LOHRI
Lohri, a famous festival celebrated in north India, marks the
culmination of winter. The festival is an emblem of gratitude
towards nature and connotes the beginning of new spring of life.
On 13th January 2016, NIT Uttarakhand celebrated this festival of
jubilation once again. The Registrar of the Institute Colonel
Sukhpal Singh, faculty members including Dr. Anirban Mukherjee,
Mr. Navjot Singh, Dr. D. B. Singh, Dr. Kuldeep Sharma,
administrative staff and the students of the all four years
participated in this joyous event with immense zeal. As this
festival commemorates the passing of the winter solstice, a blazing
bonfire was lit by participants to enjoy the circle of warmth.
Everyone wished for prosperity and happiness by offering peanuts
and til (sesame seed) in the auspicious fire. The students expressed
their joy on the occasions by dancing and singing. Thus the
celebration of Lohri in the Institute epitomized the sentiment of
love, gratitude, and sprit of brotherhood.
REPUBLIC DAY 2016
The Institute ceremonialized the auspicious occasion of 67th anniversary of Republic Day of India with great reverence. The
honorable Director of the Institute, Professor H. T Thorat, Registrar, Col. Sukhpal Singh Singh, faculty members, staff members and
students gathered at the ITI campus to celebrate the event. The program started with the flag hoisting by the Director followed by the
hymn of the National Anthem. Afterwards Professor Thorat delivered an influential speech highlighting the sanctity of the day and the
Constitution of the nation. Students presented patriotic songs and poems with heartfelt emotions. On this very day, everyone took the
cleanliness oath along with the honorable Director and pledged their responsibilities of being a part of the “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan”.
The function concluded with the Registrar offering the Vote of Thanks. After the rapture of the feelings of honour, pride, and devotion
towards the nation so exhibited in the songs and poems during the program, everybody enjoyed the refreshment.
INSTITUTE GATHERING
The penultimate week of January involved a splendid show of cultural, sports and literary events at the National Institute of
Technology, Uttarakhand. A number of inter-branch competitions were organized from 23rd
to 24th
of January to delightfully mark the
''Sparks '16", the Institute Gathering. The students were immersed in the spirits of team-work, leadership, and healthy competition.
Every face was brimming with excitement and every eye was affixed to the scoreboard, cheered for their branches throughout the
week.
There was no dearth of enthusiasm in the students to seize the coveted winning title for their branches. Finally the fluctuating score-
board settled on 21st January 2016, declaring the Computer Science and Engineering Department as the overall winner and conferring
the second place to the Civil Engineering Department. With the co-operation of students and staff, the Council of Student Activities
(CSA), NIT Uttarakhand organized yet another successful event.
KABADDI TOURNAMENT
NIT Uttarakhand organized a Kabaddi Tournament for the students. Overall eight teams of nine players participated with the vision
of glorifying their teams by winning the title of Kabaddi Championship. Kabaddi has now been included as a major sport in
Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth games, etc. The Kabaddi tournament at NIT Uttarakhand consisted of 16 knock-out
matches, two semifinals and a Grand finale match among the eight teams. The championship continued for two weeks. In the final
championship, two best teams performed with enormous zeal and enthusiasm. The vigorous tactics applied by the teams were
praiseworthy. The flexibility in grasping the adversaries and lissomness in body movements of players inevitably forced the
audiences to applaud the performances.
The prolonged tournament was punctuated with liveliness, pride, spirit and endearing cheers.
Saraswati Puja was celebrated at the Institute on 13th March 2016 with traditional gaiety and religious fervor.
The Puja began in the morning with prayers at the „pandal‟ which was beautifully decorated with festoons and
colorful banners. After enchanting „aarti‟, sweets and „prasad‟ were distributed. The Puja continued for two
days. On the next morning, the immersion ceremony was organized. The huge crowd of devotees gathered
together to show their reverence to Goddess Saraswati. The idol was immersed in the Alaknanda River with
devotion and respect.
A two-days workshop on “Entrepreneurship Development Programme” was
organized at NIT Uttarakhand in collaboration with the National Institute for
Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD) between 13th
and 14th
February 2016. Professor H.T. Thorat, Director NIT Uttarakhand,
inaugurated the workshop and welcomed the guest faculty Mr. Hardik Rawat
from NIESBUD. In his inaugural speech, he told the students about the
importance of this workshop and sighted many examples of engineers becoming
the successful entrepreneurs. He motivated the students to think innovative in the
field of entrepreneurship and assured them of all possible help in converting their
ideas to successful business strategies.
Mr. Hardik Rawat, commenced the workshop programme with his perspicacious
knowledge and by sharing practical experiences on visionary decisions, success
in business and growth in startups. In the due course of two-days workshop on
Entrepreneurship, many ideas, concepts, possibilities got unfolded and many
obstacles, distractions got effaced.
This informative and enlightening workshop ended with Vote of Thanks by Mr.
Vikas Kukshal, faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOP
CLIFFESTO 2016: DOWN TO CLOWN
The Annual Techno-Cultural Event of the Institute, “Cliffesto” was organized between 19th to 21
st February 2016. However, various
pre-fest events like the „Blood Donation Camp‟ and „Cleanliness Drive‟ were organized a week prior to the actual event. Cliffesto was
inaugurated on the evening of 18th February 2016 with lamp lightening ceremony in the esteemed presence of Honourable Director,
Registrar, Associate Dean (Student Welfare) and Faculty members. The evening was studded with some stupendous performances
from the students and the refreshing performance by “Keechad Band”.
The first day of the festival witnessed many cultural events like Solo singing, Solo dance, Street play, Poetry Competitions and
Technical events in the form of MATLAB Workshop, Debugging, Lan Gaming, Robokick. The evening had wonderful performance
in the form of BAND WARS, in which different bands performed. The second Day was full of mesmerizing events like PIZZAZ
(Fashion show), Duet singing, Standup Comedy, Group Dance, Mimicry and Rafting workshop.
Technical events like RASBERRY PI workshop, Engine Assembly Workshop, Code Clash, Robo War were organized with a huge
participation of students. However, the event of the day was the EDM night by Sunburn.
The final day had technical events like Grid Runner, RoboCoursa, Reincarnation and they were followed by finals of some of the
cultural performances like Solo Singing , Solo Dance, Street Play and Pizazz (Fashion Show) with prize distribution ceremony.
Besides, it is a matter of great pride to report that for the first time in Uttarakhnand, a college festival having a unique event like
Weapon Display Exhibition, which was organized by the Sixth Battalion of Kumaon Regiment.
The final closing night witnessed the heart throbbing performance of none other than the king of Desi Rap “BOHEMIA”. With more
than 1300 students having registered the festival, Cliffesto 2016 was way bigger and successful than ever before.
NIT UTTARAKHAND: FIRST CONVOCATION
National Institute of Technology Uttarakhand, celebrated its first Convocation Ceremony on 14th
March 2016. The
ceremony took place at the temporary campus of the Institute located in the beautiful valley of Srinagar, Garhwal. Shri K.
Ravi Kumar, Ex Director, BHEL, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the function. Shri Bhaskar Bhat, the Chairman,
Board of Governors, NIT Uttarakhand, Senate members and other dignitaries were invited in the ceremony.
The ceremony began with the arrival of academic procession in the hall and was followed by National Anthem which set the
tone of this first Convocation in the valley. After this Professorr, H.T.Thorat, Director of the Institute, presented a Welcome
Speech and an exclusive report on the Institute. Shri Bhaskar Bhat congratulated the students and wished them success in
building future careers and serving the state and the nation. The Chief Guest emphasized the need to serve country and
humanity by bringing out the best in oneself through strong determination and high goals. Throughout the programme, the
sense of pride and achievement was palpable among the students, families, faculty and staff members of the Institute.
National Institute of Technology Uttarakhand, organized an
Adventure Week for its students from 19th March 2016 to
23rd march 2016 at Gwaldam with the help of SSB Academy,
Srinagar, Garhwal. A total of 79 students and 14 staff
members of the Institute participated in the same. The
adventure training began with jungle survival demonstrations
by the military officials. Further activities involved
Mountaineering, Hiking, Tracking, Rappelling, Camping,
Commando Training, Physical Training, etc. Participants were
made familiar to concealment training and were provided
exposure to different kinds of explosions. Finally, a Weapon
Display Exhibition was arranged to document the
advancement in arms and ammunition in India. Thus, the
Adventure Week at Gwaldam provided the students and staff
members of NIT Uttarakhand a unique and noteworthy
experience of its kind. The exhilarating adventure trip
concluded with a formal thanking ceremony which started
with the presentation of memento as a token of respect to the
honorable Commandant Mr. Sumit Joshi. The effort taken by
NIT Uttarakhand was a noteworthy success.
ADVENTURE TRIP TO GWALDAM
National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand hoasted a flute
recital by illustrious artist Pt. Ronu Majumdar under the aegis of
SPIC MACAY on 30th
March 2016 in the auditorium. Pt. Ronu
Majumdar, a legend in the field of instrumental music from
Varanasi and a disciple of renowned artist Pt. Ravi Shankar along
with tabla artist Mr. Durjay Bhaumik and Mr. Kalpesh, a flute
companion, were accorded a traditional welcome. The programme
was commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Pt. Ronu
Majumdar started the program with the melodious „aalap‟, which
was transcended deep down in the hearts of audience. His
interaction with the audience was very interesting and they sang
„Vande Mataram‟ and „Vaishnavjan‟ along with the tune of flute.
The performance kept the audience spellbound. The atmosphere got
pulsating with the jugalbandi of flute and tabla, in which students
participated enthusiastically. Dr. Anirban Mukherjee, Dean of
Students Welfare, delivered the Vote of Thanks to artists and the
organization. The Director, Professor H.T. Thorat, presented
mementos to these eminent artists.
CV WORKSHOP: A CAREER DRIVE
The Training and Placement Cell of the Institute organized a three days workshop on Resume Preparation and Campus Recruitment
Training from 1st April 2016 to 3
rd April 2016. The workshop focused on boosting the CV profile of pre-final year students and
navigating them to new fields of interests. The first day session was initiated by Prof. Yogesh Deshpande from VNIT Nagpur and
later accompanied by Mr. Anirudhha Pathak, an expert in HR Training and Soft Skills Training Exercises. Both the experts aimed at
trampling down the job apprehensions and jitters and enlightened students in taking firm decisions on career front. Mr. Nayab Danish
Siddiqui, a CRT expert also elaborated on the career alternatives avaialable to the students.
The second day entailed many important sessions as a lot of expert tips were provided to the audience. Later a detailed presentation
was given by Mr. Anirudhha Pathak regarding the do‟s and don‟ts while constructing a resume. Utmost importance was given to the
mock interview sessions which highlighted the importance of dress-code and positive body language. The third day marked by one to
one counselling sessions for every student where individuals were asked to share their problems and doubts. The unparalleled advice
from the experts guided and motivated the students to shift gears for approaching years of their career plan.

YOGA WEEK: CELEBRATION OF HEALTHY LIFE
The International Yoga Day is observed on 21st June every year since 2015. Yoga is a spiritual discipline aimed to promote control of the
body and mind and is seen worldwide as a legacy of rich Indian culture and history. This year the Institute organized many competitions
and sessions under the banner of Yoga Week from 15th
to 21st of June 2016. It commenced on 15
th June with a speech by Registrar Col.
Sukhpal Singh along with a video presentation on various forms of Yoga „asanas‟ and „kriyas‟ , highlighting the various aspects of Yoga.
On the following day, competitions like painting, poster designing, logo designing and essay writing on topics related to Yoga were
conducted with active participation by the students. A book exhibition on Yoga accentuating the vitality of this art of life was arranged.
The next two days, students and faculty members practiced Pranayam- a class of breathing exercises and Yoga asanas in the ITI campus.
In an invited talk by Dr. Ghanshyam Thakur, HOD, Yoga Department, HNB Garhwal University, he delivered a lecture along with a
short practice session for the participants. The final day, 21st June started with a Yoga session by the Institute‟s Yoga instructor, Mr.
Pradeep Rawal. The event concluded with prize distribution ceremony to felicitate the winners of the respective competitions. The
Registrar presented mementos to the students. This week- long celebration acquainted everyone with Yoga and its sanctity and added a
healthy week to their lives. Students and faculty members both attended all the events enthusiastically. Everyone acquired knowledge,
skills and got aware of various nuances of this day and Yoga and realized what made Yoga get global popularity and recognition. It was
a fruitful celebration.
