Roads and build- ings, many of them historic landmarks such as the Dha- rahara Tower in Kathman- du, were destroyed. The government said 1,500 bodies had been reco- vered. An equal number of people are said to be injured. The death toll is mounting and rescue operations have proved difficult given the mountainous terrain. A clearer estimate of casual- ties and damage could take days. The U.S. Geological Sur- vey said the epicentre was Lamjung district in western Nepal. The quake hit at 11.56 a.m. Nepal Standard Time (11.41 a.m. IST). People took shelter in open spaces, fields, the pal- ace venue and schools. Many foreign tourists are stranded at Thamel. The residents of the capital are out on the streets. The government has opened the gates of the Sing- ha Durbar for people to take shelter. Emergency meeting The Cabinet held an emer- gency meeting and declared an emergency in the quake- hit areas. The most affected districts. besides the three districts of the capital, Kath- mandu, Lalitpur and Bhak- tapur, are Kavre Gorkha, Nuwakot and Makwanpur in central Nepal and Ramech- hap, Okhaldhunga and Bhoj- pur in the east. Some 40 of the 75 districts have been af- fected. Tremors through the afternoon lasted as long as 45 seconds. The last strong tremor occurred around 3.15 p.m. local time (3 p.m. IST). The Dharahara Tower, in the heart of the capital and built in 1832, collapsed, trap- ping people. The Kalomo- chan temple at Thapathali was destroyed, as was the King Mahendra statue at Tripureshwar. Nepal has been hit by oc- casional earthquakes over the past years. The last mas- sive earthquake to hit Nepal and parts of north India was in 1934. Over 10,000 were killed in Nepal and about 7,200 in Bihar. Ambedkar as a nationalist Hindu icon, taking a leaf out of the Chinese government rule book, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has now proposed that Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani establish an Indian Institute of Classical Studies to promote Indian languages abroad, on the lines of China’s Confucius Institute. The proposal comes from the India Policy Foundation, a think tank funded entirely by the RSS, with senior Sangh functionaries Dattatreya Hosabale and Manmohan Vaidya on its board. While Mr. Hosabale, sah sarkaryavah or joint secretary of the RSS and tipped to take over its reins in the near future, Mr. Vaidya is the All India Prachar Pramukh of the RSS. The foundation, it is learnt, wields considerable clout and has stalled key legislation in the past. Looking to the Confucius Institute for inspiration, in a letter dated April 23, the honorary director of the institute, Rakesh Sinha, writes: “Given that Indian literature and languages are already recognised as one of the most scientific languages in the world, the Government of India must consider conceptualising an institution/centre which could be established in reputed universities in foreign countries — on the lines of the Confucius Institute.” Anuradha Raman RSS think tank pitches for Institute for Classical Studies INITIATIVE FOR CULTURAL NATIONALISM | PAGE 10 EXCLUSIVE NEW DELHI: “Fear is just a line in your head. You can choose what side of that line you want to be on … you can’t let fear control you,” Sabeen Mahmud, a Karachi-based activist who was killed on Friday, told the magazine Wired in an interview in 2013. Ms. Mahmud, who was laid to rest in Karachi on Sat- urday even as her mother battles for life in hospital, is remembered by all as fear- less. She refused to employ armed guards to protect her, as many others in Pakistan do. A day after Ms. Mahmud was gunned down as she was driving home from her coffee house, The Second Floor (T2F), Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif con- demned the killing and or- dered a full inquiry. But few in Pakistan hold out much hope that an investigation would lead anywhere. Just minutes before gun- men opened fire, Ms. Mah- mud and her mother had attended a talk she had orga- nised for activists from Ba- lochistan. Mama Qadeer Baloch, who spoke along with others on the subject of human rights violations in Balochistan, was supposed to have spoken at the Lahore University of Management Sciences two weeks before. At the last minute, howev- er, the talk was cancelled, al- legedly on government directions. This angered Ms. Mahmud. Known for her tech-savvy and organisation- al skills, she decided to hold the talk at her coffee house- cum-meeting place, inviting people via Twitter. National Disaster Re- sponse Force teams have be- gun rescue work in the affected areas. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said 38 persons were killed in Bihar. Ten were killed in Uttar Pradesh and three in West Bengal. As soon as the first reports came in, Prime Minister Na- rendra Modi ordered the dis- patch of relief and rescue teams to the affected areas. Mr. Modi also spoke to Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav, Nitish Kumar, Mamata Ba- nerjee, Pawan Kumar Cham- ling and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The Prime Minis- ter also spoke to the Nepa- lese President. The C-130J Super Her- cules aircraft of the Indian Air Force landed at Kath- mandu with 39 NDRF per- sonnel and 3.5 tonnes of relief material. The aircraft brought 55 Indian evacuees here around 10.45 p.m., De- fence Ministry spokesperson said. Earlier, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vi- kas Swarup said an IL-76 and a C-17 aircraft had been sent to Kathmandu to ferry Indi- an nationals. On Saturday, MEA Officials confirmed that a house within the precincts of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu had collapsed, killing the daughter of the staffer Madan, and seriously injuring his wife. “A house in our Embassy complex collapsed. Unfortunately, the daughter of our employee Madan has died. His wife’s condition is serious,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted. The avalanche struck be- tween the Khumbu Icefall, a notoriously treacherous area of collapsed ice and snow, and the base camp where most climbing expeditions prepare to make their summit at- tempts, said Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. 30 tents flattened The avalanche ploughed into a part of the base camp, a sprawling village of climbers, guides and porters, flattening at least 30 tents, Tshering said. With communication very limited at the Everest, it was not immediately clear how many of those injured and killed were at the base camp, and how many were elsewhere on the mountain. An official with Nepal’s mountaineering department, Gyanendra Shrestha, said the bodies of 10 people had been recovered and an unknown number remained missing or injured. Their nationalities were unclear as climbers de- scribed chaotic attempts to treat the injured amid fears of more landslides and after- shocks that continue to rattle the region. — AP 10 dead, more missing in Everest avalanche NEW DELHI: Furniture rattled and ceiling fans swayed when tremors struck the National Capital Region twice around noon on Saturday. The tremor and aftershock were felt at 11.45 a.m. and then at 12.18 p.m. in the NCR, as per the Indian Meteoro- logical Department. Minor cracks were found in three buildings in East Delhi, two in the South and one in the North district, as per a state- ment issued by the office of Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung. The sites were assessed and no significant damage was found. Meanwhile, there were re- ports of residents across the NCR coming out on the streets during the tremors. Rizwan Khan, a resident of Vasundhara Enclave in East Delhi, said: “The ceiling fans and furniture started shak- ing. Since, I live on the fourth floor, I felt the building sway- ing. I immediately ran down with my children both times.” Mr. Khan said he was so scared for his children’s safe- ty that he sent them away from their multi-storied building with their driver. Sanjay Kumar Vats, who works in a used car show- room in Noida, said custom- ers ran out as soon as they felt the tremors. “I thought the chair I was sitting on was about to break.
