Muskegon Rotary Past President Larry Wright passed away last week. Larry, as many will recall, was the founder, prime mover, and champion of the Club's Grape Escape fundraiser and was instrumental in the electronic modernization of our RIM newsletter. He was serving as Chair of the Muskegon Community College Board of Trustees, and was active in many other worthwhile community causes. Larry will be missed and remembered. Condolences to Jane and their family.
Muskegon Grapevine In our new Lake House digs, President John presided over a jam-packed meeting colored by a fitting tribute to Larry Wright by John, Tom Powers, Bob Scolnik, Dale Nesbary and others. This year’s Grape Escape on September 22 will be dedicated to Larry, the “godfather” of the event. Speaking of which, Tom Powers announced a meeting of those interested in helping with Grape Escape – Wednesday, August 24 at The Lake House. Any and all are invited. Continued on page 2

DJ Hilson is scheduled for Red Star on His Badge removal next week (the news media have been notified), and President John is wondering who else among the newbies might be ready for that momentous ceremony. Tom Powers or Doug Pollock, we think it was, told us that we’ve only sold 77 tickets to next month’s Grape
Escape. There are 403 tickets still to be sold if we’re to meet our sales bogey. There will be big prizes (ie, luxurious lodging/ dinner, a kayak trip on the Muskegon River) for the people who sell the most Grape Escape tickets. Above that, see Linda
Zolman to sign up for your 90-minute Grape Escape shift. Can we all help, please? The absent Frank Marczak received outrageous kudos from President
John (Frank would’ve been embarrassed by all the huzzahs, we’re sure) for putting together a great program schedule that’s full-up for the remainder of the year. Anyone with a good program idea, please get ahold of Frank, and tell him “RIM sent me.” Speaking of programs – c’mon, yes we were – we’ve put in a request to have Governor Snyder come to one of our meetings. Anyone who has any “pull” with him, please help or see Dave Alexander. Rotary Park is a little over 20% away from reaching its fundraising goal of $200,000, Nancy Crandall told us.

Two years ago Merri Davis’ kids told her she needed a hobby. She decided to take up hula hooping. That turned into what is now Hoop Happy Hoop Healthy LLC.
Merri was looking to get rid of her “muffin top” and saw hooping as a way to do this. When she saw how it helped her, she made several hoops and gave them to friends as early Christmas presents in the fall of 2010. All the girls came back and had lost inches, and they wanted her to make more for their friends. She had a vision: “If this

works for 12 girls, why not everyone?” It was at that point she came up with the slogan “Hoop Girls don’t have Muffin Tops.”

For the last two years, Merri has offered free Hoop Fit classes at Beach Elementary. She also offers free classes at the Muskegon Y. Hoop Happy has grown from 12 girls to more than 1,300 women
and men. Any of you who were at last week’s meeting saw Secretary
Lox doing the “Slow Hoop.” Hoop Fit classes are a great
cardio workout. They build core strength, improve flexibility, balance and they boost energy. There are side effects to Hooping: laughter, lost inches, friendship, emotional health and self-confidence. Merri’s programs include Custom Hoops, Make & Tape Parties, Birthday Parties & Events, Classes & Gatherings, and Business Sponsored Health.
