Client Summary

About TEDxPSU TEDxPSU was brought to the Penn State community in 2010. The mission of the event is to bring together innovative and thought-provoking individuals from the Penn State community and the world to share ideas worth spreading. Using a blend of live talks and pre-recorded videos, TEDxPSU unites the University community and initiates a dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing our society. Follow TEDxPSU on Twitter (@TEDxPSU) or on Facebook (TEDxPSU). About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) About TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Target Audience

TEDxPSU targeted members of both the Penn State and State College communities who are interested in learning more about innovative, creative and informational topic matters. TED events are known for bringing in the nation’s leading thinkers and doers, so our target audience reflected this on a smaller, more local scale. As TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions was held at Penn State's University Park campus and streamed online, the main audience targeted was Penn State students and faculty, local State College residents, and TED and TEDx enthusiasts who would travel to University Park for the event or would watch the event's live stream.

Research/SWOT Analysis

Strengths:

• TEDxPSU 2010 was a very successful event. • TEDxPSU has support from the University, specifically the Penn State

College of Information Sciences and Technology. • The Executive Team for TEDxPSU 2010 made valuable connections and

partnerships that the 2011 Executive Team can leverage. Weaknesses:

• Other than the curator, who served as a student liaison for TEDxPSU 2010, all members of the Executive Team are new to their positions on the Team.

Opportunities:

• With the buzz surrounding smart phones and tablets, technology is an increasing topic in the media.

• Through the student Xpo Showcase, TEDxPSU has the ability to draw in students from the clubs that participate.

Threats:

• TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions will be held during a football weekend. • TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions will be held at the same date and times

as the THON Family Carnival.

Evaluation of Goals and Objectives

As of the evening of November 13, 2011, the day of TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions, the TEDxPSU Facebook Fan Page reached 1,844 monthly active users. We achieved this by posting interesting stories from the Penn State community, tagging TEDxPSU in all related posts, promoting the page in all newsletters and linking the Facebook page to all events posted on the Eventbrite site. As of that evening, we also had 745 Twitter followers. This was achieved by promoting our Twitter page as the source for breaking TEDxPSU news and by posting content to the page as soon as it was published; i.e. Eventbrite event registration, blog posts and speaker announcements. We were also able to increase our Twitter followers by engaging in conversations with our current followers and responding to all tweets that mentioned TEDxPSU. We were successful with our objective to have one story published in each of the major Penn State news publications for each of the TEDxPSU fall events and major milestones. As outlined in the Media Clippings Log, we saw the following:

• Two stories for the opening of registration and event announcement

• One story for the unveiling of the TEDxPSU theme • One story for the first Salon event, TEDxPSU Salon: Innovate

and Educate • One story for the first Adventure, TEDxPSU Old Main Bell Tower

Tour • One story for the second Salon event, TEDxPSU Salon:

Synthesizing Sustainability • Six stories for the speaker announcements • Two stories for TEDxPSU Watch Parties • One story for the second Adventure, TEDxPSU Galactic

Cannibalism • Three stories recapping the TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions

We also saw success in the amount of people registered for TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions, 1,082 by November 1, 2011, and in the amount of people who attended the event on November 13, 2011, 768 people.

“TEDxPSU Registration Opens Up Today”

Onward State Today is an important day; it’s the first day of classes, where the new ideas begin to flow through your head and flourish again. Either that, or you’re nursing a wicked hangover, and dreading that ten-page paper you’re going to have to write on why Ayn Rand was such a miserable frump. Depending on how it’s going for you, you might already be looking down the barrel of a painfully long semester. But there’s a glimmer of hope–what you can get excited about is the opening of attendee registration for TEDxPSU 2011. Curator Zach Zimbler describes it as “a rock concert of conferences” as opposed to the “science fair on steroids” that I’d originally pegged it for. That is, instead of some kid trying to shove his half-baked invention down your throat with his inevitable tri-fold poster, the emphasis will be more on the presentation, and the ideas. Point is, whether it’s Penn State professor Sam Richards teaching empathy, or researcher Johnny Lee demonstrating what you can do by hacking a Wiimote, TEDxPSU will feature some of the best and brightest minds getting on stage, and presenting their truly exciting and brilliant ideas. For the uninitiated, TEDxPSU is one of the many satellite conferences based off the parent TED talks, which feature some of the most innovative minds in the world–from Bill Clinton to Bill Gates, Malcolm Gladwell to Larry Page and Sergey Brin–sharing their breakthroughs, plans, or just telling stories that conform to TED’s mission of “Ideas Worth Sharing.” Often meeting at the intersection of science and culture, when done right, each speaker will have you questioning the way you see the world. 2010 was the first year that Penn State held its own event, and all reports indicated that it was a resounding success. In the words of our reviewer, it was “mind blowing.” That spirit will be brought back to State College on Sunday, November 13th, when Penn State’s brightest presenters gather in Schwab Auditorium. This year’s theme is “Relics to Revolutions,” which we’ll let Zimbler explain: As surviving memories of our past, links to our antiquity, relics have become the

backbone to today’s revolutions; they are the blueprint to our designs, and the

basis of our ideas. With the past and the future becoming mere perspectives, we

learn from our history in order to inspire and invent the future.

From landing on Mars, to releasing the first movie with surround sound, the

revolutions of our recent history are quickly eclipsed and bring to the forefront

Page 14: TEDxPSUAbout TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a

the change in the world. Encouraging mankind to think past the present, “Relics

to Revolutions” will not belong to those content with the present, but to those

who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Perhaps it’s your philosophy, or your

neighbor’s pragmatic methodology, but it’s a communal belief that sharing Ideas

Worth Spreading will jettison the next wave of great thinkers and doers.

So if you’d like to be in the audience to hear what the presenters have to share, be sure to register on TEDxPSU’s website. Space is limited, so make sure you do it soon. Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about tough times and negative forecasts, so being able to get excited over these great ideas that promise to make the world a better place will be a real treat. Wouldn’t you like to be among the first ones with whom those great ideas are shared?

“TEDxPSU 2011 Event Announced”

The Daily Collegian Registration began yesterday for TEDxPSU’s second annual event on Nov. 13 as TEDxPSU Curator Zach Zimbler announced the event’s theme: “Relics to Revolution.” The “Relics to Revolution” theme focuses on the relation between old and new, and the way in which the past creates perspective for present and future innovation. “Encouraging mankind to think past the present, ‘Relics to Revolutions’ will not belong to those content with the present, but to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” the theme’s abstract states. TEDxPSU is the Penn State-affiliated chapter of Technology Entertainment and Design, an organization tasked with the mission to devote itself to “ideas worth spreading,” according to the non-profit’s website. TED holds various conferences, including two major annual conferences — one in Long Beach, Ca., one in Palm Springs, Fl. and one in Edinburgh, U.K. — that feature talks from speakers and performers who specialize in the areas of technology, entertainment and design. “We aim to have a multidisciplinary understanding, combining speakers with many different viewpoints, from all walks of life, doing really cool things,” Zimbler (senior-supply chain management) said. Three years ago, an offshoot of TED was developed: TEDx, which is a TED conference that is independently organized, where “x” represents “independently organized event.” Zimbler said TEDx events are held in locations across the globe and TEDx conferences at universities are among the most highly attended. When TEDxPSU was developed one year ago and was driven by graduates from the College of Information Sciences and Technology, the organization received over 1,500 applications to attend, for a little less than 900 seats in Schwab Auditorium. Christian Brady, dean of the Schreyer Honors College and affiliated faculty of the College of Information Sciences and Technology, was the emcee for the event and will be the emcee again this year. Brady said that the nature of TEDxPSU distinguishes itself from other on-

campus events. “The nature of TED talks is that they’re not 45 minute to one-hour lectures where you sit and do a question and answer session afterwards,” Brady said. “They’re intended to be more store.” Some of the speakers at TEDxPSU 2010 included entrepreneur and innovator Tone Nudge, popular mash-up artist “DJ Earworm,” author John Rives and more. Travis Mount, Class of 2010, attended TEDxPSU last year and raved about the event. “I've always loved the lectures available on TED's website and having an event so personable and close to my heart at PSU was an opportunity I couldn't miss,” Mount said. Mount has registered for TEDxPSU this year and “can't wait to see what they have in This year, the TEDxPSU event will be held in the HUB, and registration can be completed online. Zimbler also said that the date of the event, Nov. 13, is significant for a variety of reasons related to innovation. For instance, the first spacecraft successfully landed on Mars on Nov. 13, 1971, and the first movie was shown in surround sound on Nov. 13, 1940. As an official student organization, TEDxPSU will also offer various events throughout the year, all with the common theme of providing students an opportunity for multi-disciplinary discussion and innovation.

“Local TED conference unveils theme”

Centre Daily Times TEDxPSU, a conference to be held at Penn State on Nov. 13, has announced its theme. The event, “Relics to Revolutions,” will explore “a communal belief that sharing ideas worth spreading will jettison the next wave of great thinkers and doers,” organizers said. In advance of the conference, TEDxPSU will host a salon Sept. 13 at the State Theatre in State College. Entitled “Innovate and Educate,” the salon will focus on new ideas in education, and will showcase speakers from Penn State’s College of Education. Roger Souse, a professor in the college, Samuel Snotty, a doctoral candidate in special education at Penn State, and J.J. Thomchick, guitarist and recent graduate of Berkley College of Music, will be speaking and performing.

“TEDxPSU introduces a new aspect of higher education”

The Daily Collegian The first TEDx PSU gathering was held Tuesday evening in the Downtown State Theatre. Penn State faculty and a teacher at Pens Valley High School spoke about approaching a new field in education. The theme of event was “Innovate and Educate,” and the event included Leah Bug, Jacqui Wagner and Bill Carlsen, who each gave a presentation at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the State Theatre. TEDx, an independent group that brings together people from technology, entertainment and design fields to talk about innovative ideas. “We’re finding new challenging ways to involve students,” said Tony Lentz, the host and a former Penn State professor. Bug and Wagner provided a joint talk about “rebuild: Bringing Science to Life,” a project about research, education on Burly Ulcer Inundation and Land Disturbance. Bug, the assistant director of Penn State Center for Sciences and the Schools, said Burly ulcer is a disease mostly occurring in rural areas where inhabitants don’t have access to antibiotics or simply neglect the wounds because of their lack of knowledge. The project focuses mainly on collaboration among scientists and teachers. Scientists provide research, while teachers incorporate materials in classrooms. “It’s a strong collaboration they’re building,” Bug said at the event. Wagner, a biology teacher, said she adopted the Spaghetti Diagram, which was originally used by scientists to gather information, into her classroom because it explains how social and environmental factors work together by looking at human interaction with science. “As a biology teacher, I’ve always been interested in scientific literacy and I want students to merge into science rather than looking at it as a course as bystanders,” Wagner said. Carlsen said sustainability is not only for experts but for everyone. “Ordinary people do to reduce impact on the planet through creativity and design,” Carlsen said.

“TEDxPSU Hosts Old Main Bell Tower”

Onward State Have you ever seen Penn State from above? In the second of four TEDxPSU events (three TED mini-salons and one main event on Nov. 13) a few fortunate individuals took part in a brief tour of the iconic Old Main bell tower. The event began on the steps of Old Main around 7 p.m. where an excited, TED-enthused group chatted about the delightful fall evening and anxiously awaited the upward ascent to the bell tower. Once inside, a Penn State Lion Ambassador shared a few PSU archival tidbits about Old Main and the bell tower, the final destination of the brief tour. On the top level of the tower were gorgeous views of Penn State campus, framed by the setting sun over the practice fields west of Atherton Street. For those of you wondering, there are no hands on the tower clock, but they will return when repairs are completed. If you haven’t had the opportunity to climb up the winding three-foot-wide bell tower staircase, to one of the highest points on Penn State’s campus, I highly recommend you add it to your PSU bucket list. Until then, here are a few late afternoon, autumn photographs from the TEDxPSU tour of the Old Main bell tower, and of Penn State’s most cherished views.

“TEDxPSU speakers announced”

The Daily Collegian Three speakers — Michael Mann, Rick Schuhmann and Jack Matson, all Penn State professors —were announced Monday to speak at TEDxPSU’s 2011 event, which will be held Sunday, Nov. 13. The theme for this year’s Technology, Entertainment and Design event is “Relics to Revolution,” which ties in with TED’s overall theme of “Ideas Worth Spreading” by focusing on crucial innovations of our time. “Often these TED talks cover topics that aren’t discussed anywhere. They can be edgy and push the envelope,” said Schuhmann, the Walter L. Robb director of Engineering Leadership Development. He added that he’s always been interested in the program. The “x” in TEDx refers to local events, independent of the official program. TEDx events, Schuhmann said, “are even more remarkable, taking this idea and bringing it down to a local level.” Schuhmann was asked by some of his students to apply to speak at the event. Trying not to give too much away before anyone can hear his talk, Schuhmann revealed that he will be discussing “the most important thing that we, as humans, depend upon in our life: water.” Matson, a professor emeritus of civil engineering, said he will discuss eco-buildings. “Forty percent of the energy consumed in the world goes into buildings,” Matson, who was encouraged by a colleague to apply, said. “It is critical if we’re going to resolve the problems of global warming and climate change that we figure out ways to minimize energy consumption.” He added that TEDx is important in bringing “ideas alive for anybody in the world to see.” Matson will focus on the importance of nature in solving these issues, particularly additions of trees. “We’re heading to a mass extinction of species unless we start taking significant action now,” he said. “That’s why I’m giving my talk — to alert everybody.” Scientific American selected Mann in 2002 as one of the 50 leading visionaries in science and technology. He is also a co-founder of the science website “RealClimate.org.”

In August, Mann was cleared by the National Science Foundation following a two-year investigation into his work regarding global warming. A panel of university professors cleared Penn State professor Mann in 2010 of all wrongdoing in connection with his climate change research. Mann could not be reached by press time Monday. Matt Steiner, director of content at TEDxPSU, said Mann’s talk would delve back into the history of climate, giving more insight into the subject. Steiner (senior-mechanical engineering) said that what ties these speakers together is that “they all have some thing to say about how we coexist in our environment…and how we need to adjust so that we can align and live sustainably.” Additional speakers will be revealed throughout the week. By Friday, the full list will be announced.

“’Galactic cannibalism’ the focus of TEDxPSU talk at Penn State”

Penn State Live UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Adults, children and students alike gathered Oct. 21 to learn about the "cosmic bullies" -- or what we call galaxies -- during a presentation hosted by TEDxPSU, a local, self-organized program designed to bring Penn Staters and the surrounding community together to explore different topics and ideas. Held in Davey Laboratory on the University Park campus, "Black Holes, Galactic Cannibalism, and Telescopes, Oh MY!" featured a talk by Michael Siegel, a research associate in the Eberly College of Science. Siegel explained how galaxies collide and "eat each other," creating newer, bigger galaxies. Our very own Milky Way Galaxy is the product of such a collision, Siegel said. Following Siegel’s presentation, guests visited Penn State’s planetarium, a 15-foot dome located in Davey Laboratory that accurately depicts the sky and all of its stars. Chris Palma, a senior lecturer in the Eberly College of Science, operated the planetarium, showing guests constellations, different kinds of stars and explaining what astrological signs really mean. The next TEDxPSU event, Relics to Revolutions, will be held on Nov. 13. Visit www.tedxpsu.com for more information.

November 4, 2011 “Penn State Brandywine to host TEDxPSU Watch Party”

Penn State Live On Sunday, Nov. 13, Penn State Brandywine will host a TEDxPSU Watch Party as part of a larger event being held at University Park to bring together innovative and thought-provoking individuals to share ideas worth spreading. The participants at the Brandywine event will interact with those at University Park and around the world via the Web to engage in dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing society. The campus hosted two preview events this semester to set the stage for the main event at University Park. Each featured live talks and recorded videos that explored a variety of topics, ranging from gender issues to social media concepts, which encouraged discourse among participants. At the final event, which begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m., attendees will watch live TED videos and presentations being streamed directly from University Park and will be encouraged to respond via Twitter (@TEDxPSU) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TEDxPSU). TED is a nonprofit organization that began in 1984 with a conference designed to open up the lines of communication between the worlds of technology, entertainment and design. Since then, TED has grown into a movement aimed at encouraging dialogue between people from all walks of life. TED talks are generally short, averaging about eight minutes each. However, the themes behind these talks are usually weighty, sparking debate, discussion and fostering critical thinking. This event, which is open to the public, will take place in room 103 of the Tomezsko Classroom Building and lunch will be provided. There is no charge to attend, however, registration is encouraged. The TEDxPSU Watch Party is being co-organized by the Penn State Brandywine Honors program, the Information Sciences and Technology (IST) department, the Laboratory for Civic Engagement and the Penn State Brandywine Alumni Society. “TEDxPSU still scheduled”

The Daily Collegian Despite unrest in the Penn State community, TEDxPSU organizers issued a statement Thursday afternoon, stating their intention to continue on with the event as scheduled. Attendees of the second annual TEDxPSU will explore creative drive and technology’s influence on the future this Sunday. Held in Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center and featuring 16 speakers and performers, the event provides attendees with a chance to learn new ideas and be engaged in discussion. This year’s event will focus on the theme “Relics to Revolutions.” “Relics to Revolutions is about the past that changes the future,” TEDxPSU Curator Zach Zimbler said. Technological revolutions quickly become relics as technology progresses, Zimbler (senior-information sciences and technology) said. TEDx talks — an independently organized conferences that occur worldwide under the Technology, Entertainment, Design name — provide an opportunity to showcase local talent, Zimbler said. Penn State faculty and students presenting in this year’s event live and work in the State College area, he said. TEDxPSU 2011 includes eight Penn State faculty and alumni: Schreyer Honors College Dean Christian Brady Associate women’s studies and international studies professor Mia Bloom Associate music technology professor Mark Ballora Education professor Alison Carr-Chellman 2003 Penn State Undergraduate Student Government President Ian Rosenberger Meteorology professor and climatologist Michael Mann Civil and environmental engineering professor Rick Schuhmann

Professor emeritus of environmental engineering Jack Mattson Bloom noted a challenge in speech preparation. “[The speech] is a little bit different, [you’re presenting to] people who aren’t necessarily experts in subject matter,” Bloom said. Speakers try to make present topics from a new perspective, she said. Bloom will discuss the role of women in terrorism and said the goal of her presentation is to challenge attendees preconceived notions of terrorism, she said. Zimbler described TEDxPSU as a “rock concert of conferences,” that brings together speakers who have “ideas worth spreading.” To select speakers for the event, TEDx organizers fielded speaker applications, accessed a network of contacts and made selections from a general list of professional people and organizations. Bob Brouse, event management director in the Office of Union and Student Activities at the HUB, mentioned a logistical challenge for the speaking event. It’s a football weekend, which means HUB employees will have to wait until the early hours of Sunday morning to begin event setup, Brouse said.

“TEDxPSU billed as excellent experience”

Centre Daily Times The TED conferences have become internationally famous for providing insight and inspiration in an accessible way. They’ll become even more accessible today, when TEDxPSU hosts its second annual event, starting at 9 a.m. in Penn State’s HUB-Robeson Center. While the event has already sold out its 1,200 tickets, Penn State senior Zach Zimbler, the event’s organizer, is still encouraging people to show up. “The cool part is the whole HUB is being taken over. We only have space restrictions in the halls where the event is happening,” he said. “If people want to stop by and see the event, they can see the whole conference on live feed, and can visit booths run by Microsoft, EA Games, Apple and local companies and student groups.” Luminaries speaking at the conference include experts in terrorism, religion, design, climate science and education, among many other topics to be discussed. There will also be art displays and musical performances through the all-day event. “The day is meant to be a time and place where people can come together, learn a whole bunch of amazing things, and share and talk and meet,” Zimbler said. If you can make it to the event, Zimbler promises “lots of surprises.” If you can’t, you can still participate through a live video stream that will be fed to TEDxPSU’s home page, www.TEDxPSU.com.

“PSU holds annual TEDxPSU conference”

The Daily Collegian To Dean of the Schreyer Honors College Christian Brady, people reserve relics as decorations instead of “ideas worth spreading.” Penn State’s second annual TEDxPSU conference hosted 16 speakers, including Brady, with presentations on topics ranging from geocaching to sonification, all apart of the event’s theme “Relics to Revolutions” Sunday. The speakers were selected from a pool of 120 applicants, Matt Steiner, director of content at TEDxPSU, said. Steiner (senior-mechanical engineering) said the theme, besides being a “neat alliteration” was picked because “tinkering around” with relics inspires innovation. Set up in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Alumni Hall , speakers were supplemented by streamed video presentations from past TED conferences in California, from which Penn State’s extension event is licensed, TEDxPSU Curator Zach Zimbler said. “The talks are extremely short, but have a way of captivating people,” Zimbler (senior-information, science, and technology) said. “TEDx is meant to focus on the best speakers in your world. Penn State speakers this year included Director of the Earth System Science Center Michael Mann, who spoke about politician’s attempts to quash scientific data supporting the “hockey stick” model of climate change. Ying Yan Chen (graduate-business administration) said presentations like Mann’s encourage her to think beyond what she learns in her business classes. Performances from Pure Cane Sugar and The Firebird broke up presentations and during the lunch break, students tested out games in booths sponsored by EA Games. Lecturer in Communications Arts and Sciences Melissa Marshall said she is a huge fan of the TED presentations because they are as much about delivery as they are content. That’s what she said makes them so engaging. Marshall teaches CAS 100 (Effective Speech) to engineering students and said she uses examples from TED presentations in her lessons often to demonstrate

Page 37: TEDxPSUAbout TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a

effective and dynamic delivery. She said she “loved” Penn State’s Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education Joseph Valente’s storytelling in his presentation “Hearing the Unheard.” In it, Valente narrated his experience with growing up deaf and his realization he needed to be a “superhero” for deaf children. “We need to stop thinking of them as disabled and start thinking of them as bilingual,” Valente said. David Capatch (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said while one of his favorite TED conference streams, Wael Ghonim’s “Inside the Egyptian Revolution,” was played this year, he liked last year’s speakers better. In particular, he thought Professor of Education Ali Carr-Chellman’s presentation on cyber charter schools was disorganized and hard to follow. Carr-Chellman was the only speaker to be invited back from last year’s TEDxPSU; her presentation receiving the most web traffic on YouTube, Marshall said. This year her presentation criticized the lack of oversight on cyber charters, which causes a funneling of education funds to corporations who run online schools.

“TEDxPSU Inspires PSU”

Onward State In light of recent events, the organizers of this year’s TEDxPSU may have been concerned that the event could get lost in the fray. Those concerns were unfounded however as the community made a strong showing yesterday, filling up much of the allotted space in the HUB. This year’s TEDx theme was Relics to Revolutions, and speakers included Michael Mann, Mia Bloom, Ian Rosenberger, and Joseph Michael Valente who covered topics as diverse as cyber charter schools, the involvement of women in terrorist organizations, and making art from Twitter feeds. Free food was generously offered by the event’s sponsors. There were a few pretty terrible jokes by host Dean Brady, although in fairness he did acknowledge when people called him out for it on Twitter; I think the best of the worst came when he introduced the band Pure Cane Sugar as “something healthier for you than high-fructose corn syrup.” By the way, the band kicked ass, and I’d recommend checking them out on Saturday nights at Zenos. The music provided a great break from the standard speaker model, and served to liven the mood and energize the crowd. This year’s TEDxPSU was a great venue for students and other attendees coming together to learn, think, and be inspired.

About TEDxPSU

TEDxPSU was brought to the Penn State community in 2010. TEDGlobal 2012 “Radical Openness” will be held June 25-29, 2012 in Edinburgh, Scotland. TED and TEDActive 2012 “Full Spectrum” will be held February 27-March 2, 2011 in Long Beach, CA and Palm Springs, CA, respectively.

Behind the Scenes: How did we choose speakers for Relics to Revolutions?

Questions and Answers from Matt Steiner, Director of Content What was the process of choosing the appropriate speakers?

Selecting speakers was a difficult process for our Executive Team. At first, we sat down and brainstormed ideas for speakers that were involved with the most inspiring projects we were aware of. After deciding on a theme, the theme gave our selection process a direction to craft a diverse set of speakers with one common idea threading them all together. We had many great applicants and diverse backgrounds of speakers, and the absolute hardest part was turning down great talks of innovators in the final steps of the selection process.

What were some of the challenges you faced while choosing the speakers?

The largest challenge in hosting a TEDx event is keeping originality in your product. Many TEDx talks have been done up to this point, and we really sought to develop and innovative and fresh cast of speakers to discuss topics that haven't been touched before. Another significant challenge is stringing together almost 15 talks into a cohesive event that is challenging to our audience mentally, inspiring, and hopefully engaging to the global audience on TED.com.

What do you hope attendees take away from attending TEDxPSU?

I hope that people take away a breadth of knowledge. We have a host of people who are the leaders in many disciplines and are bringing to the table ideas that will have ripple effects that are far reaching. I hope attendees can see that old relics we thought little of are becoming revolutions.

Relics to Revolutions Speakers:

What do you think about TED and TEDxPSU? “I think that TEDxPSU gives a unique opportunity to present ones work in a different way; a way that is not only very engaging but can be shown to general audience.” - James Stone “I am most excited to watch everyone’s presentations. I often get sparks of inspiration for new artwork by listening to experts/enthusiasts from other fields talk about their own passions. It’s one reason why I have a small notebook/sketchbook that I bring with me to all events, even though I am no longer a student. I want to be able to jot down any ‘ah-ha’ moments before they are forgotten into the flow of a day.” - Lori Hepner

“I am excited to share my cartoons with a whole new audience.” - Rob Rogers “I am an avid fan of TED.com and when I found out that Penn State had a TED opportunity I jumped at the chance.” - Mia Bloom

“We are all huge TED Talk fans and were thrilled to be invited to participate in TEDxPSU!” - Pure Cane Sugar

“TEDxPSU is important to society because it is an outlet for passionate people to get their message out.” - Eric Mockensturm

Matson views TEDxPSU “as an opportunity for [him] to spread [his] ideas on the role that Eco-Buildings can play in creating a sustainable future for planet Earth.” - Jack Matson

Additional Speaker Biography

Please note, this speaker was not announced to the public, and therefore is not

listed in our program or on our website. It is a surprise presentation, and as a

member of the media, you are being given this biography to use in your articles

after the event. Please keep this information concealed until after the

presentation. Jack Langelann

Jack Langelaan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. One of his research areas focuses on flight path planning for small robotic aircraft, specifically on enabling “bird-like” flight by exploiting winds aloft. This can greatly improve flight efficiency, enabling a host of novel civil and scientific missions that require long duration or long distance flight. In 2011 he was leader of Team Pipistrel-USA.com, winner of the NASA Green Flight Challenge. The Team’s aircraft, the world’s first four-passenger electrically powered aircraft, flew 403 passenger miles per gallon over a 195 mile course at 107 miles per hour: this is more than double the fuel efficiency of a Toyota Prius at double the speed, and roughly seven times the fuel efficiency of typical small aircraft.

Hi Cliff, My name is Lia Peralta and I am part of the communications team for TEDxPSU. The Centre Daily Times previously posted articles about the announcement of the TEDxPSU theme and the TEDxPSUSalon: Finding a Sustainable Future. We would love to invite you and a colleague of your choice to attend the event on Sunday, November 13. TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Hetzel Union Building (HUB). TEDxPSU: Relics to Revolutions will explore Ideas Worth Spreading that will set the stage for the next line-up of innovators. I'm including more information on the theme of Relics to Revolutions below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! Cheers! Lia Peralta TEDxPSU Communications Team [email protected] ============================================================

About Relics to Revolutions As surviving memories of our past, links to our antiquity, relics have become the backbone to today’s revolutions; they are the blueprint to our designs, and the basis of our ideas. With the past and the future becoming mere perspectives, we learn from our history in order to inspire and invent the future. From landing on Mars, to releasing the first movie with surround sound, the revolutions of our recent history are quickly eclipsed and bring to the forefront the change in the world. Encouraging mankind to think past the present, “Relics to Revolutions” will not belong to those content with the present, but to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Perhaps it’s your philosophy, or your neighbor’s pragmatic methodology, but it’s a communal belief that sharing Ideas Worth Spreading will jettison the next wave of great thinkers and doers.

Hi Allison- As TEDxPSU Week begins, I would like to invite you or a representative from the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team to visit our HUB information table on Tuesday, November 8 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. We will be promoting the live stream of our event and our social media channels as ways for students and faculty not attending Relics to Revolutions to stay involved. We will have an easel board where we would love for you to write an idea

that you and/or your club think is Worth Spreading. In the spirit of TED, we would like to take the ideas you write down and create a display that will be shown at the main event on November 13. We also invite you to search for TEDxPSU letters that will be strategically

placed throughout campus for one hour a day from now until Friday. If you find the letters, take a picture with them and Tweet it to @TEDxPSU. These are just a few things to get you in the spirit, and to get you and the rest of the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team excited for TEDxPSU Relics to Revolutions! Cheers! “Fellows Friday with Neha Gupta”

TED Fellow discussion by: Neha Gupta http://blog.ted.com/2011/03/11/fellows-friday-with-neha-gupta/ Blog by: Madeleine Brown Every time you log onto Facebook, what is your purpose? Upload new pictures? Check out what’s going on in the lives of your Facebook friends? Update your status? Procrastinate from doing your homework? What if you could use that time online to help tutor students in need? That’s exactly why Neha Gupta created EachOneTeachOne. By downloading the EachOneTeachOne application while you are logged into Facebook, you will receive a notification saying that a person who might need tutoring is online. You are matched based on the preferences that you set and on what you want to teach or learn. Neha would like to finish her Ph.D. program before the program really takes off, and the programmers are still working on the details, but Neha says that the EachOneTeachOne has a lot of promise! Neha is also involved in inventing a group of applications called “MyeVyu” and “V911,” both are smart phone applications that were created help students improve their quality of life.

“Jill’s powerful stroke of insight”

TED2008 Talk by: Jill Bolte Taylor http://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html Blog by: Caroline Keating Inspired by her experience growing up with a brother diagnosed with schizophrenia, Jill Bolte Taylor acquired an interest in studies of the human brain long before she became a research scientist. Jill chose specifically to study mental illnesses and their effect on the human brain. She performed scientific studies during the day, and at night, she devoted her time to the National Alliance for Mental Illness. In December 1996, Jill experienced a brain hemorrhage, which disabled her speech, cognition and walking ability. Through her previous examination of the different hemispheres of the brain, their inherent functions and the communication among them, she was able to combine her research with a real-life situation to reach new bounds on the brain research front. She was able to fully experience what happens when the brain cannot communicate internally, as she rapidly began to lose normal functional abilities. Her headache quickly accelerated from a blurry, confusing feeling paired with loss of memory, to realizing that she was having a stroke. Despite the pain and confusion that she was experiencing, she was able to mentally separate herself from the situation in attempts to get help. It was a lesson-learning experience in how some cognitive responses are all connected, from thought processes, to language, to motor skills. Jill’s story serves as an inspiration to others: share your stories and experiences, regardless of how they came about. She took a terrifying life situation and turned it into a scientific experiment in order to share information with and help others. Jill’s TED talk is informative and inspirational, and everyone should take the time to watch it. It truly exemplifies the human ideal to never give up, and to always look ahead, even during an extremely negative and disheartening experiences. Jill is a proponent for a health field that has not always been given top priority, but is in fact extremely important to the every day life of human beings. She is not only an impressive scientist, but also an amazing human being who embodies what TED is all about.

“How big brands can save biodiversity”

TEDGlobal2010 Talk by: Jason Clay http://www.ted.com/talks/jason_clay_how_big_brands_can_save_biodiversity.html Blog by: Victoria Maseda As a nation that engages in rapid consumerism, America is one part of the whole that is responsible for unsustainable practices that harm the environment. In his 2010 TEDGLOBAL Talk, “How big brands can save biodiversity,” Jason Clay examines the importance of teamwork in the promotion of a sustainable world. Specifically, Jason challenges the 100 companies that control 25% of the world’s 15 most valuable commodities to engage in eco-friendly production of these precious goods. According to Jason, the leverage power that companies have outweighs the power and decision making skills of any consumer. Not only would sustainable practices from big name companies such as Cargill, Mars, Starbucks or McDonald’s have an influence on consumers, but those practices would also influence their brand competitors. For example, Cargill currently controls 20-25% of global palm oil – a notable commodity – that makes this corporate powerhouse a major influence of the palm oil industry. In an effort to keep up with the competition, other companies might feel pressured by Cargill’s eco-friendly advances to change their production system. One person cannot correct the unsustainable practices of the world nor can one company. Jason reminds us that it is not about what to think about sustainability as consumers but that it is more important to evaluate how we think about the concept of sustainability. He calls for people and companies who have never worked together to join forces in order to create significant change in the environment. As inhabitants of this planet it is imperative to remember that we only get one finite Earth. Jason points out that whatever was sustainable for a population of six billion cannot support a population of nine billion. Consumerism and sustainability are interrelated. As consumers in a nation that uses on average 43 times more than an African consumer, Americans must change how they view the environment and always think towards the future. A goal of TEDxPSU is to utilize Penn State’s large university environment and vast alumni base to create positive change in the world through discussion and action. Engaging in sustainable practices in a close community, such as Penn State, can only encourage a promising future for our planet. However, as Jason points out numerous times, it will take a lot of collaboration between groups that have never worked together before to kick start influential change. In a somewhat biased opinion, Penn State is a great place for change to start. The time is now.

“Thomas Suarez: A 12-year-old app developer”

TEDxManhattanBeach Talk by: Thomas Suarez http://www.ted.com/talks/thomas_suarez_a_12_year_old_app_developer.html Blog by: Alexis Morgan Meet Thomas Suarez. Thomas is not your typical 12-year-old boy. While most kids his age are playing video games, he's busy creating iPhone, iPad and iPod apps, making Thomas the youngest app developer in the world. Since before Thomas could write, he's been fascinated with computers an technology. He has even started his own company CarrotCorp, which sells four mobile apps for the iOs platform. His favorite and most successful app is called “Bustin Jieber.” The game application is like Whac-o-Mole with Justin Bieber as the mole. Thomas released the app just before the holidays last year. The game also allows more than one player to play over the Game Center, and players can talk together while playing via Voice Chat. Thomas has also created Earth Fortune, which displays different colors of Earth depending on what your fortune is. In this Ted Talk, Thomas spoke of how he became interested in coding as a kindergartener, and eventually began teaching himself programming basics in Python, C, and Java. He said he began to create and sell his own applications when Apple released the Software Development Kit. The well-spoken middle-schooler said, "A lot of kids these days like to play games, but now they want to make them." Thomas explains there aren't many resources that allow one to become familiar with app development. "For soccer you could go to a soccer team. For violin, you can get violin instruction," he said. But when Apple released a software development kit, it opened up a whole new world of possibility for Thomas. He is working with his teacher sponsor to create educational iPad apps that will be distributed to local school districts free of charge. Keeping the crowd laughing, the youngest app developer in the world said with the encouragement from his family, friends, and people from Apple, he hopes to continue creating apps in the future and move on to Android platform development.

“David Gallo on life in the deep oceans” TED1998 Talk by: David Gallo http://www.ted.com/talks/david_gallo_on_life_in_the_deep_oceans.html Blog by: Kristin Richards It is early 1998 and James Cameron’s Titanic hit theaters the December before. “We've got some of the most incredible video of the Titanic that's ever been seen, and we're not going to show you any of it,” David Gallo and Bill Lange opened with a laugh at a 1998 TED conference. “The truth of the matter is that the Titanic -- even though it's breaking all sorts of box office records -- it's not the most exciting story from the sea.” We tend to take the ocean for granted. Approximately 75 percent of the Earth is water and we have not even begun to explore most of it, but David Gallo works to push the bounds of ocean discovery. Active in undersea exploration, and sometimes in partnership with legendary Titanic-hunter Robert Ballard, David was one of the first oceanographers to use a combination of manned submersibles and robots to map the ocean world with unprecedented clarity and detail. We tend to forget that the ocean is miles deep; we’re just not familiar with what exists beyond the first couple hundred feet. Together with Bill Lange, who acquired cameras to capture the deep-sea clips, David provides incredible visuals with a close look at life in the deep oceans in this TED Talk. The creatures that David presents are stunning and really push the boundaries of your imagination as to what may exist at the bottom of the ocean. Some of the animals that David shows can grow up to 140-160 feet long and sprout all sorts of tentacles. Beyond the deep blue sea are ecosystems with “biodensities and biodiversity higher than the rainforest.” The deep sea really is a world within a world, and truly something to behold. We look to space for the origin of life yet the origin of man may be closer than you think. It very may well be at the core of our being, our planet and our existence.

R E L I C S T O R E V O L U T I O N SAs surviving memories of our past, links to our antiquity, relics have become the backbone to today’s revolutions; they are the blueprint to our designs, and the basis of our ideas. With the past and the future becoming mere perspectives, we learn from our history in order to inspire and invent the future. Encouraging mankind to think past the present, “Relics to Revolutions” will not belong to those content with the present, but to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
