Introduction

In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TEDx at VCU is preparing to host our second TEDxVCU conference, Juxtapose. To be hosted October 24th, 2015, TEDxVCU is once again returning to the historic Altria Theater. Last year’s flagship event boasted 13 talks, six food trucks, and upwards of 600 attendees, making it a true success.

This year we are excited to have this opportunity to showcase the eclectic, and sometimes clashing, culture that makes up our wonderful urban university. Thank you, for your support, and we invite you to come and enjoy TEDxVCU 2015.

Best,

TEDxVCU Organizing Team

About TED

About TEDx

About TEDxVCU

TED is an annual event where the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share their passions. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - three broad subject areas that are shaping our future.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a pro-gram of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.

TEDxVCU is student-led and produced event for the Virginia Commonwealth University community. In 2014, the single day conference explored how students, faculty and community leaders are pushing boundaries, seeking solutions to problems, and constantly strive to improve upon the human condition through the theme of Simplicity. This year, TEDxVCU presents Juxtapose, where speakers will expose common beliefs in order to lead discussions to think beyond what we know and understand.

Our community stands on the crux between the book-smart and street-smart, the medical prodigies and the boundary-pushing creatives. Richmond, once the capital of the Confederacy, is the now most liberal city in the state. A melting pot of ideas and stories. Our tattoos are plenty, our bikes are everywhere, and there’s always a festival going on. We may seem scary but that 300-pound bearded gentleman is an amateur opera singer and gives the warmest hugs ever. We never take no for an answer.

Virginia Commonwealth University is at the center of this maelstrom of a mixup. We embody the future and study the past. We cause noise complaints and shush others during finals. TEDxVCU is meant to epitomize the spirit of VCU, the contrasts and shades of personalities of the varied people that inhabit our university. We aim to inspire through sharing innovative ideas with the entire community.

TEDxVCU serves as a platform for going beyond boundaries. We go to class within walls, bolstered by our own borders between each other. The loneliness of focus begs for interruption, for fresh and new ideas, new horizons of creativity. TEDxVCU seeks to cause a collision of the old and new, bad and good, big and small, in order to reflect upon our communal identity and instill new connection from within and without.

To juxtapose is to compare and contrast, to stare long and hard and to glance at in passing. For TEDxVCU this year we want to illustrate the differences and similarities in our community and how we can heal the rifts that break us apart and celebrate the ideas that bring us together. Join us on October 24th, 2015 at the Altria Theater.

Highlight SpeakersGeorge Ferrandi is an American artist whose work responds to the specifics of a site, audience or situation, engaging whatever medium is best suited for the task. Employing a unique humor and a deep sense of humanity, her work stimulates a rethinking of cultural assumptions. George teaches Sculpture and Performance Art periodically at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Virginia Commonwealth University. George lives with a small dog and a rooftop garden in Brooklyn.

As a professor in the School of Engineering, an associate member at Massey Cancer Center, and a member of the Center for Rehabilitation Science at Virginia Commonwealth University, he leads a research team that is developing a novel nanofluidic sensor system for cancer diagnostics and human-machine interfaces via skin-like electronic systems. After his father’s passing, Dr. Hong Yeo pursued a new life: transforming himself into an engineer who contributes to the advancement of human health by developing life changing technologies.

MoB+Storefront operates on the belief that good design makes a healthier city where citizens participate more fully in their environment, their government and their culture. MoB is a partnership of three design departments of VCUarts, Graphic Design, Fashion Design and Interior Design. These departments operate an experimental design lab that realizes the potential of design to shape the City. The Storefront for Community Design is Richmond’s non-profit design assistance center, improving the quality of design in the city by facilitating access to design and planning resources.
