teen Centers in the North Bronx and you can learn more about them online at www.mmcc.org. We had an enjoyable but cold season and look forward to a productive spring season. Program Highlight By Jameell Adjei This Month’s Program Highlight will take a look at The Young Mens’ Group and Girl’s Night programs. Both programs are supervised by Shonte Armstrong. Ms. Armstrong has supervised both programs since 2008. The Young Men’s’ Group and Girl’s Night programs are both essential to the development of healthy teenagers. The programs are set up and designed to support teens as they mature into young adults. It also gives teens a chance to discuss things they can’t with their parents. In this non- judgmental environment, teens are encouraged to listen and learn from each other, have their opinions and voices heard, and become part of a supportive network of peers. These programs cover important teen issues, welcome special guest speakers and other surprises that groom teens into becoming confident decision makers and better students. Ms. Shonte does these programs because she feels the teenage population does not get enough attention. She also feels that sometimes adults don’t really value or respect teenagers’ feelings. Boys’ & Girls’ Night has helped her reflect back on her own teen years. It has also helped her develop a greater sense of patience. “Every time I do Boys’ & Girls’ Night the things I learn surprise me, but what shocks me the most is how much the teens want to learn, and how much they grow up after completing the program”. Program Highlight By Jameell Adjei

This Month’s Program Highlight will take a look at The Young Mens’ Group and Girl’s Night programs.

In this non-judgmental environment, teens are encouraged to listen and learn from each other, have their opinions and voices heard, and become part of a supportive network of peers.

These programs cover important teen issues, welcome special guest speakers and other surprises that groom teens into becoming confident decision makers and better students. Ms. Shonte does these programs because she feels the teenage population does not get enough attention. She also feels that sometimes adults don’t really value or

respect teenagers’ feelings. Alumni of the Month

MAYA DOYLE , PROGRAM ASSISTANT

I started as a member of the Section Five Teen Center when it opened in 2007. During my high school years, I attended many of the programs. I received Female Member of the Year award in 2009 and became the President of our Teen Council. I graduated from DeWitt Clinton in 2010 and attended Mercy College. I received a job opportunity as the receptionist and outreach coordinator for the Section Five Teen Center. Since then, I have taught ELA for 7th to 9th graders and worked along- side the director for the Teen Council. In May 2014, I graduated from Mercy College with my Bachelor of Science Degree and I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree at Lehman College. I also had the opportunity to become the Program Assistant of the Section Five Teen Center. My biggest accomplishment is being able to help the children in the building. It is an amazing feeling to walk in and hear them say they miss me.
