WORKING BEE Out thanks to the 20 families and 6 staff who came along to our working bee on Sunday. In what was a rain-affected day, we got most of our jobs completed: Putting in a new fence at the drop off bay. This will make it
much safer for the children in waiting for pick up after school Built a retaining wall to hold in the soft fall mulch around our
new playground equipment. While it didn’t get fully completed, the bulk was done in what was a massive job in one day
Repairing and unearthing storm water pits probably not seen since there was a saw mill on this site
Replacing some ag-flow outside the hall with proper drainage Repairing downpipes that were dangerous Garden beds and paths all swept and cleaned The oval running track raked so that no pine needle will dare
land there again Spoon drains were repaired so that water has somewhere to
run Some concreting was done before the rain came. Many other indoor and outdoor jobs were completed.
My thanks to everyone who attended. Your commitment saved the school many thousands of dollars in not getting trades in and has made the yard safer, more attractive and with the advent of the playground, more fun for our children. Thank you!
GREAT COMMUNITY
CAR RAFFLE All Raffle Tickets must be returned to the office by tomorrow. Even if you have not sold your tickets, we need them back please. Remember: every dollar raised goes back to the school!!
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT Our new playground is up and running thanks to the retaining wall being built by Nathan, Steve, Mike and Antony at the working bee. You can see from the photo how popular it is. We have mulch under the areas we need to and the children have been that excited before school, during breaks and after school. We have stage 2 coming up with some major fundraising initiatives to replace the old section with some new equipment. Judging by how the children have taken to stage 1, I’m sure stage 2 will be just as popular. Photos of stage 2 are on the real estate sign at the entry to the office. 2017 PARENT OPINION SURVEY/S The 2017 Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted online between Monday 7 August 2017 and Sunday 27 August 2017. The refreshed survey is aligned with the new Student Attitudes to School Survey and three of the key areas outlined in the government’s Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO); excellence in teaching and learning positive climate for learning community engagement in learning In addition to these FISO priority areas, a key focus for the Parent Opinion Survey is the Education State ambition: pride and confidence in our schools. Like the Attitudes to School Survey (which our Year 4 - 6 students completed earlier this year – and the returned results are being analyzed presently, the Parent Opinion Survey is now online for faster turn-around time on results and improved data quality. The survey will be administered from a secure online survey platform to provide the following benefits to our school’s parents: the online survey provides flexibility for parents to complete the survey at any time that fits
their own schedules schools and parents are no longer required to manage and return paper data forms schools will be able to access their own survey results from this portal after the survey has
closed, shortening the turn-around time on survey results parent responses are confidential, and parents can be reassured that schools are unable to
link responses to individuals. The information that is collected from each parent will be kept confidential at all times. Confidenti-ality will be maintained by ensuring that: information that could identify individuals, such as names and dates of birth, will not be
asked in the survey
Before After
ORIMA Research and the Department will not know which parents have been selected to participate in the survey
survey links are distributed to parents by our school at random We will soon be contacting parents directly to invite them to participate, and providing them with the survey link. ORIMA Research Pty Ltd will not have any direct contact with parents, nor be provided with the contact details of parents or families. The Department of Education and Training does not release any personal identifying data to schools or the supplier administering the Parent Opinion Survey. The annual Parent Opinion Survey is mandatory for schools to participate in; it is an important part of parent engagement and assists with future planning and improvement. Parents can complete the survey using any connected device even mobile phones. Parents that do not have access to a connected device to complete the survey or parents who require assistance with translations, can contact the office for further assistance. The survey is available in six different languages, which will be made available to the randomly selected group of participants. Parents are asked to generalize and form an opinion about the school or teachers. As the data is not intended for discussion relating to individual teacher performance, is not relevant. What can we do with the survey results? Our school will utilise the data in a number of ways, to: monitor levels of student engagement and wellbeing compare school level data on engagement with state-wide benchmarks stimulate discussion within the school community about how to improve parent engagement assist in the identification of areas for improvement and professional development needs in
the school. We wish to thank in advance parents who might assist us in the coming weeks in completing this survey. Although no school can claim to be perfect, our community members continue to work really hard together; staff, students and parent groups alike, for better outcomes, resources and opportunities for all students and families at Tecoma PS. These feedback opportunities are important ways in which we can continue to improve. As always, it’s important to list areas that you are happy with and engage our child/ren, as well as suggestions the school can look further towards implementing. WORKING TOGETHER As evidenced by the work undertaken at the working bee, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents and grandparents who come to school to help and support in a variety of ways. This may occur through helping in classrooms, attending excursions, helping at working bees and our hard working Parent Network. It is very satisfying to hear positive feedback from parents and families about their time volunteering at school in the classroom. We are always looking to promote greater parent engagement in learning at school. Being involved gives you a greater sense of what is happening in the school and your child will see that you value their school time. There are many ways in which parents can assist in classrooms, and all that is required is a Working with Children Check. The application is simple to complete online, is free for volunteers and once the application has been made, most applicants can begin volunteering immediately.

WORDS FROM MRS DOUBLE CHILD SAFETY STANDARDS Child Safe Standards: As part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Betrayal of Trust report, this time last year a regulatory landscape surrounding child safety, underpinned by new Child Safe Standards was introduced at our school. The Child Safe Standards are compulsory minimum standards for all Victorian schools, to ensure they are well prepared to protect children from abuse and neglect. To create and maintain a child safe organisation, an entity to which the Child Safe Standards apply must have: strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety, including through effective
leadership arrangements a child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety a code of conduct that establishes clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with
children screening, supervision, training and other human resources practices that reduce the risk of
child abuse by new and existing personnel processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children. Ministerial Order No. 870, which operationalises the Child Safe Standards in all Victorian schools, came into operation on 1 August, 2016. This is available for you to read at: http://www.vrqa.vic.gov.au/childsafe/Pages/documents/Min%20Order%20870%20Child%20Safe%20Standards.pdf In order to ensure our school continues to meet these requirements we created the Tecoma Pri-mary School’s Child Safety Policy, for all members of our school community to read and sign. It is a requirement that all staff, School Councillors and members of our school community who volunteer at Tecoma Primary School (listening to reading, Reading Room, assisting in class-rooms, Parent Network members, assist in the uniform shop, attending excursions, attend sport-ing events, attending school camps, etc.) sign this form and return it to the office. This will en-sure we meet the Child Safety requirements and that we are able to confidently show we have established clear expectations for appropriate behaviour with children, which is enforced at our school. It is very important that all school volunteers are aware that in this order: School staff means: (a) in a Government school, an individual working in a school environment who is: (i) employed under Part 2.4 of the ETR Act in the government teaching service; or (ii) employed under a contract of service by the council of the school under Part 2.3 of the ETR Act; or (iii) a volunteer or a contracted service provider (whether or not a body corporate or any other person is an intermediary). It also states that child-connected work means work authorised by the school governing authority and performed by an adult in a school environment while children are present or reasonably expected to be present.

Divisional AFL
Congratulations to our 19 girls and 22 boys in grade 4, 5 and 6 who took part in the Divisional AFL Finals on Wednesday 19th July.
We had true footy weather for the event with rain, a tiny bit of sun, wind and lots of mud! Tecoma had a successful day with our boys and girls teams playing & winning a few of their round robin 20 minute games against other district champion schools within our division. Our students did an amazing job representing Tecoma and both teams played some really good football. There was constant cheering flowing from both the students and parents from Tecoma. Congratulations on a great day!
Thank-you to Andy McGuiness for coaching the girls team, Paul Piaser and Mr McLean for coaching the boys team, Jordan Gray for being our goal umpire and Marnie Martin for scoring the boys games.
